    Fee
$6 (waived when you deposit at least $2,000 per month)

    • Thanks. I added that to the description.

    • -3

Be extremely careful with Bankwest. There in general pretty s*** at service.

A few months ago they closed my business account that I've had with them for close to 5 years.

No phone call no SMS. Apparently they sent letters to some old address, There was no message in the app, there's no email.

      • I got plenty of emails and letters warning this was going to happen. They closed all business accounts as they weren't offering the service anymore. They started sending emails and letters in Feb and I got them up until they closed my account at the end of July.

  • +38

Sigh, they are making you work hard for that 10,000 Qantas point.

  • I'm no expert on this stuff would this be right?

    10000 qantas points = $200 value roughly

3 Qantas Points per eligible purchase = 7 cents per transaction which is worthless for anything over $5

0.3 Qantas Points for every $100 in your account each day on balances up to $50,000. - Interest rate of 0.0045%?

Surely they could have given us 1 qantas point per dollar spent or something.

    • +5

      10000 qantas points = $200 value roughly

More like $150-600 if used for reward flights, $50 if redeemed on gift cards.

It used to be a half decent savings account back when interest rates were low but it's poor value now. Claim the 10,000 points and then kiss the account goodbye.

      • 200 is roughly the right. Approx 2 cent per point for business class.

Can be more or less but it depends on availability of redemption.

Qantas redemption need to be compared to business class on promotion and not full price. For international flight this has to be compared against return trips.

        • +12

It needs to be compared against the absolute cheapest flight you can get by being extremely flexible, because you have to be extremely flexible to get an international business class reward flight. In which case the value is more like 1.5c before factoring in the hundreds of dollars of your time needed to find the reward flight. As for domestic business class, comparing to cash fares is nonsense since no one would pay for one of those out of their own pocket, its all company paid or rewards, no one is paying $3k return Melbourne to Sydney for business class out of their own pocket (a prime example where someone may claim they got 7c per point but no one actually values domestic business at the cash fare price so the real value is way less).

I'm not saying there aren't some genuine high value redemptions to be made, but the average redemption wouldn't be anywhere near 2c/point. Most people can't actually get an international business reward flight because they don't have the flexibility and/or the free time required to endlessly search for one. That's how the whole thing works, bait people with the potential for high value redemptions but in reality Qantas know many will just redeem for toasters and gift cards at 0.5c/point. Otherwise they'd go broke giving away cheap business class flights rather than making record profits.

FWIW I've redeemed maybe 2 million points for business class flights the last couple of years so have a decent idea of what i'm talking about in terms of the current reality of redeeming reward flights.

          • @CheapBrah: Right now Perth to Sydney/Melbourne is sitting at 3k return. 1500 each way. In points this is return 81k plus less than 100 tax depends which city. Which is current on promotion. Which is sitting around 3 cents. This is reasonable good value and has reasonable redemption amount. There is no other product in Australia like the A330 Qantas business class right now.

            • +4

@pandadude: Would you pay $1,500 for a 3-4 hour flight in business class?

If not, you have fallen for the oldest trick in the points book — making a false comparison.

              • @vetopower: So were would you fly with 100k points?

                • @pandadude: SYD - TPE? 75000 points business class one way. If you really want to test out Emirates First Class - Syd to CHC - 64500 points.

                  • @Jetkuma: There is a large cash component on Emirates rewards, though for first class probably worth it (not worth it for economy or business rewards when factoring in the amount of cash and points).

                • @pandadude: 100k can get you pretty deep into Asia on a direct business flight one way, but direct flights are hard to come by. You'd likely have to take a flight with a stopover which usually means more points since your travelling more miles even though your not getting any further, but should be able to get into south east Asia for that much even with a stop over. Again though, need to be super flexibly with dates and do a lot of searching.

Domestic is much easier to find and Perth is a long flight so if it's worth it for you there is nothing wrong with that redemption. I got return A330 flights Melb to Perth last year but one got changed to B737 so be aware that that's a reasonably likely possibility and you have no recourse for airplane changes.

      • you can sell them for 1cpp, so $100 cash value, if you have enough. No one wants 10,000 points though.

$50 on gift cards is also a reasonable estimate of value.

The use on business class I don't think is reasonable, because business class is sooo inflated in price to value.

    • 0.3 Qantas Points for $100/day up to 50k, it means up to 150 point/day or savings at 5.5% would be $7.5?

    • I have an eftpos machine, can I run 1c purchases through and get 3c worth of points?

      • Bankwest actively monitor transactions, you will likely get your account frozen/closed if you abuse it (has happened before)

      • +1

There’s a reason more than a few people (they largely hang out on AFF) are no longer allowed to have this product.

Earning 5 points per transaction, 250 points a day for 50c spent was wonderful while it lasted. Especially when the payments could be automated using a python script.

  • +1

Will 10 x $0.05 purchase at Coles/Woolies on the same day be eligible?

    • +1

      Yeah that works.

    • What can you buy for 5c?

      • +6

Split a transaction by $0.05 and tapping your card 10 times

        • Is this doable at the self-checkout or would you need a staffed one?

          • @vawiyoci: You can split at self. The best way to use up small gift card balances without bothering a staff member

            • +1

@cooni: use everyday pay and it'll automatically use all your gift cards

              • @InfamousCalf: Yes yes but I meant other various eftpos / visa / mc ones

    • +3

No min amount so can even do 10x1c.

    • +3

You can split it as $0.01 for 10 transactions. I do it all the times for ING at Coles and Woolworth. I do it at night so there are less people. Don't want to make the person behind you gets annoyed.

      • +2

i think the person behind would think you have ocd

        • +7

Or it might be another OzBargainer awaiting to do their transactions…

      • -5

Your time must be must worth more than this right?

      • +2

My bankwest qantas account got closed by bankwest when i did a few 5c transactions last time i held it (about 4 years ago). When i complained, they made out it went against the terms and conditions. When asked what condition they then said it was not in the spirit of the card and still refused to reactivate the card!

        • Good to know. Not gonna sign up. Imagine if they did that on the 3rd month 9th transaction

    • +1

My strategy is a 10 x $1 myki top up… Yes, it's more than this suggestion but the way I see it - it's $10 that I was going to spend anyway!

    • +21

YMMV but this did not work for me. They refused to grant me the points from the last deal (only 5,000 points). I made a few calls and waited a long time to escalate this, but they just kept insisting that I tried to 'game' the system by making these small transactions.. Tbh, they were quite rude and incompetent. They put me on hold for a long time and still were not able to track down these 'deemed ineligible' transactions of mine. I had to look at the history in the Bankwest app to tell them. Then they asked, "what could you possibly buy at WW for a few cents?" I replied by saying that your terms and conditions did not specify the minimum amount, but they kept claiming that this was fraudulent. A guy called back after, explaining the team had reviewed this and decided that I gamed it and would not get the points, he even implied that I was so petty to chase down this small amount of points. After ~2 months, I raised a complaint with BankWest, but got the same results. And the same incompetence issue happened when they reviewed my complaint, they could not see my history with these transactions in some months around July and September (still have their replying emails). I wanted to raise this to ACFA, but I’ve not got the time yet. FYI, I started this 5,000 point deal around April - May last year and all of these headache happened in December and the beginning of this year. I guess I’ll let this pass as 5000 is not worth the time but i would say WIDE BERTH

      • Hmm. Take notice ^ everyone!

      • -1

So basically, game the system and you might get caught out. Don't game the system and you'll be fine. Got it.

        • Wonder if it's more feasible if you just buy 10x $1 chocolate bars instead of trying to min/max it down to 1c split transactions lol.
Also if they've already had this deal for years why not just add in more t&c conditions around the 10 transactions eg can't all be done within a single day or min amounts for each transactions. Or do they stupidly think that they'll invite more abuse by adding in more detailed instructions?

      • -4

Good lord. You tried to game the system. You got called out on it…… and you spent time complaining?

How awkward for you to be rightfully told that you’re petty. 💀

        • +6

If this were anywhere but ozbargain your point would probably be a fair one, but here we don't stop until the last drop has been extracted

        • +1

To be fair, if they had specified the minimum amount of each transaction (like Revolut's referral deal with each transaction > $10), I could have easily and happily met it. But they did not specify anything. The BankWest staff even admitted it during the phone call, but still the conclusion was that I gamed it. LOL

          • +2

@akafinal: I’m certain that if you bring this to ACFA, BW will be in trouble for misleading.

          • @akafinal: But you did game it. Why else would you have split your Woolworths transactions into a few cents each.

            • @capslock: Where in the Ts and Cs is gaming referred to?

              • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Bankwest Qantas Rewards Program Ts & Cs clause 7.

You will not accrue … Bonus Qantas Points … if … we reasonably decide that you are behaving fraudulently.

                • +2

@capslock: Paying for 1c transactions is not fraudulent behaviour

        • +5

It doesn’t appear to define a minimum spend per transaction, nor what constitutes a valid transaction. He should be awarded the points if he met the criteria.

        • Out of touch comment and looks a bit silly to be honest. The whole point of these promos is to get people to swap to the bank and making the account their main transactional account.

The commentor clearly didn't want to do that but was happy to try out Bankwest in order to claim their right to the deal as long as they followed the T&Cs. That's just the cost of running these promos, some people will stay and some people won't.

      • +4

        Seems Backwest is dodge AF.

      • I think the best learning from here is that I should keep a receipt after I purchase small amount. (yeah one small onion or banana)

I should also buy it in different days and different items (from chocolate to other stuff)

      • Please bring it to ACC body, that's pretty disgusting that they can just deny you even though you did everything within the T&Cs

    • +1

I think you guys are missing the point. I'm pretty sure everyone makes 10 transactions / purchases in a month anway. Just use it to pay for you coffee in the morning and walah, you've got 10,000 points for something you'd already buy anyway.

      • +1

Yeah I really don't understand this. Surely you have 10 transactions a month?! Why bother gaming this other than some sort of weird min/max fetish.

      • +3

Lol Walah! It's "Voila". Not a viola the musical instrument, the French expression.

        • -1

No one likes the French mate, I wouldn't stick up for them. It's walah down under… kapish?

      • +1

I use HSBC card to pay for coffee to get 2% back

      • Incorrect, I used it for afterpay transactions and other small ones like coffees and they rejected points and said I was behaving "fraudulently" and would not receive any points (even though they gave me the regular monthly points, just not the bonus).

  • +1

Had this couple of years ago without requirement of making trx but hey free points. Closed acct because too much hassle for the 2k but tbh this shall be fine now as i hold their platinum zero credit card

    • -1

So if you got one of their credit cards, you don't need to do the monthly $2k deposit? Is this one the T&C?

      • Nope, you still need to, its two separate account independently

  • +1

I’m confused…. I’m a bank west customer. Do I just open one of these accounts or am I ineligible?

    • +3

Customers must be a new Bankwest Transaction Account holder who has not held a Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account in the last 24 months.

Customers who have closed a Transaction Account (not including a Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account) more than 30 days prior, will be considered a new Transaction Account holder

    • If you’ve not had this type of account just open one online.

  • Does opening this account require a credit check?

    • +3

No, this is not a credit card nor credit account

  • +7

As a former business account holder with Bankwest I just want to say, F*** BankWest.

I suppose hidden silver lining of being forced to make a new business account (chose CBA) showed me how banks can actually have a good functional user friendly app :’)

    • whats a good business bank account?

      • +1

Ideally one that doesn’t randomly decide to close the business side of itself down. At least should have given us an auto handover to parent company CBA. Still getting some of my infrequent account customers paying their accounts to my now deactivated account. Annoying AF.

      • I am with AMP, they pay 0.60% interest of balance, or 5% if balance is over $10k.

      • +1

        NAB.

        No fees for most things.

        • NAB is great. No fees and they will generally refund out of good will. Great app as well

        • We had various problems with NAB business account. Got really frustrated and wasted a lot of my time.

    • +1

As a former business account holder with Bankwest I just want to say, F*** BankWest.

You know that Bankwest is CBA, right?

      • +1

Yes I am aware, can’t see cba shutting up shop though

  • on the post it says tomorrow but the website shows the offer. Is the offer active now r

    • I wouldn’t risk it, just wait a few more hours

between 1 September 2023 and 30 November 2023 (‘promotional period’)

      • +1

        thanks

      • Damm it I saw it on the site and just opened one yesterday

  • +1

Does anyone know if I can transfer between two bank accounts via beem and will that count as a transaction?

    • Would like to know this too

      • We each have a BW account and transfer $100 between them daily to remove the account fee, and keep our Qantas accounts active with a trickle of points each month. Our quarterly statements are hilarious.
Edit: sorry didn't see Beem reference. Our transactions are normal BW scheduled transfers.

        • Does that count as a transaction?

    • YMMV but I wouldn't count on beemit transfers as eligible transactions for the purposes of this promo

  • Does it come with the a card that gives you complimentary travel insurance?

  • Can you just transfer 2k to the account, and transfer it out a day later?

Doesn't seem like a lot of effort for 10k bonus pts.

I didn't know you could do the split payments at Coles or Woolworths, makes it easy I spose!

    • +1

Can you just transfer 2k to the account, and transfer it out a day later?

      That works, yes.

      • That works only to get rid of the monthly fee for the current month, right? I assume it doesn't count towards the 10 required transactions?

        • Yes, that's just for the monthly fee waiver. The ten transactions have to be actual purchases.

  • +1

Was going to give this a miss but… $100 for less than 30 min of my time…
    Sucked in again.

  • Cheers. Need this to complete my qantas challenge so they can reinstate my 360k points

    • +1

You might want to consider what I'm doing to maintain regular Qantas points activity.

  • What counts as an eligible purchase? Most purchases are eligible purchases except some things such as bank fees, gambling, government charges and anything else listed in Section 1 of our Bankwest Qantas Rewards Terms and Conditions (PDF).

    No BPAY

Lets boycott this one, 10 transactions is way too much.

    • 10x 10c transactions at supermarket
      Easy

      • afterpay x 4 - gift cards.

But nah 10 transactions at a supermarket is easy, but it the machines are so slow.

    • Its actually 10 x 3 months. So 30 transactions.

  • 10 purchases per month can be achieved by 1 purchase in coles / woolies with splitting 10 payments right?

    • +6

      Yes.
Another easy way is to purchase 10 x $1 Amazon gift cards, which is a no brainer if you already use Amazon.

      • And you can load them onto your Amazon account, easy!
