Wow monster of a phone at such a low price !
Wonder how much the S4 will cost now with them

    • +2

Yes its a monster phone alright. Very cheap for such an excellent phone.

      • +12

        Will it blend?

        • Downvoters don't approve of your cultural reference!!!

        • +2

          Don't breathe this.

      • +1

I bought the unlocked Telstra Xperia Z from JBHifi with local warranty for $590.

Definitely a great phone, but has its niggles as does every phone.

The screen is awesome although lacks a bit in the viewing angles from the side.

        Highly recommended!

    • +3

I think the S4 will still have a ludicrous price as it's kinda the main competitor for the iPhone hence it gets an equivalent price.

It's bizarre as the specs on the Z are as good if not better. Yay for competition!

      • It's bizarre as the specs on the Z are as good if not better

        I wish you were right.

  • +9

    Grey import though….

    • +6

Nah, only comes in black :P

  • wow.. seeing a great phone which was released less than a month a go had significantly dropped in price (although it's grey imports).. making me nervous in deciding to buy a new phone

    • +13

Don't buy a newly released phone. Wait a few months and get one that has significantly dropped in price…

      • it has dropped from 750'ish at launch..quite hard to drop below this price anytime soon for a flagship phone. prob part of sony's marketing strategy, htc one and s4 coming out.

        • +1

It was never really at $749 though, only Sony tried to sell it/tricked pre-order customers to pay that price.

        • Sony Xers were offered $597 or so at the end of February - for Xperia Z at that time, that would've been a great price.

        • Sony Xers can still get it for $597.30

  • Not getting paid until next week. How long do you think the sale will last for?

    • Its not delivered for 2-3 weeks, considering the drops in price already i would be either waiting 1 week for price to drop further. That way you can get an Aus stock one for similar price.

      • +5

I think that is their standard listing of 2-3 weeks. It's the same for every phone listed on the site so you'll most likely get it before then.

        • What makes you think you will get it before then?

        • +3

Well, I bought phones from Kogan before and they arrived within a few business days, although it said 2-3 weeks. People from OB had similar experiences.

        • Okay thats very encouraging, any of them new release phones

        • i got 3 windows phones and they had the same 2-3 week shipping period, got to me within a week. I wont say this will be the case for every transaction but just thought i'd share my experience.

    • Not sure how long it's on sale for. Although it does say "limit of 1 per customer"

      • I think this is so people don't complain that they get hit with GST as buying 2 is more than $1000.

    • +1

On the email says ends midnight today

      • Cheers, thanks.

      • Thanks, I should put an expiry date on this then

    • +7

You have to wait to get your pay to afford it and you are going to spend almost 600 bucks on a flagship phone? Wtf?

  • +3

Hahah, multi touch, up to 10 fingers. In what case would you need to 10-finger multitouch?

    • +22

Well…oh, you mean on the phone.

    • +4

It's handy for games that require rapid touching. Even tho at most 2 taps, allowing for ten avoids errors.

    • +4

With a decent piano app, this practically replaced my 12 foot Steinway concert grand ;)

  • & don't forget in addition to being water proof … its also Chocolate Proof :)..

    I will buy when i see its Alcohol/Margarita proof .. lol .. :)

  • how does this compare to NOTEII 4G? I'm not sure if Sony is as good as Samsung when it comes to software features like smartstay etc…

    • The Sony has a different screen… the Note II would look better, brighter, more colourful but the Sony has a much higher resolution & PPI (720x1280 v 1080x1920, 265ppi v 441ppi) and the CPU/GPU on the Sony is considerably better.

    • Screen size and resolutions are different, so it comes down to what you want to do with the phone. Games? Work? Pictures?

XperiaZ is probably better on games because of it's CPU/GPU specs (see tantryl's link below)
Note is probably better on work based on screen size and preinstalled softwares. Also firmware updates more readily than Sony.

using GSMarena's camera compare tool, details in XperiaZ's pictures are blurred and colour is a tad off (greenish) compared with iPhone5 and Samsung Galaxy flagships:

Very good price, for an excellent phone, just ordered one cant wait for it to arrive.

  • +2

Great price for a great phone. Best android device out at the moment. Bought just last week from JB for $624 so this is an amazing price.

  • Will this work in the states for lte?

    • Not sure, you need to check what frequency the carrier uses for LTE in the US. In Australia it's 1800

      • Unfortunately there's two different 1800 bands for LTE. US one is different.

        • so I take it as a no? tt lte in the states was 700/2100…

  • Ahh so tempting!!

I'll pounce if it drops to $500 delivered. When is the Galaxy 4 due out guys?

    • Yeah and when it reaches that price you'll change your mind and pounce when it hits $400.

    • -4

Parramatta Harvey Norman has XZ for $485 cash price.

      • +4

        receipt?
        is it the 4g one?
xperia z 4g for 485is great, you'd be a legend if you could get a receipt

        • -4

There is no 4g version of this phone!

        • Read the specs. This one is clearly 4G.
          4G Network LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 - C6603

        • +1

All the Xperia Z comes with 4G as standard (there is no 3G only XZ phone).

        • Typo, mean 3g :-)

      • +3

There is no Parramatta Harvey Norman…do you mean Auburn HN on Parramatta Road?

      • more like $585

    • 26th april launch date

  • Anyone had any experience with their delivery? "Ships in 2-3 weeks" indicates that it is in stock, but it will take them a while to send it out. How often, or by how much do they "exceed customer delivery expectations" in regards to delivery time.

Want this phone a bit sooner than potentially 4 weeks, tossing up whether to wait for a price drop at a retailer to a similar price… and get it maybe 2-3 sooner, or just pay a bit more and get it tonight.

    • as i posted earlier, i got 3 windows phones within a week they had been listed as 2-3 weeks. But it is Kogan so aim for at least the 2 week Mark and follow up your order with them even if they send you an email sounding annoyed that its within the 2 week period :P worked for me.

Isn't buying from this mob like playing Russian roulette. Good if you get a good proper running phone and have no issues. Bad if you get a warranty claim, you will need to get on all 4's to beg them to look into it. Enlighten me OZBargainers…..

    • more like ruslan roulette

    • Isn't buying from this mob like playing Russian roulette.

      Do you mean Ruslan roulette?

Seriously though, I've only heard good things about Kogan's RMA process. The return shipping is covered, a courier shows up at your door to pick it up. And of course shipping it back to you is covered also.

  • Does anyone know if there is a menu button, or if the task switcher can be configured to double as a menu button? I don't want a three-dot-menu bar in my apps.

  • Whats third party support on this?

Hope its easy to root, and gets something like ultimarom and phenomenal kernel.

    • The phone is very easy to root.

  • +1

If only this phone was available when I drop my phone in the tiolet bowl.

    • There has always been water-resistant phones :P
Usually they are low-end ones though if that's what you mean.

  • Definitely waiting for a sub $500 pricetag now.

    • +2

It is amazing just how fast the price has dropped for a relatively new phone. It does says a lot about how overpriced a phone is relative to the cost of production. I think the Iphone 5 is costing like $200 for bills of materials, even if we add research, marketing, etc, it should not be selling like $799 for the 16GB version, but what do I knows, tons of peoples are still buying it.

I only like to buy phones for a bargain.

  • +1

After purchasing a Sony TX-10 Waterproof/resistant camera with touch screen interface I wouldn't like your chances of using this under water. While it is nice to chuck it in water to show off and to save your ass had it drop into water the water really. The touch screen (at least on my camera) was unusuable when wet). However the sheer specs of this phone make it attractive to me.

Am very interested to hear of durability of the phone as the plastic on my SGS3 4G is chipping everywhere making it a very ugly phone.

    • +1

This phone has wet finger tracking which allows you to use the phone touch screen when it's wet - in shower or in a pool, the screen's touch screen might not work while fully submerged under water though. I have tried taking videos under water and it works.

  • Opening the waterproof 'flaps' to insert headphones, or charge the device, would drive me nuts.

Not to mention these flaps will likely break off over time, leaving the device no longer waterproof, and damn ugly!

    Bring on the s4.

    • +1

The charging port flap on my X10 is still intact and going strong, and that's being used by my mum now. I'd say if the flaps on the XZ break you'd have moved on to a different phone (or two) by then anyway.
Personally not a fan of Samsung's design either, so I'd still take an XZ with busted port flap over them.

    • The port flaps are okay, you do get used to them. The messages about not being water resistant are annoying whenever you open one though :)

I am assuming its the same as xperia go and active

    • +1

There is a charging dock which doesn't require the ports to be opened.

  • +1
  • Not asking for neg here. Currently using a Note 2. quite interested in this.

Why everyone think this phone is so good?

I just watched a review video and the reviewers talks about the display isn't that good when viewing in different angles other than directly facing it. Also some sony-flavoured UI ain't that good too.

Surely this is probably the best phone by Sony but definitely not the best android phone in the market…

    • +1

From what I am hearing, 2 manufacturers are doing the displays. One by Sharp and one by some company that I have no idea what the name is (lol). It may be luck fo the draw.

Please take my answer with a pinch of salt as I an just repeating what I have heard and this has no factual evidence. You can do some further research XD

    • +3

I really the Xperia Z. The glass body is a massive improvement over the plastic Samsungs. Personally i don't really care about viewing angles since i only use the phone when its right in front of me. I also like the Sony UI, a lot of people will disagree with me but i prefer it over touchwiz and sense.

      • +1

Also love the Sony UI, hate TouchWiz and replaced it with a different launcher the day I got my S2.
In saying that, I do wish the Sony UI had a bit more customisation (like the ported ones floating around) I could just install Apex as I do now but then I'd lose some of the Sony stuff I like.

    • +1

Most of the reviewers got the pre-production model. The production models are alot better, plus the default background on the XZ is grey that's why it looks abit washed when viewed at extreme angle. Change it to something like a black background and you'll noticed a big difference. Also people are reporting that when they removed the re-applied screen filter they are getting alot better viewing angles. But I would leave them on as it works great outdoors in direct sunlight.

      • +1

i agree with the background. I have a Sola and i recently installed the standard XZ wallpaper and launcher and the bottom part is now grey which doesn't look very good.

  • Does JB-HiFi have a 30-day price guarantee like TGG's or OW? I paid more than this Kogan pricedrop and wondering if I can get refunded the difference?

    • +1

No retailer in australia is going to price match kogan. Kogan is grey import and doesnt have the $60 GST.
If you pay more than the $597 of Harvey Norman you might be able to be refunded the different.

  • Has anyone been game enough to take this into a pool and take underwater photos? I can picture some great fun images with the family, just not game to be the guinea pig with my new purchase.

    • Done with previous models, looks very nice suprisingly. Wonder how the 13 mp camera works out though

Taking a phone call whilst surfing or during watersports is cool, but more of a gimmik

        • +4

          Ozbargain in the shower lol

  • Shame no ant+, otherwise i'd be on this so fast:( Save me buying a garmin 510!

  • Sorry to be off topic but is it possible to pull out the sd card from an older android phone that had all my important apps (games etc) that had been 'moved to sd', put it into a new android phone like this one and restore things like game saves or 'shazams' or whatever else? I have searched online but have not found a definitive answer, I get the feeling that this is because it is not possible…

    • Some things you can transfer through the PC, others may need rooting. Apps and games you can just redownload. Anything you've purchased can be installed on any other device you own. Apps you acquired less than legally, well, you can get them onto your new phone the same way you got them onto your old phone.

      • I know I can just redownload the apps, but I am hoping that for example my 'Flowfree' progress can be recovered, or Angry birds, so I don't have to start these games from the start. Or if I can have my captured songs list in 'Shazam' recovered? I hope this makes sense. All of these are free apps from the Google Play store, so it's not an issue of obtaining the app, just about recovering my progress.

        • you need to backup apps+data
maybe you want some few misc data as well like messages, network settings etc

im rooted and use rom toolbox pro, its a very good automated backup and restore solution

if unrooted, look up ways to backup without root
maybe mybackup pro or similar free app
