HP Victus 16" FHD 144Hz Laptop: Intel i7-12700H, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD $1299 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

80

I was looking for a laptop to use for some video editing, photo editing and that is pretty much mostly connected to the tv in the family area and my computer literate friend looked around and recommended it. Apparently it is a good price so I thought I'd share. I would love to hear your opinion on it (while it is still in the returnable window of time!) and if that opinion is negative, I'd love alternative suggestions. So, either, my pleasure passing on a deal or um, thanks for the advice! :)

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2023

Good specs for the price, however, the display is garbage for any sort of photo-editing work (only 45% NTSC, 250 nits). But since you're hooking it up to an external display, that shouldn't concern you.

Buying laptops from JB is generally a bad idea as their prices are heavily inflated.

The victus suffers from a number of issues, including but not limited to:

    • Super bad hinge wobble, more so than any other HP rig, jarrod have covered it plenty in his videos already

    • below average cooling solution, low powered 3060 ramping up at only 100w and cpu performance is also lackluster - running at lower wattages to reduce the load on the thermals

    • 144hz panel sku here is just sad, it is ips, but the worst ips there is, 45% ntsc panels is ~ 62.5% srgb, except HP's colour calibration is non existent so (at least according to laptopmedias test on their sample) result in only 50% srgb colour coverage, now thats extra shoddy

    • no other 'nice to haves' at all, no thunderbolt despite an intel rig, 70wh battery is not enough considering high uncore power draw on 12th gen chips, in general, cut down in every aspect

Others and I have often posted this LOQ link as a deal, coupled with elevated cashback making it ~1.2k in the end, makes a very affordable option with a good screen and otherwise solid specs. Jarrod also rated it one of the best gaming laptops he reviewed this year (of course, no legion, but you have to consider the pricetag here).

    • Thanks for the Lenovo recommendation. What is the cash back you are referring to as I can’t see it on the Lenovo website?

      • +1

There was a 40% cashback on Lenovo a week prior

    • Thanks for the comment. How funny, i initially did buy a 7th gen lenovo legion (LNRC0040AU) from OW (same specs and price but rtx 3050) and it was because I watched Jarrod Tech videos! But, they cancelled the order. The LOQs were my second choice but I couldn't get their price low enough, but didn't know about cashback, so thanks for that. was a bit hesitant to throw my money at lenovo again. I checked the LOQ prices on the education store and it is $7 cheaper - but from the sale price, so cashback would be the better option.

It is my understanding that overall people seem to be pretty happy with Lenovo but as my last 2 lenovos died at the 13 and 15 month respectively mark each (one low end one high end, light to medium usage, neither legions or LOQs), I was a bit hesitant to try again with the brand.

Completely understandable mate, at the end of the day delicate electronics like these can vary a lot between batches and while generally reviews have pitched legions as the better option, clearly you got the short end of the sticks both times.

I still wouldn’t recommend this victus deal however, asking 1.3k for a below average 3060 in late 2023 is far from a deal.

Might be worth chasing up on a Dell deal if you feel like going that route this year. About 1.5k for a 4060 iirc.

    • "Buying laptops from JB is generally a bad idea as their prices are heavily inflated."

Agreed. Before the black Friday sales, they had a "clearance" label on a laptop I had my eye on, but have since removed that. With the 20% off for Black Friday, it comes at $30 cheaper using the higher "original" price as the base instead of the "clearance" tag, but still a saving technically, but scummy. I told them but the rep checked with his manager and wouldn't budge. So I walked. LOL.

    • What are your thoughts on Legion Slim 5 vs LOQ? Is it worth the extra few hundred dollars.

I like a slightly lighter laptop personally but not needing a full-on gaming laptop, more like a workhorse. But I like future proofing myself

      • Legion Slim is overall better than the LOQ, that’s for sure, but raw performance wise, they definitely don’t differ a lot. I think you do get higher spec options as well.

Its mainly build, as LOQ is a rebranded ideapad gaming and legion slim is well… legion.

    HP Omen 16" AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, Nvidia 3060, FHD 144hz, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB SSD $921.40 (64% off) Delivered @ HP via eBay

This is a Black Friday level deal for an HP gaming laptop

Top spec OMEN chassis with similar specs for $370 less

Meaning this Victus is at least $500 overpriced

    • Um thanks ChatGPT but that deal was from August and has long since expired. And i need a laptop now. I'm thinking i might just go an Acer Nitro 5 i5 with rtx 4060 which is the same price unless anyone has some dire tales of woe to share. Thanks for all your comments 😊

      • And i need a laptop now.

There are times during the year when good deals do not exist for certain products

Currently, there are no good deals for gaming laptops so unless Cyber Monday is spectacular, there is nothing to recommend

… that is pretty much mostly connected to the tv in the family area

Question why you need a laptop in the first place if the TV is going to be used as the main display

In terms of speed, value and upgrade potential, you are much better off buying any of the sub $1K PC deals from the usual suspects:

        • Sorry, you've misunderstood me. I call the monitor in the family room the tv but we work in there lot. And it needs to be a laptop because it can then act as the emergency backup laptop.

  • Although, turns out I can now get the 2022 Lenovo 15.6" Legion 5i Gaming Laptop Core i7-12700H/16/512 RTX 3050Ti, similar specs to the victus, on paper, only difference is RTX 3050Ti in legion, and rtx 3060 in the victus (which was why my friend recommended it he has been trying to defend this to me! lol).

So, out of these two which would you pick? (none is an okay answer too).
    Lenovo 15.6" Legion 5i Gaming Laptop Core i7/16/512RTX3050Ti LNRC0040AU
    - 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-12700H, 14C (6P + 8E) / 20T, P-core 2.3 / 4.7GHz, E-core 1.7 / 3.5GHz, 24MB
    - NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6, Boost Clock 1695MHz, TGP 95W
    - 16GB RAM DDR5-4800
    - 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) IPS 300nits Anti-glare, 165Hz, 100% sRGB, Dolby Vision, G-Sync, DC  dimmer
    - +ves= better screen
-ves = no micro sd card slot, 3050Ti 4GB

    Acer Nitro 5 15.6-inch i5-12450H/16GB/512GB SSD/RTX4060 8GB Gaming Laptop AN515-58-53RF
    -  Intel® Core™ i5-12450H Processor
    - 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz slim bezel LCD (250-300 nits)
    - NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060 8GB GDDR6 dedicated
    - 16GB RAM (DDR4), 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
    - +ves = rtx 4060
-ves = probably worse build maybe, worse screen than legion

  • No touch screen and shitty display = no thanks

  • Yeah, this one will be connected to a screen 90% of the time, hence no cares about those things.

  • Thanks all, i decided to combine the requirements for this and a future purchase and bought the lenovo legion slim 5 14 inch, with AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840HS; 32 GB LPDDR5X-6400MHz,1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC; Display:14.5" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), OLED, Glare, Non-Touch, HDR 500, 100%DCI-P3, 400 nits, 120Hz; RTX™ 4060 Laptop GPU 8GB GDDR6 from the EDU Store ($58 difference from normal Lenovo shop) $1959.30. So, hopefully that lasts for more than 13 months. lol.
