I don't think you even have to download, just click and cancel the DL and the counter goes up so hit it a few times, it's for a damn good cause.

    • You don't even have to click cancel. Just keep clicking on the download link very fast and the counter just keeps increasing.

  • +1

When I posted this deal I think the total was at $248. Now it says $350. Looks like the ozbargain community are performing their good deed for the day and getting behind a worthwhile cause.

    • $21,314 Thank you for posting this :)

  • -2

    Is it tax deductible?

    • +1

Warner music Australia make the donation on your behalf when you download the songs, which are free to download. I think a donation needs to be $2 or more before it can become tax deductible. Not sure.

    • It's not you providing the donation, it's Warner Music. So if anybody gets the tax deduction, it's them.

    • YES… for Warner'

  • Is there a way to stop the browser from downloading? I'd love to spam click the countrer but its using up my bandwidth (even if i can the download its still using up a bit).

  • +6

Just donated $50 lol. For those with iPhones, just click download, it won't download, but it still counts.

    • +6

You donated $50 yourself, or you clicked 50 times and are claiming Warner Bro's donation is your donation?

  • Up to $605 now after unity1's post 18 mins ago. GET ON IT OZB!!!

  • $700+

    • +2

      You're doing it wrong!

  • Done my bit!
Press "download all" couple times and saw the effect …x7
    Now $1K3+

  • +4

If you add "#display_fund_and_download_album('')" without the " to the end of the URL it will add one to the count but wont start the download :) Then all you need to do is keep pressing F5 without having to cancel the downloads it starts.

      • +1

not sure if it will work with %28%27%27%29 at the end instead of ('') but that might be something this website changed. other then that it should do the job. I also installed an auto refresh add on for chrome called 'Easy Auto Refresh' which has the webpage auto refreshing in a tab in the background every second :)

        • Can you type the whole link please so we can give this a try. Thanks.

        • +7

        • thanks

        • awesome.

        • Didn't expect it to let me post a link because I only joined half an hour ago :)

        • My page is refreshing every second but the counter is not increasing accordingly.

        • while using rowanmc's link get the auto refresh addon and just let it refresh by itself!

        • I think this link doesnt actually work. at first i though it worked cos it was going up but sometimes did counter didnt go up, so i think the times it was actually going up was due to other people…

  • $2K+ now :)

  • +1

Cannot resist breasts……cancer research. Nice one OP, clicked about 50 times :)

  • I think i have singlehandedly taken the figure from $2300 to $ 2500, just click and wait about 3 seconds and click again using iPad, not downloads necessary……i dont mind doing this for a good cause.

    • +1

I've been helping with a hit every second :)

  • Great post, hopefully everyone on here can do a bit to help boost this number.

  • +1

  • Wow, I wonder what the upper limit is!

  • looks like they blocked the page from my ip address

  • I wonder if they will honour this…

  • Will they really donate that much? The guy above me did 5k alone, yet the counter on the main site is $5,300

    • +2

Before they start company's will generally set a pre determined limit to stop it going out of control.

And no single person has done 5k, lots of people have been clicking. Great group effort ozbargain.

  • Easily the best deal on OzBargain since the $9 printer

    • +2

  • Hit the $6,000 mark!

  • I Dont know much about DDOS'ing, but i wonder if someone could use a similar technique on this.

  • oh darn, only 128 kbps. But then again, for a good cause so not complaining.

    • But you did.

  • That was an agreeable five minutes of clicking.

  • +1

    LOL LETS GET THIS OZBARGAINED!

  • the lisa mitchell song isn't bad

  • +14

People are going to abuse this with auto refresh spamming and ddosing? A company does a good gesture, and people are working on exploits which could result in them cancelling the entire thing altogether and no money going to cancer research at all?

My neg isn't for the deal, it's there as a warning not to follow the suggestions in this thread.

    • +2

Point taken but I'm not sure that's the case. If you look on their page they have a link to facebook, twitter and youtube. This is open to the whole world, people from other countries could get onboard, and if that happened then the numbers could multiply and go viral.

EDIT: For the record I did not neg your comment.

    • +7

I don't think they would have any legal grounds to cancel this even if they wanted to. There doesn't appear to be any conditions of the download (i.e. maximum of one download per person).

Keep in mind they would have known people would click multiple times. The more clicks they get, the better for them! Look at all the advertising on the web page, if they get 10,000, or 50,000 clicks, the advertisers are probably willing to pay that website more for the advertising space.

I hardly think you could say this is being 'exploited' by OzBargain.

      • +3

You think they're legally bound to provide a donation to charity in return for giving something away for free? I think you'll find they're pretty much entitled to do whatever they want in this scenario.

        • +1

          Heinz dilemma

        • All I'm saying is that it would be highly contentious if they withdrew the donation because;

          1. It's reasonable to assume that people would click multiple times.
          2. People have clicked the website and subsequently the website 'bodyandsoul' have gained web traffic and have benefited from it through advertising.

One could argue that each person who has clicked the website has donated (albeit a small) portion of their time and bandwidth. This would be problematic because if they did not uphold their 'end of the deal' by donating $1 per download, they will have broken the 'contract' as such, and all of those people wasted their time and bandwidth.

I'm not saying this to make it 'okay' to abuse the lack of terms and conditions, I'm just saying that it is unreasonable to assume that they could so easily take it away.

      • +7

I don't think they would have any legal grounds to cancel this even if they wanted to. There doesn't appear to be any conditions of the download (i.e. maximum of one download per person).

I think the general rule of social cohesion of "Don't be a dick" applies here.

    • -3

Yeah totally agree Modokun, pretty childish behavior - the BARGAIN here should be to go grab your free download, but to then move on.

    • Usual process in product promotion linked to pay out to charity (eg 1c from every purchase of .. goes to ..) is to set a total payout amount upfront. No sane company manager signs off on a blank cheque. But the punters don't know that, so buy that company's product in preference to their usual.

So all this effort may be in vain. No matter what we do, the donation has been already organised ages ago.
(But the number of 'downloads' may be limited, so others who want the music may miss out.)

[Even though I understand the corporate tactics, I still picked up a 'Pink' ME Bank Debit card ("1c to Breast Cancer Research from every purchase") - $10 extra fee waived until end of October & I get $50 back for using it 3 times. At least it feels good - and may impress the ladies ;) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81565 ]

    • lol @ the ddos comments

    • +3

That's a pretty pathetic neg, then. The OP posted the deal as "FREE Songs Download and $1 Will Be Donated to The National Breast Cancer Foundation", not "SPAM this link and give a thousand bucks to breast cancer". If you don't like the suggestions in the thread, neg the comments with the suggestions. It's an extremely generous offer from Warner and people shouldn't be abusing it, but you have no reason to have negged the deal itself.

      • I put the neg because everyone seemed to be trying to find a way to generate millions and I wanted to bring up that that could backfire spectacularly. I will often jump straight to a neg when there are a lot of positives to see the reason why it has been made.

I'm not phased if a mod removes the neg if they find it inappropriate, but hey, it started conversation over the issue of abusing it so I personally don't regret placing it.

  • 7K now. Lets see if I can bring it up to 20K.

    • +14

They seem to have hard-coded an upper limit of 60000.

Look at the Javascript function display_fund_and_download_track(track_id,download_url)

There is a conditional statement there that checks whether the value of the "fund" variable is >= 60000. If yes, then window.location='tracks/stopdownloadingtracks?id='+trackid

If this is indeed the case, I'd say we hold off for a little bit and let legit users download the music. If towards the end of the fund-raiser it falls short of 60K that would be a different story.

      • +4

Well there you go, there is a maximum. So no need for people to fuss about the donation not being upheld. I wonder if there is a time limit to get to the 60,000?

        • +5

Not as far as I can see. It would be quite easy to hit 60,000 with a quick python script or using a security testing fuzzer/repeater like Burp's intruder or repeater (if following redirects).

That said, not keen to accidentally DDoS the website or deprieve valid users the chance to listen/download music (also the legal ramifications ;) ).

        • Maybe we can stop at $10,000 and say we have done our part, then let the rest of the community do their good deed

      • +1

I see I wasn't the only one snooping around >_>

        Bash:
        for i in {0..10}
            do
                curl http://nbcf.stageinkatana.com/tracks/stopdownloadingalbum
                sleep 0.5
            done

  • +1

$7500! good stuff team! lets keep this going. we all benefit a lot from this site, so its great that we're able to give back a little something.

    • Except it means people who really wanted to download the music miss out - it is the number of music downloads that are limited - the rest is spin!
The actual payout to the charity would have been agreed on ages ago.
And the promotion (future sales) the company expected is diminished, so they & others are less likely to participate / donate in the future.
Linking feeling good to the product is a common promotional strategy during the 'Pink' time of the year.

  • +1

    8000 now

  • +7

    It's over 9000!!!!!!!

  • +2

    $10,000!

  • Interesting, all you have to do is click download. You don't even have to download the songs. Downloaded them anyway just in case. Good way to give back.

    • +1

      lol

    • First i've heard of it.

    • +1

haven't we already established that the number of clicks allowed is finite? Why rob others of the opportunity to get new music and do their good deed of the day?

    • +1

Only do it at the end of the campaign to reach the 60k.

  • +1

Doesn't anyone think that while the donation amount is capped that the music downloads will be unlimited for the duration of the offer?

    • Not as far as I can see. The number of "downloads" (i.e. equal to the fund amount) is capped at 60K and is hardcoded in the application logic.

  • Donated $100 :D

    • +2

You donated $100? Or Warner Bro's is donating $100 for you clicking a link 100 times and you donated $0?

      • +2

He did. Without him that $100 donation would not have occurred.

        • +1

Nope he has not donated anything, Warner Bro's will donate cash to a charity as a result of his participation in this offer. You cannot claim someone elses donation as your own for doing nothing. Can the OP walk around claiming that he donated $20,000 to charity because he listed the deal here? Great logic, well done.

        • +2

The OP can claim that but he'd be incorrect. :P

        • +4

Can the OP walk around claiming that he donated $20,000 to charity because he listed the deal here?

          I would.

  • +1

12 grand who thinks they can get 20 grand by the end of the day.

    • +1

I could but now that I know there is a limit of 60,000 I will hold off until closer to the end.. if anyone can find a end date

  • +9

Typical ozbargainers, only donating if they're using other people's money.

    • -3

      Yeah haha

I'm from England - been out here since mid-2011 and when I heard that donations are tax-deductible. I just didin't understand the point…and to what extent? Donating money to politicians? Giving your kids a tax-free gift and claiming it back…?

      Crazy.

      • -1

Seems you don't bother to understand. You travel to ridicule your hosts?
The Tax Dept has deemed your kids to be a Registered Charity??

Its similar to 'Gift Aid' in the UK. I was always being approached to use that system there.
"This allows charities to claim back your tax from the Inland Revenue on both one-off and regular donations. There's no minimum contribution so even on the smallest donations the tax is reclaimable." That way you make a smaller contribution, but your Government kicks in the Tax you would normally pay earning the gift. http://www.wikihow.com/Claim-UK-Tax-Benefits-on-Charitable-D…. I take it you knew about your own Tax system & charitable contributions provisions before criticising ours?? I did.

The end result is basically the same. In the Australian system - you make a contribution, & claim back the tax you would pay on earning the contribution. In the UK, you give a smaller gift, and the tax you would pay to have that earnings in your pocket is given to the charity - if you sign up to Gift Aid for that charity. Same amount out of your pocket at the end of the tax year, & same end result for the charity. It is approached in a slightly different angle - basically post or pre tax contributions. But the system here is simpler - you do not have to sign a form for each charity to claim the tax you have paid to earn those gifts, you just reduce your taxable income by your donation (receipts) come tax time.

Only donations to a registered charity (like this cancer research charity) are Tax deductible. http://www.ato.gov.au/nonprofit/content.aspx?doc=/content/85…

ATO: slightly different, "contributions and gifts to political parties and independent candidates and members may be claimed as income tax deductions" - not that I knew that. Its more a business expense or an expense incurred due to work (if you are a property developer, union organiser maybe, etc). http://www.ato.gov.au/nonprofit/content.aspx?doc=/content/61…

Basically, if you contribute $100 to a charity, & you pay say 32.5% marginal tax rate (taxable income of $37,001 - $80,000), you reduce your total taxable income by that $100 contribution, so reducing the tax you pay by $32.50. So you have $67.50 less in your pocket, but did $100 of 'good'. The higher your highest marginal tax rate (45% marginal rate for those over $180,000), the more benefit for being generous. It encourages philanthropy & pays for many services that may otherwise be paid from Tax income anyway.

In this case, the same as in the UK, the company Warner Music Australia, decreases its taxable earnings by the amount of the donation, reducing its tax liability. It could do the same if it spent the money on promotion/advertising, paying the CEO more, or just not making as much profit. Not that I know much about the Tax system in Oz, as I am rarely here.

        • Summary: same as in the UK, the Government does not Tax your income on any money given to an approved charity, etc. You claim back the tax you paid earning the donation amount through the annual tax return.
Reason for Tax deduction: Why should you pay Income Tax on a gift to the community?

If your taxable income is less than $18,201 - there is no tax deduction.
If your taxable income is more than $180,001 - you get 45% of your donation back - the tax paid earning the contribution.
In between, see Tax rates: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?doc=/content/…

(But in the UK you don't get the tax you paid back, it is given to the charity - only if you bother to fill out 'Gift Aid' form for each charity you donate to. If you don't fill out the form, the Government pockets your tax. So you should figure out the total donation including tax, every time you give! Talk about a complex system, which does not encourage philanthropy as much - no lure of a personal tax deduction, & you tend to contribute more than you expected - including tax.)

        • Well, I wasn't criticising the system actually, if you'd care to re-read my post. I stated I was confused by it.

As a side-note, I believe you are a little confused by what Gift Aid in the UK is if you're comparing it to what you have just described.
