Personal Finance Tracker Spread Sheet $6 (Was $8) @ CompiledSanity Personal Finance

1061

Budgeting for Stage 3 tax cuts can be difficult – but with a good spreadsheet you too can deliver a generous household surplus! No brackets required.

This formula driven and automated net worth and savings tool has been really popular on OzBargain and reddit, and hopefully you'll enjoy it too! The sheet is made to help track monthly finances and provides a bird's eye view of your financial position each month. For me, I saw that after maximising Boost cashbacks I now have enough to finally pull the trigger on more OXO accessories.

Changes since the last deal – many bug fixes per community requests, improved connectivity with MorningStar/Financial Times live pricing and more to come!

I was speaking to my doc about stage 3, he said it was spreading? I thought the point was to stop the creep, no idea what he was smoking

FAQ #1: Why should I pay money for this?
The sheet is heavily automated, has live pricing and is a one-off payment rather than a subscription. If you're really interested, feel free to join the subreddit where I take future feature suggestions (and have for the past two years) and other users can help you debug and get set up.

FAQ #2: what permissions do I need to give and what information will you get off me?
All information is fully self-contained within and never leaves the sheet. There are 2 versions of the sheet:
    - FULL: Sheet contains the full suite of automated features but requires some more expansive permissions as a result.
    - SLIM: Does not support email updates, calendar reminders or the migration feature but has more self-contained permissions for those privacy conscious.

Wishing you all a happy tax refund and start to the year!

    • Other than using windows or third party software how do I know the document isn't sending information somewhere to a server? This question is more from a paranoid point of view for privacy. Can you turn off external access within an excel sheet?

How simple is this to use on an android tablet with a pen. Any experience?

      • +1

You could use Chrome Dev Tools or Wireshark to see the domains that are being called. That should tell you what seperate requests are being made when you refresh the sheet.

        • +1

Was just liking the effort u put in. And then I saw it's a Google sheet - I'll have to think it over…

          • +1

@cobknob: For sure and that’s understandable. I have this in my FAQ if it helps:

The Sheet has been designed to be completely self-contained. When you download the Sheet and make a copy, it's now its own independent copy hosted by you.

You can review all the formulas to see how that works, but it's strictly a one way fetch process and if you go Tools -> Script Editor in the Document you can review all the code yourself to make sure it checks out. Furthermore, no personally identifying information or sensitive information such as passwords/usernames are needed nor requested.

The only inputs into this Sheet are holdings and amounts, the minimum information needed to determine your net worth & associated performance.

so glad i bought this sheet last time it was posted. money well spent to keep your life in order lol

    • Glad to hear it’s been so useful to you!

    • +6

This one has had years of thought and community involvement put in. Purely based on a hourly rate, I’d say it will save you time :-)

    • +4

You could spend 8 hours making a sheet and not make it half as feature rich as this one.

      • Agreed but sometimes software gets to feature rich and loses its purposes of simplicity

  • A few deals ago you said open banking integration was coming soon so we could pull all our transactions in. Have you incorporated that yet?

    • Working on it, but Basiq and lots of other data brokers do not provide private and self-managed endpoints which I’d like to setup for this sheet. There’s also issues to do with ongoing costs which is difficult for a one-off sheet.

It’s still in my plans but it’s now been absorbed into a larger to overhaul how that part of the sheet would work.

      • What about statements in csv format?

  • Is there a way to separate stocks/ETFS held by person or account?

  • +5

Do yourself a favour, look up Microsoft Money Plus Sunset Deluxe: feature-rich and free forever.

    • +2

Haha, been using MS Money since early 90s, though some of the file can no longer open.

Have tried Quicken before, don't like it.

Such a shame Microsoft discontinued the product.

      • +2

Same here used MS Money for about 30 years switched to Moneydance 18 months ago.

        • +1

Why did you switch? How did that go? 20+ years of data for me, I guess I will die clutching it to my heart…

    • +1

thanks for mentioning this. that seems like discontinued and no longer available for download.

didctgey come up with newer version?

  • …..wait? Its an excel template?

    • It’s a live Google Sheet with extensive scripts to enable live pricing and automation of your finances. You can review prior Ozbargain threads where there are plenty of comments discussing the functionality of it if that helps.

      • so we just save it to our gmail account and just update it from there?
any features later on somehow gets built into it?

        • +1

That’s right! Added features later involve a new sheet version, but there is an included migration tool that will copy all your data across to any new versions.

          • @CSPersonalFinance: Cool, thought it's a one time purchase of a particular version.

So it's actually lifetime update as well?

            • +1

@browser: Yes lifetime updates are included.

    • +8

      Have you no shame?

Hey a dollar is a dollar

      • Gotta support your fellow OzBargainer

  • +4

CS's sheet is insanely worth while. Bought it August-2023 and the visibility its given me on my finances are outstanding. Used to have my own personal tracker but this template blows it out of the water.
Can't recommend it enough especially for a one-off $6 fee.

    • Thanks for the kind words!

  • +2

@CSPersonalFinance you got good excel skill but why don't you make something to compete against navexa portfolio tool (www.navexa.io) ? navexa used to be affordable but they recently jacked up prices way out of what it is worth so good time to get into investment market… you can even look at the app https://stockevents.app/en which is also another reasonable priced portfolio tracker .. !

there will more demand for this one if the prices are compelling and competitive … !

    • +1

In the works, but not something you get to overnight!

      • Hope you get there quicker !

Navexa owner is also developer himself and he started the website as his project as there was no competition in the market to sharesight and even today there is only two provider sharesight & navexa in term of australia focused portfolio tracker & tax reporting.

Obviously, you can start with portfolio tracker only as tax reporting bit complicated and may not be required for those whose tax is auto filled by ATO.

if you are creating something and looking for feedback to improve while you are developing then feel free to talk about it on whirlpool as many finance discussion happens over there !

Will keep this in mind and keep you updated!

  • +2

    Is there a trial version

    • There is a free v1 version on the website but it is quite slimmed down compared to v2.

  • Great tool, well worth the money. It does need a better way to manage offset accounts (the reddit community threads seem suboptimal on this topic), but fantastic other than that.

    • which most likely everyone will have offset account that has a homeloan
whats the issue specifically on this with the spreadsheet? curious

      • +1

The current suggestion is to decrease the value of the loan by the offset amount, bar an emergency fund of 25k (number up to you), which you put in the savings tab for general spending. It has negligible effect on the interest calculation, but not the cleanest solution. The subreddit is a good place to understand these things/how other people tailor the tool.

    • +2

Definitely looking into this for my next version to make it easier. Coming soon in v2.14 :-)

  • Just bought it. I think it will be definitely worth more than $6.

  • +1

Do people use this for 'on the go' recording as well? For example if I go out and spend $2 cash on a snack, can you easily record that transaction or is this more for you to do some bookkeeping at the end of the day/week?

    • You can probably start a new sheet in the workbook to enter all the expenses there, but accumulated data over time will become messy and difficult to navigate.

Will need an app backed by database, not spreadsheets.

    • +1

No, that's not the point of this.

With this, you update your net worth at the start of each month.
So update your cash, investments, dividends, property, assets etc and you have a monthly record of your net worth.

  • Hey mate.. Just bought it and looking forward to using it.

I tried entering few of my details but I am stuck in quite a few places (crypto, stocks etc.) I tried reading your instructions but I am unable to move forward. Is there anyone from your support team who can dm me for a quick chat/call? Thanks

    • You can reach out on the subreddit or PM me privately. The subreddit is preferred and you will likely get faster responses there too.

  • +1

I have been using this spreadsheet for more than 2 years. Highly recommended.

  • hey guys, I actually emailed you because I bought this last year and can't find the link.

    no response for months lol

    • Hi sauce2k, sorry for this experience I usually try and reply to all messages. If you privately message me here I’ll generate a new invite for you.

      • done thank you

        • Just replied to your PM and resent the invite.

  • +1

Will I be able to track several entities with this? For example I hold some shares personally and some in a trust.

    • +1

Absolutely. As long as you are ok to have them considered together in the sheet you’ll be able to see them all in one place.

Alternatively, you can run one sheet for your personal investments and another for your trust.

  • +2

    Hi OP,
Looks great but I am cautious about entering personal information into yet another online system.
What is the privacy policy? What personal information is stored and shared; how is it stored, and who is it shared with?

    • The spreadsheet is stored in your own google drive and does not send any data externally. There are some automatic integrations, but these only pull data from external sources (e.g share prices)

There's also a FAQ answer on this: https://guide.cspersonalfinance.io/getting-started/faqs

      • Thanks mate, I couldn't see a link to the company's Policy like most sites have.

    • Good question! I’ve tried to be very conscious of the privacy side, and I would say this sheet is unique since it’s self-hosted by you with all the inherited security of Google. I also have this the FAQ:

The Sheet has been designed to be completely self-contained. When you download the Sheet and make a copy, it's now its own independent copy hosted by you.

You can review all the formulas to see how that works, but it's strictly a one way fetch process and if you go Tools -> Script Editor in the Document you can review all the code yourself to make sure it checks out. Furthermore, no personally identifying information or sensitive information such as passwords/usernames are needed nor requested.

The only inputs into this Sheet are holdings and amounts, the minimum information needed to determine your net worth & associated performance.

  • Does it work for offset account + loan account for joint holders?

When was the last version released?

    • Yes it does. You can setup your sheet to support offsets and the question of joint holders is if you want to track your combined loan amount or individually.

Latest version was introduced May 2023 and I’m currently working on the next version after a brief break last year.

  • I know there were talks about converting this into a (web?) app, is that still something you are thinking about?

  • Hey OP - side question - What stops your own Intellectual Property from getting stolen with this type of online spreadsheet arrangement? (and someone say releasing a clone?)

Does the purchaser have access to all the underlying source code and functions that makes the sheet work - like a traditional standalone XLS file would?

Or, does the sheet invoke remote logic/functions/services - that only you the developer have the source code to - and for which the online spreadsheet relies upon?

I've thought about doing sporting organization game scheduling using a similar online spreadsheet based approach.

  • can this be accessed on mobile and desktop seamlessly?? or any app?

    • I use it on mobile with Google dheets

    • +1

It's a Google sheet, so yes. But for some reason the monthly update of net worth button has to be pressed on a desktop.

  • +1

I use this almost every day it's the sheeeeeet

  • Can confirm this is great for tracking your crypto and meme stock losses. Source: am degenerate gambler

  • +1

Just bought this. But the question remains: did I save $2, or did I lose $6?

    • you just bought something to use forever instead of drinking 1 beer :)

      • +1

Maybe half a beer these days

  • I previously purchased on previous deal and did not receive the link.

    OP was unresponsive via DMs.

Disappointed and hopefully OP can address the issue now.

    • Hi there soljah, I’m sorry it was not my intention if a message did not go replied.

Please send me a PM and just like a commenter above I will sort this out for you now. Sorry for any issues you’ve experienced.

      • PM Sent

        • OP can you please respond to my PM

  • Been using this since Feb 2020, highly recommend

  • I’ve just bought this, thanks. It’s a bit unusual to be selling a google sheet, but I think it’s actually really smart. Instead of reinventing the wheel you’re keeping costs low by leveraging Google’s tech, and all the security and reliability that comes with it

Quick question - it looks like the “slim version” is the right fit for me based on my privacy appetite. From what I understand if I also want to use the slim version in the next update I won’t be able to use the migration tool. How hard would it be for me to manually migrate? Workable or impossible?

    • +1

That’s the plan! I’ve always been a fan of having control over your own data, and you manage the product going forward. No subscriptions which is rare in this day and age.

As for your question about migrating, it is possible if you don’t mind going through a few steps to copy the migration script in temporarily. This question was also asked here recently.

  • @CSPersonalFinance

Love your work on this. It's been amazing :)

Is 2.13 the latest version still? Is there anything else new in the works?

    • +1

Glad to hear you’re enjoying it and it’s been useful! I’ve got a few things around UI cleanups, ease of use and reducing visual clutter.

Also a lot around property, currency support and generally making the sheet more usable and friendly. Coming soon :-)

  • Purchased. I think for a cost of coffee, this is going to help me save on my fortune on coffess. :D

  • I just bought this and having now gone through it, I'm not sure how useful it will be for my situation.

I just bought my first home so that really simplified my finances in that pretty much everything extra goes into my redraw account. So there is no cash to speak of. I have a share portfolio but honestly thinking I'll probably just sell it off and put it into the redraw.

Maybe I am unusual for so aggressively paying down my mortgage and some others keep large amounts of cash outside of their mortgage so it would be helpful to them.

What I was really hoping it would do is have some sort of automated way to tally expenses by pasting in your monthly credit card expenses (or other bank statements). Any cha ce something like that is coming OP?

    • Even though your wealth may not be concentrated in cash so to speak, you still have a salary and outgoings each month that likely comes out of your offset.

This sheet can help you track your short and long-term averaged outgoings each month and also how you are paying off your home over time. Ultimately you are still building your wealth and net worth and this sheet will help you visualise and it and see it grow over time.

This can be extremely motivating, especially with a mortgage which can seem like such a far off goal to complete.

It can also help you target a savings rate which is still relevant to someone with an offset/loan.

      • Fair enough. Maybe I just need to go through more detail on how to set up the spreadsheet. Also, I may need to follow through for a couple months it seems before I really see much out of it. I will give it a go. Thanks for the response.

      • +1

Oh, I wanted to ask. Is there any plan to implement a system so that you can paste in your expenses (I can download them from my bank in a spreadsheet) and have it somewhat automate the categorisation and tally up your incoming and outgoing?

        • I use frollo for this

          • @polol: Ah great I'll give that a go. Thanks!

  • As a British citizen in Australia, would this spreadsheet allow me to track my UK and AU investments in one place?

    • +1

Yes it can, all investments can be entered in overseas currencies and it will be live converted back to AUD or GBP depending on which sheet region you choose.

      • Thanks, what about things like private pensions or ISAs which have some nuances, particularly from a FIRE point of view?

        • you really think your $6 bucks is worth $600 don't ya lolololololol

  • +1

Purchased this in 2021 and it has been absolutely amazing at helping me keep track of all finances and purchasing my first home. Highly recommend. Easily worth it.
