    The design is very human.

    • +5

Must be the "liquid retina display" 🤣

  • Is this the newest version of iPad.

    • Yes it is

    • +2

of the base model iPad? Yes. But not the latest iPad Air or iPad Pro.

      • +3

Not sure why you're being downvoted, you are technically correct. The term newest can also be misleading as the M1 iPad Pro (2021) and M1 iPad Air (2022) or newer, as well as the A17 Pro iPad Mini all will perform better than this newest iPad A16, albeit they will probably cost more.

Now the rush to get Officeworks to pick up and price beat over the phone before they drop the price to $498

    • +2

Won't let me pay with Gift Card over the phone ugggggggggggh

      • @MBix So they actually did pricematch though? What was the final price?

I cant call for another hour :(

        • +6

They did in store for me, I didn’t have gift cards though so $474.05 was the final price.

          • @Apostle0748: Thanks!

I would be very happy to get that price, can't be bothered with gift cards.

          • @Apostle0748: Yep $474.05 for me. I already had a gift card burning a hole in my wallet so had to head in store then be told despite website showing 7 in stock there are none so have to head to another store to pick it up

Definitely should head back to bed

            • @MBix: Purchased for $474.05 :)

    • Great call! Picked one up at Officeworks $474.05! Thanks

    • No rush. Prefer to buy from Big W with 5% discounted wish cards and all colours to choose from.

      • Yeh that's fair, I'd be doing the same but I had a $350 Officeworks gift card sitting in my wallet so wanted to get in before they adjusted the prices to match either Big W or TGG

    • Can I still do this if it's out of stock at my store?

      • My local store was showing stock so I went in but they couldn't find any so they placed a click and collect for me at the nearest store and it was ready 30 mins later for pickup

    • Got one

  • +8

Is this because Apple is dumping stock to other countries due to tariffs in the US?

    • -7

Or Dumping Apple from China, as they have much better value phones/tablets/*tops ;)
The discount is not that big -16.7% vs >-36.2% preorder for more capable 2.3y old S23 Ultra 512G with 12GB RAM for AI since >12m ago & multi-window since 2012, BT S-Pen, superior OLED screen, top camera lenses (in the pocket), DeX windows functionality & more…

      • +7

        Are you comparing a 11" tablet to a 6.7" Phone ?
Why not compare with Samsung Tab instead?

  • +9

The idea of getting rid two perfectly good 9 series and lightning port charging cables from my house is very tempting.

  • +1

Who needs levono when you have ipad at this price.

    • +12

      Appel you mean

  • +7

Great iPad - i've had it for around a month. Perfect for what I need. I have access to Apple employee pricing so paid slightly less.
Non-laminated display didn't matter to me, and to be honest I couldn't even tell the difference in store. I was looking at the iPad Air also, but it's no way worth an extra $450.

This was my pick for cases - excellent quality like most ESR products:

Do you get fired automatically if you dare to use an Android phone?

      • +12

In my experience as an ex-Apple employee I had a personal visit from @TimApple.

He found everything non-Apple and made me burn it all in front of my wife and children.

  • -1

Where can I get cheap officeworks gift cards?

  • +3

thanks OP- just got OW on the phone to price match it for $474.05 (plus another ~$40 off from TRS) . you can only pay via card over the phone however beggars cant be choosers, needed to lock this price in before they match the price.

  • -1

I've been on an iPad Mini 6 since January 2023, so just over 2 years now. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? It was one of the first models on USB-C so I haven't had any issues there.

    • +3

if you got no issues then no

also what you mainly use it for?
do you need a bigger screen?
      is the ipad running slow?

ipad mini is a nice size to use..
      it is not too small
      and not too big..

      • I use it for media (anime, streaming, etc) and not much else.

I've noticed a bit of a drop off in battery life. Is a battery replacement possible on these models? I'd be happy with that if it didn't cost too much…

Agree with the size. I've got a ZUGU case which adds considerable weight but makes it basically indestructible.

Was just tryna self-justify handing it down to my kid so I can get a new toy. Lmao

        • +1

I use it for media (anime, streaming, etc) and not much else.

for that usage I think ipad mini is the right/perfect size especially if you like to watch content in bed
or move around your house and go outside etc…

I've noticed a bit of a drop off in battery life. Is a battery replacement possible on these models? I'd be happy with that if it didn't cost too much…

What is the battery life remaining?
if it is still close to 80%, then might not be worth replacing.

It is replaceable but need to check the prices..
apple will use official battery and will be more expensive..
other places likely use non official batteries..

if you got skills, then you can replace yourself to save money
but alot of people won't be able to do this.. and also might not be worth the hassle.

-the phone is too small to really get full enjoyment from the media and alot of text is small and can be hard to read
-the regular size ipad is too big to lie in bed to watch or to move it around the home or outside your yard etc…
it is more suitable to keep on a desk etc..

Agree with the size. I've got a ZUGU case which adds considerable weight but makes it basically indestructible.

yeah I got a few phones and few different big size ipads
but I would not mind getting an updated mini (if it there was a good deal).

At home, I would probably use the mini more than normal size ipads, cos it is more portable and lighter
but not too small like the phone screen size.

Got the link for the case?

Was just tryna self-justify handing it down to my kid so I can get a new toy. Lmao

          Up to you…
this device specs is good upgrade from the mini 6
but if you just using it for media then won't be as noticeable except for the larger screen size..

however will it be as nice to use for media consumption wherever you are (e.g lying in bed, moving around) etc?

Your kid will be happy with whatever ipad you give…
what ipad is your kid currently using?

The ipad mini would be big sellers if Apple sold it at this price.. ie $400+
so it feels overpriced compared to be being able to get this ipad 11…
but apple knows it is a niche size and they know that anyone that wants this size will be willing to pay double price for it.

          • @pinkybrain: Hey man thanks, not sure why you got downvoted for your info lol.

I'll probably keep it and end up replacing the battery.

Thing is I don't think the iPad Mini 6 has battery health compatibility. So I don't actually know the battery health. I replaced my iPhone 13 Mini battery for $149 a few months ago as it was on 78% battery and that was life changing - felt like a brand new phone. I may have to wait a bit longer for a battery replacement.

            Case is here: https://www.amazon.com.au/ZUGU-Case-Ultra-Protective-Cover/d…

    • +2

I have the iPad 6 mini too, battery life is not great these days. Last time I checked on the Apple site it’s around 190 to get battery replaced from them.

      https://www.apple.com/au/ipad/compare/?modelList=ipad-mini-6…

I don’t think it’s an upgrade to get the iPad, it has a bigger screen but it’s an inferior screen (colour wise). Performance bump is probably not noticeable for what you do and it’s heavier. So unless you’re after a bigger screen I’d stick with the iPad mini or go for a higher end model for another noticeable upgrade.

      • Yeah cheers. I really wish I could get a battery health check but that functionality isn't available on this device. $190 is pretty reasonable for an authorised/official battery replacement, especially for the dollar value I'll get for using it over its lifetime.

  • Thanks OP. Price beat worked at officeworks for $474.05.

  • Is there any indication Apple will drop their price to 499 as I’ve got heaps of discounted Apple credit I would like to use?

    • +2

I have lots of Apple credit as well and I really regret buying it even at 15% off. Apple is really bad at pricematching, so most times its cheaper to get it at JB or OW by doing pricematch plus 10% GC.

  • +1

Called Apple and the lowest they can do is $539.10 😅

  • Why do Apple insist on not putting a GPS chip on their WiFI models.

    I don't need cellular, but need GPS… But it's a $100's option :(

    • +4

Most likely gps is part of the 5g chip

    • I don't need cellular, but need GPS

why you need GPS on an ipad?
and the person below says, it is cos it is a part of the same cellular chip

if they made it a separate GPS model, now there will be 3 models, which further complicates the range..
the GPS model unlikely to get as much sales compared to the wifi (most sold) and cellular version so would end up probably more expensive than cellular model.

      • +1

        Electronic Flight Bag.

Android manufacturers seem to be able to put GPS chips in $80 Tablets, so having them standard in the WiFi models seems pretty logical.

        • -7

          Electronic Flight Bag.

what that has to do with wanted GPS on ipad?

Android manufacturers seem to be able to put GPS chips in $80 Tablets, so having them standard in the WiFi models seems pretty logical.

          then buy android

apple not gonna do, since most people who buy the wifi model don't to need GPS..
and it just adds to their cost of the wifi ipad, which they would then just increase the price even more and be close the price of the cellular model

          • +1

            @pinkybrain:

what that has to do with wanted GPS on ipad?

            Pretty much everything.

            • -5

              @Alpine58:

              Pretty much everything.

what are the examples of things you on ipad that need GPS?

        • -1

You don't rely on the inbuilt GPS for any safety critical tasks, like using it as an electronic flight bag. Bring along a bluetooth GPS with much better accuracy and reliability.

With Apple there's always a 'gotcha' with the base-spec models, something missing that most people would want, but can't have. Like the $2 hamburger without the cheese, versus the $4.50 cheeseburger.

  • Thanks OP. Purchased for $474.05

  • Was going to wait for gift cards, but didn’t think this will last, so jumped and grabbed one from Officeworks!!

    • -3

how much would the discounted gift cards be and which store officeworks or the good guys?

      • 15% off Celebration (can use at officeworks) has happened a couple times according to this. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/celebration-gift-card

I swear I saw a 15% post in 2024 and I didn't have enough cash so thought I could get it next time it happened.. 15% hasn't happened since. only 10%. 🙁

      • +2

Officeworks appears on the Ultimate gift card scheme and the Celebration gift card, and The Good Guys appears on the Ultimate gift card scheme and TCN multi-retailer gift card scheme. You can check the Discounted eGift Card wiki to see which gift card portals sell them at a discount with cashback everyday, but those rates are not great.

The more interesting deals are the limited-time deals offered at retailers. There are two upcoming deals on selected Ultimate gift cards at Coles and BIG W that can be used at Officeworks and/or The Good Guys, but there are no active deals for TCN multi-retailer gift cards that can be used at The Good Guys.

Thanks OP, just picked one up for $474.05. Apparently someone came in just before me and bought 3 😂.

      Get a blue case?

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought from Officeworks for $474.05 over the phone. Just need to pickup.

  • +1

anybody recommend a case that would survive a toddler?

    • +3

I’d go with an older model iPad lol

Copper cases and JETech kids cases have otherwise served me well in the past. Only one cracked screen in 6 years for my three kids. That crack was caused by me.

  • +1

What are peoples thoughts on this vs Tab S9 FE from Optus for similar price?
Longevity goes with the apple…probably smoothness too

Samsung has the S pen, expandable memory and is 5G.. good for travelling

Just a consumption tablet. Nothing crazy and basic gaming

    • +1

Probably also depends on what you have bought from each app store. You dont want to have to buy tablet movies / games all over again.

Main benefit of Samsung would be the laminated screen but thats about it. All other benefits go to Apple

  • +1

Thanks OP, price matched Officeworks too.

  • +2

Thanks OP, PB @ OW also, there so slow to check & almost make you feel like a criminal for asking them to PB, triple checking & even seeing which GG stores have stock in which suburb lol

    • +1

They do have a Karen energy at Officeworks.

On an unrelated point, do JB pricebeat other retailers or just pricematch?

      • +1

JB just match the price as far as I'm aware.

      • +1

        just pricematch

        This.

Quite a few people have access to 5% off gift cards though, so can get to the same price as long as the staff are willing.

IIRC, I had one interaction where they wouldn't price match and allow me to purchase with gift cards - so now if I am in store, I ask for a price match and only mention gift card when it comes to paying for it. Alternative is doing the price match online and doing click/collect in store. The online checkout lets you use whatever you want as payment.

    • +1

same with my local OW! initially they tried not to allow it since the model is for blue color they said. but i showed them it states Silver in the title of GG site. so they checked again. eventually got it for $481. they added the $8 shipping fee. but im happy with my purchase :)

  • +1

What are you all going with for a case?

I'm trying to decide from Amazon, will probably go ESR or JETech… Seems to be the best value. Almost fell off my chair when I saw the official Apple keyboard case for this was $400.

  • +1

Thanks OP price matched at my local Officeworks like the rest of the gang

See everybody at the next OzBargain meet up with our Silver iPads logged in :)

    • I have a 2017 ipad pro with the a10x. It doesn't struggle at all. I'm only looking for a new one because it no longer gets software updates but I have zero complaints about its performance 8 years later

      • Do you actually use it? Lol
My 2020 ipad pro has been very sluggish at very simple things like note taking and web browsing, especially after iOS 18.
a quick search though forums will show you that this is the case for many people.

while apple is good at supporting their hardware for long, many people miss the fact that new software releases are unoptimized for older hardware, resulting in horrible user experience.

        • So what do you suggest for an iPad under $500?

        • Could there be an issue with your device?
I have the 2018 pro and it hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. I'm using multi window note taking + browser with youtube playing in the back

    • My son has the 10th gen iPad which is even older and its fine. It plays roblox and minecraft fine, the 11th gen will be even better.

  • +3

    Thanks OP
    Another OW price match!

Was gonna get the Big W sale next week but this is perfect!!

OW wanting buyers to work for their price match rather than matching the price online

Or should I not risk and go with the Apple one at $139?

  • +1

Still rocking iPad 7th Gen here from 2019 still works fine with Stylus too

    Will wait for better price

  • Thanks OP, perfect timing as I started looking for iPads at the start of this week. Got mine price beat at OW after seeing the comments.

    Mother’s Day gift sorted.

Also where’s everyone getting their screen protector from? Any recommendation or just from Amazon?

    • +1

Aliexpress and it’s usually not that much slower delivery than eBay or Amazon these days.

      • +1

Yeah but not sure which one actually is the real deal as in quality wise. Where as Amazon usually spot on with the reviews

        • +1

You can probably buy a half dozen from ali and get a couple good ones for less than you’ll pay for the Amazon version.
If you buy the cheapest model
that’s what you’ll get on there these days .
You have to spend some time looking for their better quality stuff.
but if your a spendthrift such as myself,
Who will find the cheapest item version
in the back of a cubbord somewhere in Nanking and order everything ive found tlike it going out of style , you will end up with a big pile of shame looking back at you ,
but with a couple of diamonds in the rough that make up for it.

    • +4

I decided on these two products from ESR:

      Case: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0B6VP16FB
      Screen protectors: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CT4MK4QY

All up with Amazon discounts comes to $37.03 (5% off $40+ products + 15% off screen protectors).
