B&J ice cream is $14.50 regular price now? Fkn hell

    • +3

Yeah its crazy, prices for most items up by at least 20% compared to just late last year, all the increases done quietly.

    • +2

It was $14.25 before that I believe. (profanity) me if you want me to spend nearly $15 on less than 500ml of premium flavour ice cream.

      • +1

Nah, clicking on the product link shows it has been that price since at least June last year. Before that it was $13 in 2022 and $12 in 2021.

      • -2

A bunch of B&J tubs were discounted down to $2 at our local spudshed recently. $2 is about what they're worth if you ask me.

    • +2

It's just Colesworths doing their dodgy marketing.. They jack up a product for a week or two, so that later they can say.. "Supersale.. 1/2 price this week only!"
They have been doing it for years..

Saying that, grocery prices are just stupid lately..

      • God they are such pricks. Remember: if you see someone pinching at Colesworths: no you didn't.

        • +1

And those barbarous gates. Already walked into one once (set off the alarm) because the greedy pigs didn't advertise the fact that there are gates are knee height to get out, and been blocked once, having to wait for the attendant to let me out after paying.
I'm not anti-business, but I'm all for people vandalising these things to the point the supermarkets take them out.

        • Its not Coles and WW that put prices up, its the manufacturers/suppliers. In saying that, they have to submit detailed information to supermarkets to justify the price increase. Its a complex process and takes up to 3 months.

          • +1

@Omarko: I call BS.. if that was the case the homebrand stuff would not be getting jacked up as well. There has been heaps of news articles about primary producers getting paid a pittance for their beef/veggies but the supermarket still charging the consumer big $$$

            • +2

@OzViper: Homebrand stuff gets manufactured by the same businesses that make the branded stuff… I hate Colesworth as much as anyone but the increases are coming from manufacturers / suppliers having to pay more for everything like we all are (only trick here being they aren't putting the prices back down if they suddenly get relief on something like meat prices). But then anytime there's a price rise Colesworth make sure they extract extra margin on top of it for themselves.

              • +2

                @milkabuck: Exactly what milkabuck said.

Private label is manufactured by same/local suppliers who have to manage costs as well.

I’ve been in this game for over 20 years so speaking from experience.

Many suppliers faced genuine cost increases past few years so had to pass these on. Unfortuantely if costs go down, prices dont but it allows the business to reinvest. Of course depends on the business.

Reality also is that coles and ww make +40% margins vs many suppliers struggle to make single digit. Thats the nature of duopoly market unfortunately.

                • +1

@Omarko: What @Omarko said 100%. The market power of the duopoly is what controls prices more than anything in Australia. They're an unofficial / silent price fixing cartel because they refuse to accept the other one being either cheaper / more expensive on products they both range.

                • @Omarko: Surely, Colesworth don't make 40% margin. What you mean is they get 40% of the gross profit margin?

                  • @rokufan: @rokufan its probably just terminology how you interpret profit margin. But yes, on lets say $10 shelf price item Coles would make a gross profit of $3.63 and the supplier would be invoicing them $5.46 per item. So Coles make 40% margin if you calculate it off the $10 price minus GST.

Also, not a lot of people realise that suppliers also fund the specials. if something is on 30% off, the supplier actually pays the discount , eg $10 down to $7 , the supplier has to pay the $3 discount to WW so their margins are covered. In some cases its co-funded but still, the supplier pays majority of the discount so they have to sacrifice their profit but Coles and WW profit is protected.

                    • @Omarko: That 40% margin, is likely on items like fresh produce that has a limited shelf life and risk of damage.

The margin whatever it is also has to pay for, head office costs, staffing in the stores, transport costs, electricity costs, theft etc.

Coles had 40.5 billion in revenue last financial year, but profit of 1.09 billion, that something like 2.8%.

To put it in perspective WW profit 1.72Billion across 1400 stores (AUS/NZ) includes bigw. Thats 1720000000 / 1400 / 365 = $3366.00 approx profit per store per day assuming stores open 365 days reality is most are open 362 i think (closed Christmas, Easter Friday and Anzac).

The government loves blaming the Coles/Woolies cause it diverts attention away from their performance that likely caused the inflation.

                      • @tomfool: The margins vary depending on the segment, eg health and beauty some products are as high as 50-55%.

They make lot more money than they report but they reinvest it as otherwise they would have to pay tax. Yes, they have expenses , just like all suppliers and the reinvestments are into making their stores better, investing into future networks and projects etc etc which is good for everyone.

      • That’s illegal so if you have actual proof please submit to ACCC and they will get a massive fine. The rule is that a product must have been sold at normal rrp price for at least the prior 4 weeks before they can advertise a “sale”. Otherwise they can still reduce the price but it’s not a “sale”

  • Re: the Apple Cards, do the rewards points apply instantly or do they take a few days? If instantly, is the rewards credit able to be used to purchase additional gift cards? This would help get a more “instant” discount

    • -1

You can't use rewards credit to purchase additional gift cards however you can buy Shopback Supermarket giftcards at 2.5% cashback to purchase the Apple gift cards. I believe they can take up to a week for the reward points to reach your account.

      • Last time I did it the points were in my account within 24 hours. If I remember correctly, it even told me on the receipt.

        • I might be wrong. Whatever it is, you can't use the points to purchase gift cards. It is a discount in the way where you get money off your groceries. I would much rather have an instant discount like 10% and not some points BS.

      • I don’t think you can use Woolies gift cards to purchase Apple gift cards.

The staff member unsuccessfully tried for me last time there was a 20x offer (I get discounted access to Woolies gift cards through work and tried to use them, and I suspect ShopBack would be the same deal).

        • +2

Not Woolies giftcards via Shopback. They are called Shopback Supermarket giftcards. They aren't limited to anything. I've used them to buy giftcard's before. They work like the prepaid cards at grocery stores.

          • @NotReallyaMoneySaver: Well that’s something I didn’t know!

            Thanks for the lesson :-)

          • +1

            @NotReallyaMoneySaver:

They are called Shopback Supermarket giftcards. They aren't limited to anything.

Someone reported a number of months ago that when they tried to use a Shopback Supermarket Visa gift card to pay for a Perfect eftpos gift card at Woolworths, the Woolworths checkout returned an Items Not Allowed error (likely because Shopback Supermarket Visa gift cards are really just re-badged Activ Visa gift cards, and Woolworths blocked customers from using "regular" Activ Visa gift cards to purchase some gift cards sold at Woolworths in late 2022).

To me, that sounds like Woolworths has some limits on how you can use Shopback Supermarket Visa gift cards in their stores.

            • @WookieMonster: Weird! I have had opposite results. I asked once in the forums 3 or 4 months ago, and you responded that there has been mixed results, it was a bit of a gamble. I bit the bullet and bought the Shopback Supermarket Giftcard and I managed to pay for the Ultimate Him Giftcards at Woolworths.

    • Edit: thanks for all the responses below.

One follow up - can Apple gift cards be used on the AOC store to take advantage of the discount there also?

      • Yes. You can also use your Apple Account Balance.

    • You can’t - I’ve tried. I had $250 off my next shop but the lady said the system doesn’t let you apply that to a gift card purchase

Combining Apple gift cards and ice cream into one deal will make the comments confusing.

  • +2

But it will make the comments tastier.

  • +1

If you spend say $400 on gift cards that's 8000 rewards points, which is equivalent to $40.
OP has calculated $20 on $400 spend.
    Have I got it wrong?

    • There is no dollar sign in front of 400. That is saying how many points you'll get. $20 = 400 points.

      • That makes sense now.
        Thanks mate.

  • If officeworks/jb hifi have the ipad 9th for $447. Will apple price match?

    • +1

Apple only price matches up to 10% off.

      • -2

so they will match the price and give additional 10% off?

        • +3

          No.

The previous commenter is trying to say that if an Apple product is sold at a lower price at an authorised Apple reseller, Apple may agree to lower their own price just for you, but the maximum discount you can get is 10% off.

For example, Apple sells the iPad 9th Gen 64GB Wi-Fi for $549, but Officeworks is currently selling the same model for $447. If you ask Apple to price match Officeworks, they will actually only lower their own price by 10% (i.e. the lowest price they will sell that iPad to you is $494.10). Apple will not sell you that iPad at $447.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Can I use Apple gift cards to pay for my monthly storage + Apple TV+?

    • +1

Yes. Apple will charge any gift card balance on your account before charging the linked credit card.

  • Anyone aware if the same rules apply as last time about the variable load GCs >$1000 per day?

    • fwiw i was rejected today in store for variable load >1k by manager saying that in Dec the system was updated to not physically allow them to scan more then 1k on a single transaction. I needed 1.6k so I just got 8 x 200 and it was fine for me in multiple transactions and apple store takes up to 8 gift cards.

      • hhmmm thats annoying, i need 3k.
Thanks for the heads up, guess i'll try my luck and go from there.

I also spoke to everyday rewards support and they said there wasn't a daily limit of $$ amount, other than the 10 GCs per day as per the T&Cs.

        • +1

The fixed value and variable load card limits are separate so you could buy 2x $500 variable cards in one transaction and then buy 10x $200 fixed cards in as many transactions as you need all in the same day.

      • Can we use more than 8 giftcards to buy education pricing at a physical apple store? the online purchase only lets me enter 8 giftcards. thanks

        • You can redeem giftcards to your account balance first then buy.

  • thank you for sharing. Can we use more than 8 giftcards to buy education pricing at a physical apple store? the online purchase only lets me enter 8 giftcards.
Also, is 10% rewards applied for these giftcards? Thanks

    • You add the gift card balance to your Apple account, and then when you purchase your item you use your Apple account balance to pay for the item.

      • thanks for sharing.

  • Are you able to use your Apple pay balance to physically purchase Apple gift cards at Woolworths?

  • Re Apple GC: Would you get the EDR points straight away to your Rewards app?

    • +2

For anyone else wondering - Just bought some Apple GC and points came through instantly and got converted to Qantas points instantly too.

  • Did anyone tried paying through shopback grocery GC?

    • +1

Can confirm I just used 2 of the shop back gift cards using my Google Wallet for variable and fixed size apple gift cards totalling $400. (Did a test $100 first then $300 variable)

    • +1

Can also confirm worked for me $200 card @ self checkout using Apple Pay.

  • +2

Warning, I bought 5 x $500 gift cards today and one of them was tampered (had a different code inside that was swapped out with the original). Had to email Woolies support, lets see how long it takes to get my refund…

    • I was wondering if people were still experiencing gift cards that have been tampered with. Sorry this has happened to you. I’m so cautious now that I open the gift card in front of the cashier every time to ensure it’s not a tampered gift card.

    • No cards on the shelf at my local Woolies (Camberwell). They said they've had too may tampered with.

  • I waa going to buy 2 $500 (where you choose the value) cards but a staff member showed the details in catalog that these are not included in this promotion. So i needed to go to another Woolworths to find $200 cards.

  • Can you use the one off monthly discount from everyday mobile or everyday extra to get 10% on Apple gift cards?

    • I just tried and it only takes 10% from your groceries not the gift card

      • Shame. Wouldve been nice! Thank you.

  • Is there a way to use this to pay for utilities?

  • I bought $50 apple gift card this morning and the code is not valid already when I tried to redeem.
Apple support said the code was redeemed few days ago even though it was activated today…still trying to resolve the issue now

Warning/beware that you might have the same issue, I would suggest not to buy apple gift cards from woolies for now

      • yep they match.
the apple support said that they have been getting similar calls from those who bought at woolies.
now I have to wait for up to 72 hours :(

  • Is this still valid on the 16th? ie 23:59:59 or has the new week started?

    • Yes just used it and got my full points instantly

  • With this deal expired, what's the next best deal available to purchase apple gift cards?
Looking to buy Apple iPad 10th gen from apple that has bonus $120 making it $579
