Easiest to reach high premiums if you list yourself as a 19yro learner.

lol, one of my cars I am paying $1200 atm with Woolworths and Qantas wanted $6000

      • Must be an EV, ai pay $3000

        • I must be lucky my insurance is 150 bucks a month for a tesla model 3 when I got the car back in 2023 it was 100 bucks a month it hasn't really increased as much as others have. But funny thing is if I want to get a quote right now for the same car with the extras I have it would cost me 400 bucks a month lol. Not sure what the other insurers are smoking.

    • imagine if your were 19 and had a tesla you would be paying 1000 bucks a month in insurance :D

      • +1

stack it with an address that's on a busy street and a corner block

  • +14

Pretty poor deal, you better pay someone to buy the point. Not mentioning that you'll be underwritten by Budget and if you happen to make claim expect you'll get a rejection letter from them and will have fun getting future quote. Qantas does hold onto that 60 days before releasing the point so essentially 3 months worth of premium.

    • +1

Purchased policy 1/6/24, points received 30/7/24 exactly 60 days I received 120,000 points last time for 3 policies

      • So can you cancel after that?

        • +2

          Yes and receive prorata refund

      • 120,000 credited to the same account? 3 policies for different vehicles? How long did the prorata refund take to receive?

        • 2 to 1 account and 1 to another. It says in T&C it’s 40k for each policy. Best to check yourself

Prorate might take a week to arrive from memory?

      • Hi @Brick50, is your $330 incl premium and cancellation charges for all 3 cars? Do you know what their cancellation charge was for policy? Thank you

        • It’s minimum 2k per year and you need to hold the policy for 60 days

So I paid about $6000-$6300 for 3 cars and used up 2/12 months of insurance and got a prorata refund of the rest. There might have been a $40 cancellation fee?

I’ll let you do the rest of the maths and read the PDS to check for cancellation fee

          • +1

@Brick50: Yeah that’s a bit expensive for that many points.

          • @Brick50: So out of the $6300 you paid exactly how much prorata did u get back?

            • +1

@bennybaubles: 305 days worth minus $40 cancellation fee

              • @Brick50: So there wasn’t a cents per days left fee as well? That’s why I’m asking as I’m curious to the exact amount you ended up paying.

    • They also have only 2 weeks of rental while car is being repaired as compared to RACV and AAMI offering unlimited days hire. Last thing you would want after an accident is to worry about getting a rental.

      • +4

Is that really the last thing?

        • Ok. One of the last things especially with kids to drop off and transport to work.

      • +2

compared to RACV and AAMI offering unlimited days hire

Except that any extended period of hire car means they're just going to write off your car, as the total cost of your claim balloons with hire fees. Now unless your car was still very new, you're getting a lump sum payout and you need to hit the used car market to buy a car in a hurry - good luck.

      • +2

I mean, if you aren't at fault you can always get right 2 drive or similar to give you a hire car at no cost.

      • *If you're at fault. If you're not at fault the hire car should be unlimited (Since the other insurer is paying anyway)

    • if you happen to make claim expect you'll get a rejection letter from them

      @lgacb08 what is a "rejection letter" ?

      • Budget is known for refusing to continue insure customers if they make claim.

    • Partner was at fault and Budget direct did not give them a rejection letter. Premium obvs went up but so were other insurers.

  • +7

I would rather just purchase 500 bucks worth of wine for 40k points.

    • +2

You had me at "500 bucks worth of wine"

      • Currently 400 for 25200 points, if you have POints club+ or $50 voucher you can get it for 350

  • Edit, ignore

    • We can't it's the internet

  • +5

It was only $380/month more than my current insurer, and a higher excess. Pass

    • +5

      But you get free points!

    • EV?

  • Price quoted not the worst, though that's including a one-off 15% discount. Default excess is higher, and it applies a minimum age of 21. I don't expect anyone younger to be driving the car, but if they did then the insurance wouldn't apply. Seems to be no default lower excess for glass either.

    • +1

Idea is to sign up for 60 days, cancel and go back to your previous/a different insurer

  • +2

Did anyone do the math and see if it's worth getting the insurance for 60 days followed by cancellation and receiving prorata refund?

    • Its worth it

    • +1

That’s what I wrote in the deal description and what I’m doing, did it last year as well

    • 40,000 points sold for 1.35 cents per point = $540. This will cost you $330 after 60 days so $210 profit. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I guess I’ve done more for $50

    • Insurance is about risk and it will be a bit tricky to find the probability of one getting into an accident.

  • +2

    It’s so expensive

  • So if this is a bit of a rip-off and Budget Direct are like getting blood out of stone, who do people recommend for car insurance?

    • +1

I've claimed on both Bingle and Budget over the years, both very straightforward claims with no hassle.

Although my claims were both the fault of the other party, and both Bingle and Budget had various weird rules to waive the excess - which makes no sense, why on earth should I pay the excess if somebody else drove into me ?! Budget specifically wanted the full address and contact details for the other party - what are you supposed to do if the other party just says no ?

    • +1

RACV, total loss (my fault unfortunately), paid out within 5 days, I was stoked with how they handled it.

  • was comparing insurance since I was due. these guys came out on top for being the most expensive. even the points don't offset it by much @ 1.3c a point

  • So we pay yearly, hold for 60 days and request prorated refund when 40k points are credited?

    • Same question.

    • +2

That's a discussion on that here
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/901014

    • +1

You can also pay monthly as long as the yearly premium is over 2k. This is what I did, I couldn’t get one of my cars to be 2k+ by paying upfront but I was able to if I paid monthly. When purchasing the policy it tells you that you’ll earn the 40k bonus points

  • +1

Do I have to cancel my current insurance or can I just get this insurance on top of it?
So if I say I’m wanting insurance for an 18 on their learners and get the $2000 for 40000 points and cancel after 60 days it’d cost $333 or do the wine deal where I’m not in pc wine club so $498 for 25200 points. Is this all correct? I need points at the end of the year and would like the wine as a bonus but how does this compare to just buying the points out right? Better to get 2 policies and pay $666 for 80000 points? I don’t want to churn another credit card at the moment.

    • +1

You don’t have to cancel current insurance, but I would suggest you do.

Do a new quote with your current insurer to compare with your old price, if it’s the same or cheaper than I wouldn’t hesitate to cancel,do this deal and then cancel it and sign back up with your old insurer

  • I had an awful experience with Qantas travel insurance. It was more like a scam. There is no point paying for an insurance that is will let you down when needed.

    • AFCA will keep them honest

  • -4

Same, travel insurance is a scam unless you wanna get covered for lost baggage

  • $500 for 40k points for insurance on my sh*tbox
Or I just stick to buying $4k worth of gift cards that I'll eventually use.

  • What does 32000 qantas points equate in $ value?

    • Very approximately, $640 (my valuation is 2cpp, based on real world averages - but some of my redemptions have been much better value than that). This assumes you use them for flights.

  • Does any car insurance replace the damaged windscreen with manufacture's made original glass (with OEM logo) if the car is brand new? Appreciate if anyone knows. Thanks

    • +2

i doubt it, they usually go the cheapest route possible.

      • RAC WA apparently used to do it but not anymore unfortunately.

  • +2

Just did a quote. Ridiculously expensive insurance even with all answers being in favour of reducing the premium.

  • +1

    Part B
    Fees that may be charged
Once you have taken out a policy, our agent, as shown on your Insurance Certificate, may charge anyof the fees below (if applicable):
    Early Cancellation - $40
Monthly Instalment Processing - 12 payments of 66 cents per $100 of premiumor part thereof

  • Premium for me is competitive but massive difference in max agreed value. New car of 3 months and current policy has agreed valueat $63k but qantas max agreed is about $51k. Anyone know why the big difference?

    • I'm guessing that's a big factor in why the premium is 'competitive'.

  • How easy to cancel it? Can you do that online or do you have to wait forever on the phone?

    • From memory it is done online via a live chat, if not by clicking a link

  • -1

My quote is $167.98 per month. I currently pay $38 a fortnight for the same coverage. Even for 44,617 points, why would I bother? What a total rip off!!!

    • +3

So that’s $182 for 40,000 points. Seems decent if you ask me.

    • +3

You can fly from Australia to Singapore or Hong Kong or anywhere inbetween (one way) for under 44k points. I doubt you'll be able to find a one way flight for cheaper than the $ cost you paid for the 40k points.

  • I’m paying $74 monthly with Rollin, while Qantas is quoting $135 for the same coverage. However, I believe I’d receive 32,000 Qantas Points if I stay with them for 60 days.
Could you guys please advise how much 32,000 points are worth in dollar value?

  • +2

Thanks OP - first time Ive purposely tried to get my insurance premiums up to reach $166/167 per month!

  • Hi, does $40 Cancellation fee apply to Monthly installment too if I cancel it after 60 days? Also, do they charge me only first two month installment processing fee if I cancel it on the 60th day or still charge me full 12 months installment processing fee? Qantas cost $25 more per month than RAC for my Prado but I could get 32000 points. I guess it's worth to pay $90 extra for 32000 points?

  • Hmmm interesting offer.

My current car insurance runs out in a couple weeks so it’s timely.

Qantas is quoting me $1244, so 16000 points.
Cheapest other provider quote I’m considering is $800. So I’d be deliberately overpaying $444/year.

If I just do 2 months, pro rata plus $40 cancellation fee I’m over paying about $114 to earn 16000 points. There’s value there but not much

  • Would never have thought I’d say this but first time ever Qantas has been the cheapest quote I got for my new car 😅

  • +1

The offer also includes home insurance
