Thanks OP, was looking to get one but the AU price of $249 was putting me off.

    • +2

The overall of Eufy price point is hideous. Since covid the prices have exceeded and not declined whilst their are other better options out there.

For example Floodlight 2. Before covid was around $449 on special as low as $379, JB hifi for example.

      Now $549 on special- $459.

I have this device, and believe their are now better options, it's not 100% perfect, does the job

I believe they are slowly pricing themselves out of the market space for the home consumer.

I have -few cameras left but will be looking at better options down the track, so as for putting you off, totally agree.

      • +1

Would you care to share the better options?

        • +1

replied via DM, have posted it but due to being off topic will only post once.

  • Do silly question, but do they work in Australia?

    • +138

      Same sun so should work

      • +25

        upside down sun

        • +15

          110V sun vs 240V

        • We prefer a northern aspect here but up north they prefer a southern aspect for maximum sunlight

It's a genuine question, recently, I have bought some IT Techs over seas, it works perfectly in the country it was bought, but it will never connect to internet in Australia.

List: Ezviz security cameras, Levono Projector, Pospal POS System.

        • Sounds like some products have issues while connecting to 2.4 or 5.0hz

          • +1

            @0PriceJack0: Region restricted.

            • +1

@Vater Woods: Hi. Can you clarify that? Why is it
              Restricted ?
I bought my mum in Ireland 2 solar outdoor eufy cameras on UK Amazon.
Brother set up on wifi for her and can “share” camera with family.

When I got invite to share yes, there was an issue as she was EU region and as existing eufy account was AU I did have to change region to EU to accept sharers cameras.
It meant have to add my cameras again - but that wasn’t an issue. Just took the time to pair each one again with my homebase. (Edit - meaning having to set up homebase and cameras as new devices)

So now I have all cameras showing. Mums 2 and my 4. Region says IRELAND .

EUFY customer support gave me the solution.

Just seeking clarification about restricted in case it’s something different?
I’d like one of these !

              • +1

@Msfrugal: In my case, it connects to wifi no problem.

But when I tried to go on internet, it just displays region restricted. I contacted hardware manufacturer, they said I could try bring the hardware back to the country, set everything up, then try use it in Australia.

After numerous different hacks, I gave up, and gave them to friends in their original country.

                • @Vater Woods: Hi. Thanks for reply

Here’s what it tells me Re REGION .

I’d to logout of EUFY app and when logged back in select the region you want.

“ To change your region, please log out and choose your region on the login page.
Please make sure to select your actual region. You cannot access the devices if you choose a new region which is different from the previous one.“

I had deleted all my cameras and homebase before I logged out and just added all again after accepting mums share invite.

Do you still have the APP ?
Perhaps you might try that ?
You can confirm for others that you can change to USA which will then allow the USA EUFY camera to be used.

                  Go Profile (top left)
                  Settings
                  Region is in the list.

I not sure if I used VPN ? But eufy CS didn’t say to do that afaik

Appreciate help and thanks for replying.
                  Hope it makes sense.

                  • +1

@Msfrugal: Rofl they don't need your help connecting a eufy product. You've completely misunderstood @Vater Woods. They don't need help with a eufy camera. They don't own one.

Given that English doesn't seem to be their first language, I still grasped that when they said "it's a genuine question", they weren't the one asking, just defending the question. At no point did they infer they owned an eufy products, in fact, they told us what they couldn't get to work here "List: Ezviz security cameras, Levono Projector, Pospal POS System."

If just got funnier and funnier when you asked them to clarify and why "it" was restricted.

So in their mind, they think you know "it" refers to Ezviz security cameras, Levono Projector or a Pospal POS System and so they offer you a reply.

You then thank them for their irrelevant reply and then offer up your own irrelevant reply😂😂

It was playing out like one of those comedy sketches where two people are having conversation about two separate things!

      • +1

Not the same, our Sun here is stronger and more vibrant and higher UV. Not sure if this thing can last under Aussie Sun. So its a genuine question

We are closer due to equator and how the Earth orbits facing the sun in the Southern hemisphere. We are also closer to Ozone Layer hole

        • Will it work here and will it last here are two separate questions. You've gone off on a tangent. It has to work here before it can last here (insert some kind of immigration joke)

no, it has in built storage, also doesn't require the homebase.

However, having owned a eufy floodlight cam, videos just straight up go missing from time to time which is really annoying (have noticed this as I have another camera in a similar area), where the homebase camera records and the floodlight should also, but doesn't.. Real flaky and hard to recommend.

Does it need direct sunlight or sunlight in general? Would like to mount on above the front door but there's absolutely no direct sunlight there

    • Is your front door in Coober Pedy?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14260271/redir

    • +3

I strongly recommend NOT putting it in direct sunlight (it will cook the batteries and they will be dead in no time).

I put them under an eave at the exact point where they are in shade in summer (so only gets reflected / scattered light), but gets full sun in the winter (as the winter sun is at a lower angle). This also gives some rain protection.

A bit late now, but at the next winter solstice mark the sun line of the eave at midday. This is your install point. Might be able to see indicators now (ie moss line, ie. it wont grow in full sun. So mount it right at the point where the moss first stops.

      • +1

I guess we should charge it manually every now and then ?

      • +4

I strongly recommend NOT putting it in direct sunlight

Your recommendation conflicts with Eufy's own advice about this camera:

"Install your camera in a position that exposes it to as much sun as possible"
        Operating Environment: -20°C - 50°C
Product Lifespan: 60,000 Hours (Over 6 Years)

        source: https://eu.eufy.com/products/t81a0311

        • +3

Of course…Eufy would love you to buy a new one every 2 years!

Check the temp of your batteries in full sun over summer with an IR temp gun. They will be a minimum of 60C (which is also outside the operating guidelines).

So really, if yours fails, you could ask for a full refund/ replacement as they "aren't fit for purpose" (the solar panel and battery should NEVER both be in full sun).

Alternatively, mount them in indirect sun (might be able to keep them under 50C …never know based on the coming summer)

          • @tunzafun001: But the internal battery is never in direct sunlight, and the internal ambient temperature would not reach 60C.

The difference with say a vehicle left in hot sun, is all the metal and heat absorbing material causes the vehicle to act like an oven. But this camera won't act like an oven, it's plastic. The heat will dissipate before it ever reaches 60 degrees inside the housing.

            • +1

@cerealJay: Measure it. You will be suprised

I have a white cased unit, placed it in full sun this afternoon for a couple of hours and the battery was 58C (and its only September). This being a black unit in summer…well..

Lithium doesnt like to get above 27C. Most of summer will be above this …in the shade. Putting a lithium battery in a black plastic box (without a cooling mechanism) is just a bad idea.

You can get models with a solar panel seperate. Much better idea for Australia.

If you have to get an integrated unit (like those rubbish security lights that everyone loved, then hated) put em in a spot that only gets full sun in winter. Mine are still going strong after 2 years.

              • @tunzafun001:

I have a white cased unit

No idea what you're referring to, but the Eufy device is sealed, the battery inside is likely insulated since the whole thing is weather proof. If you open it up, I'm guessing the battery won't be just sitting there. I could be wrong… who wants to buy one and find out?

If your white box contains an uninsulated battery that is pressed up against the outer housing, then yes it will get hot.

The Eufy device is low powered, the battery and electronics are not generating much heat on their own. Maybe your white box is generating its own heat.. you should measure the battery temps when no sun has fallen on the device. Only then will you know how much the sun increases the base temp of battery.

Lithium doesnt like to get above 27C

"Lithium" is not a person with weather preferences! Not all batteries are alike. Lithium batteries are known for their improved temperature tolerances in many applications, including industrial machines rated for extreme temperatures. The incidents with battery fires in cheap devices like scooters, is more about the garbage quality control of circuits, chargers and components associated with the battery rather than the battery chemistry itself. And in phones, the processor is doing so much work in a confined space, the small batteries heat up quickly and can reduce lifespan, combined with being left at 100% charge for too long.

Again, the stated operating environment of the Eufy is up to 50 degrees C. This refers to ambient temperature outside, not the surface temperature of battery or other components.

Putting a lithium battery in a black plastic box (without a cooling mechanism) is just a bad idea.

According to who? When the box is small and plastic, heat won't stick around. It's a small plastic lid, not a 10kg solar panel on a tin roof. I do agree that a solar panel connected with cable is better, but not for the reasons you've mentioned but for practical placement.

                • @cerealJay: Ok you're right.

                  Heading towards an Ozbargain spiral…

                  I'm out..you do you.

                  • @tunzafun001:

                    I'm out..you do you.

Funny how this all started with you strongly recommending we do as you do. :-)

All batteries decline over time. The likely scenario in this case is the battery will reduce capacity somewhat but otherwise not impact the normal operation over 6 years when solar is continuously trickle charging. I'm out too!

      • In Winter is midday AEST the topmost position of the sun? If so, does that mean 1PM becomes the highest position after daylight savings kicks in?

        • Highest point of the day is mid day regardless of the time of year.

In summer the sun is basically directly over head.. So eaves will throw the most shade.

In winter the sun is lower in the sky and closer to the horizon. So the sun will shine under the eaves.

          • @tunzafun001:

Highest point of the day is mid day regardless of the time of year.

In the context of eckorock's question (whether the highest point of the sun is midday AEST/1pm daylight savings time), not necessarily. Timezones spread out over a range of longitudes. Generally, along some longitudinal line within a certain timezone 'block', the highest point will be midday. This line is likely to shift during the year, and not just due to daylight savings.

To get the exact time for your exact location, search for "solar noon".

For example, for Sydney, today (8/9) solar noon is 11:53am: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/australia/sydney
A little bit to the southwest in Albury, solar noon is a little over a quarter of an hour later at 12:10pm: https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/australia/albury

After daylight savings kicks in in October, solar noon is roughly 12:45pm for Sydney.

            • @pangwen: Ok, yes. I didn't read the question that way (as no time zone was mentioned). Some people think the sun moves, curtains damaged in daylight savings :)
So was just pointing out the highest point will always be in the middle between sun up and sun down.

Obviously time zones aren't fluid. So yes, solar noon will vary depending on where you live.
For positioning a solar device at the winter solstice, 1130 to 130 range will be fine.

I don't trust the battery can last > 12 mths outdoors. I have never used a solar light that can last that long.

    • +3

      I have

    • +2

It works if it gets sunlight. I have solar cam for more than a year now and battery has never gone below 90

    • i have too. i bought 2x sets of solar fastoon lights from costco about 3yrs ago, they work purely off solar and every bulb still lights up at night, rain or shine, shorter duration if it was cloudy/rainy day. One bulb is now a little wonky but ive been pretty impressed at them as I honestly didn’t expect to last over 1 year, let alone 2.

    • +1

I'd normally be sceptical too. However, this does have a 5,200mAh lithium-ion battery…

      • +1

you probably won't get much out of this in real world use because under the Sun the battery will deteriorate so quick, possible a hazard due to heat.

    • +2

so odd you think that it's the first thing they would consider when adding ANY product to their lineup.

      • +1

That's assuming that this product was actually developed in house. What probably happened was that a generic manufacturer created a new product (either the whole thing, or the control board) and Eufy just bought them and put their own software on them. Now they have to figure out how to hook it into their existing products.

  • The compability mentions alexa and google home, in order to have some control over the lights? Does anyone know if something like this is supported by HASS, and can control the lights like a regular outdoor light (on off switch?)

    Here is the review: https://youtu.be/Pngs3_LK3jE?si=Oe3ZpiqeLCh2QRTD

This is not for everyone, you need to ask yourself if you're okay with 12 seconds delay for this camera to detect and record an activity.

For me this is bad. YMMV with this.

    • Good point. When I hear something out front I'd like to get a notification immediately. Any suggestions on a similar product that does this?

    • +2

Been using EUFY's products for almost 2yrs now, notifications are almost instantaneous for me, dont know about this 12 second delay……my wifi is pretty hektik though, so YMMV.

      • +1

I find there's a decent delay between the doorbell getting pressed and getting the notification on my phone. Often the postie will drop something and my door, press the button and start walking off. I'll get the notification and open the app just in time to see the van drive off.

        • for me the notifications are almost instantly. It does take a while to open app / video streaming

      • +1

Are you using wired or battery power eufy products?

Based on my research, most of battery powered devices has worse detection time compared to wired. This is because for battery, they use PIR sensor to detect and wake up the device and then start recording.

        • I'm using a battery one as there's no power nearby. Agree about the compromises that are made.

        • +1

My three floodlights are wired to power and my other two cams are plugged into power with surge protectors.

The most I've ever noticed was maybe a 1-2 second delay from when the floodlight turns on to when the text goes out - but that was on the 1080p model, I've since switch it out for a 2K model.

My internet is 1000/50 with AussieBB - 3 routers in mesh mode with ethernet backhaul, so all wireless devices are getting about 750-860mbps in signal.

The Eufy devices though, run on my 2.4ghz network (I don't believe they work on 5ghz - well at least didnt at the time of setup).

          • @TB0n3: I'm using the wired floodlight too and it takes about 2-3 seconds to get a notification for a car passing on the road but a postie dropping a mail in the mailbox never gets detected and a car going in my driveway takes about 10 seconds.

            • @noone: Seemed to work out it's better to ensure it's not run via wireless extrender just straight to the Wireless Router.

I've vastly improved bandwidth and notifications.

            • +1

@noone: Might have to play around with the settings, or perhaps angle your cam to where the most action will likely be.

My backyard cam is on a weird angle, to capture the action coming from the backdoor and side lane area. When we positioned it straight on, it wouldnt detect anything till you were really up close (defeats the purpose, by then someones broken in or vanished from the scene).

No qualms on my front door one, picks up every dodgy courier who likes to throw my packages - always fun talking to them the next time round lol

I turned off vehicle detection because at the time of install it wasnt working - but would detect humans in the front seat as they waited for the garage door to go up (go figure).

One thing I hate is spiders - phuckers all want to weave the web on the camera, creating all sorts of notifications in the early hours of the night. So many false positives, it hurts.

          • +1

@TB0n3: "The Eufy devices though, run on my 2.4ghz network (I don't believe they work on 5ghz - well at least didnt at the time of setup)."

            Yes whilst Reolink do both.

      • Weird, I get a delay constantly on notifications, even 1hr later. Can you explain your setup if you don't mind.

    • +4

      12 seconds delay

To be fair, the reviewer isn't testing delay time. He just noticed it took that long with the settings he applied.

You may notice he is including a thumbnail in the notification, which will increase delay. He is also using one of the default detection modes. Go to 10:29 in the video and you can see there's a mode called "customize recording" where you can shorten detection times at the cost of battery life. That's the mode you want if 12 seconds is too long.

    • +2

if you're okay with 12 seconds delay

Having installed this from this deal and adjusted the settings in the app the delay is more like 1 second to start recording. Battery life at this sensitivity is great. And this is for the movement at about 6m away. It's a brilliant piece of kit!

      • Thanks for reporting this back!

  • Thanks OP, bought two!

  • Does anyone know whether this can be used without a cloud service? e.g. access on-board storage from network

Integrate this specific model in Home Assistant?
