Good but it needs more Antennas.

Will this abduct me in the night and take me back to its mothership?

    • +7

      This is the mothership

    • +2

It will also organise a good probing.

Who the f is paying $1300 for a router? Asus have lost the plot.

    • -5

I just use the trash ones you get with a new ISP sign up, routers don't last long enough to shell out $$$ for.

      • +6

        routers don't last long enough

        Yeah, they don't if you…

use the trash ones you get with a new ISP sign up

      • I"m using a "trash one" at the moment and it's capable, but you cannot backhaul your logs, run a VPN, have a decent firewall OR update it to patch against securiyt holes.

If you find your bank account suddenly empty, you can bet someone is sitting on your router MITM you. (read up about VPNFilter)
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPNFilter

These kinds of risks need routers to be regularly updated and patched… Thats the main reason to "spend $$$" .

Having said this, I don't think it has become a "thing" yet in Aus, but brazil and lots of other places have massive estates of old PWNED router equiment being used as botnets to attack others. I'd rather stay out of that party.

I've had my gt ax-11000 for 5ish years, runs like a dream and outperforms any trash ISP router

        • I have the same (gt ax11000) not as long (2 years) and been super happy with it.

I’m wondering if it’s worth upgrading to this one axe16000 ?

I guess you could use both for a two story house.

Bear in mind that the security features free for life on this unit (and other asus routers to be fair) are a $100 per year subscription on TPlink, eero, google etc. So with those you might get a nice tri-band setup for $500, but by the time they're of replacement age they've cost the same anyway!

      • I'm shocked by how much they've gone up. I got an ac88u a few years ago for less than $500 which I'm pretty sure was Asus' TOTL router at the time. Now its $1300… I know inflation is a thing but it's not that bad.

    • I did, I've had it from day 1, and I expect it to last for 6 years minimum.

I didn't buy it because of the "gaming", I got it for the hardware, 50+ devices (mainly wireless light bulbs [thanks OzBargain]) had my old router struggling (TP-Link c2600).

I've got Merlin FW on mine and it's awesome, also, yes, I'm using the 2x 10GbE WAN/LAN ports.

Still waiting for one of these things to be able to use the antennas to walk and bring the wifi signal closer to me

    • +1

it does that while you are asleep

  • +1

Want the TP link one with the moving antennas

  • I wonder how many people use the trend micro security features..

    • Curious on why you would say that, I had them on the older AC5300 and can assure you they work, and are useful.

I caught a lot of very dodgy advertising links that are being served to mobile phones and tablets etc, being blocked by the router, which let me investigate a little.
Of course as soon as you leave the house and move those devices to 5G you're screwed unless you set them up with permanent backhaul VPN through your router (which you can easily do with inbuilt VPN services, and I did that when we travelled to Japan).

      • +1

I'm just wondering how many ppl use the feature.
However, consider that all your browser traffic is going thru and saved by trend.
If you use a vpn, like proton netshield enabled, you probably dont need it.

        • +1

I don't use that feature or the QoS because I don't want my data collected.

          • +1

@Loopholio: Yeah. It would be nice, just not sure what they do with any data collected.
            Shame. Such a waste.

            • @BatsRule: Too right. I was pissed off when I found out my shiny new router had dodgy QoS. The next router I buy won't be ASUS and I'll make sure there is no built-in data harvesting.

  • I'm clueless. Got a 10 year old modem that came from iiNet. It's HFC. Feels very much like time to update but what do my family need this for? Like updating to the best when Indo so update. Is this it?

    • -1

This router is pretty designed exclusively for people who think they need it.

If you're not one of them - then it's just a waste of money.

        Cheers.
I asked ChatGPT what it thought.
Said Netgear Nighthawk RAXE300: Best overall Wi-Fi router.

        TP-Link Archer AX6600: Best high-performance router.

Google Nest WiFi Pro: Easiest wireless router to use, ideal for mesh networks.

TP-Link Archer AX10: Best budget wireless router.

Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR1000: Best gaming router.

Eero Pro 6E: Best affordable Wi-Fi 6E mesh network.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000: Offers bleeding-edge network performance, especially for gamers.

        • +1

Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR1000: Best gaming router.

          REALLY?

          Cons:
          No multi-gig internet
          No parental controls
          Subscription-locked security

          Doesn't sound better to me…

          • +1

@DisasterArea: I'd take ChatGPT opinion with a large dose of salt. I'm sure you'd be right.

            • @seamonkey: Possibly it stopped being trained in ?2021? :) - maybe that was cream back then.. even the AXE16000 while very much cream now, will not be when wifi7 starts to become ubiquitous.

Two main features that are often overlooked are that these do not rely on any outisde service to work (bar the trend DNS protection stuff of course), and they can backhaus their logs to anywhere you define.

TPLINK / eero / google and just about anything provided by an ISP don't do that… (generalising)

  • +1

HODL - WIFI 7 will be out next year!!

    • +1

It is out now, but that doesn't change the fact that there are no devices that use it. i.e. pretty pointless statement. Nothing is more future proof than the future.

      • +1

Any router with Wi-Fi 7 that is out now doesn't have the final Wi-Fi 7 spec.

  • Damn just bit the bullet on the TP-Link AXE300 for $800…

  • Whats the WAN to LAN speed on these things? Can I actually saturate a 1000/50 connection with this?

    • I'm sure you can saturate 1Gbps with much less. I was getting 8-900Mbps with my Edgerouter-X which only cost me ~$80

    • Easily, you can do that with even the free crap Optus give you (I know because I'm doing that). In theory though the QoS and gaming features will mean you can prioritise traffic. Not a problem I've ever had on a 1000/40 connection.

I would imagine the smarts would be being able to get by with a 250/20 connection thanks to QoS keeping all yout gaming traffic and streams happy at the same time, an actual money saver… but who wants to go that slow these days?

What does a 4k stream need these days? 20Mbps?

  • I have no need for this router, but damn it looks cool!

The AX11000 is more than enough with a 10gb port already… pretty future proof.
The only addition seems to be the 6ghz frequency which is almost a line of sight tech, and hence pretty pointless unless you've got 6ghz mesh devices over a multi-gig wired backbone and then you're talking what, add a pair of ET12's .. ($2500 total outlay on routers).

I'm sure some people have a mansion where that would be needed though.

I haven't opened my 16000 yet. I keep looking at the box and thinking it's the same price as a Yamaha RX-V6A amp
I might get more service out of a proper 4k and Atmos amp than I will out of running this router.
