  • Would the Pixel 7 Pro be better this for the same price?

    • +17

I tossed up between the two, and the I just got the Thinkphone. It's durability, better battery life and processor, and storage size swayed me. The Pixel 7 Pro definately has better camera though if you're into that. Hopefully you get something saucy either way!

      • Before the Android 14 update my Pixel 7 Pro was a hot piece of fudge brownie. After that it became much better.

Some bugs in the Pixel take longer than others to fix. But you always get the latest updates with google if that helps.

    • +4

I'd expect the Pixel 7 Pro to be discounted more than this at some point.

Which you choose depends on what you value in a phone. Although Motorola's track record for updates is subpar to say the least.

    • Wasnt the Pixel 7 Pro using Tensor G2 which has bad performance and overheat easily? Unless you value the camera really high, i wouldnt go for Pixel tbh.

      • -1

I think that was the gen prior so it was the Pixel 6 range

      • I used the Pixel 7 for a few months and it was alright. Battery life was indeed quite short though but no overheating issue back then. Also probably gonna get Android 15 at least so there's that as well.

      • I have the P7P. Absolutely no issues with overheating and performance is great. I would highly recommend, especially at the price you can probably get it for now.

You are seemingly telling people to avoid without any personal experience of using the phone?

    • I got the P7P for $869 about 6 months ago and am very happy with it. Great camera is well documented (I now get asked by my iphone owning family members to take photos for them) but also does everything else very well. Battery life is fine. Some phones may have longer, but it gets through a day no problem.

To me there wouldn't be much if any noticeable difference between the top phones in terms of speed, responsiveness etc. Even my previous sub $400 Redmi was fine with that stuff and also had very good battery life. Camera if important to you would be one of the biggest areas where there may be a difference and the P7P excels there.

  • Hey thats a Lenovo term! Is Moto building this thing to the same standards that lenovo do?

    • +11

      Moto is owned by Lenovo

    • +1

It's a Lenovo term because Motorola is owned by Lenovo when they bought the brand name out years ago. This is their mobile device division which includes smartphones. It's called Motorola Mobility LLC. So yeah it's basically manufactured by Lenovo because Lenovo is the parent company.

$800 for an sd8 gen 1…not overly sure if its a deal myself

    • +1

Well, considering that Officeworks wants $997 for it. It kind of is a deal.

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-t…

      • Officeworks has now dropped their price to $799 too so it looks like they price matched. So that is an alternative if JB sells out.

    • +3

This is a 8+ Gen 1. fab by TSMC, fixed all the issues of the 8 Gen 1 fabricated by Samsung.

  • +2

The motorola 30 Ultra can be found usually for same or better price and is IMHO a much better phone

  • +3

I have a Moto Edge Fusion 20 and paid like 300 for it.
I can't imagine spending anymore than this when I get 3 days battery off it. Might not have a great camera but it does everything else well without having fear of battery woes.
I get why people want a flagship phone, but when my S20FE shat itself, it felt the floor really hard after I introduced it to it.
If I were in the market now, Pixel 7 or 30 Ultra would be best bet.

    • You can't seem to get the Edge 30 Ultra any more. Sold out every where. I guess it was a damn good phone to buy.

    • +1

3 days battery on an edge 20 fusion? Cool. My 77 year old father only gets a bit more than a day.

Not exactly a power user, so this phone was never aimed at users like you.

    • +1

Moto Edge 20 Fusion user here, can vouch for the integrity of this phone, I have dropped it from a ladder and it's come off of a bonnet coasting down the road and still works fine. Only downside is the screen is crap in direct sunlight and the phone gets hot with too much use but that has always been an android thing in my experience.

Warning. Moto are terrible at upgrades. They've also broken promises on upgrades for certain models. I like Moto. I even did an internship with them back in my teens. But if you care about software upgrades, don't bother with Moto.

    Lenovo's PCs though… I don't buy any other brand.

    • In still waiting for my security update for my Samsung S9 tab from last quarter last year. Moto aren't the only ones.

      • +1

Samsung only do quarterly updates on their tablets unlike their phones which get monthly security updates.

    • Same here. Moto Edge 40 Neo here and the ROM optimisation is rubbish. Can't keep up constant 120fps and just bugs everywhere with Bluetooth, chrome, YouTube etc.

Had seen the same issues when I first got my Poco F3 but those were sorted out with firmware updates in the first few months.

Wouldn't buy a Motorola again unless they can pull their fingers out and do a better job.

After their Australian version phones had a design fault that meant they couldn't access data roaming overseas, I gave up. Unfortunately I went to pixel phones (7 pro and now 8) which have both been very disappointing. Miss Motorola but their response to several models of phones simply not working overseas was abysmal.

        • Jesus that's bad so it didn't even work. What a joke! Every phone I've had import or Australia, always worked overseas

        • +1

which have both been very disappointing.

          how come?

      • +1

Yep. Specs aren't everything when half don't work correctly because the software is jank.

And the update policy for some of these brands are beyond atrocious.

      • +1

I got burned a couple of times. Can't remember which models, but the first one was one with a trackpad. Loved it. Bought it because they promised one Android version upgrade. Never got it. Second time was maybe 2 phones later. Again, can't remember the model, but I didn't get any updates at all.

People buy their phones for specs they get for the price. That's all well and good, but I hold software upgrades higher than the hardware I pay for.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.

        • +7

I think you misunderstand the saying

          • @bejahi: Possibly. In what scenario could that be used?

EDIT: Oh! Hahaha! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

    • +1

Agree, not just with upgrades, but also security updates too. So if this is important to you, stay right away.

    • At this price I would expect regular security updates for at least four years. Do Motorola offer that? With their budget phones the support is pretty poor but that is more forgiving but once you are in this price range support should be way better.

  • ah ffs
i just bought (on boxing day) this at $850 from jb price match after getting an offer of $800 from lenovo themselves.

i got this to replace my zenfine 8 which bricked itself (and I'm waiting for asus to inspect it so jb can give me an acl refund)

    Poco F6 coming out soon.

  • +1

Crazy specs for the price! Potentially except for the camera, this is almost flagship level. Wonder where they may have cut corners.

  • +1

Just bought the Moto Edge 30 Fusion Dual Sim for $449 from JB Sales and could not be happier!.

  • I'd be all over this but only 2 years of updates.. not worth it.

  • No esim?

  • +2

    Was looking at this
I ended up trading in s21 with s23+ and paid $450 on top with Samsung including like 3 voucher codes

    • Would totally do that with my s21 if i ever actually got emails/codes from samsung; its like I don't exist on their database.

  • $799 at Officeworks too. But it seems to be online order only. You can select free in store C&C and they ship it to the store for free for the customer to pick up.

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/motorola-t…

    • officeworks have free delivery over $55

      • I live in regional QLD and i've never been offered free delivery on any amount. It must be a metro city thing.

Any way it appears that Officeworks has sold out. The warehouse mustn't have any stock left.
