They’re like Pokémon, gotta collect them all.

      • +1

gotta "CATCH" them all - that's only if you want to be the very best.. ;)

        • +1

Haha, you can tell I was never a Pokémon fan!

    • pls gimme.

on a serious note how are you finding it?

Fantastic. I have the Mini plus as well. This one does PS1 much better and N64 which the MM+ doesn’t do at all.
I prefer OnionOS on the MM+ but ArkOS on the r36s works well.
I got a USB wifi dongle for the r36s to update it, worked no issues (TP-Link 150Mbps Wireless N Nano USB Adapter (TL-WN725N) AU Version https://amzn.asia/d/6nm4tfB) and a USB-C to usb adapter.

Overall really impressed with the r36s for the price. Only thing to note is the “original” batch can with rumble built in. Mine didn’t not (you can see the rumble motor is missing through the case). Minor issue but if you want rumble then it might be pot luck if you get a model with or without it.

Also note if you don't want to buy a wifi dongle, you don't have to. Just need to grab a cheap USB OTA adapter from places like Kmart and update that way.

        • What are you updating? The firmware? Is there a big advantage to doing so?

  • +2

its more than $58 delivered. theres gst?

    • good point…edited title

      • +1

~$63.80 would be the correct figure

  • Damn, anyone know why the black option isn’t available to be posted to Aus?

    • Usually means OOS if you want black there are other sellers for a few extra $ with it in stock.

      • Thanks. Appreciate it 👍

The performance, screen, and battery life are great.

The stiff buttons and awkward shoulder buttons placement are not.

    • Button feel is extremely important. I'm one of those early adopters of the rp2+, and one of the first batch had stiff buttons due to the paint of the button made it too large for the shell. I sanded the buttons down and it's still too stiff for me, so I eventually played my miyoo mini instead.

    • I find the face buttons and dpad to be great on mine. The shoulders are terrible though

This video was very helpful to me, hopefully helps someone else that buys this:

  • Black sold out.

  • Clone the SD cards as soon as you buy it, as they are cheap junk that will stop working soon.

Cloning is easier said than done however

    • why is cloning easier said than done? is it more than just copy+paste

      • Yeah, its a pain, tho my big tip is to look up instructions for win 32 disk imager and use that to put image on hard drive then put that image onto a second larger sd card…

        • You actually do need to use image tool. As arkos uses a ext4 partition for data you can’t usually see in windows.
I copy paste with the MM+ as OnionOS is all visible in windows.

          • @internet-stranger: Question: I successfully cloned the SD card with the operating system, but when I cloned the game roms card it doesnt startup. Is there any advice for cloning that card?

            • @Enterz: The ROMs card you can just copy paste in windows. It’s only the boot one you need to clone.

              • @internet-stranger: OK thanks will keep plugging away. Am trying to format it properly first

                • @Enterz: Format as exFAT and then copy the files off the old one. You may have to set the option in ArkOS to use second card for ROMs if it turned itself off somehow.

            • @Enterz: Did you go into to settings on the device and select tf2 slot for the roms?

              • @scottySK: Still not working with new sd card. Existing one wrks in that slot though

                • @Enterz: Unfortunately there are a bunch of branded sd cards which do not work in tf2 slot (but strangely work in tf1 slot). Check the discord for details regarding compatibility in the tf2 slot

                  • @scottySK: Weird, still I have them backed up so might continue w existing card until it breaks

                  • @scottySK: Which Discord? I just googled it but cant find it

          • @internet-stranger: Wishing I got the mm+ instead

    • I couldn't find much in terms or cloning if anyone has software to recommend that would be ideal.

Just flash rg351mp image and a latest dtb file. This way you will have A Clean image then you do an online update

  • "dont have one but errbody seems to love these here"

Your life will not be complete without one, I have one of these and 2x SF2000 and love them. Christmas lunch all the adults kept fighting with the kids to play them.

    • I found the SF2000 unusable after using the r36s. But they are half the price.

  • Can you get the CRT-look shaders running on these to give the games a more authentic feel?

    • +1

No, the 3326 doesn't have enough power to runs crt shaders faithfully on all systems. I have RK2020 and this one, both struggles with crt or LCD shaders

      • Thanks for the information, will pass in that case.

  • Does it come with games installed?

    • +4

Please remove this comment. Answering it will get the deal removed off OzBargain.

      …No…

    • -3

      Yes thousands

  • As someone who mods Gameboys, I'ma need one of these. Thank you

  • By a happy coincidence I was looking into these kind of things last night, glad I resisted the urge to buy until today!

Happy to see that it's already left the warehouse and I have a tracking number, so should see it in a couple of weeks all going well!

  • Thanks, have been thinking of getting one of these types of handhelds and at this price couldn't resist.

  • The one thing I do miss is bluetooth. WiFi I can get away with as I have a USB WiFi dongle that works just fine with a USB-A to USB-C converter, but I'd really love to be able to use my bluetooth ear buds. Had to dig up a pair of old wired Samsungs I probably got with a Galaxy 4 or similar vintage :p Debating a Bluetooth transmitter…..

  • Any advantage to this over a homebrewed vita?

    • If you already have a working homebrewed vita, maybe not? But I got one and my gf hasn't put it down for about a week.

      • Honestly, joypads are better on this than the vita, as well as the battery life. Everything else though….well… up to you. This is much easier to get up and gaming and modify.

        • Cheers lads

        • I've got a non-OLED Vita and I like the screen better on the R36S, apart from the fact it is smaller. Vita is definitely better for adult hands however.

I think it boils down to this for me - If you want to play more retro games (a la, no reliance on the triggers/bumpers) get the R36S. The Vita's ergonomics are better, and if you have an OLED Vita, definitely a much better screen there…

For ~$60 this thing I can throw on a bag and basically I couldn't care less if it gets bashed around. I'll also be getting multiples for my younger (4/6 YO) kids instead of giving them an expensive Switch each that could break pretty easily, let alone cost a lot more to get software for - and share games between. (Screw Nintendo for their requirements for Animal Crossing and the like…)

I haven't got Minecraft going on the R36S yet however, which I think will dampen my kids enthusiasm a little. Apparently the port for R36S is using the PSP version running via retroarch (Vanilla Minecraft) - I just have to fiddle with it more.

The Stardew Valley port is excellent, as well as the Sonics/Zelda/Mario 64/TMNT Shredders Revenge/etc which you can play natively on the R36S using the full resolution etc. Very impressive for $60. I played Half Life on it for over an hour the other day which was a laugh - struggle town with the triggers however..

I'd gladly pay another $10 for wifi/bluetooth support.

          • @Thiefsie: Do have oled vita. Guess I’ll stick with that, especially with it able to also play ps1 and vita full performance.

  • status says "Failed to clear at import customs" (AU)

    • i got the same message this morning too

      • mine got delivered yesterday so was only held up a few days … still very quick from AliExp….

    • I got that with a xiaomi shaver

    • It usually clears in 1-2 days

      • 4 days now

        • my carry case got stopped but my device made it through - only took 8 days from china to brisbane. very impressed.
