  • I bought one yesterday. Cheers

that is a very good price for that unit, the airmouse is a good combo to have with it aswell.

there are a couple drawbacks to the mk808
1 - the wifi isnt always stable, sometimes it can take a while to connect
2 - standby is hit and miss - sometimes you have to power cycle it
3 - xbmc isnt officially supported, there is a release that works with the unit but it doesnt have hardware acceleration for graphics. i'm not sure if there is a root fix for this though

its good for browsing, youtube, media centre (the in built video apps are surprisingly good)
cant really play games on it, it lags a little on that front

    but great deal!

    • I bought the mk802 a while back and have been having ongoing issues with the Wifi. I came across a thread that mentioned the HDMiI could be causing interference.

The solution which worked for me was to boot the device without the HDMI cable attached. After waiting for a minute or two, reattach the HDMI cable and it would be fine from there. It still causes issues from time to time but I've found a spot of the device that has Wireless strength at 92% and all seems fine for the most part.

If you are using an alternative OS (im using Lubuntu), then I simply remove the cable as I can access the device via SSH and also VNC from a different machine.

      • I have an MK802 version II. I found that unless you connect it to a 1000mA power supply, the WiFi will not connect properly. Basically, as soon as it is struggling to get enough power, it's the WiFi that suffers first.

      • do you have the mk802 v1 or v2?
v1 has heating issues, v2 has wifi issues and perfomance issues

re: the hdmi trick - personally i would want to plug this into the tv and forget about it
like i said, its good as a media centre

also is the wall power adapters on your mk flimsy? they seem to be cheaply made and pull out of the powerpoint too easily.

still a great media centre and a way to browse the web on the tv
my friend is testing the mk802v2 which seems to be a winner at this stage
but i guess if you used a usb hub and connected a dual band wifi dongle that would fix the problem and you would have a better decent unit

        • I think mine is v2. I has some holes to let heat escape. I think the v1 didn't, hence the heat issues.

When I plug my device in, the radios in the house pickup a lot of interference so I might try another power source.

I agree about the HDMI trick. The cable I have is most likely very cheap so a higher quality (i.e. shielded) one might fix the issue. With that said, now that I have the device picking up a good wifi signal, it isn't as much of an issue as it used to be.

        • I have got Mk802 1GB (also known as MK802+), it worked perfect for me without any problems for the first couple of months, and then it suddenly started giving blank screen about half an hour of using it, i.e. the system crashes and display just goes black. A lot of people on Rikomagic Forums think it's because of heating problem, as the device gets really hot when any CPU intensive app is running (HD video on youtube). The exposed portion of the HDMI gets very hot due to convected heat from within the device. I am thinking of modding it and putting a heat sink with a fan over it to see if that helps, otherwise it feels like I've wasted my $60 for a short period of home media entertainment.
I never had any issues with Wi-Fi etc. I think the device has a great potential - I used mine for Skype Video Chat, home camera remote security, downloading torrents, live streaming channels etc.

There is one other major limitation - ABC iView (and probably also other Oz content apps) won't install. For reasons best known to the firmware authors, the mk808 pretends to have a 3G radio installed, with China Mobile as the telco. So the Google Play Store thinks that its located in China and won't allow territory-restricted apps to install.

      Major, major pain.

      • There is an ABC iView android app?

Go to this address mate, explains how to hack the play store and fix this issue. I haven't done it on my UG802 yet. Was planning on setting it up as a media player but couldn't get a working XBMC app installed that worked with SMB shares and not DLNA. Because of this I don't think I've touched it in about a month..

Does anyone know of a good media player that works with SMB shares (normal windows file sharing)? As I'm not a fan of DLNA at all!

    • Any recommendations where to get an Airmouse?
EDIT: ah just looked a bit down, nvm

  • been waiting for a deal on the 808,

927 sold though, wonder how long is the wait+delivery going to be?

    • Hmm. Quite a while I'd imagine. Try ordering one via aliexpress.com

      • do you have a link of good seller?

        thanks

        • Ive only used AliExpress a few times so I don't have a seller i could highly recommend, no.

  • +1

Been thinking about one of these but everywhere I read seems they're "developing" and "improving" and still quite temperamental.

    Up vote for the price.

Anyone had experience with this one? Thoughts?

Edit: 3 people posted between me starting to type and finishing…

  • anyone know if the linked 'airmouse' would work on a PS3? it says it works without drivers…so i am assuming the dongle is using usb standard keyboard/mouse input signals?

    http://www.in4dealz.com/deals/Mini-Gyroscope-Fly-Air-Mouse-R…

    • the airmouse uses a usb 2.4ghz dongle. not sure if ps3 compatible though

    • I have ordered one a week ago and waiting for the package to come.

      • ordered from this site? or another site?

        • Yes from the same site.

  • Will it support ABC iView out of the box?

    • It says that it supports Flash, So I think it supports ABC iView through the browser.

      • I use iView all the time on android tablets, you just need to load a no longer supported version of Adobe Flash Player, I do this all the time

        • Firefox works out of the box with Flash, so the combo of sideloading Flash and installing the latest Firefox Beta gets you access to iView.

      • What that article is saying is why the ABC won't write an Android app for iView, not that it's impossible to view iView on Android. As you can see, people have done it through the web browsers and Flash.

    • You can load Linux on an SD card and run it that way. I use Lubuntu which is a stripped down Linux distro. It has Google Chrome and all other necessary pieces of software. I havent tried iView on it but I'd be surprised if it didnt work.

If you are using as a media centre for iView, SBS etc., the easiest user interface would be XBMC with the iView add-on. I havent tried XBMC but I read it is available.

      • I used Chromium on Ubuntu and the iView works well. didn't find the XBMC plugin tho.

    • No, because itpretends to have a 3G radio installed, with China Mobile as the telco. So you cannot install Australian only app's directly from the play store.
That being said if you have the .apk installer it would would.

http://mindbuntu.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/root-and-play-store… Read this, it's about hacking the play store to change the region

  • I'll keep this in mind, as the Tablets I have do the same job atm, I don't need this(convincing myself)… lol

    • In what way do they do the same job?

      • I would suggest connecting via HDMI to a TV for media streaming etc.

      • I guess some people have never used the HDMI port on a tablet !? lol

        • Some of us just use Airplay, lol.

        • Even many phones can connect to tv via hdmi

        • Can you open a browser on your TV using Airplay and watch Flash videos e.g. streaming web channels/shows ?

        • -1

yea, I watch a lot of asian & european movies via my browser on the tablet attached via HDMI to my tv…., the tablet has a USB port as well, to attach bluetooth dongles/receivers like the ones used with air mouse, why all the questions don't you people already know all this basic stuff ??? lol

        • Elijah, I was just asking how a tablet can be used in the same way as this product. You response was ignorant. :)

        • +2

kiwi, Your question was ignorant…, where do you think this idea of a USB came from ??, remove the screen from a tablet and you get a fully functioning usb hdmi android device like this…

        • +1

Why vote Elijah down, useful info for tech idiots like me, really useful discussion for me :-)

        • +1

I had an opinion, someone had a trolling question, I went with it, which led my nek minnit friend down the troll highway, what can I say ? I can bs all day if you want… :)

  • -2

    Ok.

  • do subtitles work via hdmi? like internal subtitles! i know they dont via mhl

  • +3

    this or raspberry pi?

    • raspberry pi for me…

    • +5

this is significantly faster(1.6GHz Dual Core vs 700MHz single),double the memory, Wifi and keyboard adapters inbuilt, 8GB storage vs none, and android apps.
Pi is much lower power consumption, full linux flexibility, and more connectors.
While they both cost around the same but are for different purposes, like comparing a tablet to a PC.
I have a Raspberry PI set up as a NAS/Media center but am looking for something with a better interface.

      • yeah but the USB ports on the pi are a temperamental prick and it's slow as fuck for normal computing use.

  • can this be used as a NAS with an external hard drive?

    • Not recommended !, especially on customized OSs such as this, poor wifi and other intermittent issues will cause more headaches, remember one thing these are generic devices made as cheap as possible, a really small form factor, expect only a fun filled media service from this…

  • Makes a great toy :)

  • I'm thinking of getting one for the parents who like the idea of surfing the net on the TV. I keep reading about wifi problems and other weird glitches.

If I hooked it up to a good 2A power supply, will it be reliable enough for um, parental use?

    • I think it should be alright, especially for light usage as you mentioned.

There is also another option of using a USB ethernet dongle to connect to internet via an Ethernet cable.

      • +1

It would be more compelling if it came with Ethernet built in. Already have Ethernet to the TV for 3 other devices, one more is not a problem. Vastly superior to flaky wifi.

      • I have one of these but I am not able to get internet working through USB output of my router. Please suggest.

        • +1

I was under the impression that those USB ports on routers only work when connected to a PC with suitable drivers. Unlike Ethernet or WiFi which is covered by standards.

      • OK, just ordered one, hope it doesn't take too long to arrive, and it's stable!

  • I dont know what this for -.-

is it meant that i can operate OS in my TV using this thing?

    • +1

      MK808 is the first TV Box in our market featuring the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Operating System. It can upgrade your no-frills basic TV to a "smart TV" quickly and easily;
With this MK808, You can watch stunning 1080p HD content with amazing clarity from YouTube and many more popular sites directly on your TV! Send email, update your Facebook status, play Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja like never before. Download new apps from the Market, create and display a powerpoint presentation, listen to music, read e-books, and play nearly all of those interactive games you love so much on your phone or tablet.
Compared to other TV box models, this MK808 TV box has 8GB storage and dual Wifi antenna! The WiFi signal from the MK808 is unmatched compared to the competing versions. It also uses the Cooling SMT technology with a double-sized heatsink which reduces internal operating temperatures for stability and better performance.

      Reading.
      T'is not hard.

    • It is pretty much similar to an android phone or tablet without touch. This doesn't come with a remote control so you need a keyboard and a mouse to control this. Check those YouTube videos so you can get a good idea about what this little gadget can do.

  • yeah, i have read that. but umm.. cant really get the idea to get this item

what do you use it for respectively?

    • +1

Do you have a tablet? Do you watch movies on it? Do you watch YouTube on it? Think of this as a tablet minus the screen and you have to provide the TV, a mouse and maybe a keyboard.

      • yeah got a tablet but dont really use it, prefering my PC tho
and maybe im not watching any youtube is the reason i cant find the reason to get this item

maybe i will try to buy it for my famz

        cheers greenpossum

    • I don't know wherein your confusion lies…
Do you have a smart TV? If not, then plug this bad boy in, and bam, you now have Android 4.1 on your TV. You can do anything you would normally do with an Android device (so I'm given to believe), though attempting to use the interface by touching your TV is not recommended.
Basically, you can use this to stream things to your TV (built in WiFi, which a lot of smart TV's don't have. $60 adapter my ass -.-), or plug a hard drive into to watch things, etc, etc.
Those are the more mainstream uses, but I'm sure you can find some more if you google around a bit, the internet it a big place.

      • will try it
sounds cool, having a smart tv without paying that much

        cheers ProspectiveDarkness

      • Does it work with any HD tv? What sort of input ports are needed? I believe I have one hdmi In and one set of component ins.

        • I'm assuming just HDMI is required, but I could be wrong.

  • Its $51.99 Now.

  • As soon as these cheapy Android box's can run a fully-functional XBMC environment I'm definitely buying one. From what I've read about these sort of devices (including the Raspberry-pi) at the moment, they all have problems with the UI and library updates being choppy, trouble with true 24hz output and choppy DTS decoding and problems bitstreaming audio.

The ARM builds of XBMC seem to be receiving heavy development though, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time. But to quote the official XBMC wiki: "It is highly recommended for users to not make any purchases in anticipation of running XBMC on Android. In other words, don't buy anything yet until development is further along! "

  • Is it possible to hook up a touch screen to one of these bad boys? It would make a nice in car media player.

    • dont see why not, but this thing needs a separate power supply so u need to work around that

  • +2

Junk. A 20MB/s 20GB .mkv would kill it. The best media streamers are the ones you build yourself.

  • ive used this and gotten a custom rom with pre root on it, which removed alot of the china bloats, thing is quite fast but alot of the apps with vertical screen will not work properly(wheres my water…agent dash..etc) not sure if any1 has fix for it, its quite annoying but other than that, almost everything works, also some touch based games just will not work for unknown reason, theyll refuse to react to the mouse touch, its hit or miss it seems and theres no way of telling unless you try it

  • Expired

  • Web page says deal closed now

  • +1
  • Just wonder….
Since this thing have only one USB port
If It requires a USB controller (Mouse, keyboard etc.. ) , how can you control this thing when you want to access stuff in your HDD ? -.-

    • +1

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that a USB hub works fine, infact it actually helps with some of the minor issues that people have been having.

      • You'd want to use a powered USB hub though.

    • +2

Im thinking of using the usb-otg adaptor to hook up the remote bluetooth adaptor, and leave the usb port for the HDD.

  • +1

oh yes usb hubs work perfectly so u can daisy chain as you wish

  • Have you guys received any notification indicating the item has been posted?

    • Mine hasnt been posted…. and yet the Keyboard I bought with it, I got a email stating its been posted. odd.

      • Just got notification its been posted

  • both MK808 & kybd arrived. No video out….or is there need to switch the device on or something? Tried on 3 x hdmi input sets. thanx

    • Hey Teddo,

Is the delivery free and did it come with oz power adaptor.

      • yeh, delivery free and 240v power & adaptor. The fault was an o/c hdmi cable - $4 off ebay.

        Works great! Great deal!

        • Thanks teddo. Already placed order

  • Guys,
