For those who wants to use the gift cards for Apple products and dont mind Vodafone, offers at Apple is better. $1,000 credit for $69 dollars plan.

    • +4

      I only see a $75 plan?

Which only works out at a $176 saving over 24 months and being stuck on Vodafone instead of full Telstra network.

      • +7

When you click in on view plan detail, you should see the options

        • +1

          ah, thanks!

Now to figure out if being on Telstra is worth $320 over 2 years to me instead.

          • +5

            @freefall101: It certainly is.

          • +2

@freefall101: If you like to travel a fair bit out of major cities, then 100% worth it.

          • @freefall101: How'd you get it down to $320?

            • +2

              @shreav: $320 more than Vodafone

              $69x24-$1000 = $656 Vodafone
              $99x24-$1400 = $976 Telstra

              • @freefall101: Can we still call the telstra chat and get a discount of 10 or 20$ per month?

                • +4

@Spidy2021: I dont think so. ever since jb have moved to their 'upfront' plans, i think it has become very hard to. YMMV.

          • @freefall101: Not sure where you live but for me, travelling through Melbourne CBD via train, there are a lot of black spots while I'm on the train from Southern Cross to Brunswick (on Vodafone). Strangely, the Vodafone coverage map doesn't show that area as being no service.
At the end of this contract, I will probably be switching to Telstra for this reason.

        • +3

If you live in Sydney, and on the T4 line, then definitely not :-) In my home, Telstra 5G gives 50Mbps, while Vodafone gives 200+, either 4G or 5G.
And in the T4 tunnel, Telstra will take you to 3G, which behaves like 2G (no internet, intermittent voice)

          • +1

@Averell: I've raised this with TFNSW and encourage you to do the same about the T4 line issue (and raise with Telstra).

      • +1

Surprisingly Telstra can be crap too depending on where you live and operate. In my building Optus reception is great, while Telstra has almost 0 reception in my apartment.

        • +1

          100%

I've noticed my Telstra SIM often gets poorer reception around the CBD than my Optus SIM (I carry two phones).

        • Telstra reception inside many large buildings has been terrible for me. Go outside and full bars 5G

        • I work all around Sydney and have the work phone is from Telstra whilst my private one is Optus. It's much of a muchness really. Rural Australia, yeah… Telstra is better. In Sydney, they're ALL pretty bad compared to any 1st world country.

          • @educalifa: Optus in Melbourne CBD works flawlessly… when it works (bloody today's Optus outage!)

            • @alenpln: Sydney CBD they all work as well, unless you're in a building and then tough luck sometimes. But you have some areas like Wentworth Point, for example, where it doesn't matter what provider you have chances are signal will be sh#T or non existent for a lot of it. Quite incredible that we still have that in Australia's largest city and it's not even a remote part of it either.

    • +4

Vodafone has international calls. No international call with jb hifi Telstra plans is sometimes a dealbreaker

      • -1

        I'll take the dealbreaker anytime.
A Voda store rep oncetold me they don't have a policy to honour ACCC.

        • +2

That kinda makes sense. The ACCC is a government departmen, so why would they honour them.

However they should honour Australian Consumer Law, which is developed by the ACCC..

        • +1

they dont get a choice in honouring the ACCC or not the Consumer law applies to everything

    • My daughter just did this. Went to Apple, signed up with Voda for 24 months @ $69/month, got the $1000 credit. Picked up an iPhone 15 Pro Max for $2199, but also got $340 as a trade-in on her existing iPhone 11. So out of pocket $859 all up (but locked in to Voda for 24 months @ $69/month) but she's happy.

      • Did she get the receipt with the total amount?

        • I'm not sure what the receipt said. Is there any good use for the receipt with the total amount?

    • +3

Currently with Vodafone, looking to get out ASAP , will be going back to Telstra , Voda is doo doo 💩

    • Curious to know if we get the $150 bonus trade in value.
It says upto $800 trade in bonus for my 13 pro so adding this $1000 would make a free upgrade to 15 pro.

    • +1

FYI, just find out Vodafone charge port out fee $8.00 if you decided to leave.

  • last one was 89 per month, plus additional bonuses

  • +3

Ok, i'm struggling with the math in my head on this one so going to blurt it out.

Currently $40~ with optus pm post paid no contract, only like 30GB, kinda suits but hit it on the reg just slows down etc.

So math wise, i'm prob going to outright buy iPhone 15 Pro Max 256GB $2199

    My head calculated it.
    $99x 24mth = $2367
    $2367 - $1400 = 967
    967 / 24 = $40.30 per month
so kinda breaking even of sorts on the per month plan.
i just lessen the cost of the phone from 2199 - 1400 so i'm 799 out of pocket and have a higher monthly cost..

Just the 24mth lock in is the hmm moment..

    • +4

Plus if you use your mobile for work, you can claim portion of mobile plan expenses during tax return

      • yeah it's a 50/50 work/personal use setup pretty much so would claim the handset and the plan at their full paid prices etc.

          • +1

@yanlianglee: Exactly, most normal people have a dual Sim phone with a cheapy for personal calls anyway.. I want total "severance"

      • +1

Most people who use mobile for work are given a mobile or allowance from office. With the changes to WFH expense calculation (67c/hour), you can no longer claim Home Internet or Mobile expenses separately

        https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/income-deductions-offsets…

        • Or you could choose not to use the 67c/hour calculation

    • -4

      2367+2199-1400=3166
      3166/48= $65.96/mth

      • it's 24 months, not 48.

      • +1

        HolyCr4pMath

    • +3

Works out to be very similar but you get to be on the Telstra network which in my opinion is better than Optus and Voda in most areas. You also get Telstra points for paying the bill and by the end of the 24 months you'll be able to purchase something worth $100 from their gift store.

      • Telstra Points are not included as part of JB HiFi mobile plans.

        • +5

Incorrect. I am on the above plan and get the points

          • +1

@jedimaster: When did you sign up for the plan? I thought as of the new 'upfront' plans, that they dont include telstra points anymore?

      • +1

No Telstra Plus Points, "Free" 30 minutes of international calls (or eSIM, officially) on the JB HiFi Plans.
        Only Telstra direct.

        • Oh dang! They must of changed it in the past year.

          • @drkcld: Yep when they went 'Upfront' a few months ago.

At least you can share data between your JB plans now!

    • +2

looks like you are double counting the bonus - you use it either to reduce the monthly plan orreduce the handset price.

      • yeah but under his optus $40 it doesn't include the new phone…

    • +3

It’s not worth it if you’re paying less than $40 a month for your mobile plan. Getting a $1400 gift card this way is equivalent to getting a $1400 loan at 50% interest over 2 years lol without the flexibility of spending the cash where you want

      • +2

Say you're on highest marginal tax rate (47%} and use your phone and plan 50% for work. Buy a phone for $1400:

        -99 x 24 mobile plan = - $2376
+$1400 phone thanks to gift card
        +(99x24+1400) x 50% x 47% = $887
= net $89 cost for the mobile plan for 24 months.

Though in practice you'd have to amortize the phone over 2y, can't claim it all in 1st year. But assuming you don't get fired from your high paying job for spending too much time on Ozbargain, you're getting a decent deal

        • +1

In that case, wouldn’t you want the most expensive pan and phone available?

          • @onlinepred: In my scenario, every dollar spent after the first $1400 still cost you 76.5c after tax, so not really?

            • @rwandrall: Oh right, I figured if you are on a high paying job, the more you save on tax the better.

          • @onlinepred: you are still paying, you are just getting a % discount from your tax bracket.

        • wouldn't you have to justify how you using the phone for 50% work?

          • +1

@Frozensage: Yes, you need to keep records that support the 50% split (e.g. ratio of phone calls). ATO link https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-deductions-offsets…

            • @rwandrall: Do you have to or can you just have one plan for work and one for personal?

              • @pointnlarf: I'm not an accountant so only my 2c

You'd have to be able to justify having a separate work number I guess. I'd venture it's more reasonable if you're a salesperson spending lots of time on your phone and not wanting to use his personal number with clients, vs a back office person that uses it 5 times a week to check emails

  • +7

When's the $500 gc $69 plan with 10 credit coming back.

    • +1

Inflation, this is what you get now 😅

    • When interest rates drop back to 1.8%…

    • Just anything on a 12 month plan would be nice…

  • Have they got esims?

    • +1

Yes, you can use this on eSIM.

      • +1

        Thanks

    • When I asked Telstra for the e-sim on the JB HI FI plan, I got told no :(

  • Has anyone successfully ported out of Telstra to another service, then ported back to Telstra via the JB Hi-Fi deal in under 30 days?

    • +5

Don't do this, the salesperson will recieve disciplinary action if you lie about it being over 30 days.

      • +1

How is the sales person supposed to know if a customer is lying to them?

        • +6

          Lie detector

        • Because their system shows you were a Telstra customer and what date you ported out

        • They don't until a few weeks after the sale when they are reviewed.

          • +2

@despavr: Well unless JB stores are different, it absolutely does. When i ported out from Boost to an Optus $2 sim a few years back, the guy showed me when i tried to get a 12 month phone deal with $800 credit. I selected (iPhone 11 for memory), selected the plan, gave him my number, when he started entering it all in the system, turned to me and said, you ported out from Telstra yesterday mate, sorry. He then proceeded to tell me that it has to be 30 days, and turned the screen and showed me the port out date. He then told me the only way he could do it was to take a new number and just swap sims.

Feel free to give it a go, im just stating what happened to me

            • @BatmanAU: oh shit man, that might be a new change. did he offer to give you a new number and then change your current service number onto the one on the new service?

              • @despavr: No, he said i just have to swap the sims, so i said and what have two sims, and one with a tonne of data that cant move to my current number, which he said unfortunately yes… I walked out and purchased one outright from OW and claimed it on tax with a cheap sim only deal. I will never go on a plan with a phone ever again, heaps better and can jump around on sim deals and trade phone in every 12 months if you really want too. I traded my iPhone 12 to JB for a $600 gift card and purchased the 13 when they had it on sale for $1000, $400 for a phone and $280 for Boost 365 deal which just expired a month ago.

                • @BatmanAU: ah i see, bummer. you totally arent the target market for these deals.

ill be honest, these sim deals are for ppl who come in, paying $60 a month to vodafone or optus on some old m2m sim and are also looking to do a big outright purchase. they usually can upgrade their data and reception, pay less out of pocket on the day. most of these deals arent suitable for most of ozbargain lol

              • @despavr:

oh shit man, that might be a new change

Ah yes, one of them new few year old changes.

                • @[Deactivated]: Not really, 3 months ago my coworker landed in that scenario.

          • @despavr: i seen it myself on the siebel portal on my account, they can see the date you port out.

            • @gilean: Yes but we don't use siebel anymore, i know you can check but previous port outs and orders but it doesn't come up automatically when processing a new order.

              • @despavr: ah may be that explains. this was a year ago, i literally thought "what an ancient software system" when i seen siebel. glad they moved on.

          • @despavr: so why discipline action against someone who has no way to check if the customer is lying, sounds terrible tbh.

            • @backupper1: bcs technically they're supposed to check through a system, but we usually just take customers word for it.

              • @despavr: Doesn't Console show customer history on the side? I'd take it that they are more strict on it now and enforce it more

      • I personally couldnt care less. Its a bullshit policy.

    • I ported out and back within few days. Just get new number when signing up, port old number to Optus. Buy $2 Telstra SIM card, directly contact Telstra and they will activate $2 SIM card with your old number and swap out the new number with your existing. It’s a bit of a hassle but worth it if you wanna keep your old number and still sign up for deal. Possibly don’t even need to port number to Optus/ another provider if Telstra rep is willing to just straight up swap the number, I only did as I had already ported before contacting Telstra.

      • A couple of years ago, I was able to sign up to a jb hifi deal and got a new number. An hour later, I called telstra and they moved my old number to the new plan.

Any ideas if this still works? Or have they closed that loophole?

        • +1

I did mine month ago with no issue

    • I port to Amaysim, and next day went JB signed up the $69 plan without any issue.

  • +15

Really these are a bit of a joke, who's going to use 300gb a month.
    Honestly Boost @$300 a year X 2 = $600
    Apple Iphone Outright = $2000

    Total = $2600

    This would be $99/mon X 24 = $2376
    Apple Iphone Outright = $2000 - $1400 = $600

    Net cost = $2976

    Dubious value for money.
But if you were in need of more than 30gb/month/work is paying your bills then yes, this is a great deal.
Although if you could pay with a discounted ultimate gift card…

    • +3

      True, Wi-Fi is everywhere.
checked my monthly usage was about 10 GB max
If want to save up money, pay for Woolworth's yearly plan
$200 for 220 GB or $170 for 125 GB per year, plus 10% off grocery monthly.
24 months plan is not a bargain anymore

      • +5

A lot of people who rent don't have Wi-Fi, because that would cost them another 50 or $60 a month

You can just hotspot your phone, and use it on your laptop and even for like Netflix!

So you're saving 7-800 a year on Wi-Fi? And this country has a lot of renters

        • this is true too, absolutely right, I was a renter
hotspot to other devices will easily pass 300GB

        • +4

$99 a month for 300gb on your phone
          or
$30 a month for 30gb on your phone
          +
$59 a month for unlimited nbn at home.

i'd personally cop the 2 discrete ones and not have to hotspot off my phone at home.
          But each to their own.

          • @Drakesy: Unfortunately, I recently got an email from my internet provider saying that from today NBN pricing will increase. This will affect every provider. Mine will be increasing by about $5 a month. But, I'm with you. Better to have home internet than using your phone. Better connection and you'll be killing your phone's battery with all that hotspotting.

    • Works great if you can claim a portion of your bills on tax.

      • You still have to pay the other portion though

    • iPhone 15 @ $1499 - $1400 = $100, + plan $99 x 24 = $2476

      iPhone 15 @ $1499 + $21pm Moose ($504 with 48GB + Banking) = $2003
