  • Great price. Is it sourced from US or another location? How does warranty work?

    • It will be overseas stock, so camera Paradise will have to organise any repairs under their 18 month warranty. it may or may not be repaired by Canon. I've not bought from them myself, but that's pretty much the deal for most of the importers. if you want it repaired by canon you'll have to pay as it's not local Australian stock.

      • I was always under the impression that L series lenses had international warranty. Correct me if i'm wrong.

        • +1

Used to, but Canon Australia changed their policy - cant rememebr when, it was maybe mid this year

  • This is gonna sound dumb, but what is so good about this seeing it's price compared to a cheaper lens ($200 or so)?

    • +5

      quality of the photo.
      quality of the lens.
to put it in layman's terms the $200 lens will not capture enough light as compared to this one.

if you want a good and clear zoom'ed photo at 200mm, you will need to use something like this.

      • +2

It makes you look cool. Long and fat lens like this automatically makes you a pro and a chick magnet.

With jokes aside. I hear this is an incredible lens.

    • +6

      Constant f2.8 aperture
      Weather sealed
      Image stabilisation
      Incredibly sharp even at f2.8
      Fast to focus

The standard "cheap" lenses you get in the kits with cameras are slower to focus, smaller aperture, not weather sealed, not as sharp etc. This lens is the choice for serious photographers.

    • +1

In the simplest possible terms, the more expensive lens will give you a sharper image and allow you to take good pictures in much lower light. Dxomark now rationalises this as "Perceptual Megapixels" when they review lenses. On a 21 megapixel camera the expensive Canon will give you about 18 megapixels which makes it the sharpest zoom lens they've ever reviewed but the cheapie Canon lens will only give you 8 megapixels. This is a bit unscientific but it's a useful metric for the average person.

    • Thanks heaps :)

  • Sry, my mistake.

  • Good price, it's 2400 locally.

1 thing, Canon L series no longer have international warranty on grey stock

2, Greystock, canon Aus might not want to touch it

3, over 1k, GST will be paid if your package is opened (unlikely but happens)

    • +1

for #3, i think REP should put in the +customs bit into the price as well.

      • Says this on their website regarding GST/duty/customs charges:

No Tax for Delivery Addresses in AU and UK

We 100% guarantee you that you will not be charged any GST or VAT. Any additional charges will be billed to us directly. The price you pay to us is all you have to pay to receive the order. Australia: We achieve this by sending your orders to our logistic centres in Australia first; and then divert it to you.

        • -1

That's illegal, fact is if your package is opened you pay the money end of story.

I've bought over 10k of camera gear from HK etc probably 4 or 5 times it's been opened by customs and had to pay $200 GST etc.

        • +3

Based on what I quoted above, they consolidate orders and ship them to their logistics centre in Australia, who in turn ships it to you. GST and customs is likely paid for by them when they ship it to their logistics centre, so you won't need to deal with those charges yourself. Nothing illegal about that AFAIK.

        • They actually value it at $900 i purchase this lens last week and on the shipping docs it was listed as $900

        • +1

Well, if they are undervaluing shipments on their customs declarations, then THAT is fraudulent and illegal.

Hmm, this retailer seems pretty dodgy now, particularly when they are also charging a PayPal surcharge that they aren't entitled to (see my comment below).

        • +1

the statement above is for another seller from dd photographics… it is cheap and reliable , just a bit slow for certain stock, as they have to consolidate orders from hk warehouse, before ship a lumpsump big order to Australia.

from my whirpool forums experience, Camera paradise write on the package "return of faulty , or sort of " to avoid the GST…

        • I purchase from camera paradise and clearly the docs state value $900

  • Haha I love these types of posts, "only over $1500".
But it is a bargain, and I ain't negging the OP; just found it funny.

    • it is considered at bargain if it is the cheapest
if a car dealer posted a ferrari brand spanking new for $5000, even if it is over $1500 it is still a bargain

      • Definition of Bargain:
2 a thing bought or offered for sale much more cheaply than is usual or expected.

Just because something is the cheapest doesn't mean it's the cheapest.
If the RRP of say an item is $100…. and the cheapest you can find is say $99… that does not make it a bargain.

    • "Haha I love these types of posts, "only over $1500"".

I might find it funny too but I have no idea where you are referencing the $1500 bit from.

      • Not limited to $1500; just using it as an example.

  • Good price this! I paid ~2.5k from DD not even 12 months ago!

  • Last year, I paid nearly $2300 importing it from B&H ($1900 + Shipping + GST & handling). Wish I had known about these guys at that time. Bought another prime L lens early this year from these guys. Fast shipping (2 days) and cheap prices.

  • thinking of getting this one on january 2013 before i fly out..

price is good, but dunno i will be charged by GST or not.

my original plan is to buy from dd photographics for $2099 + $6 delivery [have to wait ~ bit slow in delivery], but i can claim GST back..
    which ends up around $1915

still hunting to get below $1900 grey…

    • Not GST will be charged in camera paradise.

      • quite a tempting deal OP. any chance to make it better than your current listed price? i am thinking to get this one + the 3 years international warranty (Mack).

        1) By the way, does it comes with english manual ?
        2) What is the product code for the Mack extra 3 years warranty? different code comes with different maximum value of the warranty, right ?

Comes up $1931.90 for the warranty.. (insurance is 1% ~ $24.38) ends up DD photographics is cheaper for my case, after claiming back GST from airport. Also DDP have a free shipping promotion atm.

        • Yes, English manual is provided.

The warranty will cover the unit price of the product.

        • +2

no english manual was provided with my mark ii when I bought it, just saying

        • The camera should come with a CD which contains user manual, if you need further assistance please provide a CP order ID and email address for us to follow up.

      • Not GST will be charged in camera paradise.

Do you mean you don't charge GST? Or does that customs will not charge me GST?

  • is there any benefit of a weather sealed lens if the body is not weather sealed?

    • I think it is considered "weather-sealed" only when used with an appropriate body. The lens itself is built like a tank and weighs 1.5 kgs. So it gives you some protection from falls and light water sprays.

      • that doesnt answer my question though. im askin about it on a unsealed body.
like it basically is pointless having a weather seals lens on a non weather sealed body when taking photos in a wet area right? since the body can get damaged

        • Well, you just answered your own question didn't you. lens will be okay, body won't.

Your best protection is a wet weather cover like the Aquatech or ThinkTank ones. I've used mine in pouring rain and everything stays dry, with no condensation inside or anything. Expect to pay around $350 for a cover though.

  • Good price for this lens. (It is a fantastic lens … when you do not need the 2.8 … go for the 4.0 which is much lighter and cheaper - it has similar IQ just missing this "one stop" Aperture for low light and better blur).

  • GRR!! Had a feeling you will drop this lens closer to NYE

I paid $100 more just last week form you.

  • Any deals on a 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens?

    Pretty please :D

    • We will forward your suggestion to our product team for future promotion consideration.

    • How about the 24-70mm f/2.8 L lense?

  • +4

Again with the sneaky paypal surcharge. You should mention in the OP that the total price is :

    Subtotal: 1,837.74
    Shipping cost: 69.78
    Surcharge(Paypal): 38.15
    Total Amount: AU$ 1,945.67

    • +2

May as well buy from D-D photographics and not risk the 10% GST IMO.

      • that's what i think as well… thinking of getting this from DDP jan 2013 so can claim back GST, and ends up even cheaper than Camera Paradise listed price

    • +3

Poor form from this retailer to charge a surcharge for PayPal. Doing so is a breach of PayPal's User Agreement:

4.2.d Sellers may not charge a surcharge for accepting PayPal as a payment method.

      https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&conte….

    • if you add insurance , another extra 1%, then, it is even above $1960+

  • wondering if we can use qwibble to get 2% cash back ?

  • +1

I'm going to give this a negative based on some of the apparently dodgy practices by this company revealed above. (I'll revoke it if cameraparadise gives a satisfactory explanation.)

    • Interesting point, what about airlines who always charge a paypal fee ?

      • +2

        Hmm, interesting!

I usually pay for flights using credit cards, so I'm not aware of which carriers accept PayPal, but on Googling just then I see Virgin Australia has a $7.70 surcharge for paying for PayPal. I might actually send an email to PayPal to see if they're entitled to charge that!

    • +1

Do you know what's dodgy? Spreading misinformation or your ability to read.

4.2 Use of PayPal on eBay. Sellers who offer PayPal as a payment method in their eBay listings must follow these requirements:
      a. Accept PayPal if the eBay listing includes PayPal as a payment method.
      b. Accept all PayPal Payment Methods from a buyer, including but not limited to eCheck and credit cards.
      c. Accept international PayPal transactions if the eBay listing offers shipping outside the U.S.
      d. Sellers may not charge a surcharge for accepting PayPal as a payment method."

This site doesn't look like eBay to me.

      • Mea culpa. When I posted I just did a quick and lazy search of the User Agreement based on my memory that PayPal didn't allow surcharges.

The condition I meant to post was this, which applies to all transactions not just eBay:

4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.

        My point still stands, no?

        • And now I humbly stand corrected.

  • +1

Is this the kind I can use as a mug?

  • Doesn't seem worth the savings compared to B and H.

I got this lens for $1,939.00 shipped from eglobal with CHK10 Code and using Paypal for payment, really happy with their service last time received my lens in 3 days so i might go for them again now

  • +1

I have purchased a couple of things from Camera Paradise - a 5dmkiii and a sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 (couldn't afford this baby here, although I am very happy with the siggy) Saved a fair bit after doing my research on almost every site around.

My experience has been the customer service is first class and delivery is very fast. Not sure about current prices on the lenses, but in terms of doing business with these guys, I would be happy to again.

Regarding the GST, I seem to recall they pay any GST if it is charged, so you will not be hit. It came to me marked as 'returning camera lens'.
