I'm in front of a Coles store that opens at midnight (in Adelaide), and people are already lining up outside the door 15 minutes before the opening time (if I mention ethnicity I know I'll get into trouble). In other nights there's hardly anyone here. Unbelievable!

    • 😆

      Ethnicity: OzBargainer 😂

    • Crazy.

If you can't find any right after open, check with staff, they may hide them behind the counter. It happened before.

  • Has anyone used these to buy movie world passes? I see village roadshow them parks is included? Thanks.

  • Is there any history of tampered/cloned cards like with the Apple gift cards?
Where someone steal the card, replace it with a fake one and steal your money after you buy it and activate it?

  • Ozb showed out this morning and cleaned out Coles… got there like 30min after open walked past registers grandparents and the grandkids, that's some true ozb spirit right there family event!

    • Which one was this?

To the guy at Norwest Coles at 7am sorry I found your stash and moved it 🤣

  • visited 2 coles nearby around 6-6:30am, none has $100 gift cards available (checked with staff), I had seen them yesterday in the same stores during lunch time, bunch of them but all disappeared this morning….

  • Couldn’t find any stock $100 cards at local Coles (2153).

  • My Coles has many people this morning , not for the Home (phew). Though only $50, couldn’t see $100. And the Home is located at the Ultimate section lol. Got myself 2x Home $50. Just needed for now.

  • I lined up at my local Cole’s this morning amongst families with all there 9 children and cousins who sprinted into the store. Most people there took waaaaay more than 10 each, some people pulled the full stacks off the wall and ‘walked down random aisles’.
Thankfully the $100 home cards where full replenished and I got 5 and gave my 6th to the guy behind me at the gift card stall.

Local Coles, as soon as it opens, swamps of Asian came into the store and went straight to the Giftcard section. No offence I’m Asian too but the staff was looking disgusted and amazed at the same time lol. They literally grabbed everything including the non-discounted like Him and Her cards lol. One dude grabbed 10 Kids card $30. I couldn’t even get passed them so just grab a coconut water at half price and went home. That must be a scene for the security guy watching cameras.
I should have bought more ultimate cards when it was 15% off online some months ago.
    How’s yours?

    • Last year, Ultimates 15% off later with plenty of stock. I think Ultimates are of better options than TCN now.

I didn't upvote here. Nor did I go to the store.

    • When I worked at Coles years ago this happened the first time we had a gift card sale. Store opened 7am and a flock of people sprinted to the gift card stand and started arguing over the cards. None of them were our regular Wednesday morning folk and the only thing they bought were the cards

      • Yeah they are the regulars doing so they either try to resell them for a profit. Or they are doing this for big purchases at the big retailers. They ain't the usual customers at Coles for anything else.

Unfortunately i believe a lot of them are grandparents being sent by their families to do this chore to earn some money or doing the needy for their kids or grandkids

Its only possible to do if you ain't working.

  • Went to four different Coles this morning. Only one had $100 gift cards. At least I have enough for my Rog Ally. Sorry JB, you are about to get a lot of $50 gift cards 🤣

Saw one family at two of the Coles I went to. All four members getting 5 cards each.

    • bro went to 4 different coles within 20 mins of open! Boss!

      • They all opened at 6. Took me about 40 minutes 🤣

  • +2

All gone at castle hill within 15 minutes

    • All gone like all categories gone? Even baby?

I couldn’t see it. It was so many people. I gave up

  • +9

I needed some for an IPhone purchase so I rocked up at 6am to see what it was like, as my coles mates had told me it is usually a huge amount of Daigous hitting the cards.

Honestly what I saw made me embarrassed to be Asian and associated with them haha - it was like a crowd of mindless sheep with blank looks on faces scurrying in and out. To their credit I didn’t see any pick up hidden stashes, they just congregated at the gift card section with the blank look on their faces.

Anyway, was a waste of time to save $37, especially copping the looks from non Asian customers as
Well as listening to the condescending warnings from Coles staff in slow, idiot proof English, not to buy more than 5. Too early in the day to be talked down to like a child that doesn’t understand English haha

    • +1

      Obey

    • +3

I agree, totally not worth it. I was paying for my 5 gift cards when a guy rock up behind me and was turned away by the cashier because he recognised him trying to buy another 5. The third lady in the queue, an elderly woman in her 70s ask the cashier “oh, they doin’ those gift cards again?” Not sure if she was annoyed or just disgusted, or both. For me the whole scene was surreal and embarrassing and I’ll definitely never do this again

  • +11

Was at South Melbourne Coles this morning, they were just like packs of hungry animals, the staff had to drop the cards on the floor just like a zookeeper, and they were all gone within 5 seconds.

    • So none left? 😔

      • None of the discounted ones, sorry

  • Thats why I decided to purchase more at 10% discount from wws yesterday. The frustrating fact was that I always use OW prepaid visa card to buy ultimate gift card and yesterday the new purchased prepaid cards were not valid to pay for the ultimate gift card (old card still worked on spot)

  • -1

Can someone confirm that can you get Woolies cards and pay at Coles?

  • +1

Sounds rough out there atm, rising cost of living making a big appearance today?

When I went to buy some this time last year, I was the only one there at my local Coles with heaps of $50 and smaller denomination cards available, I was convinced the $100 cards were a myth and still do. But didn’t see too many ‘daigous’ last year.

Decided not to participate this year, just here for the comments. Sounds embarrassing by the looks of it

  • Can someone pls confirm is there any numner of tcn home card usage limit when you use them at goodguys physical store purchase? I am looking to buy fridge from goodguys and i have 10 tcn home cards from previous promotions to use? Thanks

    • I used 16 $100 TCN gift cards at The Good Guys on one transaction last year. No issues. Staff was happy to split payment.

      • Thanks mate. Glad to hear

      • Staff was happy - Of course but

        Queuing customers weren't happy!!

Pretty cruisey out east Melb - couple of people here and there. Spoke to one of the staff - one guy had already visited 6 stores: have to admire the determination. Sad to hear about what's happening in town - harks back to covid loo paper times (stares off into distance)

    • Oooh which area is this haha

      • I had no issues around Cranbourne area. Visited Cranbourne West, Clyde North, Cranbourne North and Lynbrook Coles. Only Clyde had $100 cards, but all shops had heaps of $50 cards

  • Managed to hit 2 Coles on the way to work this morning and got 5 each of $50 and $30 (was hoping to get $100s but mysteriously all gone at open). Definitely ain't worth the hassle and goodness me do I hope I don't look as desperately ravenous as a lot of the other people buying them :O

May the odds ever be in your favour

  • Can i buy officeworks gift cards using these at coles?

  • +2

Feeding frenzy for outer east Melbournce Coles (near me) this morning.

Sadly though, perhaps in the mayhem, a few others bought the wrong gift cards, either non-discounted TCN or other's (eg ultimategiftcard) version of KIDS and TEEN.

Annoyingly though, I had already told those few that those cards weren't discounted but they still proceeded to buy… and then seek refunds.

    • and then seek refunds

      good luck with that

      • -2

I must have got lucky, not only did I get a refund for my ultimate but also $75 (15% of $500) deposited back onto my card.

    • It reminds me last year when I went to a Coles a couple of minutes after opening at the start of the 15% off Ultimate gift cards deal.

There were about ten people gathered around the gift card shelf, trying to figure out which gift cards to purchase. One person grabbed a TCN Him gift card and went to the checkout, then proceeded to get cranky with the young checkout person for that gift card not being discounted. Rightio…

No one was going near the Ultimate Home gift cards, probably because it was not pictured in the catalogue, so I grabbed five from the shelf. Someone noticed I did that and asked if it was discounted, and I said in a slightly elevated voice holding up a gift card “yeah these are discounted too”. I had never seen people move so fast at a gift card shelf!

  • +3

Quite amazed with the way it was rushed and grabbed. In all fairness, I was also one among the gang, but this is 1st time I was going after this Coles TCN 15%. To my surprise, I was almost 1st person to enter the store, no 100$ denominations were available, one sneaky customer straight walked into the checkout counter with 5x100$ GC. Surely it was shop lifted yesterday.

One of the customers tried to check out 10x50$ cards, the staff at bill counter gave a grumpy face and went to the extent of asking for his driving license. Oh no, this is looking like a lot of policing too.

Possibly, we are better off with Woolies 10%off ultimate card whenever they put the sale, I have seen that is being available throughout the week without any mad rush. It's ok to give up 5% to deal with these ugly scenes.

    • After all these efforts, ended buying 50x 5 Teen card. That suffices the requirement to buy Google pixel watch half price at JB. Fair deal.

    • -1

Ugh I don’t bother with anything under $100. It’s too embarrassing trying to buy a high cost item in $50 lots. Even the time I bought an iPhone with 25x cards (of different values) was embarrassing enough.

      • -1

Staff at the counter was forcefully asking me to scan flybuys card as if it has become national identity proof. Although I did have FB card, I told I am not scanning it, what you want to do, do you want to block the purchase? Then, they had no choice to allow me to finish the purchase. Quite awkward.

        • So it's the fly buys cards that prevents people from doing more than five cards per day?

    • Shoplifting to save 15% is not worth it. I hope Coles put more measures in place to catch these crooks

Also there's some racism here suggesting all Asian looking buyers. Well if so they are some professionals doing routines one store to another.

Thing is they remind me of daigous buying out milk powder to earn a margin

  • Can you use multiple of these to buy a single job hifi card of higher value?

    • You can't buy cards with cards

    • If you buy it online at JB, you can convert the cards to JBHifi gift cards via the Card Network website.

  • +1

Sounds like another mad embarrassing rush. Hold out a few days and they will have more stock. Jesus.

    • Good point, might have a restock at some point.

    • Do they restock everyday?

      • No

  • Staff probably got first pick. I suppose that’s the benefit of being staff.

  • -8

Rocked up exactly at 7am when store opened at Roselands NSW and already a bunch of international Asians sprinted past me and grabbed stacks of the Home $100’s.
All the gift cards were sold out within 5 minutes of store open. Even saw one Asian guy grab around 30 and he didn’t come back even though I told him there was a cap of 5 so I guess he managed to purchase them.
I felt embarrassed to be Asian despite being ABC. The staff looked pretty disgusted.

    • "international Asians" hahaha

      • probably getting downvoted by all the internationals too LMAO

      • +1

how do you even distinguish? are they the ones that sound like Uncle Roger?

        • They only speak Chinese. I tried to tell some of the ones flocking around the gift card stalls not to buy more than 5 and to put some back but they just pretended not to hear and went back to conversing in Mandarin amongst themselves, which I don’t speak.
Uncle Roger has a Malaysian/Singlish accent. The ones at my Coles are straight outta mainland China, probably on a hustle for some daigous.

          • @spast1ka: The technical term is fresh off the boat.

The ones who refuse to learn English or being Australian by learning local culture and manners are the ones who are despicable ignoring other people and no courtesy snatching milk powder, gift cards what not at supermarkets.

These are different to ABCs or the ones born locally or ones which have learnt manners

These are like daigous I agree. And their actions are totally unacceptable

  • +3

Maybe a rookie error from me, but the T&Cs state it can take up to 24hrs to load funds. So when I went to JB to pay straight after the cards were empty.

    • +1

      Yes - live and learn.

I did the same mistake last time round. Funnily though, the customer before me also encountered the issue such that I suspected it would happen to me so apologised to the staff in advance.

      • Yep. Whoopsie. Was trying to work out some complex way I got scammed before I just decided to read the T&Cs. Out of curiosity, how long did it take for funds to come through?

        • +1

Hard not to think 'scam'! I think last time Ichecked
a few times and then gave up. I think I recall the funds appearing that night after the morning purchase, but JB was closed at that point.

Went back the next day and purchased.

          • +1

@Porker: Awesome thanks for the advice :) Maybe next time this pops up I'll prompt the OP to add those details to the post. We can't have been the only people caught out by it.

            • +2

@Lockdude: i remember the first time i bought mine, i went home and checked online for a balance of $0. thought it was a scam and i'd lost all my money. so same experience but luckily less embarassing.

              • +2

@Spec: Honestly, the staff at JB were really good and didn't make me feel awkward at all. They're holding the items for me to come back either tonight or tomorrow morning depending on when the gift cards load. They understood the situation and were really good about it.

I must say, in general I've always had really positive experiences with JB HiFi in store customer service. They seem to have the right level of common sense and empowerment from their managers to make obvious simple decisions. It's really good to see and they're probably some of my favourite customer service reps. Maybe mileage might vary between stores, but the ones I go to - their service is consistently great.

          • @Porker: yep, happened to me this morning at good guys, doh! live and learn..

    • +3

Definitely second that this warning should've been mentioned somewhere before now (who had time to read the back of the card in the morning rush?). If not in the main ozB post then by some comments. I've kept up with all the comments here, so having the GCs turn up empty in store was not a pleasant surprise.

    • UPDATE: The cards I bought pre-8am this morning finally started showing balance around 4:15pm today.

  • The staff at my local Coles have them stored under the service area with a sign at the GC area indicating as such. I only went in around 8am, an hour after opening, so I'm guessing that first hour was traumatizing enough for them to start doing that.

    • That's the way it should be done in the first place imo.

  • +10

Haha so I thought I’d just try my luck with the Coles on the way to work, figured worst case I’d get myself some lunch.

Went in, totally picked clean. Then as I walk out noticed some shifty dude in the aisles looking sus. Took a hunch and found like a huge stash of $100’s and $50’s. I took 5 and walked towards the giftcard section to put the rest back, but I noticed shifty dude loitering in the GC area after having just transacted his first lot, so I walked around the store for a while, came across a bloke who I had seen earlier missing out and asked him if he wanted some of the ones I had found. He laughed and with a twinkle in his eyes showed me ANOTHER stash he had also found haha. Fellow ozbargainer.

Anyway that’s 10 more cards at that store for others now 😂

  • Why are these cards so popular, isit because they can be stacked use at JB or Goodguys? Or isit because of the 15%?

    • +1

Both, if you're buying something from JB/GG anyway it's essentially an extra 15% off

  • +2

Went to Coles they said $100 ones not on discount. After going to few shops now I have 30x $50 of them FML

    • +1

      Stitched up

    • I was told the exact same thing this morning and I had to end up buying $50 ones instead of the $100 :(

  • Plenty left northland vic

  • Heaps at coles birtinya and no signage to say they are 15% off but scanned 15% off at checkout
