NAB Rewards Platinum Credit Card: 80,000 NAB Rewards Points with $1,000 Spend in 60 Days, $45 Annual Fee @ NAB

611

Similar to this popular deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784275 with the following exceptions

  • 80k NAB rewards points vs 120k NAB rewards points
  • converts to Velocity points 40k vs 60k
  • annual fee $45 vs $95
    - not required to auto transfer to velocity points

My maths say (based on AF)
$1 AF -> 1777 vs 1263 NAB rewards points
$1 AF -> 888 vs 631 Velocity points
OR
1 NAB rewards point = $0.0005625 vs $0.0007916
1 Velocity point = $0.001125 vs $0.001583

YMMV - you have to weigh out if getting a hit on your credit score is worth the difference

Points will be awarded on a tiered basis: 80,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in the first 60 days, plus 20,000 bonus points when you keep your card open for over 12 months.

issue with all of these is the min amount you can get is 6k… i see what they are doing

    • +12

The issue I see is that you have to pay the annual fee TWICE to get all the bonus points

      • Good catch!!!

      • +7

Yeah nobody should chase the 2nd part of the bonus points, the undiscounted 2nd annual fee ($195) isn't worth a measly 20k more:

80,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 on everyday purchases in the first 60 days (credited to your points balance within three months of meeting the spend criteria) and 20,000 bonus points after 12 months (credited to your points balance within the 13th month).

  • Can i get this offer if i have clsed NAB rewards card in last 6 months ?

    • Would like to know this too.

    • +7

This bonus points offer is not available to existing customers who have received or are entitled to receive NAB Rewards Bonus Points for a new personal NAB Rewards credit card or NAB Home Loan in the 18 months prior to the opening of a NAB Rewards Signature Card or NAB Rewards Platinum Card.

    • +3

      Nope:

This bonus points offer is not available to existing customers who have received or are entitled to receive NAB Rewards Bonus Points for a new personal NAB Rewards credit card or NAB Home Loan in the 18 months prior to the opening of a NAB Rewards Signature Card or NAB Rewards Platinum Card. Offers are not available when closing or transferring from another NAB credit card account or in conjunction with any other NAB credit card offer.

      EDIT: Beaten by 21 seconds!

      • Does owning the qff nab card, and applying this card, will forfeit the bonus points?

        • Also wondering this, in the last 12mo I have had NAB qantas card and NAB velocity card. Got both of those bonus points, because this is NAB reward points maybe I am also eligible for this?

          • @Brick50: I knew ANZ would have no issue while owning both qff reward and std reward at the same time while receiving both bonuses… But not sure about nab

    • Related, would like to know if this offer is available for those with Citibank credit card (since Citibank AU is with NAB)?

  • So the 81640 points become $400 in Amazon gift vouchers

    • +1

      Don't think so.

$305 of profit after meeting spend requirements
      + $350 Woolworths gift cards
      - $45 annual fee

Check out this site for better profits than this deal.
      https://www.rwrds.com.au/

      • +1

        That's a cool site, thanks.

    • Yep! That’s right. Need to spend extra $640 on top of the min spend requirement to get the 80k points

      • why 640 extra?

        • $100 gift card = 20,410 NAB rewards points

    • It's better than OP deal for sure,

$455 of profit after meeting spend requirements
      + $600 Woolworths gift cards
      - $145 annual fee

      OP deal is $305 profit.

      • +1

3x more spend though so it depends.

        • Fair callout!
I always go for best profit even if extra spend required

          • @cook99: you have to keep your card open for more than 12 months to get the full points which means 2 years of annual fees

      • Sorry mate, where are you seeing the $600 woolies gift cards, that sounds amazing.

    • +3

Depends on your circumstances. I personally prefer smaller spending requirement due to better ROI and also it means I can spend the extra $$ on a different CC promo.

      • +1

Absolutely, everyone different, my spend easily covers the bigger ones so ROI for me is solely Annual Fee divided by Points received (and conversation rate of points)

  • +3

For everyone information, existing NAB customers have another offer for this card. You can see this via the banking portal or in-apps

Total 120,000 bonus NAB Rewards Points

90,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 on everyday purchases within the first 60 days of account opening and 30,000 bonus points when you keep your card for over 12 months. That’s enough for $580 in gift cards.

Reduced annual card fee (from $195 to $95) for the life of the card.

Strange that new customer offer seems better than this one as the annual fee is much lower. Noted that NAB don’t do refund on fee anymore

    • Does holding a NAB credit card in the past 18 months disqualify you for this offer?

      • yes the cool off period still applies

        • It doesn’t say anything for me. Just to meet the minimum spend.

    • +2

Thanks for this but double fee for 10k more is probably not worth it in year 1.

  • Does it come with the free International Travel Insurance ?

    • +2

      Complimentary insurances
Access to complimentary insurances including international travel insurance.View Disclaimer4

      • Thank you :)

  • Dumb question from someone that has never opted for a Credit Card before, does paying a VicRoads yearly rego (via Card Payment) count towards the $1000 minimum or is there some sort of catch (eg. Only applies to in-store purchases, only applies to purchases using Tap & Pay)?

And lastly, if you meet the requirements for the 90 Day spend, get your NAB Rewards Points, Convert them to Cashback or Gift Card(s) and then close the account (with a nil balance, obviously), will that incur any sort of fee or consequence (eg. a massive hit to your Credit Score).

    • +1

It varies between providers, I've had best luck paying these sorts of bills at AusPost using cards

No hidden consequences, your score may take a hit on application, but in all my years churning 5-6 a year, my score has remained Excellent.
The rules changed on scores a few years ago and they are not nearly as punitive any more.

      • +1

Auspost stores in my area refuse to allow people to pay bills with disposable visa Mastercard and eftpos

    • +2

Online purchases count, but often government (and sometimes semi-government) purchases don't.

The hit to your credit score is generally from the credit enquiry when you apply for the card, not when you close it.

      • Is there a way to know if this offer supports government related payments (via Online Card payment, or via Australia Post)?
I assume that clause is deeply hidden in their NAB Product Disclaimer

        • +1

It doesn't, see page 4. Note that they don't define if VicRoads is Government or Semi-Government however.

          • +1

@Sim69: Damn that sucks, paying my rego with it would have got me approx 70% of the way there. Oh well…

Thanks for looking into that Sim69 :)

            • +1

@Empharand: Use Sniip to sort that one out, it's worth the surcharge. Been down that road many times myself with other similar bills

              • @roberto7: Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking into Sniip but I'm still a little confused, is this to get around NAB detecting the money being paid to a 'Government' entity and the payment appears as a 'Sniip' payment instead of 'VicRoads' (or another government entity) in the transactions list with NAB?

Can you please give me a quick run-down of how it would work in my case (Paying a Vicroads rego, to try and get the NAB points)?

                • +1

@Empharand: I'm not an expert on this and haven't the time to research & compile a summary… probably Google is your friend as you get to explore all the angles you need. All the best

                  • @roberto7: All good 😊
I did some further research after my last comment, I think my theory is correct in that you pay Sniip and Sniip deducts the payment from NAB and also pays the bill, whether or not it appears as 'Sniip' on the NAB transaction list I'm not sure.

I reached out to their Customer Service email to see if they accept Car Registration payments, I'll report back once I hear back.

                    • @Empharand: Sniip would pay any billers with either Bpay or BSB&account - with some restrictions to gambling, charitable companies, etc.

                      • @timhn: Yeah I received a reply from Sniip earlier, they do support Registration Payments. I wasn't sure as it wasn't on their list of 'What bills can I pay'

                • @Empharand: Sniip is mainly to allow you to make payments to places that don't accept your card.
The biller needs to give you an invoice with a bsb and account number clearly shown,
Our the biller must support bpay

They charge a % fee per payment so amex that hardly many billers seem to take is what i use sniip for.

Vicroads and my isp do not support bpay nor offer back bsb payments therefore cannot use sniip with those.

Sniip with ato they double the fee because it is classed as business to business transaction

                • +2

@Empharand: You can also use zip.co generate single use card to pay rego , then nab to pay zip repayments

See page 4. I've heard mixed stories though. If you don't want to risk it, buy Coles MC gift card or anything similar to pay your rego.

    • Pay with Zip, pay off zip with Cc

      • I don't know if that would work as I think that's considered a 'Cash Advance'

        cash advances (which include bills paid over the counter at a bank, financial institution or post office, and the purchase of travellers cheques);

        • +1

I also use Zip to pay for rego, sydney water, Council rates and school fees. You then pay Zip with your credit card and earn the points.

  • -1

Still waiting for bonus points from that other deal, been 3 business since hitting min spend days now getting a bit worried…

    • Have all the transactions settled? From memory I got mine within a week

      • I had a transaction for 1200 in 1 go and yeah settled. The standard 1200 has been assigned (and will probably auto convert to velocity)

  • +4

Sorry but I think the other promo with Velocity is still better. Sure you pay $50 extra for AF but the extra 40k NAB rewards points itself worth at least $150 gift card.

not required to auto transfer to velocity points

This isn't true either, they didn't even ask you to provide your Velocity detail during application. In my case, I met the spending requirements within few weeks, got the bonus points and then later they sent me a reminder to provide them with Velocity number. And it's still not compulsory.

    • And it's still not compulsory.

Thanks for the info. Good to know you can save up points for promotion like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/808924

      $50 extra for AF

Yeah, I guess I was comparing

      $49 AF -> 80k NAB rewards points
$50 AF extra -> 40k NAB rewards points (half of the above rewards points, plus $1 extra)

If one is getting his/her credit score hit anyway, maybe it's worth that extra $50?

      • +1

If one is getting his/her credit score hit anyway, maybe it's worth that extra $50?

I would say yes. Given the same spending requirement, that Velocity promo would actually give you more at the end.

    • Yeah, I managed to transfer most of my NAB points (120k) to Flybuys at 1:1, as the deal made it ineligible for the 20% bonus points. Now waiting for Flybuys to announce a Velocity transfer bonus.

The image. I thought it was a micro SD deal.

  • +1

I'd take the mentioned one for the extra $50 AF
    (equivalent to 120,000 points)

    • Can anyone confirm that you definitely aren't eligible for both? I already had that deal

  • Minimum income mentioned anywhere? Any chance of getting approved being a pensioner?

    • Minimum credit limit is $6K so I guess income requirements at least $30K annually.

  • a dumb question: many cards will give additional bonus points if holding the card for 12 months, if doing so how to avoid being charged with full annual fee for the next year?

    • +3

I expect most people chasing points will forgo the incremental bonus when holding for more than 12months, and will instead close the credit card much earlier. The full annual fee is not worth it.

    • +2

Get the bonus points, cancel the card and move on to the next promo. In next ~12 months, you can reapply this similar deal and get much more points than staying with the same card for a mediocre bonus for being loyal.

  • Have a question, does frequently changing credit card affect your credit score? As banka seeing you not profitable?

    • +1

'Changing' credit cards involves triggering credit enquiries which can lower your score, especially if these enquiries are within a short amount of time. You can monitor these fluctuations with companies like Creditsavvy (The score number imo, is not particularly useful).

Being able to make revenue from a customer (whether through annual fee, interchange fees, or other products) might be one part of it, but the bank will also be considering the applicant's overall risk profile.

    • Not in my experience, just ensure you pay it off in full monthly. I churn 3-4 times per year and rate excellent.

    • That's because someon got rejected for home loan because too often changes, thought this might be the case as it reduces the credit score

      • +1

If you are not about to get a home loan in the next 12 months then have nothing to worry. Already on my 7th card right after Xmas last year. My cc score fluctuated between 695-750 and I don't really worry if it going down as long I got my cc approved. No mortgage or any personal loan.

  • Anyone know if you have to link Velocity to get the NAB points? Reached the minimum spend and no points yet.

    • Didn’t you put your Velocity number during the application? Call them up to double check.

Few years back, most Ozbargainers (me included) have to call them to get the Qantas ff number set correctly in cc account. Apparently, during the application process, somehow the Qantas ff number didn’t get saved to the application.

  • Approval was fast, but snail mail for physical card very sluggish!
I loaded the electronic card onto my mobile wallet. Is there any way that I can get the full card details for online purchases before it arrives?

  • Is a person eligible for the NAB rewards CC bonus having held the NAB Qantas Signature card within the past 18 months ??
I know ANZ have separate FF and Rewards cards which don't effect each others eligibility. How about NAB?

  • Westpac deal is better - $0 annual fee if a member (if you held and cancelled a card once upon a time..your login will still work)

  • I notice NAB's policy is now 18months not 12months for previous card holders. IS this the case?
And is this the trend for banks now and trheir new policy. 18months is a long time!

    • I think the rule has been like that since last 2 years.

  • The approval process has gone on for nearly a fortnight. Very odd, might be Ozbargained?

  • +3

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/820345

This deal is back on FYI. 120,000 (60k velocity) for $95. 40k NAB rewards points = $200 (apparently) so it's definitely worth the increased fee.

    • 3k spend over 60 days may be stretch for myself. can you buy online gift cards using paypal to calculate towards 3k. like coles Mastercard deals. etc…

      • -1

Yes you can. As long as the credit card is linked to your PayPal obviously.

  • 80,000 points arrived very quickly, and most of my spend was on deals on gift cards. I will try to accumulate 100,240 points for 2 x $250 Aldi gift cards, as I already buy Colesworth GC's at a discount. Using points for NAB cashback is very unattractive (equates 62,500 for $250 cashback).

    • @Peck, I am thinking of joining them as well. I am on wealth package so will get away with annual fee. where can i check what NAB points worth to how much gift card $$. As like you, i may as well buy ALDI gift cards if turns out better than others.

      • found it. all good

To redeem points login to the NAB account, click on 'Cards' and then click on the picture of your card.
Generally the gift cards are 10210 points for $50, 20410 points for $100, & 51020 points for $250. Most are egift cards. For Aldi they only have $250 GC's and they are 'physical'.
If you already bank with NAB then you don't need to go through the ID hassle like you do when applying for other credit cards.
