Darwin is halfway there and still more expensive than Sydney or Melbourne. ☹️

For those with VA Gold/Platinum or any Star Alliance Gold partners, this is a very good deal

    • Why does it make it a better deal?

      • +2

        lounge access, extra luggage allowance

    • +1

RIP I let my VA gold status lapse in favor of Qantas :(

      • Dont worry, you still have very generous allowances and benefits on Emirates, Oneworld, China Eastern, Westjet and KLM/AF (When travelling on a QF flight no)

hey @beatthatflight, mind improving contrast on the filters a bit?

having a bit of trouble seeing the options at a glance

    • +1

Yeah, it's on my list this week, sorry. I just redid some of the colour scheme, had some functionality issues, and now working on accessibility WCAG stuff which will include fixing contrast.

      • +1

ah thought it looked quite different to the last time I checked.

any chance there will be a 3xcamel style email notification for custom routes feature rolling out this year?

        • +1

Took me a few different attempts - in the end I've gone with a semi-transparent background to make the text clearer. Let me know if that's better for you.

3xcamel, haha that's the dream. Let's see how the two kids under three treat me sleep-wise this year ;)

          • @beatthatflight: you poor sod, I had to give up side projects with 2 😐

forced refresh, the contrast is still a bit low on some parts of the background?

            • +1

@twig: My only remedy at present is to be coding/building/flight hunting with the baby on my lap for a couple of hours a night while the wife sleeps. I have noticed our list of tv shows/movies keeps growing though, we never seem to get time any more ;)

9 hour flight lol, man up

    • +2

Hong Kong, omg so far, poor baby.

Is it possible to add a few days of stopover in Singapore with these fares?

    • Good question, I would also like to know!

  • +14

Hong Kong ain't a shadow of its former self. RIP

    • Never been. Please explain.

      • +13

Autonomous city now well and truly noosed. Locals and foreigners alike pulling up stumps, as it is now effectively just another region of the PRC (with all the negatives that entails).

        • +3

MANY expats have pulled up stumps and moved to Singapore and Bangkok, including many that ran hospitality venues. Nightlife and food scene loosing its vibrancy.

          • @dtpearson: By food scene you mean non Chinese food?

            • @caustic birch: Some HongKonger are bringing their family leaving the city and moving to other countries and foreigners have relocated to Singapore or other Asian cities.

Less tourists mean less business, which means they can't afford to pay the rent anymore.
I travelled back to Hong Kong last year, I can tell it was so much quieter than pre-Covid. Shops started to close at 8 pm which is extremely unusual for Hong Kong.

              • +1

@chrisishere: We just returned from HK/Macau on a family vacation and I was surprised at how less crowded HK was than I envisaged (last trip there was >10 years ago).

                • +1

@Craze: I was born and raised in Hong Kong. HK changed after 2019 and Covid. People started to give up and move on to a new country to start their new chapter of life. Especially the UK government offer them a visa to stay, study and work and it will lead to citizenship if they stay more than 5 years, which makes thousands of families sell their houses and business in HK and move to the UK and Canada in these years.

Hong Kong hasn't changed much in landscape and skyscrapers but you will know how much it changed if you dig deeper about Hong Kong.

    • +15

I went a couple of months ago after going their pre covid. Definitely very different vibe, not many foreigners around anymore and much less touristy. But on the plus side at least you don't get the tourist scammers pestering you since they're gone too.

I only went to take the kids to Disney, not sure what appeal it has beyond that for Australians these days, you're better off going to Singapore or Thailand amongst other closer places in Asia.

    • +4

Hong Kong hasn’t been the same since the PRC started cracking down on its autonomy. Hardly worth it for the risk of being extradited overseas for NSL.

      • -1

It's still nice there. Went to HK in early Dec. The whole CCP fear is over the top; just don't cause any trouble with the law etc - the same applies for when you're in another country.

    • Just went in early Dec. It was still awesome. Even better the fact that it wasn't overcrowded af.

  • +4

Thumbnail looking like a pterodactyl flying through the city.

  • What is the rainy season in Hong Kong?
About 80 percent of the rain falls between May and September. June and August are usually the wettest months while January and December are usually the driest months.

    • Rainy season, fainy season. It's no biggie, just pretend you're in Blade Runner, especially around Nathan Road. Although personally I've found Seoul to be the closest approximation.

  • -2

    One-way only would be better.

  • +8

Ohhhh, the picture in the deal is a girl sitting in a hammock overlooking the city, not some crazy bat human hybrid flying over it.

  • +4

Perth pricing not competitive, would just go direct with Cathay for 100 more

  • +2

most visited city in the world? the stats are more than 5 years old. Need to be updated!

    • +3

      HK is now 17th

      https://www.euromonitor.com/press/press-releases/dec-2023/eu…

It is now top of my personal list of cities to avoid. Sadly.

      • -1

Yup. The PRC have effectively killed off HK as a tourist mecca. It's only really a stop over now for most people. SG on the other hand….

      • Why avoid? Went there in early Dec and it was lovely.

  • Hong Kong was amazing. Went in early Dec using the Cathay Pacific deal return Bris $684. Was definitely worth it but I should probably go to Thailand/Vietnam/Bali etc (never been to those places before). Also, you're better off going to mainland China as it's far cheaper and still an awesome experience.
