Thank you, finally managed to buy the drives I needed.

  • How many hours/spin ups are on these?

    • +3

the DOM in the photo is june 2021, so expect 3-4 years prior use. also note there is only a 1 year warranty

    • +1

I had 16,000 hours power on, 11 or so startups, on my last HC550 from ED. Had written big numbers though but headly read from. Must have been archive or backup in a past life.

Drive passed 100%, sounds healthy so overall very happy.

    • +1

My 8x18TB HC550 pulls are also 2021 (AUG 2021) with start/stop count between 10-16, load cycle around 1700, power on hours in the 26000-27000 (~3 years) range, max historical temperature all lower than 43 degrees. All wiped clean and sealed on delivery.

All drives has around 40G sectors written and read (512 byte per sector) in the GP Log. That's around 20TB of write & read, over 3 years of lifespan. Looks like chia mining retired drives. Waiting for badblocks scan now (will probably take 3-4 days).

      • After one pass of badblocks (0xaa) and an extended SMART test, 7 drives passed but one drive collected ~12k pending sectors and is waiting for ED's reply on a replacement.

Large drives are really painful to sweep or migrating data - more than 30 hours spent on badblocks scan (for one pass, which is one full drive write and one full drive read) and almost 20 hours to complete the extended SMART test.

        • Too bad one faulty. Waiting for 3 drives to arrive and do the test myself. Upgrading my unRaid server and thinking of upgrading my old qnap for backup, currently 4x 4tb. Might use more in unRaid and just crucial data backed up to wiped qnap. unRaid mainly media and some dockers such as home bridge, VM, Plex, *arr.

      • Got mine today. Doing a read write test. 1100 days or so on and 10 start stop. Couldn't see the read/write information in hdd sentinel.

        • run smartctl -ax /dev/sdx to read extended SMART logs.

          • @xmagic: Thanks, got it on win11 now so run them after read write is finished in a day or two

            • @Mikael: found extended in HDD sentinel. 17.73 TB Read 22.74 TB written.

Do the 12TB’s go on sale? What’s a decent price for those these days?

  • hmmmm people with NAS, is it highly recommended to keep the capacity of your drives to under 80% full? mine is 86% :(

    • +6

Not that I've heard, it's not a battery

      • ok then i will just keep sort and deleting the rubbish out, or keep holding as long as i can. the idea of spending $500+++ is making me sad
(i need at least 2 for RAID), soon i need to replace/upgrade my 14yo NAS too… another $800…

        • +2

Not sure what you use the NAS for but I work it out this way, if I was to have every streaming servicing thats like $100 a month. If I buy this HDD at the cost of only 2.74 months of streaming services, that HDDcan hold many many more shows and movies that I could watch in that time!

          • @thatsnasty: true thats very encouraging thanks.

          • +2

@thatsnasty: The problem is, I have many things not on streaming, also too content in its original form that hasnt been removed from streaming or edited to current societal standard. Also if you care about HD audio and higher Video bitrate then streaming is not your go to media source. TLDR; it depends if you are really particular or just a casual movie tv watcher.

          • @thatsnasty: Or you can spend $0 and just stream off Stremio

            • @krisspy: I thought you had to subscribe to a service for this?

              • @DigitalAnalog: nope, just a free account to stremio.
It's basically streaming off torrents instead of downloading the whole file.

You can subscribe to a debrid service if you want hosted files instead of torrents.

Some solid-state drives perform very poorly when full.

      For spinning disk:
      1. Generally not a problem, but heavy read/write loads on a nearly-full drive will suffer more fragmentation.
      2. If your NAS uses ZFS then try to avoid disks getting this full.

      • thanks lucky syno is not zfs

    • It depends on the filesystem.

btrfs/zfs yes otherwise you will get performance issues or potentially write issues (btrfs).

      • Simple fact. More full sectors = more fragmentation = more head/seek time = slower response.

Not sure for ZFS actually because defrag is built in.

  • I run a Plex server from my Mac mini. I just have two external hard drives plugged into a USB hub. It all works perfectly. What is the easiest way to use one of these drives in this same way? Is there an USB attachable enclosure I can buy?

  • Dang I just ordered 2x18TB from this site. Wish I waited for this deal, bit better value!

    • The 18TB pull is still in stock and is less than a dollar more expensive per TB than 16TB. So you're not missing much.

  • Thanks OP!
Missed one one the last post. Just ordered now. Just what my NAS needs to help be manage growing Plex:)

    • I've run a couple of these in a Synology rack mount NAS - Not detectably noisier than others, but they do seem to run hotter than other Toshiba enterprise drives I have.

  • are these noisy? I have 2 spaces in my PC thinking to put in a simple mirror RAID, but don't want to put up with something loud

    • Depends - some people are particularly sensitive to "Helium drive noise" as it has a different noise profile than air-filled drives.

    • -1

They are slightly louder than a desktop drive buy really not that noisy. Not like some Seagate that can sound like a jet taking off. Mine spin down when not in use so the system is only as loud as the case fan.

  • +1

Not refurbished or remanufactured by the OEM, but just 'used'? Not sure that's really a bargain tbh.

    • Honest question: Is there any real difference? Refurb still has the same moving parts right, they aren't replacing anything?

      • +1

Not night and day, but presumably remanufactured drives passed tests (or are new and just OEM's offloading non-discounted stock), and have OEM warranty.

      • +2

Recertified drives would come with new firmware (means also fully scanned and repaired if needed) which meets certain standards. What you get from RMA would also be recertified drives.

Refurbished (by seller) is just wiped and tested. Considered as less reliable than above.

  • -1

Suitable for a Reolink NVR? Stock one comes with 2TB

  • to wait till it goes down to the 250 / 15 per tb mark again or pull the trigger now…

    • I doubt it will happen in 2025, but who knows

  • Oos

  • Dang, gone already

  • +1

Shame theyve upped the proce so much.

Was $249 less than a year ago.

  • The preview photo looks like a blood bag

  • is there a reason the 18tb WDs aren't as popular?

    • 18TB a more common model in datacentres so probably not because it's less popular, but rather much more in stock.

Actually the WD 18TB pull has only 6 in stock.

  • Wow that was quick

    • +1

Perhaps they should remove "Large Qty In Stock!!!" from their listing.

  • damn missed, how many tbs ya'll need :(

    • Just had 2x Seagate 12TB die today.. Same batch

    • +2

They usually only have a few stock tbh, technically not even enough to have a post. I still like seeing them though

You can try to add like 100 to cart and it'll add the actual stock level, it's usually only 5-10 at a time except rare cases where they get a large batch.

p.s. note that 'used' are only 1 year warranty, refurbs are 3.

  • -3

I got the 18TB Seagate for $400 off eBay shipped. I think it's worth paying for Brand New.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/315040060206

    • +1

Are you sure they are really brand new? Like without SMART data tempering where Seagate HDDs are having issues with now. The eBay reseller you posted doesn't encourage confidence https://www.ebay.com.au/fdbk/mweb_profile?username=zenithspa…

    • +2

Zero chance this is brand new. Its all the same used drives with SMART data wiped.

At least ED is now cornered ro changing the label etching “Refurbished” on the drives.

    • +2

Some one break it to this guy softly..

Fun fact: brand new Exos are warranted for 5 years, not 1

      • Another fun fact: Warranted only from the seller you bought it from. So that's not worth so much as if the seller disappears so does any warranty for you. There is no consumer warranty from the manufacturer for an Exos drive as it's an enterprise drive. You as a consumer can't contact the manufacturer for warranty. The seller deals with the manufacturer for warranty. No more seller means no more warranty.

        • There is no consumer warranty from the manufacturer for an Exos drive as it's an enterprise drive. You as a consumer can't contact the manufacturer for warranty.

          No, this is completely wrong.

@hollykryten Is there some reason you keep coming into the hard drive threads and posting total nonsense ?

You can absolutely buy an Exos drive from an official reseller, as a consumer, and then warranty that drive through Seagate if it fails.

If you encounter a drive that you cannot warranty with the manufacturer, it's because that drive was sold as an OEM drive and/or was sold through a different region. It has nothing to do with the drive's "Enterprise" status.

The fact that this particular drive only has 1 year seller warranty, is either an indication that it's used or OEM or out-of-region or all three…

          • @Nom: I'm not talking nonsense. You will not get direct manufacturer warranty from Seagate with this purchase from this seller. Oh bit sir, East Digital is not an official Seagate reseller. So Seagate is not going to deal directly with you and your purchase.

East Digital is not listed as a trusted Partner (official reseller) in either the Australia, Hong Kong or China regions. So Seagate is not going to directly honour warranty from you as a consumer with this purchase from this seller. You have to seek the warranty through East Digital.

            https://www.seagate.com/au/en/where-to-buy/

It's why the product page says "1YR EastDigital Warranty" because they know that they aren't an official Seagate reseller and that you can't get direct manufacturers warranty from this purchase. It's sellers warranty only.

So how was i talking nonsense as i was right the whole time. No consumer warranty. And Seagate is not going to directly deal with you with this drive. It's not a consumer drive model. It's an Enterprise drive purchase so you have to RMA it as an Enterprise drive purchase. And good luck trying to get a direct RMA through a non official reseller purchase. East Digital is not an authorised Seagate seller.

            • @hollykryten:

You will not get direct manufacturer warranty from Seagate with this purchase from this seller.

              We are in agreement.

But that's not what you said in the post I was replying to. You implied the lack of warranty was because it was an Enterprise Exos drive.

Back in stock but says $285?
Got a 18tb on its way from them already.

That was shipped by Australia post.
Had in cart and now its $286. Must have us or different currency and live updates.

    • +1

yeah I've been watching them for the last couple of days since the last deal and grabbed a couple just before this deal was posted but the website clearly just seems to link to the exchange rate as the prices for the various drives was going up and down by a dollar or 2 numerous times over the last few days, even while still out of stock.

Never went anywhere near 285 though so that might have been a genuine price increase that's been applied to it.

      • Yes, they know this website and up it based on sales.

Each time its been posted its been increased.

        Started at $239 per drive.

        • Also seen price gone up when posted here. Ended up getting a 14tb instead because of it, and almost didn't get that either. First thought might've been from different pull but don't think that is the case.

          • +1

@Mikael: The rep used to post here.
That site is au targeted too.
            They know what theyre doing.

Im back to emailing them and buying using 'friends and family' on paypal.

            Screw the price hikes.

            • @MasterScythe: @MasterScythe cannot blame them. Example eBay cost even more. Says sold out on their "ozbargain" site on their 14tb but 95 in stock on eBay. Costing more there. $260 WITH gst. Guess they see first how eBay goes. Sending down a batch here (if not already here) Tiny bit cheaper because of gst workaround on the oz site and up the price gradually when people starting to buy them. I would do the same though lol. Waiting for the 14tb to be shipped OOS oz site. Almost bet be shipped in a day or two and stock from eBay goes down because they sent more down. Don't need many more I think perhaps a few more. Hopefully friends get a decent discount ;)

            • @MasterScythe: They are creeping up in price. Was going to get some more but wait instead. Not that desperate lol.

  • +1

I forgot they charge from HK … paying 3% international transaction fee on the card I used … dang.

    • Use an amex card next time.

      • My AMEX charges a fee too, don't have a CC with international transactions at the moment.

        • shouldn’t be, amex card doesn’t charge a 3% international transaction fee if the payment is processed in AUD.

  • Damn, I missed out :(

  • Anyone else still awaiting shipment from the last deal that was posted. Mine is not even shipped yet!

    • +1

Email them and find out whats going on - [email protected]

      • Thanks, just did.

        • Did you end up getting a reply. Also got a drive not shipped from from earlier in the week. First one took just a few hours. I have messaged them. Was 2 orders.

          • @Mikael: No, I did not get a reply. It has been two days. The drive is still not shipped.

            • @mightywhiteoak789: Same, nothing. Did email using their online messaging so not sure if they get it. Wait until Tuesday to see. They still got them in stock.
Just ordered another 18tb from them. The one waiting to get shipped is 14. The last 18 was shipped almost straight away. Perhaps they waiting for batch to be sent to Australia.

              • +1

@Mikael: They might be waiting for whatever. They can at least reply to the emails. This is my first order with them, not such a great experience so far. Let's see.

                • @mightywhiteoak789: Lot of good reviews. But as you said an email saying example, because of lots of sales we are working through the orders. Or saying waiting for the new shipment to be fully tested before shipment to end customer would be a good way to do it. I update here if I hear something.

  • +1

Have all the hard drives everyone ordered been shipped? Mine hasn't been shipped yet.

    • Still waiting. Emailed them and no reply. First one that I ordered the 28th 18tb (day before this deal was shipped same day) 2 more orders after not shipped. Waiting for 16 and 14

    • Not yet, I emailed right after my order to ask to change payment method/change order to 4 drives instead of 2 but no response.

    • Mine haven't shipped either.

Not worried they were pretty quick shipping them out last time and more importantly was impressed with how they handled the returns. If they haven't shipped end of week might cancel the order as I didn't notice until afterward that this listing doesn't have 100% health on it like the other ones do

  • +1

Has anyone heard or had items ship? Its been 9 days, 7 emails and NOTHING. Not a reply. Never had this issue in the past with East Digital.

    • +1

      Nope, radio silence too

    • +1

Same. You would think they could've put on their site if there was a delay with shipment or something. Guess lot of oz bargain emails for them to go through.

      • The order from 28th got shipped same day. 18tb (day before this deal). Arriving here tomorrow.

    • No response, no shipping email, was thinking of doing a charge back soon if they don't respond. But since alot in the same boat I will play the waiting game

      • +1

Mine is with PayPal so might give to end of this week, if no updates from here anything is moving i cancel my orders. Or at least on their site should say something if having some issues.

        • Yeah exactly, their shopify site was just slapped together though so I get the cheap prices have a cheap site haha
Need to work on their communication, doesn't sound like it will take much longer though
