  • I took up the offer, so how do you know its active on the account?

    • I just got an email confirming I've taken up the offer.

  • +5

For anyone wondering, the ^ is "Excluding calls to mobiles".

  • How do you sign up? I have a Pennytel account, but the link takes me to a deadend flyer…

    • Put your email address in and click the button. It should confirm you've taken up the offer on the next page. It would be nice to see something on your account like jazzymc suggested though.

    • Eh. Browser issue - used IE and I could then see where to insert email address.

    • Yeah I had to disable Adblock for the page to load properly in Chrome.

  • What app do you use on android?

    • pennytel

      • +4

        Try csipsimple.

        • call quality seems very poor on my andriod with csipsimple so I changed to media5 and was much better.

        • Ive rung into Oz on PT using csipsimple many times - clear calls on my $69 Android. Also rung from Westfield using free WiFi. No issues.

        • +1

@aml276. The reason ur call quality is ur havent enabled G729 codec and ur on a poor internet speed/with high jitter.

In csipsimple just enable G729(narrow and wide) codec and disable the rest.

        • Are you using a VPN because you must take care because of packet sniffing from free wifi hotspots.

  • What's "With an ATA" for the home phone?

    • voip

    • Adapter box to enable home phone to connect to adsl line. Some modems have a VOIP function. You plug home phone into modem. Can then use home phone line and VOIP.

  • what do existing customers have to do? the is very little info. some people on whirlpool don't appear to be fond of it http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2027047

    • Put in email and thats it

  • ATA as in using a VOIP router + home phone.
you need to have a VOIP Modem/router and setup the "ATA" in settings and use VOIP for all your calls. I used them before when they where $15 pm unlimited for all my calls, but I had bad ADSL when it rained, bad news in Cairns.

I dunno how ppl can use 10 mill mins in a month…
24hrs x 60mins x 30days = 43200mins, so even if you talk 24/7 until the end of the offer, you still have 9956800mins left! :)

    • I guess theoretically you could have a few ppl calling from same account simultaneously. But excellent point!

    • +1

Guess they are looking to sign up 230 ppl (do the maths)?

    • +1

Isn't 10M the total for all users?

  • +2

Thanks op. I use about 2 bucks a month, but cant not take up an offer for free calls :)

I believe the 10million would be collective, not per account.

  • i just got an email saying i'm registered

  • How good is their mobile app? I was thinking of setting home phone with voip but there wasn't much support in terms of setting up. Mobile app sounds like a good idea. Has anyone used it ?

    • +3

If you run android, VoIP is built in to the os; at least from ICS onwards. Press phone icon, goto settings, scroll all the way down to internet phone. You'll need to configure it naturally.

I've used this when out of the country. It works great. Forward home phone to VoIP and when ppl call your home phone, you pickup on your mobile in nz or the like! Long as you have data.. and I did.

      • +1

Risser, I have ICS on my galaxy s2 and I can't see where you can scroll down to internet phone. I have been using csip and have found that sometimes it registers and sometimes it doesn't, and if it doesn't there is nothing I can do to get it working.

    • I can't seem to log in on their android app..

      • Me neither. I wonder if they have to manually enter new details into the system. I can login to the website fine though. Weird.

      • See Whirlpool. It doesn't work for many - didn't last time I tried. Other Apps listed above like csipsimple works.

  • Email from them goes:

Thank you for registering your details for the 10 million free minutes offer. From 20th December 2012 to 20th January 2013, you can make FREE CALLS!

  • Awesome, covers more countries than the Skype trial.

On reading more….is it just me or are these rates waaaayyyy better than Skype???? Except, I can't seem to find where to download their VoIP software.

  • what is (4) callback? how does it work?

  • Just for reference the 10 Mil minutes applies to everyone collectively. it's not individual.

    • Serious???? Laaaaaaaaaaameee. Probably like 10 free mins now lol haha.

  • Didn't receive the e-mail. Pennytel been whinging that my cc has expired, even though I'm in credit.

    • I dont use CC with my pennytel account. I do BPay

      • +1

        Wise move.

  • got my username and password, i kept entering it in android app and it says invalid… :|

    • FYI: username is not your PennyTel username, it is the PennyTel Account Number.

      • In their welcome email they state account number and password. With their Android app, it's username and password so does that mean there is a separate username we need to sign up for? Putting in account number and password in the app gets the invalid error. While on the website, putting in account number and password logs you into their portal.

        • Account number and password works for me on the pennytel android app.

      • yeap, i tried both the account number and email, doesn't work still

and yes on website, it logs in just fine

just realised some peeps above me go the same issue

        • Yes I have the same issue with csipsimple.
          http://notepad2.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/android-configure-cs…
Not working after all sorts of combinations of user id and passwords.

        • doesn't work on both Android and iPhone…, I can login to the iPhone version tho…

          EDIT: thanks kshitijdesai !

        • 20th Dec 2012 is the start date as per PennyTel website.

Install the Csipsimple app from android market and configure using the below given step:

          Accounts -> Add account
Select Other country providers then Pennytel
User Name: 888XXXXXXX (10 digits pennytel number)
          Password: Your_Pennytel_VoIP_Password
          Click Save button
Settings -> Media -> Codecs, enable only g729 codec and disable all the others.

Worked for me…. Hope it works for you as well !

        • Fantastic. What a crazy system. I changed my password then retried the official Android app and it worked. Great job.

        • All follow the instruction above,

          works 100% on android app

hope OP update with that info too

        • Attn OP: Credit should go to gunnny who actually found the link for Pennytel account configuration. I just messed with the configuration a bit. Thats all! Cheers gunnny….

        • Thanks was fricken hard to get it to work even with instructions. Impossible without

        • G729 Codec is not free?

        • Thanks, it's working.

  • Got it, thanks.

  • Nice.

Do you need VoIP for this or you can use an app?

  • Woohoo, freebie.

Er, don't know anybody in those countries. :) (Well maybe some people with landlines in Australia but I have the Skype freebie till 11 Jan.)

OMG, finally found the software. It's called Penny Mate and it's 60MB in size. You can find it under the Personal VoIP tab on the website once you've logged in.

However, installing it on my Win7x64 it said that there was an unsigned driver. I can run the program however I can't login. Everytime I enter my account number and password as given to me in the first email, it just asks for it again instantly like I entered the password incorrectly or something.

    • Was anyone else on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 unable to connect to wireless/wired LAN? I booted up my computer as normal and suddenly I couldn't access those two things, tried a whole bunch of stuff including reinstalling drivers. Finally figured it out, uninstalled it and voila, everything works as usual now.

      • Just to be clear, by "it" I meant Penny Mate.

  • Bidus suggestion worked

  • Pennytel have come out with a new app, it looks like it could be good but I haven't tried it yet

    • visual speculation.. you live a dangerous life.

  • now i clickewd on the links and registered so how do i know i qualify for this.. should i just make a call and try it out?

  • I cant get this crappy thing to work. I use the SIP password or the registration password it tells me its the wrong one.

Doesnt work on android or on ios

EDIT GOT it to register on the old ip adddresss not the one that sip.pennytel.com points to but cant make calls still.

  • No success with either iPhone or S3…What to do? Do i have to have some credit in my account in order to use this service?

    • Nope. Don't need credit. Did you try the instructions above

      • nope.. i used something else other than Csipsimple. I'll try again once i get home with csimple

        • You must wait a few days before your account is activated properly on the network. It's an ongoing issue for pennytel.

  • I think you need to supply CC details and such, and your drivers license. And possibly top up your account.

As mentioned earlier it screws up your internet if you installed drivers.

  • When I m trying to dial it said "Internal Server Error" Whats this ?..

    • It means that you tried to dial a number without the area code or without the country code or both. Make sure you put it in, same as with skype, you need the "02" if you're talking about a number in NSW.
