Game Nexus entered to the chat

    • Zune rant in 3 2 1 :D

    • +10

      ASUS: We're confused.

  • +25

Asus are not very popular right now, dodgy warranty dealings make people nervous.

  • +7

I've been buying Asus for a very long time but I'm a bit hesitant now. Wonder if things are different in Australia.

    • +12

      Same in Australia too.
I had my 4090 power connector melt and ASUS charged me $110 to repair it within warranty!
I argued with them but they insisted it was user error, even though the cable was under no tension and I checked on a weeekly/fortnightly basis to ensure it was firmly pluged in and had not come loose.
Even though it's a well known issue with 4090s.
Swore never to buy ASUS products again.

      • So did you pay in the end?

        • +4

Yes, i caved and paid it, they already had it for 6 weeks and took many business days to reply to any emails, and i just wanted it back so i paid the $110. Although i did argue with them over several email exchanges to no avail

          • +7

@Tamagotchi Breeder: Ah so the typical hostage holding. Business as usual at ASUS then.

Sorry bout your GPU mate. You'd think forking out roughly 3k or more would warrant you some sort of good CS but I guess ASUS prefers the g'old scamming business rather than actually serving their customers. Because that's how you built your brand! /s

          • +1

@Tamagotchi Breeder: Wow, its kind of like your got ransomware & at the end decide to pay, you should have stand FIRM and tell Asus to F.O.

            • @kaikor: Sure, but their stance was that if i didnt pay then they would send it back "as is", mind you, they already had it for 6weeks at this point in time.
If i went to ACCC or told them to FO then they would have sent back my broken card back and I would have had to go through ACCC, which I assume isnt quick (being a government body).
I would have been without my 4090 until the 5090 released.

          • +4

@Tamagotchi Breeder: Report them to ACCC or fair trading

    • +4

Same here, I needed to buy a new monitor last week and it was between an Asus and a Philips. The Philips won just based on Asus warranty support.

  • +5

Now make me scare of looking into Asus laptops … Seems from all reviews Dell still got the best customer services when it comes to warranty claims or fixes.

  • +1

completely out of the loop but whats the issue with it?

    • +1

MicroSD card slot fails due to it being on the top, near the exhaust vents. I don't really use my MicroSD card slot because I installed a 2tb SSD from OzB in mine.

    • +14

Got caught trying to scam/extort one of the more popular youtube channels.

    • +30

Gamers Nexus (YouTube channel) sent in their handheld for a (legit) warranty repair. Asus service centre told them warranty void because of user damage. The "damage" is a literally a tiny mark on the plastic case that needs a microscope to be viewed. (Also unrelated to the joystick warranty issue)

Not only that but they said that now since the warranty is void, you will have to pay for repairs or your device may be returned UNASSEMBLED.

Asus then doubled down with a "no u" statement to Gamers Nexus, truly bizarre response. GN is a bad team to make enemies with.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pMrssIrKcY

Also, this is one year to the day since Asus last got caught trying to scam customers for warranty repairs, and promised they'd learned their lesson

      • People never seem to learn. It makes humans look very stoopid.

        • Corpo are not humans.
They only care about one thing : profit

          • @pinkybrain: I'm referring to the buyers. There's plenty of evidence out there that Asus don't give a f**k, but people keep bending over anyway. I can't be on with the pissing and moaning of folk who put their hand in the fire and wonder why it got burnt.

            • @Lps: that cos most people are timid when going against a corporation..

If they try and the corpo customer service tells you No, or pay this amount and we will fix it else send it back disassembled..
many people just fold rather going to next step of reporting it to ACCC or whatever government agency that handles that matter in

That is why Channels like Gamers Nexus are great in exposing them which scares the Corpo reputation and possible sales..

Just look at how Gamers Nexus exposed Linus Tech Tips bad company practices in regards to how LTT review their products and sexual misconduct within the company..
A few employees would not be able to cause LTT to do a major review of the company's policy and practice.

  • So outside of the SD Card gate issues on the ROG Ally, what else is there to hate with it?

    • +7

Battery life is a bit short, but its probably expected.

      • Thanks for that! i suspected that was the case since it uses the higher TDP CPU, outside of that it seems like a better overall experience over the steamdeck with the bonus of running windows.

Outside of that the overall consensus I got with my own quick research over the steamdeck (non oled)
-Touch bit lighter 608g vs the steamdeck 669
        - better screen 120hz
        -better CPU performance

Reasons to stick to my current steamdeck
        - better battery life
        - no SD Card gate (I don't use it so shrug?)

        Neutral reasons
        - in light with current issues, warranty for me is ignored, considering the steamdeck is also grey market (well the one I purchased)

Keen to hear peoples thoughts on my opinions as I'm fairly out of the gaming space these days.

        • If you're happy with the steam deck, just stay with the steam deck. I went with the rog ally as I can use it as a portable PC, and really, a charging cable isnt that far away, so I enjoy the better screen and gameplay experience. The steam deck is also significantly larger, despite only being 10% heavier.

          • @ATangk: Steam deck has better inputs including the track pad which makes it easier to play more types of games.

Also who wants to keep charging their portable hand held pc all time?

            • @pinkybrain: You should be taking a break every 1-2 hours anyways.

              • @ATangk:

I went with the rog ally as I can use it as a portable PC

You can do that on the steam deck too but the reality is how many people are actually using for that purpose?
People are buy it to game not to use it as portable PC (even it is possible to do it on either devices)

and really, a charging cable isnt that far away

Yes I can see why you would always need to be near a charging cable.

so I enjoy the better screen and gameplay experience

If you enjoy it at the max resolution and full power the battery will drain even more faster, some say only give you like 30 mins of gaming ..

Can't believe how bad the battery is till I saw this
                https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/comments/14hlwkh/how_long_d…

Some people in that reddit also says the device still only give you about 3 to 4 hours of gaming while you are charging it
cos the charging rate is slower than how much power it needs while gaming.

You should be taking a break every 1-2 hours anyways.

                LOL
                Nice copium response…

If I was immerse in some gaming session, it would get pretty annoying to regularly see the low battery warning every 1-2 hrs then need to go charge
                it
OR worried that the battery could die any time if I chose to ignore the warning.

And if I was travelling while playing I would constantly worried if the battery dies suddenly and I lose all my progress

Due to the constant need to charge it every 1-2 hrs,
-you might as well just turn it into a console or desktop PC (permanently connected to power cable)
-or plug the power cord each time you want to game to avoid these issues (and to get max performance)

This defeats the purpose of it being a portable gaming PC
and you might as well game on your desktop PC

                • @pinkybrain: I can't take my desktop around and plug it into my friends TV can I? Or I guess you can if you think thats the better option.

                  • @ATangk:

I can't take my desktop around and plug it into my friends TV ? Or I guess you can if you think thats the better option.

What are you going on about?

"Can't take your desktop around and plug it into my friends TV can I? Or I guess you can if you think thats the better option."

OK I have no idea what you are trying to say here…

                    Clarify your comment or point..

                • @pinkybrain: Thanks for your input! Probably should have shared my use case, but I travel allot and using it on the plane is the primary use, so I’ll have power there, I would seldomly use battery power.

                  • @Shonggie:

Thanks for your input! Probably should have shared my use case, but I travel allot and using it on the plane is the primary use, so I’ll have power there, I would seldomly use battery power.

So I am not sure what is your intention?

Are you looking to sell your LCD Steam deck and buy the ROG Ally or steam deck OLED?

Do you game a lot on your current LCD steam deck and why do you want to upgrade to these devices?

    • anything warranty related?

  • $829 with eBay plus code from this deal Not sure if unique but you can find it in your profile.

    • It appeared for me.

  • +1

My motherboard Asus ROG B550-I also having issues and going round and round to get it fixed, compatibility issues with RTX 4000 series.

    • +1

Also have the same motherboard, just accepting the reality that it will never support 40 series cards.

Manage to get this 4070 a year ago to upgrade, but with all the compatibility issues just ended up using it in cousin's computer build.

      • I am still pushing them to get it fixed, my 5800X3D still have some life in it. I also contacted ASUS ROG forum reps to get it escalated, since he has been helping a few folks in there with exchanging the mobo.

        • It has been an issue for over a year now, at this point I don't think it will be fixed.

My next upgrade, will probably be a platform change.

  • +1

With Asus' recent antics, a refurb may just mean a tiny scratch from trying to pry the case apart.

  • +9

You better pray nothing goes wrong with these machines. Otherwise Asus will be sure to give you a ride of your life lol

  • +1

Had two Ally's both of which had SD card reader issue.

  • +1

    My Experience. Australian Asus. 2024.

    My Ally had 2 issues.
    1. Drifting sticks
    2. Non-functioning MicroSD Card slot.

Organised a RMA via their website.
    Got approved 2 days later.
Ally was picked up 2 days after that.
Ally was returned within 2 weeks.
    Ally working very well.
    YMMV.

    • +3

We're in Australia so Warranty is definitely different (and much better) here than in the US.

      • +1

Unfortunately, not for my case, my ROG mobo B550-I has issues with RTX4000 series compatibility and has been discussed all over at the official Asus ROG forums and still, all they did was just updated to the latest BIOS and called it a day. FML.

      • +2

Nope same in Australia, read my post reply on the second comment.
They kept my 4090 card for 6 weeks, told me it was my fault, for a known nvidia power connector issue and insisted i pay $110 or they wouldnt honour the warranty.
I tried arguing with them but they insisted that the power connector issue on yhe 4090 (a well known issue) was my fault.
        Never buying asus again.

        • +1

That’s dodgy of them. Will think twice before buying another Asus product.

    • +1

      My ROG Ally warranty experience:
ROG Ally pre-ordered and arrived on release day, had an issue where the left hand RGB ring would flash all different colours when it was cold.
October, sticks stopped working, walked into JB, left 10 minutes later with a brand new one.
March, stick drift issue, walked into JB, left 10 minutes later with a brand new one.

Knowing the cost and effort to replace the sticks, and ignoring the MicroSD issue (I don't use it), honestly I'd be happy to buy one for this price if I didn't have one already, and just factor in the cost of replacement sticks from eBay.
If you're not confident playing with the hardware, probably be best to stick to a retailer where you can do a really easy swap like JB.

      • Or this, stick with JBs, they are really good for warranty, like my Fitbit watch, strap broken less than a year, they just refund me the money instead.

      • Which JB? I asked two to do a swap and they refused and sent it to warranty instead.

        • Mines at Gepps Cross in SA. But it was a while ago. I never buy anymore FitBit product since then.

        • JB Hi-Fi, Toowoomba. Both times it was on the spot replacement. Even better, the way it was processed each time was a return and a purchase of a new one, resetting the warranty period.

      • Agree, I had a Lenovo tablet refunded or exchange. I ended up refunding and getting a higher model that was on sale.

I'd rather deal with JB than direct with manufacturer.

Also reason why I picked mine up from JB and extended warranty for my Ally but so far mine has been working well since purchasing this Feb.

  • +4

$850 for refurb is cray cray

  • Got an Ally for $950 brand new from JB

    • any way how you got it for that cheap? it currently lists for $1099

      • +1

        Probably discounted gift cards.

        • If I have a discounted GCs it could have been less.

      • You ask nicely from any staff or store manager if you can. Then I stacked the spend $300 get $30 off.

    • +1

Got it November last year from this deal. It was $934 for me, and yeah, with discounted gift cards.

No issues so far, though I've never tested the SD Card, no need as I've installed a 2TB SSD.

  • +1

Rather pay $150 more for a brand new one.

    • +5

or $0 to not have to deal with ASUS at all

      • +1

        Even better.
If i wanted a handheld right now the Legion go for $1100 would be my choice.

  • +2

Yeah don't think I'll be buying Asus products anymore

  • +4

When you open the box it comes disassembled with an invoice of $1000 to repair the scratched housing

  • +1

Do not scratch this device it voids warranty. Haha

  • +2

sorry Shads - but too many ASUS dogeysh*t going on as mentioned above several time. Be better off with Oled SteamDeck.

    • +1

All good! I've got both a Steam Deck and Rog Ally and both have different uses. Fortunately I haven't run into any issues with the Ally yet so didn't know much about the issues with Asus warranty. Good to know though!! :)

  • +1

    ASUS Certified Refurbished

    1 Year Manufacturer Warranty

Why does refurbished get more warranty than an new ASUS :D

    • ACL will give you minimum 2 years.

      • +1

I was joking how you will still have to fight for it by the looks of it.

      • There's nothing in the ACL that mentions this, only that it will cover you for a reasonable time after purchase (depending on the price, how the product is used etc).

  • I get all the hate for Asus, but this is actually an awesome gaming device, and besides the Steam Deck, probably the best option on the market. Lenovo Legion Go is good. MSI's offering is shit. All the others (AYANEO etc) don't have local support, for whatever it's worth.

Anecdotally Asus in Australia is across the SD card issues and warranty claims haven't been a problem.

The battery is the main downside. 45 wh isn't great. But sufficient for train rides or sessions before bed.

    • Only 40Wh :(

      • Sorry, I misremembered, you're right it's only 40.

    • I get all the hate for Asus, but this is actually an awesome gaming device

Anyone buying an Asus product now is just supporting their bad warranty business practice..

Need to boycott Asus in order to force them to actually change their policy.

Anecdotally Asus in Australia is across the SD card issues and warranty claims haven't been a problem.

So what exactly are they able to do about this?
Do they also compensate for your damage SD card?

As I understand this is a design flaw so they will need to do a complete new revision model.

      • They’ll just replace the main board apparently. Never used my card in it, so lucky that’s fine.

The speaker issue I had was probably software but hopefully they’ll replace that too.

I agree, they do need to be forced to update their policy. But I did hear ok things about Australian warranty. I’ll report back when they screw me over and change my mind. 🤣

  • Gonna stick with steamdeck to avoid Asus shenanigans

  • +1

Putting this here as a positive experience so far as someone who purchased part of this deal.

Purchased using the Ebay Plus deal for $829 so good additional $20 savings ;)

Shipping came quick, ordered on Monday night and came today. Packaging is adequate. Though came in a weird Asus refurb box clearly stating it was refurb.

The unit had no noticeable damage though had light dust on the screen. Outside of that, no immediate issues, SD Card slot working fine and the speakers are good.

So far, so good! In light of the current Asus warranty / service issues, I would throw the ACCC book at them if I do have any issues if there is any foul play but willing to give them a chance on it.

PS, Noticed that only 2 people purchased according to eBay… surely I'm not the only one of two who jumped on this deal? :P

    • +1

I did too. Very happy so far.
