  • Can you CHOOSE your own phone number with AldiMobile?

  • Wow the international rates are actually very good. 10CPM to about 20 major countries.

  • Ok firstly i am with kogan and i did run a speed test on kogan mobile and optus side by side… Optus was 0.35 mb/s whereas kogan being telstra was 6 mb/s … Mind u i am in a blackepot for optus and vodafone services

Secondly the transfer time has decreased massively i ported my number from optus to kogan on a sunday arvo and monday morning i got an email from kogan saying its done … It between 4-24 hrs

Thirdly if u r stuck in a contract with a service provider all you have to say to them is that you work in the area where their service is crap… Pick up the area from their coverage map anf they will have to waive the cancellation fees. Or youcan say you are moving to a new address where their service would be crap thus no coverage. :) works with optus and voda.. They might ask u for the handset return

Or youcan say you are moving to a new address where their service would be crap thus no coverage. :) works with optus and voda.

I find that hard to believe… you moving doesn't invalidate the contract you signed

  • It doesn't, but it is basis for getting out of the contract without paying the cancellation fees. Just go to the TIO and the telco will respond quickly as they are bleeding customers everyday. I've done this twice, once with Vodafone back in 2011 and recently with Virgin (Optus).

    • Would appreciate more info on how to do this, as I've had billing issues with Vodafone and they just refer me to stores, which are no help. Is there a standard form or website you used? Thank you in advance.

  • Just tested the speeds with my HTC one xl on aldi mobile. get 6Mbp in brisbane

Aldi sim took about 2 hours to activate

    • Yeah, my sim probably took a bit less to activate
All of a sudden I have full bars reception and blistering fast d/l compared to optus
Unfortunately, have to pull the sim out and use optus credit up, soon Aldi soon.

Im On The Tpg $15 a month no Contract Plan. With $450 in credit to use Internationally too.
    Nothing beats that yet!

    • Depends whether you need phone coverage or not. Not everyone lives inner city

    • TPG rate is essentially 20 time more than this plan rate + 35c flag fall per call mean your $450 is only $20 worth of credit normally. You get what you pay for.

  • Anyone know if the data will work for BBM/email, etc. for Blackberry's? Thanks!

  • I'm on Amaysim atm and thinking about switching. Do you guys think that Aldi will be way better for Internet speed? CBD/Eastern suburbs for Optus against Telstra. Just shot that I have so many Amaysim vouchers left….

    • Yes, my wife moved from a personal Telstra plan to a work Optus plan and she hates the slowness on Optus.

1: Comparing Optus and Telstra doesn't really work as it is location dependant.

2: That is a dual band phone, what frequencies does yours support?

      • Yes and they were both done in the same location within 500 metres of a telstra and optus tower.

        Frequency from the website
        GSM..850/900/1800/1900
        UMTS..850/2100/GPRS Class 12 (4+4)/EDGE Class 12/HSDPA Speed 3.6Mbps

        • Optus will be severely handicapped by lack on UMTS 900. If you can, compare with a UMTS 900 phone at the same location.

        • -3

And why would I want to do that?
This is the phone I have, it is pretty silly to compare to a phone I do not have.

        • Because if you do, it will produce more accurate speed comparisons between the two major carriers for the majority of people who will use phones set on the 900MHz frequency.

  • Can anyone please confirm if i can keep my number if i move from vodafone prepaid and can you internet tether with aldi prepaid using an iphone 4.

    • +1

Yes you can transfer your number from post or prepaid (may have a cost for postpaid if under a contract from the losing telco)

(it asks when you activate the sim- are you bringing a number from another telco ?)

and someone can correct me if i'm wrong but if the iPhone is jailbroken you can tether…

      • iPhoens (and now iPads) can tether without a JB, unless you're still on 3.1.3 lol

        • +2

They use a different form of tethering to Android phones. Apple calls it Personal Hotspot. It gives telcos control over tethering, so they can charge an extra fee for it if they want to.

Android tethering looks just like the phone was consuming data itself so it doesn't need the telco to enable/disable anything extra. Jailbroken iphone tethering works like this.

  • Their AYG rates equals Amaysim for local rates, beats Amaysim for expiry period, and I haven't compared international rates, but I hardly make any international calls. The $15 for 2GB data pack is cheaper per MB than the Amaysim but more expensive over 30 days. I wish they had $7.50 or even $8 for 1GB, I don't need that much data.

One drawback is there is no international roaming, which might be an issue if I want to access bank accounts that send you a code by SMS, and also for casual SMS from home. But a cheap SIM might take care of that.

Given the speed report by Davros above I might try it for a secondary phone+number I have. I don't suppose Aldimobile will have intro specials, just normal low prices like the supermarkets. :)

  • thanks snappy .. iphone is not jail broken will that be an issues to tether?

  • How long before the 3G or mobile data will be active once you activated the sim card ?

I have been waiting for 4 hours, but no mobile data yet.

    • Found out that I need to manually set the APN setting.

Working fine now. Getting around 6.5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload.

  • While not a facebook user as such I did use the "messenger" part of it regularly as a free sms between family and friends when using Amaysim.

    Aldi has no such feature.

  • I got a $5 sim starter pack loaded with $5 credit from aldi to try it out later on. i have to use up all my telstra sims first lol. Just wondering if there is a expiry date on the starter pack or a time you have to activate it by? how long will the sim remain activate without recharging it?

  • Can anyone who got this please confirm if you can internet tether using an ihpone .. its the only thing stopping me from buying a sim today and letting vodafone burn in hell

  • Mate for $5 why not buy one and try it.
Unless of course iphones have some silly shit going on that prohibits tethering, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

  • i know optus will not allow tethering .. the provider can stop it .. its bullshit im paying for the data why does it matter how i use it …. rant rant rant lol

  • I am currently with Amaysim (optus) and have no issues
But I am using an android phone which is why I asked if its an apple thing.

  • It's all so confusing for my good self. I much prefer the phones that ring, long..long…short…long…short

    • +2

      Mate, thats morse code

  • Well i just signed up.. Took 2 hours to port my number from Live Connected.. Speeds are about double and signal levels are so far so good..
Make sure you manually enter the APN stuff if you want to connect

Went for Aldi over Kogan due to his dodgy business practices and lack of support when something goes wrong

  • I am on the optus mobile plan until 2/4/1013. i would like to retain the number when the contract ends. I was wondering when would be the time to port the number over the Aldi pay-as-you-go plan? I don't want to pay optus for breaking the contract before 2/4 and don't want to lose the number when the contract ends (what happens to a mobile number when it is not tied up with a contract?). Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks a lot.

    • I would port the number AFTER the end of your contract. You will be on a monthly basis with Optus then.

At worst you'll pay an extra month to Optus, but they may refund you unused portion of the month if you are lucky.

    • what happens to a mobile number when it is not tied up with a contract?

They will often keep charging you the very high amount until you realise you are getting ripped off and complain.

  • I tried to get a SIM from Richmond Aldi in Victoria and they said they didn't have them anymore :-(

  • I am using an ALDI sim in my unlocked Telstra pre-paid dongle right now.

I can't see a difference in speed. On OzSpeedTest I am getting 950kb/s down.

Only catch was, I ordered the 30$ PAYG plan sigh didn't have the 35$ plan in the list.

The call center was friendly but told me there was nothing that they could do, no 5gb data for me this month.

  • Just rang Aldi Mobile 1300 number. On hold for 40 minutes. And the lady on the phone said that iPhone Personal Hotspot is not available on their plan. Can anyone confirm if that is correct?

    • Probably. See previous comments in this thread about how Apple designed iOS so that telcos can control whether you can tether. No such problem on Android.

    • +1

I tested an Aldi $15 pre-paid sim in my iPhone 4S today. I was able to setup the personal hotspot on the iPhone, connect to the hotspot with my PC and browse the internet using my PC.

      • If it works for your PC does that mean it will work for the iPad too?

        • I would assume so. Personal Hotspot is either allowed or not.
It doesn't make sense to allow some devices to use tethering and not others.

  • I am just finished porting my number from TPG to ALDI,the only reason for me to do this is the huge diff with mobile internet connection.

    In metro area,TPG 300KB/S,ALDI 800KB/S;

In my working place(indoor),TPG usually no signal or 10KB/s,ALDI is still 800KB/S!!!

I used up 100MB which come with starter-kit in a work shift, hoho. That's never happened on TPG mobile network.

  • Will the sim work in a device locked to telstra?

  • i just ported my vodafone postpaid to the new aldi sim i bought but why its prepaid? do i have to recharge every month? there is no option for postpaid auto debit??
and also what happens when u recharge $35 unlimited? do you get $5 deducted from the free $5 balance on the new sim?

  • I just bought two of the $5 starter packs from Aldi(currently using Woolworths pre-paid $29 for 45 days)and keeping my current mobile number. I use my mobile for a LOT of apps, FB etc.. I'm now going to the Woolworths site to re-check on what data I currently get to compare the two… I hope this new Aldi pre-paid package will do me?

    • If you have lots of sessions with your apps, then you are looking at using 1MB of data for each session, this is the killer. Telcos charge in blocks of data with a minimum chunk per session…. some plans have 1KB, others 100KB, it could be anything — this is what you need to know.

For Aldi / Kogan and Amaysim, when using Telstra network ALL charge in 1MB blocks (minimum charge).

What is the session size for Woolies plans? NB: It may differ from plan to plan as well.

    • If you have a high quota, say anything > 200MB and normal usage, just checking your mail or searching for something now and then and not watching Youtube, then it's actually better to leave the mobile data on rather than switching it off and on frequently and incurring lots of sessions. When I was on a data pack or one of those trial SIMs with 1GB or more, I could only run up about 200-300MB of usage in a month and had to make a large download to use up the remainder. This despite the 1MB session rounding.

Of course if you are in an area of high dropouts, or travel through train tunnels often, you would incur lots of sessions.

  • Does anyone know if this would work in a Telstra Turbo 3G USB modem? Currently have one being used on Telstra prepaid broadband using the 12 gig with 365 day expiration, but at $15/2 months this works out a bit better. Just not sure whether the device needs to be unlocked or not.

  • Been waiting almost 3 hours for a port from Live Connected.

I may have missed it on one of the other pages but it seems Kogans unlimited isnt actually unlimited and blames Telstra.
    http://www.news.com.au/technology/biztech/kogan-mobile-kicks…

ONLINE retailer and telco reseller Kogan Mobile has been accused of kicking a customer with high internet usage off its mobile phone plan.
Kogan Mobile has been offering unlimited calls and texts and 6GB of data for $29 on its prepaid mobile plan which launched in December.

But yesterday it pulled the plug on Brisbane customer Joel Campbell claiming in an email (which has been cited by news.com.au) that he was not using its mobile service for "personal use" and gave him 90 days to find a new phone service.

    • Kogan another Dodgey company!! Since wen does "UNLIMITED" means u cant use too much???

Hope Aldi Mobile isnt like that

      • It's an unfortunate problem of "unlimited", "fair use", "third parties" and "personal only" — all combined to potentially give you hell. The same can occur with ANY product that is offered via 3rd party and almost all of those potential problems/issues exist with 1st party as well.

Reading the story to the Kogan case, it would seem that, [mind you I don't like Kogan for all sorts of reasons], it isn't directly Kogan's fault … in this case.

At the end of the day, we need fair and where the telcos can gouge for "business services", they will often do so. Of course that is made worse when the actual product isn't properly differentiated at the provisioning level.

      • Hope Aldi Mobile isnt like that

I thought both Kogan and Aldi are reselling ispONE's service (who resells Telstra's). If as Kogan claimed in the article that it's the reseller's problem, then I can't see Aldi Mobile being any different.

Unless the fault is not entirely at the reseller level…

    • +1

      And the follow up.
      http://www.news.com.au/technology/biztech/kogan-mobile-may-b…

…Kogan's fair-use policy was changed last week to stipulate that its customers could not use more than 400MB of data per day.

…Elise Davidson from ACCAN said Kogan was "exercising poor customer service".
She said that Kogan's website made it "impossible" to make a complaint about service.

      • No changes like that from Aldi yet.

  • The Aldi's plan seems a great deal… i need 4 of them to cover for the Vodafail services that has practically no coverage outside of metropolitan Melbourne, which they failed to tell me when they asked me to resign up with Vodafail after my Three services expired.
