I am seeing a weird increase in cheap flights via China at the moment. Hopefully this can push the market down.

    • +2

China's economy is not in a good shape at the moment. They need passengers flowing through their airports.

Singapore, Cathay, JAL, and ANA needs some competition at the moment.

      • +23

Youth employment is 100%. No need to report on it.

        Things are great!

        • +7

Australia also sings a happy tune!

        • +5

          I thought it was 200% :)

        • I read there aren't enough workers because of dwindling demographic.

      • +2

What can you do with 3 hour layover? Shopping? Taking a day trip? How is this going to boost their economy?

        • +1

airport taxes and duty free shopping/food and beverage

          • +1

@AnyFurtherDiscount: Not to mention if they make a good impression this time, you might be more inclined to visit next time.

            • @t25: my friend from France just lost their luggages flying with CZ to sydney, talking about good impression.

        • +1

China gov make get visa from there office in person in aus before leave

  • +2

May is the good time to visit.

Weather is very nice around that time.

    You will miss Sakura

    • +2

Depends what area you are visiting..

      • In which areas will Cherry blossoms be blooming in May or June?

        • +2

Further up North perhaps very early May (also depends on the particular year), chances are limited. Early April is generally the best time.

        • -1

          North Korea

        • I think it's too late for most of Japan. Hokkaido potentially in early May

        • I saw sakuras in mid May in Hakodate.

  • +14

Just a note there's many dates out of sydney on qantas in may and june for $950 return non-stop. But china southern is a good option if you're happy to travel an extra 12-20 hours for a saving of $300-400.

    • Thanks for the helpful info. I appreciate it.

    • +18

Only fly qantas if you are prepared your flight getting delayed/cancelled for god knows what the reason is. Take a look at https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/qf59 which is SYD-HND, and count the number of green vs orange + red.

      • +11

Yeah you'd have to have learned absolutely nothing from the past few years to still be flying qantas if there's anyone else.

        • +6

just flew back from nz with Qantas, oh the toilets don't work, but they should be fine once we are up in the air…

Seemed like pensioners as flight attendents too, were quite grumpy!

      • +6

Yep. Flew Brisbane - Hong Kong via Sydney. 3 out of 4 of the flights were delayed. Only one counter was staffed in Sydney, made me missed the flight to Brisbane and had to wait 3 hours. I was yelled at by 3 Qantas staff at once and other passengers were checking on me to make sure I was ok. Tried to ask for names so I can complain online, apparently they are not required to give me even their first name

Brisbane to Melbourne domestic was just as bad. Flight was cancelled and made me change to a flight that had a stop over in Sydney…

        • +1

I never bother with qantas for connections or time-sensitive trips. For example when transiting through LAX, you couldn't pay me to take QF11, American Airlines is a lot lot more reliable but you miss out on the A380.

      • -2

The reasons are known to everyone.

        1. HND is the busiest domestic airport in Japan with a busy intl terminal nearby
        2. New Year period is the busiest peak season in Japan, like our Christmas, everyone is going home or traveling overseas for holiday.
        3. HND has lost its C runway due to the 2 Jan crash, the worst timing it could have
        4. Extra non-scheduled military flights departs from HND to send support to survivors of the 1 Jan earthquake in Ishikawa. Many areas are still in isolation with trucks and ships cannot approach, due to landslides damaging all roads and the seabed has risen for 4 meters at the port.

In combination of the above, around 200 flights are cancelled everyday + almost every flight is delayed in HND at the moment.

      • Nah I dont fly QF again, unless I dont have a choice.

    • Qantas seems worth that extra money, saving $400 for 20 hours of your time, when your fundamentally break it down really isn't worth it when you are travelling.

      • +1

I get what you are saying but honestly I would love for a 20 hour layover in China. Go explore the city for half a day and head back to the lounge when you’re bored enough

      • +3

If you are a family of 4, that would be 1600.

    • +6

Qantas is now a third world class carrier, hopeless.

      • +5

Every plane landed at Queenstown except Qantas, their pilots are crap, tried to land twice, couldn't do it. I checked the Queenstown Airport website, the Virgin plane landed successfully 20mins later, so the crosswind suddenly stopped for Virgin? I think it was a crappy pilot useless. Made me travel 7 hours on a bus from Christchurch.

        • +1

Damn. Had no idea how bad qantas is today
It’s like worse than the budget airlines

  • +3

It could be just Off Peak season from Chinese market. But that 46Kg is good excuse for shopping fest. There's some good stuff buy there, especially with currency rates.
BTW a 3.5hr stop over in China.

    • +1

that's a good point, it's extremely easy to fill up a second luggage in japan just from shopping lol

      • What to buy?

        • +8

          Pokemon cards

        • +2

          Gundam

        • +9

          Tentacle-centric manga

        • With some tiny exceptions, 99% of every consumer good and honestly - building materials, are from China.

Look around your house or apartment.

Yeah, everything there could be bought for 1/10th the price.

        • Kitkaks

        • Gashapon

      • What, are you going to bring 20kg and carry on, worth of stuff from here? Just put all the stuff you need into the carry on. That will maximise your return trip luggage capacity (46kg).

I've mange to smuggle 15kg into carry on luggage.
        Hee hee
But each to there own. :-)

        • Yeah, most of the stuff mentioned is small and doesn't really required additional 23kg checked luggage. It would be cheaper ordering that stuff online and pay for delivery than flying to Japan for some cards, comics and small goods

  • Last few months reviews on Product review aren’t great

  • @iwantthatflight Any direct flight to Japan on special?

  • +6

looking for japan flights but different airline :(

  • +5

    Cheaper than jetstar

    • +11

And better! (Free Food & entertainment)

      • +2

And luggage. Also another benefit of these Chinese airlines is that they also serve some other Japanese ports like Fukuoka, Osaka Kansai and Sapporo.

Edit: can't see other ports on special now, but sometimes they also include them.

    • +43

I feel better with mainlanders than drunk Aussies who double my body weight and smells bad BO

      • +26

        That's why I don't fly Jetstar/Virgin to Japan and I don't go to Bali.

      • +1

        bruh

      • -3

        smells bad BO

I see grammar isn’t high on the list.

      • Feel the same but I can't say that. They will play the racist card!

Last flight with Jetstar from Phuket to Melbourne and sat next to a drunk man who was double my body size. (he was not drunk when boarding but start to drink the duty free alcohol as soon as the seat belt sign off and snoring the entire flight).

    • +11

where do you source information about the quality of passengers and crews/pilots? Link?

        • +24

So by “common sense” you mean racist stereotypes?

            • +9

@TanedaR: You didn’t say anything about low prices in your previous response. You said people can tell the bad flights from “experience”, “news” and “common sense”. Didn’t mention cost anywhere

                • +6

                  @TanedaR: Sure I don’t think you’re fooling anyone

                  • -5

@illusion99: My other comment regarding Jetstar and virgin flights to Japan has also implied my point.

            • +7

@TanedaR: Disagree on that part. Low priced air ticket attract low quality passengers

You are indirectly saying all bargain hunters here on Ozbargain are low quality citizens and not professionals if we pay and go with China Southern

Also our flights here are really overpriced due to lack of competition. This should be the norm overseas but you see it as low price. Says thanks to Qantas and Government aiding that not giving more airlines to fly here

              • -3

                @neonlight:

You are indirectly saying all bargain hunters here on Ozbargain are low quality citizens and not professionals if we pay and go with China Southern

                Disagree.

Most people don't even know OZB. Among those who know, probably less than 10% of them visit the site frequently.
Niche market cannot represents the whole picture.

International air ticket is an luxury product. Which amplify my point of low air ticket price attracts low quality passengers.
Low quality passengers often cannot afford premium price, and high quality passengers are often more loyal with a brand and less price sensitive.
This is different from a 50 cents Big Mac deal where almost everyone is happy to take advantage of.

            • +1

@TanedaR: "quality of human" around you… r we herding cattles or trafficing humans….

          • @illusion99: agreed. you can never generalise

        • +3

So what airlines are you not flying?

          • @TightAl: Own charter flight and browsing ozb from the premium lounge.. mingling with uncle rich of Qantas..

    • What’s best quality of passengers lol but china southern is always packed due to low price. If you are rich buy its business class or other airlines or your own jet

      • if u own your own jet then I don't know why you would waste time doing ozb.

        • Gotta minmax every cent so you can invest them

    • +1

'not going through every seats from front to end to check whether all passengers are evacuated.'

Do you happen to be one of those mischievous individuals who enjoys sneaking in for a second ride, much like what some do at the cinemas?

      • -2

According to Japanese news I read, the pilot of JL516 checked every seats from front to end after he saw everyone evacuated.

And he still found a few left behind in their seats.
I don't know the exact reason why they were still there, perhaps language barriers, or not feeling well or low visibility due to smoke.

        • +1

And that bothers you why. Are you searching far and wide to justify your beliefs?

        • -2

Those stragglers you speak of were gaming on their new 512gb OLED steam decks purchased from Sapporo. Hope they took their decks with them during the evac…

    • +12

This is an unpopular but valid opinion. As some one who travels a lot, and was on 4 china southern flights 2 weeks ago, The plane, food and flights were great, but the clientele on the flight spoiled it with pushing, reclining of chairs as soon as they sit down, standing up 1 second after the plane lands and general lack of commonsense…. it is all true. That said id still fly with them as the service was great. you just cant pick the clientele.

Im sure i'll be negged in to oblivion for telling it how it was.

      • -7

Thanks. This is something only frequent traveler would notice.
I knew my comment would attract neg votes, as I knew most people are either part of them, or too arrogant to face the truth.

I travel a lot, both pre- and post-covid, and I have noticed the travel experience have get worse significantly.
I stop traveling in Economy class completely post covid.
While it was relatively easy to find a 66%-75% full flight pre-covid, it is always 100% full nowadays, regardless of off-peak or not.
Service standard has also dropped, perhaps because of the lack of manpower, or because the flight is 100% full, or all the cost cutting measures
Which makes an EY class journey very uncomfortable for all reasons, as well as safety concerns that I mentioned.

The only solution is to pay more and avoid the crowd.
From my experience, depends on airline of course, even when EY class is 100% full, PEY class can still be 50%-66% full, which I often get an empty seat next to me.
I get better service, more space, more educated passengers around me, better sleep, less disruption, and most importantly, less safety risk.
J class would even be sweeter for a long haul flight to EU, or on a day when I want to reward myself.

The premium price definitely worth it.

      • +1

no elderly yelling into their phone upon landing?

      • True. Can't pick the passenger. They will do the same if they fly other premium airlines.

    • +1

      Hello Qantas rep

    • If you fly business class, then you don't need to worry about rowdy humans.
If you fly first class, all you have to is to select the "safe" airlines.
If you fly your private jet, who cares!

  • +1

Would 1.5h between international flights be cutting it fine?

    • +1

If it's one ticket like these deals, if you do miss the connection, you should be able to put on the next flight. Might be good to preselect a wider gap, but at least having a one airline booking, you should be covered if delayed and miss flight.

I so often see people waiting at exits after flight to assist connecting travellers.

    • Depends but I'd rather not have the stress - if you are going throught the same airline and checked in all the way through should get some assistance from staff.

I recently did Melbourne-Cairns-Tokyo. Getting through Cairns took forever. Even though I was on the same airline you had to collect your own luggage from domestic and go from domestic to international yourself (why Virgin can't take your bags across I have no idea) . Then the international security took forever because rain had knocked out all of the xray machines except one. We had a three hour gap and only just made the flight. If you're only going with carry on that would be better.
