I've got to admit, this is a really good price.
Yes it's not the greatest brand, but it is still a 1080p LED 50" television for $500.
The fact that it has delivery included is just the cherry on top. Not bad.

    • +2

      Plus 3-yr Warranty

  • Rep - any Changhong 55" deal?

    • Couldn't see a Changhong 55" ?

  • +3

Changhong have had some 'interesting ads' on TV recently.

    http://mumbrella.com.au/chinese-electronics-brand-changhong-…

  • +1

Looks tempting. My 5 year old Samsung 50" plasma started dying last night. With the 3 year warranty could be a nice interim TV while I wait for OLED to become available and affordable.

  • +3

8 star energy rating is impressive

  • -5

wow! theres a lot of voting in this bargain

  • +1

What's the channel change lag like (my current Chinese brand is quite slow)

  • Any reviews on this model anywhere ???

dont seem to be able to find any

  • +10

I know this is Ozbargain and so a tough crowd but this looks a very good deal for an entry level priced TV on paper.

Specs are good. 3yr warranty. Good highly reputable bricks and mortar distributor and free delivery. Without shopping around I'd imagine to find better you'd have to pay $300+ atleast. Little downside at this price mark.

IMHO too many folks are judging this on the brand but thats kinda silly given so much of the Electronics industry (as with the rest of the world economy) has relatively anonymous companies churning out items for 3rd parties who have an established brand and thus a badge is added on and the item all of a sudden is desireable to consumers.

Honestly looks a pretty good deal to me - of course no substitution for viewing IRL as who know the remote GUI may suck or slow channel changes etc but hard not to + vote this one on the info at hand. :-)

The 3yr warranty really is the kicker here - as cheap and 'good looking on paper' TV's have been on here often enough but if it is a dodgy build this is your safety net - plus if you have a platinum CC or similar you might even get another yr free.

As others said most branded names only give 12mths warranty and so purchasing extended warranty on top would be $150+ by itself. I'm not in the market for a TV but if you're not needing a worldbeater this is a pretty good deal on paper. :-)

    • -8

      cool story

    • I think the biggest thing with the break out brands is the quality control. 3 year warranty is great, but not if it constantly needs fixing. Not saying Chang hong has this, but that's the general impression I get with the new brands. (New bike brands like Hyosung, LG back in the day)

It makes it harder to decide when the product is actually okay or not as well because even if its a small percentage of after market failures, you can bet your ass those people will scream and shout on the net.

But for $500 for 50 inch even if it breaks down completely in 2 years, you can probably replace it with a TV with better features later on.

      • "but not if it constantly needs fixing."
Sounds like my old panasonic plasma… :-(

  • +6

    thats it, Im buying one!

Too cheap for specs to pass up.

  • Only real questions:

1 - 24p support? Even at that price, this should be a given - ?

2 - What panel? LG? Samsung? Is it A- grade or lower?

Really, I don't care about brand anymore, just features and price. Name or no name, if it does the job, how can you complain?

  • Very tempted, anyone bought this, please share experience, especially the power on and channel changing time, also how the color reproduction and response time when watching sports/ action movies.

  • Can it record the TV shows with the TV off like Samsung? Cheers

    • I don't think samsung can record shows with TV off ?

      • I have the series 7 plasma and it can record whilst it is off.

        • I think you mean standby. Unless of course it has batteries.

        • +1

Sorry, yes I meant standby. Anyway, bought one let's see how it goes

  • Does anyone know what the DLNA support is like on this model? Tried searching but not coming up with any info on it. Thanks!

  • Sooo tempted if only there was a review somewhere

  • In comparison to the LG that was on special last year, which is better?

  • +11

So many ignorant responses here regarding brands.

Changhong is one of the relatively few manufacturers in the world that make their own panels. They have the market share, R&D and purchasing power to make all their own electronics. So to answer one person's question on what panel is it - it's a Changhong panel.

Outside of the big boys (Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, I hope I haven't forgotten others), Changhong would be the only one big enough to manufacturer their own panels AND make their own complete TV sets. If there was such a thing, I would sit them between a Tier 1 and a Tier 2 brand.

This particular model offered is their latest generation panel, A+ grade, and with edge-to-edge LED backlighting (which, again, is the latest LED backlighting module on the market), WiFi and SMART capabilities. Their brand awareness in Australia isn't great, so it is a good time to take advantage of their pricing level before they become recognised as a true Tier 1.

    • +6

So many ignorant responses here regarding brands.

You'll get used to that around here. I wouldn't bother trying to get through to them with logic either, you're flogging a dead horse there!

There some extremely intelligent, erudite individuals on OzB…unfortunately, they are vastly outnumbered by mobs of muppets who only know what small-minded marketing hype has told them to parrot ad nauseam.

    • Get off your high horse dude.. ,btw Sony doesn't make there own panels any more

    • +1

Would you like to link to anything backing what you've said? (In regards to "A+ grade panel" for example)

  • +2

If anyone gets a chance to play with this in store, could you please post up your experiences. Along with quality of the picture, things like time it takes to turn on; how the friendly the remote UI works (also does the remote interfere with other TV's; and whether the EPG is decent.

    Much appreciated,

    • And while you're there, could you check out the picture and audio quality of the $249 Changhong LED29A6500 29" please? Our lounge room is way too small for a 50" TV. The smaller TV hits the sweetspot for price and connectivity options, but I'm a few thousand kms too far from Bing Lee to check out how it looks and sounds. Your opinion of the 29" would be very much appreciated.

      • +1

No such thing as too small. I have a 51" in my bedroom and its great!

  • I bought a Changhong 32" lcd tv from Bing Lee about 2 years ago for the bedroom. From new it had a really loud annoying buzzing noise to the audio (mosquito sound) which was annoying in a bedroom environment (would have been ok anywhere else).

Apart from the noise it lost its picture completley after 14 months with just a green screen showing. Chucked it in the bin as it only had 12 months warranty.

    • I get this buzzing noise on a similar vintage Changhong forty-something inch too. Will check the model when I get home and edit this post (as long as nobody replies to this post).

Also mine flickers a bit when changing resolutions on HDMI when launching games on my PS3, but I don't mind that.

      • Mine's CHL4243D.

  • all these upvotes are great guys but where are the reviews and pictures or at least proof of picture quality vs well known brands?

  • Just got my invoice.

    PARRA.VS.DOGS.14-03.DBL.PASS

    Free footy tickets too?

Please be aware that, with just 50Hz refresh rate, hundred of thousands of people complained about motion sickness/headache while watching on a screen larger than 40/46". This is 50" with just 50 Hz. You must have at least 100/120 Hz to cure motion sickness/headache to some extent. Better to go for 200/240 Hz TVs. Also the response time is very slow of 8 ms. I am concerned about peoples' health while watching this TV. $500 may be looking good at this time, but you will either be returning it back or throwing out because of above reason.
Just google motion sickness with LCD TV. You will see hundreds of shocking stories. Good luck.

  • +2

I had a Changhong TV for about 2 weeks before I sold it on to someone. Total POS

    • Why?

  • Isn't Bing Lee's motto, everythign is negotiable. I might be being a tight a$$ but has anyone tried???

  • Thanks robb. That is proof enough to stay clear of the brand.

  • +1

I've just been on the Bing Lee website and used the Live Chat option to speak to a rep.

They've tried using a USB stick and playing and AVI file which worked, no word on MKV. They tried 3.5" externals which DON'T work. Said welcome to try in store if anyone wants to.

  • Never seen so many replies in relation to a deal on a Chinese branded TV…

    • good deal maybe ?

      • Yet to be determined…

        • let u know in a couple of days

  • Hi Rep,

Can the delivery be postponed 2 or 3 days?

    Thanks

    • Berlindut
We can arrange for delayed delivery. Just add that to the notes in the checkout

  • +2

Thanks for the post. This is a good deal. I have looked at Changhong TVs before. One trick is to go to a large TV shop and compare the picture quality without looking at the brand names. Changhong stacks up very well against the others. At this price you can't go wrong.

  • +3

Whoa, the Changhong website just got hacked and suspended. Someone really didn't like this deal. Google is now listing the site as 'This site may be compromised.'

    https://www.google.com.au/search?q=changhong

    • LMAO!

  • +2

Bought one from binglee bankstown and they gave me free ticket for next bulldog game but i gave it to the guy who sold me the tv because no one i know like football.

  • I can confirm this tv plays mkv videos , but i could not get it to show fullscreen only small box but did not have time to play with it that much.

  • +2

hmm, wonder why they did not put user manual on the website for people to check more info before buying …

  • +3

Where is JINNY1 to talk trash on this deal like he does on every other TV deal?

Oh, back in the Penalty Box again. You may as well call that home, Jinny.

  • so for $500, comparing this to the recent branded big screen plasmas from LG and Samsung.. the only advantage I see is wireless + PVR.. still quite a decent deal though

    • it's LED, the LG was Plasma. So u can decide…

    • The Samsung PS51E550 plasma has wireless and pvr, I have one, very good TV. I would choose it ahead of this any day. The smart features work really well, it plays pretty much all file types off usb, and PQ is very good……..600Hz vs 50Hz on this Changhong.

      • Not sure if it hurts your electricity bill if you leave it on 12hrs a day.

        • Do your research buddy, you will find that real world power use of newer plasmas is only slightly more than leds…. maybe $20 per year.

        • +1

That is if you dont have $0.47 solar feed in tariff.

        • -1

This Changhong is noted as having a power consumption of only 85W! That is great. The above Samsung plasma has a max power consumption of 325W, which is still pretty good for a plasma as some older models were using over 500W. A quick calculation on an Energy website shows that running 12hrs a day for a year, the plasma will cost around $310 extra in electricity over this LED.

        • Firstly 325W is the max power consumption, if the screen was white all the time(impractical) . Secondly it is impractical to base someone's habit of watching TV as 12 hours/365 days a year as I find that one the higher side of the scale.

        • I average 6 to 7 hours on a weekday and around 10 hours + per day on the weekend

        • +1

Can you actually get out of the sofa? Thats way too much tv!

        • +1

These rates are based on 10 hours a day -
          Samsung PS51E550 is $156 for 1 year.($0.43 a day)
          Changhong LED50B2500i is $63 for 1 year.($0.17 a day)

Based on my rate of $0.244 kWh.

    • The world is already flooded with rebranded chinese products.

      • -6

        Wrong!
I toured through Asia earlier in the year - most Asian countries REFUSE to use Chinese products - Even the Chinese avoid using their stuffs. They didn't believe me when I told them that Oz is flooded with Chinese craps. They laughed and said "You have too many cheap arses over there!" I guess they were right. lol….

        • +3

I wonder if you have done enough surveys on a reasonable number of consumers to come up with this conclusion. Hope it is not based on only a few people's opinions.

  • Great price for a 50 incher. I don't care what files it can play. Hook it up with my WD Live Streaming Media Player and I think I'm set for life here. :D I got lots of thinking to do. :)

  • +3

    Changhong is not bad.

We have a TV running from 1987 and still working perfectly.

You will get worth every penny you paid,

Just don't compare with a 1500-2000 TV,this brand is focus on country market aim on cheap and reliable

Just wondering if anyone has found the manual for this online, or if the rep could make it available.
Looks like a great deal, but the manual is very helpful in making a purchasing decision. Even finding a picture of the reverse side of this TV is proving to be a challenge.

  • +13

So I had a look at one of these in store.

The design is decent and minimal. The Bezel and overall panel is quite thin. Buttons on the bottom right are the older style push button ones that are exposed and make it look a little cheap.

Image quality was pretty good considering the price. Brightness, contrast were all good. When I compared it to a few other LCD displays that were considerably more expensive touting 200Hz and other fancy technologies there were little to no differences with motion, and overall picture quality. I was able to tune the picture to my tastes and the image quality was acceptable. FTA picture quality was below average compared to other units beside (other units handled non HD content better) but I tested some 720P and 1080P files and they looked great alongside the more expensive models on display.

Where this TV falls short is the OSD and EPG - It's completely minimal and pretty darn ugly. Its functional but that's about it. Changing channels is quite fast and I noticed little to no lag navigating menus.

    • Sorry for being silly, but what is FTA, OSD and EPG?

      • FTA: Free to Air, the tv channels you get via your antenna
OSD: On Screen Display, the menu system of the tv
EPG: Electronic Program Guide, on-screen tv guide for digital channels.

      • FTA - Free to air channels, Channel 9, 7, 10 etc.
EPG - Electronic Programming Guide. Shows the menu on screen of channels and what shows are on at what time etc etc.
OSD - Not sure about this one, but I'd think it is on-screen display quality.

      • FTA - Free To Air
        OSD - On Screen Display
        EPG - Electronic Program Guide

      • Ah, thanks heaps! So what was your 'verdict' btw?

    • Thanks for the report, that's quite helpful. I think this could be a good living room tv for the parents, they don't use the menus or EPG and dad is quite the channel surfer.

    • I just took delivery today. I'm disappointed that the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) is rather poor.

Instead of a full screen of items, only a limited set of programs are presented on the left hand side of the screen. In addition, it is very difficult to surf the guide to look for programs to record. For instance, if it is 3pm, you can only see what programs are on at 3pm tomorrow, or 3pm the day after etc. There is an alternate EPG mode where you can look at what programs are on for a single channel.

I noticed that Changhong's .CN site provides an Android SDK for download. Perhaps there's an App Store in the offing. I wonder if we'll ever get a firmware upgrade that provides a more satisfying EPG experience.

  • At the end of the day is about whether the company who made these TV have good quality control or not. If it is backup by large company like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung & LG then I am more comfortable with it even if its made in China.

I have no confidence on this brand, never heard of it to start with.

However, I am sure a lot of people will still think its a bargain depending on what they use it for and who is using it.

    • +5

I have a 4 year old 46' Samsung LCD that recently got discolouration in the top quarter of the screen making viewing unbearable. Its out of warranty now so its basically a $2k hunk of junk (warranty was 3 years back then). I used to always think buying brand name televisions was the way to go, but now I see no benefit, especially since they only come with 1 year warranty these days. Why pay a premium for a brand name when they can't guarantee it will last beyond 3+ years? I would much rather risk $500 for this Changhong than $1k+ for a Samsung model.

  • So why are there differences between free to air but not file playback? Surely the digital signal decoders don't vary that much of at all?

    • +1

I am far from an expert in this area, so this is in uninformed laymans version of my theory. Please feel free to shoot me down! I suspect it's because FTA is generally lower resolution (576 from memory). This means that a Full HD TV (1080) has to either (a) produce a blocky image (where 2-4 adjacent pixels are all displaying the same) or (b) "iron out" the gaps between known pixels by taking an "educated guess" what they should be. Most TVs attempt the latter, but with varying degrees of success. Considering the number of pixels and the number of frames per second this is quite a lot of image processing to be doing on the fly, so it's not surprising that it's imperfect, especially in "cheaper" models.

    • The digital TV tuners use different hardware video decoders from the file playback decoders/GPU. I am suspecting they skimped out on the digital tuner.

  • +4

Just got back from Rhodes. The guy said he could make it $475 delivered with the free eels vs bulldogs tickets for 14/3. So an extra $24 off. Might be something to go off if someone wanted to 'negotiate'.

    • +4

To BingLee Rep, can we negotiate the price to $475 with you here in ozb as well?

    • Could you please post link of the photo of the receipt for $475 or email it to [email protected] ? Thanks

  • Online Chat agent @ Bing Lee just confirmed free shipping to Melbourne too! Will talk to the Boss for permission tonight.

At this price, you could stack 4 together and create your 200 inch TV wall :)

    • No matter how you stack them, you get a screen less than 200".

      • Diagonally ;)

or stack 9 together in a 3x3 matrix which only costs $4500 :P
