Yep, trapping people into plans they don't need for the bait of a $1400 GC. The ironic thing is, When I used to work at Telstra, there was a guy who was recommending all these absurdly unnecessary plans for people who didn't need them (even the elderly) because the commission was higher (VOS or Value of Sale) and he got fired for it. At first he was praised as the sales star until his team leader started monitoring his calls LOL.

      • +1

Just to clarify though - you're not trapped on these plans, they're upfront

  • +4

If this was 12 month or with $30/month cashback then would have been something to look into….miss those days

Until that day, I'm happy being on woolworths mobile for free

  • Does any one know that from Boost mobile to Telstra port in allowed ?

    • No, Boost considered Telstra existing customers

    • No, it wouldn't be allowed. It's the same network, same backend.

      • Okay thank you. I have to find out some free sims for this. Kindly post if any good deals

        • Careful, how long do you have to put out from boost…

      • Any idea if it's the same with Superloop, which I understand sells some sort of abridged version of the Telstra network (not the full network like Boost)?

    • Just load up on all the cashback deals from Boost with CR or SB. You'll get your Tesla in record time.

    • +1

I'm guessing this would be the same with Aldi mobile then?

      • +1

NO Aldi is fine to port out of.

  • What handset can I choose tho?

    • +1

It doesn't have to be a handset. You can purchase anything in the store. The giftcard also doesn't expire, you can make a purchase whenever you want.

      • @despavr Can we stack the "JB Trade-In & get an extra $600 off" offer to get Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 in store?

        • Yes, you definitely can.

  • +1

what's the value for this? No international calls..
previously optus at least offer 10g roaming data and unlimited roaming calls for $65 per month.

  • Can you use the JB Perks extra 5% off offer with this?

    • +2

No as it is not an instore purchase. You can use the 5% off offer with the $1400 giftcard you get to buy anything that is eligible.

  • Just keep in mind they currently now don’t have eSIM support. They say it’s coming but no eta

    • +3

Officially no. But i've seen some customers have their service changed to an eSim at a Telstra store. You can get the plan @ jb and try your luck after @ telstra.

      • Ooo thanks for the tip, I’ll give that a go next time I can get in to a store!

    • +2

You can get an eSIM through the My Telstra app.

      • Nah I tried that. They’re making it all go through the jbhifi app now. It’s new, I did the same plan two year ago and had no problem getting an eSIM then so it’s changed

    • Yes the JB hifi plan have esim.

  • I'm on a $69 telstra plan, is there anyway to talk with telstra (i.e., threaten to leave) to allow myself to reap the benefits of this plan?

    • Even if you did leave, you need to be off the Telstra network for 30 days, and by that time the offer will be over.

      • I was on $69 plan but contract ended 2 months ago.
Ported to Amaysim and then walked in JB signed up new $69 plan (with $700 gc) without any issue.

  • +2

Works out to $40/month for 2 years, I'll stick with my $16/month 25GB Moose Mobile pov pack (also because I only have Optus reception at my house).

    • Saaame.

  • I emailed and tweet DM'd JB Hifi to start stocking a particular expensive monitor so I could also switch to Telstra, use the gift card, to help get the monitor :(
Long story short, no sign of the fancy $2k monitor.

(40" LG high end ultrawide, it's like $2.1k)

  • -2

I only live by one rule, ATAAC. Avoid Telstra At All Costs

    • +5

You must be one of the 1.8% not covered hahaha

  • What is the contract cancellation cost?

    • $99 first month, $800 cancellation fee. It'll also be in the CIS before you sign. Cancelling contracts can hinder your eligibility for other services with Telstra (kind of like credit score but it doesn't affect your history), so i would consider that.

      • So I need to pay the $800 cancellation fee + return the remaining of $1400 on a pro-rate basis?

        • +2

No. You pay a single bill to Telstra of $800. The $800 is pro rata'd at how long you stay. So if you stay one year, your cancellation cost will be $400.

          • +3

            @despavr: So basically $1400 (Gift card) - $800 (contract cancellation fee) = $600 profit?

          • +1

            @despavr: Voucher Repayment Fee
6.2 If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel
that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding
amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher
            Repayment Fee).

6.3 The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your
Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:

            (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;
            (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and
            (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received

            Do they not enforce this?

            • +4

@daniesaurs: Yes. They do. Except $800 is the base value.

              Let me explain.

Whether you sign up to this plan when the giftcard is at the base amount (it’s always $800), or a promotion period where it can be $1000, $1200, $1400 etc.. the provisioning with telstra is always the exact SAME. You will sign the exact same contract as someone signing up to get an $800 giftcard.

Because of this, the repayment is always pro rata’d at $800, and not your promotional giftcard value of $1400. Once the connect is complete, on a JB Hi-Fi system the promotional value giftcard can be printed off.

So yes, the max repayment is $800, not $1400, as it will state on your CIS when you sign up. It’s silly and i don’t know why they do it, or how either party makes profit, but it’s just how it works.

              • +1

@despavr: interesting, no downsides to it then ;)

              • +1

@despavr: @despavr So if I had no moral dilemma in doing so… the cheapest way for me to get a new iphone 15 is to sign up for two of these deals, then cancel the plan within a month?

                $2,800 in vouchers

                - $1,600 in cancellation fees

$1,200 for an Iphone 15 pro max with some accessories

edit: not sure why the cancellation line is bold, sorry.

                • @Evio: Yes. You are right. Though factor in you'll pay the first $99 month upfront.

I do not condone doing it but theres nothing stopping you from doing it, maybe other than if you aren't approved for 2 of those services.

    • +1

I’ve just ported today. Max cancellation is $800 if you cancel on the first month. It reduces by $33.33 with every month you use.

  • What's the max cancellation fee?

    • $800

  • Weird economics. I suppose this is just bribery for people that have their employer pay the monthly bill.

    • +1

good using this for business. Claim $99x24, claim the gst, and if you use the $1400 on a phone claim the gst and phone as well, eventho the $1400 is money created out of thin air.

      • exactly this

        • This is also a good deal for employees.

Those who are on higher wages can use this specific deal to make some savings. Reading some Terms/Conditions and most allow you to reduce your pre-tax earnings once every year with electronics. It states Phones, Tablets, Laptops, so you can claim all three each year legally. But they do not allow you to claim your phone service, especially when it's broken down into 12-chunks on bills.

So here's how this trick works.
You get on this contract, and you pocket the gift card. Then you goto JB Hi-fi to buy a Brand New phone (most expensive iPhone prefered), and use the gift card to bring the costs down. You claim the total of the phone cost down, from your next payslip, so it is salary sacrificed. And voila!

If you want even bigger savings, I would have a look at my payslip and determine at which levels my taxable level is at. Then break these purchases into separate months (Nov Laptop, Dec Tablet, Feb Phone). Buy these items carefully, and sell them Brand New, basically to get 95% of the cash back. Then pocket all that money for myself (eg $3k, $2k, $2k). Lastly I would just use all that cash (eg $7k) to do all my non-taxable shopping like buying groceries or fuel or something something. If you do it smartly you can get most of the savings from your tax reduction to benefit yourself. Big businesses do it all the time, small businesses have these benefits factored in, and Wealthy earners already do this trick. It's your usual middle-class and lower wages earners who can't do this and are oblivious. I'm just sharing something down here for my plebs.

  • It is not really Telsta though is it? It is JB Mobile which uses the Telstra network. How long have they been doing this for? I remember some years ago I took up a similar offer and it was actually signing up to Telstra. But does not look that way anymore.

    • +1

It is Telstra for all intents and purposes.

      • Telstra network, Not Telstra for customer purposes

        • You are a Telstra customer like any other, on these plans.

          • -1

@coxymla: No, you are a JB customer plain and simple. Trust me i tried taking an issue to Telstra with a reception issue and was told they cant help me and i had to go to JB and they will log a job. Just the same as any issues whilst you are on Boost, they redirect you to their contact number and will not help you in store.

      • No, you're wrong. If you join Woolworths, you are their customer. Not Telstras. Same with these new JB Mobile plans.

  • If you signed up for this deal and added a Telstra "Data Sim" additionally would that be able to use the 300GB or not, does anyone know or have tried?

    • +1

No, i'd get a jbhifi data sim. those can data share. its $19 a month

  • Any trade in deals on this?
    Does this have 5G access?
Can anyone confirm cost for Apple esim watch with this?

    • You can get a trade in on your old device, they give you a store credit.
      Yes it does have 5G
$5 per month when i had one about 3 years ago on my Apple Watch 4

      1. Dunno
      2. Yes
      3. $5/mo
  • It makes sense if you need to make $1400 purchase in JB and you need a plan with 300GB per month because it has a wooping 13c/GB. Otherwise, it's a waste of money, much better with that Boost Mobile and BYO device. Last year I had 240GB with Boost and I ended up not using the last 100GB so approximately $100 was wasted.

  • +2

This is a good deal, second best in history and best one over the past 2 years!

  • +2

Downside No international caling for 24 mnths.

  • Is there anyone lives/works around the Chadstone/Waverley/Oakleigh/Bentleigh areas who has Vodafone? If so, how has the service? Are there regular call drop outs? Observed average 5G internet speed?

    Cheers in advance!

  • -1

Be aware that if u cancel or don’t continuevcontract then jab hifi sometimes cancel the $1400 voucher….

    • I don’t think it will be cancelled, you paid for that GC already.

    • Can anyone verify/confirm this has happened? We want to keep the GC for a purchase down the line

      • Can confirm you keep the gift card, just return max $800 or less if you used for couple of months.

        • Did you end up cancelling?

          • +1

@salami: Nah my employer pays for my phone bill so will keep the plan. But I spoke to the jb store manager and he confirmed it’s $800 fee max.

    • This would be a breach of contract

  • -1

I’ve joined 1 month before and atm they only offer $1200 gift card, any chance that I can get an compensation or can I get a port in discount?

    • Same boat as me
      Hopefully we can get something

    • I tried that but they said no since they don’t know that the GC will increased after a week.

  • Hey all, what is the best yearly plan with 250gb and uses Telstra network?where can you find that information out via?thanks

  • +1

Miss the old day where JB Telstra was $69 per month for 12 months and $500 gift card. Then chat to Telstra Rep and asked for $10 off. Work out as

    $69-$10 = $59
    $59*12 = $ 708
    $708 - $500 = $208
$208 / 12 = $17.33 per month for 60GB data and unlimited calls and texts.

    BEST DEAL EVER !!!!

    • +2

wait till you hear some of us got $20 off

      • Yeah I heard some reported they got $20 off. Down to $7.33 Best of the best

  • +1

Anyone know if you can later add on a smartwatch esim plan with this MVNO?

  • This an upfront plan or bills on the old billing system?

  • These deals are out of control. I remember the days you get $300 over a $49 plan for 12 months

I've calculated the cost if you were to buy an iPhone 15 PM 256GB. It works out to be $132 a month which is $35 cheaper than Telstra's plan if you needed 300 gigs of data.

Even if you select the basic plan with 50 gigs it works out to be $20 cheaper per month.

However you need to fork out $799 out of pocket.

  • Porting from Vodafone esim to Telstra esim is taking it's time

Been 4 hours and hasn't come through unfortunately

  • -2

This is similar to taking a personal loan at 57% pa. Go for it, it is a bargain!

  • +1

Don't do this if you don't need all that data. I got on this plan, but with only 200gb, in Nov 2021. Been waiting ever since for it to end. Use something like 10-15% max each month. Been throwing away $100 haha Also, you have to pay back the gift card if you leave early. I got some good stuff out of it from JB atleast.

    • +1

You don't claim it on tax or any other work purposes?

      • -2

No, because I don't make a habit of committing tax fraud on phone plans.

    • If you leave early you pay only $800 max back to jb

      • +2

if he signed up in nov 2021 then he has to pay out the months as well.

        • Not sure what the amount was, but there was a section for the plan itself, and another specifically for the bonus.
My plan finishes in a few weeks, all paid off, and they still want $70 "to leave early."

  • +1

these giftcard deals are always tempting however i feel - buying outrage phone are always better value.

I mean we can always get 5% discount of gift card for jb/bigw/gg (i know sometimes we could manage up to 10% gc with all those WW/coles gift card promo) + i time my phone purchase with my overseas trip and claim gst. so for $1500 phone i will be paying $1289 approx.

for sim i use boost yearly deal.

ps. i miss old days of 3 mobile! $19 hot cap plan with free LG U8180!!

    • Do this deal and your 'outright' phone could be $500-$600 cheaper ;)

  • Does anyone know whether its possible to share data with other sims via this plan? If so, what is the lowest cost sim you could get to share data with. Thanks :)

    • +1

$19 jb m2m mobile broadband sim

  • Anyone know what the cooling off period/cancellation policy would be? I would like to sign up for this however I dont want to be locked in to them for 24 months or stuck repaying $1400 GC that i dont need if my house is not good coverage with them. Can i cancel after a few weeks if coverage is bad and just return the giftcard?

    • 24 months contract is the worst possible way to "test coverage". Buy a month to month telstra or boost sim for that.

    • +1

You keep the giftcard and pay back $800.

      • so, take the plan, get 1400 gift card, cancel plan, pay 800 = $600 profit?
