Google Nest Battery Camera $124 (Sold Out Online, C&C/ in-Store Only) @ Officeworks

1790

Was in the market for a new nest camera and came across this deal at officeworks. I assume it’s incorrectly priced but I’ve ordered for delivery with no cancellation so far.

They also have the doorbell camera for the same price. https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/google-nes…

do you HAVE to have a subscription to Aware to use this?

    • +2

Not sure about the camera, but I have the doorbell and no subscription needed. Records video for only 3 hours, but you can download the recording as long as you view it within the 3 hour period.

      • I always see conflicting information from users if it's 3hrs of recorded footage or the past 3hrs. Which one is it ?

        • With 24/7 live view and up to 3 hours of event video history

        • +3

It's the past 3 hours unless you pay for subscription

          • +1

@BargainMe: My understanding is that 3hrs of event video history, is 3hrs worth of events. So if the camera recorded 30mins of events every day, it would go back 6 days

            • +9

@caviar: Cam owner here, it's only the events recorded in the last 3 hours. So if there were 30 minutes of events recorded within the last 3 hours they'd all show in your app but anything older than 3 hours ago disappears

            • +9

@caviar: No it's just the past 3 hours so honestly it's pretty useless as if something happens at night the footage will already be gone by morning

            • +1

              @caviar: this statement is incorrect

        • +5

Pretty sure its the past 3 hours. Like i've had a package get delivered at about 3am on a Saturday, and by the time i've woken up at 8am, I have a notification of a package, but cannot see the footage.

        • Can we download the recorded videos directly to phone?

        • +14

I'm only just now moving to Eufy for my two cameras with local storage and no subscriptions. Moving away from Nest because they are jacking my gen 1 aware cost from $110 to $190 a year. That got me everything with 5 day 24/7 history which was perfect for me.

I cancelled my subscription first to see how bad the free tier would be, and for me it's useless. It is a three hour history. Anything longer than three hours ago is gone forever. But what's worse for older camera's (mine are ancient, purchased in 2017 & 2019 /s), is that three hour event history is not video. It's a randomly selected frame from that event. So it'll tell you that there was movement for x minutes and x seconds, but you'll only get one picture of it.

For the newer cameras like this one, you'll get actually event video history for the last three hours. But that still won't help if something happens overnight and you want to go back and see what happened. Good news for people who have purchased this over Eufy is that nest app/software is superior. App is nicer and more intuitive. I always used the feature where you could scroll though the history and it would play like a time lapse (paid sub required). Making it easy to see exactly when a car came or went, or when a package was left. Activity zones are much better on Nest (paid sub required). You can add multiple ones and define different alert rules for each. So you might select you door and only be notified if it sees a person. But for your driveway you want all motion. Eufy has none of that and the activity zone is pretty useless as it still appears to detect motion from outside of it. People on forums will say a new firmware update has fixed it for them, only for the next one to break it, or to purchase the $350 hub to make it "smarter". I've just set it to people only so I don't get a tone of useless notifications.

So if you're happy paying the minimum $120 a year for Nest, I'd say it's better than Eufy. But that $120 still doesn't get you 24/7 recording, you'll need to pay $240 for that! So you're hoping it'll actually detect whatever you need it to for it to record. There's no changes you can make to the motion sensitivity either. So it's up to Google/Nest if your events are actually captured or not.

    • Good to get subscription, if something happend at midnight and you fall asleep till 7am :)

    • -3

No subscription means only 5 hr footage record

    • +6

You don't have to have it, but not having one provides you with the last 3 hours of playback only.
You can still download items from that 3 hour period, however at 3 hours and 1 second the footage is gone.

If you had a break in over night and only notice in the morning, there will be no footage unless it occurred in the last 3 hours, also subscribing won't give you access to the older footage, it will only begin from the time you subscribe.

WITH the subscription, you get 10 days continuous playback (You can rewind to any point in the last 10 days) and an additional 60 days of event based recording (Something that triggered one of your pre-defined or manually defined events, eg. Movement in a zone, a person, animal etc.).

I have 2 cams and the doorbell, and honestly I wish I just bought a decent NVR and camera setup, google have locked these down so capturing the stream is near impossible (Not impossible, but may as well be).

      Free vs Sub comparrison: https://store.google.com/au/product/nest_aware?hl=en-GB&pli=…

      • What would be decent nvr and camera, setupso conflicted over these and others like it.

    • No! Extra added benefits if you sign up for the paid subscription.

Thanks OP. Ordered 2 for pickup

  • Thank OP. Just ordered 2x click and collect from Hobart store. Hopefully all good! Cracker price!!

  • Note, many users report ~2 months of battery life before needing to charge.

    • Not to mention only 3 hours of video clips :(

    • I think its all depend on the traffic. If you got a high traffic area, better get the wired one.

  • +6

The doorbell has also been marked down to $124

    • +2

Had to show phone browser in-store, as price on registers is $269 (I think). No problem getting it at $124.

  • This or eufy?

    • +1

At this price, buy first and think later!

    • Eufy

  • Ordered the doorbell and 2 cameras, thanks.

  • Looks like a price error to me as they have applied both the same price for the indoor camera and the outdoor camera. JB Hi-Fi has the outdoor one on 'sale' at $246 and the indoor one at $126. Get it while you can!

  • Got one for c&c

Noob question, whats stopping somone from just pulling the thing off

    • +3

Its the same for any other camera really

      • Oh wow, that's nice!

      • But apparently you need to provide the police report which costs $$$ - amazon review

        • +3

Since when does a police report does cost money? Review is most likely from OS.

          • +1

@mcsere: Reviewer is from Adelaide and this a snippet of their comment:

Google says they have a free replacement for stolen doorbells. I gave them the video of it being stolen and the police report number and it wasn't enough. They then asked for a proper copy of the police report. Which takes 6-8 weeks and costs $80-$100. I just had my doorbell stolen and you want me to spend another $100. Insurance companies use the report numbers to lookup the information they need.

            • @Clivey In Space: Of couse you need a police report, else our 10+ camers will suddently get stolen. LOL
It just unfronate that our cop shop charges $100 for a report. I think same apply to RING.

              • +3

@boomramada: I agree I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a police report - there needs to be checks and balances and this is a world wide policy wherever the doorbells are sold after all. The real crime here is the police charging $80 - $100 for a report. Imagine that, as a victim of crime you need to further pay a ridiculous fee to the police for the pleasure of trying to claim on stolen items.

Edit: Good news if you're in WA, lost property reports can be obtained for free via Check My Crime

      • +1

Still don't get why Google can't lock it down to your google account. You should be able to add a uniqueID number to your account. If it gets stolen you could then disable the device and o one else could then use it.

    • Position it out of easy reach

      • ..which means you'll have to grab a ladder every time you need to recharge.

        • +1

Or get some of these bad boys… Kangaroo Shoes

        • Yes, much better to have it stolen

    • It's anchored to the wall and you need a tool to get behind it to push the release button. But as long as it's done within 3hrs of noticing it's missing (you should get an alert on your phone)…..you'll be able to save the footage of the culprit ;)

  • Does this come with a security wire? How do I prevent this from disappearing within a day?

    • It comes with a screw in wire that I believe is more for fall protection. There are third party security wires that can be purchased separately.

    • Doesnt come with any wires. You'll need to buy third party sets.

It only has the screw mounting hole.

    • How do I prevent this from disappearing within a day?

The only difference between this and any other camera is it doesn't have a power cable attached, which isn't a deterrant either.

  • Is this a price error or are all Google products being cleared out now?

nest aware subscription is being fazed out next year ..door bell seems like best option as it records on device

    • So what does that mean? Can we keep more than 3 hra kn device without subscription?

    • Does it?

    • +4

Where did you hear this? It's only for Nest Secure not Nest Aware

    • +1

      This is not true.

      • Nest aware just got a price increase to A$240. It has not been discontinued.
      • The Nest Secure security system launched in 2017 and discontinued in 2020 will cease support next year. This is likely what you are referring to.
      • You can’t pull video off the doorbells or cameras; even if they have a small amount of internal storage: it is designed as a buffer in case your internet goes out.
  • Thank you. Got 2. Hopefully it doesn’t require an subscription

    • I have one of these and I personally think it's a waste of money without the subscription because it only records events of past 3 hours and most of the time I haven't been able to get the event I need because I don't check the phone that frequently during the day. I am big time Google fan but disappointed to use this particular product as NestAware subscription is expensive and is required for the camera for effective use. I wish I had spent money on some other SDcard based or NVR based system.

      • +2

at $120/year for 30 days of event clips its worth it. $10/month..$2.50/week..its very little for decent security. I have it and the 30 day subscription. Have set up the detection zones,3minute video clips which has been more than enough, notifications, face detection and it works very well. Am very happy with it.

    • Basically does for proper features. It can be worth it though for user friendliness and not needing a HDD recording system and don't need electrician to install.
Not the cheapest way to get long term security system though.

      • How much is the subscription

        • $120 a year for 30 days of recordings, unlimited devices (just went up from $90 unfortunately). Or $240 if you want 24/7 recording.

  • Thanks trying doorbell

  • Just picked up 1 battery cam.

Great deal, noticed that in-store the Google nest stuff isnt marked down, so it still has the 325$ pricetag on the battery cam. Better do click&collect

  • +1

This or those xiaomi outdoor camera?

    • Are you talking about IMILAB EC2 Outdoor Wireless Security Camera? I have 6 of those (yes, it's a lot, got it cheap and I have a dog) Steer clear from it! Main issues I have:
      1. Mount is super fragile, just installing them breaks it. Which leaves your camera 'dangling' and you can't aim it properly.
      2. Software doesn't have any intelligence. If you turn on recording - it WILL record anything. Imagine recording leaves moving the whole day
      3. Above leads to decreased battery life. Since there's no intelligent recording and it records leaves, battery runs empty in a day.
      4. Home monitoring kills battery as well.
      5. The run 2.4ghz, when you set it up with newer phones, it won't detect 2.4ghz which leads to camera not being setup. I keep an old phone handy just to setup the damned thing.

The only positive is it has microSD card recording - that's it.

      • Thank you for sharing

  • Thanks OP! Been waiting to get these, as I already have the doorbell. And can confirm that it will only store videos for 3hrs. The features on these outweigh recording, and if recording is important, you can always subscribe to nest aware.

  • Sold out in tarren point ow

  • Thanks OP - Order has gone through. Was initially showing as out of stock when selecting Delivery to Door, completed purchase through Click and Collect.
Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled!

    • +1

You were still able to order the nest camera? Shows as out of stock for me.

Actually no, it's showing up as available now!

  • Cheers, ordered one. Already 'ready for collection' in store.

  • Mines ready for collection.

The magic of ozbargain. I saw this post maybe 1 hour ago, now I am holding 2 cameras in my hand

  • +4

Just picked up the doorbell and 4 cameras.
Staff are aware of the price change and believe it's correct

    • Maybe new incoming products from Google…

  • My mum has a trio of these. Absolute nightmare to set up for some reason. The way they're marketed should be pretty much a plug and play but seriously, took me hours to get it first set up on her network. And then she went and cancelled her internet provider and joined another one and no matter what I did, I couldn't get them to connect to her new network (after hours of troubleshooting, forums, factory resets, router settings).

Maybe it was just bad luck or maybe they got a faulty batch but the entire experience has put me off these for life.

    • +1

I've got a doorbell, 1 wired and 1 battery. No issues.

    • Was plug and play for me

    • I had the opposite experience, setting them up in Google Home was very easy.

      • I think it might be because her partner set them up first and did something to set them out of whack. I have no idea but it was a REALLY annoying process.

    • These are as simple to setup as they get. This is me coming from xiaomi and other cheaper branded cameras. Might be a router issue and make sure you set the cameras up inside first before bringing them out.

      • I'm pretty tech savvy, and I don't know if its because he played around with it at first, but even when I brought it home to my own router, factory reset it etc etc couldn't get it to work. Baffling.

  • +2

Cracking deal, I had google store credit left over from buying the Pixel 7. Managed to get the google support chat to price-match the camera and doorbell.

    • +1

When they price matched, did they give the lower price or just asked to place order at full price and then they will refund ?

      • +1

Yeah the latter. I got them to confirm in chat that once the order shipped for the two items I could reply to their email and get a $410 refund.

  • +1

Wow this is a great price. Too bad we already grabbed a bunch last year and set them up…don't think we need anymore cams.
    Or do we…

    • No we don't

  • +2

Thanks op, bought 4 (some for my dad and some for me) via C&C and they're ready for collection already.

  • +1

    Cancellation and refund.
