3GB Telstra Pre-Paid Micro/Nano Sim Card iPad/Tablets, NOW $10 (Rrp$30) JB HIFI

570

Went to JB Hifi at Macquarie Centre (Sydney). The $30 Telstra starter kit micro/nano SIM card is now for only $10! plenty of stock in store.

i had a looked at Target prior coming to JB and they were selling them for $30. Not sure if this nationwide or when it ends. But $10 for Telstra 3GB starter kit is always a bargain :)

  • is there an expiry date for these ? i mean when is the last date to activate, tot of getting for my family when they come and visit next month..

    • +2

On the back of the pack it says "7 May 2015"

  • +6
  • Last one month?

  • Yes I believe so.

  • does it work for android devices?

and how many simcards can you activate per customer?

    • +1

is there any sim card not working with android? must be apple mobile

    • Pretty sure android devices will work fine, as long as they take micro/nano sim cards

On the website there is nothing specific about devices.

      http://www.telstra.com.au/internet/mobile-tablets/pre-paid-f…

      • +3

You have to promise to use it only in an approved apple device as part of the terms and they say if you aren't they will transfer you to the more expensive prepaid mobile broadband offer. That said I have not known of them enforcing this policy so far.

        • How do they 'transfer' you to a more expensive plan if it's prepaid? Show up at your door and punch you till you give them your credit card details?

        • +1

They change the rate per GB so you end up with less data.

        • +2

No. They simply change the rates that your prepaid service charges per mb. Not all prepaids are created equal. Having said that, don't worry a out it.

    • Thanks for that

And it doesn't say anything about activating more than one Sim card under the same name

      Didn't know about booost
      Might look into this

And they on the testra network as well

      Thanks

  • Can we use this for the normal cap? Will this be possible by take this to store and ask for change

    • +1

I reckon these are different to $30 starter packs.

Probably only get them if you have a 3G/4G tablet.

      • +3

I have used lots of these packs heres my experience:
1they usually come online in 5 minutes but some nights the servers offline and it takes 12+ hours to activate.

2 you can se any of their sim packs to subscribe to any of their plans
Ie swap an ipad only sim to phone plan or vice versa.
Just make sure your device can actually take the mcro/ full sim or cut to size or slot in in an old full size sim
        - havnt tried the nano sims.

3 sometimes you will be put on the plan u want but credit wont appear and u havta calll them back - usually phillipinos.
Sometimes the 3gb shows as 3gb sometimes it shows as $30 which goes down slowly as u use 3gb worth.

I had a brand new 3gb very new batch not work in an old 3g telstra modem but work fine in my samsung galaxy for some reason.
Alsoo a brand new one with a great number wouldnt activate as the number was already wctivated to an old owner who had swapped carriers…so they said…credited $30 to a $2 sim i had.

Often with the ipad packs they dont ask for id to register your details.
Supposedly u can only have 5 active numbers but its so much cheaper to just pop a brand new sim pack rather than recharge.
Ive become quite creative with the telstra sim activation process!

    • +2

NO! Don't do this. I got burned by the last deal, they'll activate it on the prepaid for mobile, but you won't get the $30 of credit…

I tried on live chat a few times and they said they wouldn't do it. Finally i tried calling them, the woman told me it's possible (i asked her if she was sure multiple times, she said yes), but after she activated THREE of my sims, i realized all of them had $0 of credit. I was supposed to get called by their case manager today, but ofc it didnt happen.

      So I just wasted $30.

      • Interesting, I did the same, and got no credit. I jumped on the chat again, mentioned someone activated my SIM card but no credit, and the live chat person credited my account the $30. Looks like I might have gotten lucky.

        • +1

This is social engineering and is not supposed to happen. If you want the $30 credit for cheap without bothering live chat you can get half price ($15) sim cards with free delivery from the online store any time.

          https://onlineshop.telstra.com.au/prepaid-mobile/

      • Call them up or talk to them on the live chat, say that you were told that you would still get your $30 credit and they'll put it on your account - I've done it to three iPad simcards I got from Goodguys.

        • Yeah I'm going to do that this weekend. I have another 3 unactivated that I'll just use on my phone though, it's not worth the hassle.

  • Can someone please enlightment me. Since you can use Telstra credit for Android Play store, wouldn't these be like itunes gift cards with 66% off?

Or if you buy 12 for $120,one for each month, this is better value then the $180 12GB 365 day data plan?

But you'll end up with heaps of mobile numbers attached to your name…

    • Telstra need to realise that it is cheaper to get a new SIM each time via these Starter Pack deals, than recharge at their rates. Eventually loads of their customers are going to have 20/30/40/50+ prepaid numbers each. I know I must have six numbers at least.

      • -3

Legally you have to declare if you have more than 5 active prepaid services and provide more ID once you go over the limit.

      • +4

Telstras share price has been rocketting as analysts think subscriber numbers are booming so telstra love people registering multiple sims.
Eventually the dumb/ lazy journos and analysts will work out that a huge proportion of telstra subscribers are dormant/ non existant.

Bit like the way fairfax / newscorpused to boost their sub numbers by dumping 1000s of issues on unis.

After a couple of years ppl wise up so i doubt th $10 deals will ladt forever.

Im sure telstra makes heaps even at $10

        • That's because too many ozbargainers activating SIMs.

Also network else Telstra is best, everyone on Vodafail is switching over

    • +2

No and yes. These give you $0 money but do give a 3gb 30day data bonus.

No you cannot use these for google play credit or anything that requires prepaid money on the account.

Yes you can buy 12 and activate one of these every 30days and use the 3gb included data each month.

      • oh interesting, so even though it shows no credit you can use 3gb data on it.

      • Oh, what's all that talk about using these as google play credit then?

It was mentioned in the $30-for-$10 australia post sale

        Edit.. oh, see post below

    • +2

66% off is pretty great but how about 80% off? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104208 OOS atm though.

They can be used for Google play but you'll need to do a little work.
when you get the sim go on Telstra 24x7 online chat turn on the tv it'll probably take 15mins to do this.
      and ask

"I have a Ipad $30 prepaid sim and want to activate it for use with my Android mobile phone.
I'd like to activate it under the Longlife mobile phone plan would you be able to help me with that?"

After that everything else falls in place they ask you for the Service number and the Sim serial and sometimes they ask for Goverment issued ID numbers/ phone numbers associated with you and whether this sim came from a prepaid starter kit or bundled with a device.

and right before the end of chat ask them "so we got that $30 Ipad sim activated under the Android mobile long life plan and it has $30 credit on it?"

It might take 24hs to activate though.

I've used this way to turn 3 of them so far but turning them into googleplay credit isn't the big issue it's that it's getting hard to figure out what to buy with the credit. Who knew it'd be hard to spend $120 worth of google credit?

      • DO NOT BUY from these guys. My order was cancelled because they have to activate all SIMs before shipping meaning you need to use all SIM cards with the first 30 days. Buying these cards from JB HIFI means you can have them at home until 2014/2015 before activating them. I plan on activating one or two SIMs a month for ipad mini 4G for 3-6GB a month, that's cheap data!

  • Are these 3g/NextG only, or 4g as well?

    • Telstra doesn't limit you, it's up to your device and location to access LTE.

  • So these are not good for mobiles then? I'm going out to the countryside next week and would like a Telstra SIM if my Optus is out of coverage.

For anyone who can't get to a store - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321123…

$11.50 posted but accepting offers - worth a shot at trying for $10.

  • Does anybody know if it's possible to use one of these packs and apply the 3GB credit to a MF-70 WiFi modem (purchased from the recent OfficeWorks or Coles deals) without changing the SIM card? I guess it would be easy to do by placing the included Micro SIM in an adapter of some sort and swapping SIMS, but not sure if it just comes with a card in the pack that allows the 3GB to be credited to an active account.

    • +1

I don't think you can. I have tried in the past to transfer the $30 credit to my modem and the numerous times it only gives you 700MB of data. 3GB is for ipad only.

    • +1

No, just grab a micro or nano sim converter for $1 (posted) from ebay and stick the microsim that's inside the ipad kit into your MF70.

      • Brent's Bits Had/has one for $1 posted

Learn that DSE!!! This is how you make a deal.

    • How is this deal any better than something from DSE? If you read through the thread, no one has confirmed this deal is available anywhere other than the store the OP went to, and it's not available online, I've looked.

  • Can these be used in an iPhone for data only and still get the 3gb or do Telstra detect this and cut off the service or perhaps just charge the usual 10 cents per Mb ?

  • +1

Just bought 10 in Hobart store. Had about 50 or more hanging up :D

    • Wow that's a lot of data/Google play credit.

  • +1

Bought two from Victoria Gallery JB store (Sydney), it seems available in all stores. Expiry date Mar 2015.

Why it says "Prepaid sim for the iPad" on the package, very confused, hope it would work on my Nexus 7.

You can choose the lucky number too.

      1. Offer Restrictions
2.1 By activating the Telstra Pre-Paid iPad Account you acknowledge that you have purchased a Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM for iPad Kit, and the Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM for iPad provided to you in this Kit can only be used in an approved Apple iPad device. If you use your Telstra Pre-Paid micro-SIM for iPad in any other device, you will be automatically charged the standard Telstra Pre-Paid Wireless Broadband charges as set out in Our Customer Terms based on your most recent recharge denomination.
      • Market price for data continues to drop, & makes that increasingly 'in theory'.

  • JB HiFi Strand arcade (Sydney CBD Pitt St) refusing to sell unless you activate on the spot.

  • Is true you can have more than 5 activated sims.
Currently I have 37 sims activated according to Telstra.

I was told im a good customer lol.
Once you have any prepaid sim activated as a ipad and its showing the 3gb
You are all set to use in any device.

    • +1

37 sim currently active? They asking for any extra iD required.

I'm just gonna get to my five limit and get them to
      Close them all at once.

  • I'm pissed. East gardens Jb will not allow me to buy 6 and wants me to activate them. I'm going back in 5 to tell off the manager

  • Btw in Sydney you get 4G LTE. I got around 25Mb/15Mb in a lot of areas here.

    • I'd be more enthused if they put it to $100-per mega bit; down from 1+thousand.

  • Failed in my bid to get more than one. What a load of crap

  • Just grabbed 2 from jb hifi at Gateways shopping centre in Perth. Lady said take as many as you like no questions asked. They just hanging on the shelf so you can help yourself and take them to the counter. 50+ in stock. 7th of may 2015 expiry.

    cheers.

  • Well Jb hifi East gardens are just being difficult. Anyway I can get them from Telstra. I got into argument and the best the can do was sell me one card without activating

  • just grabbed 3 from Adelaide CBD JB, no issues. Had heaps left. Thanks OP

  • Anyone used it on Telstra Elite modem and still got 3GB data?

    • normal activation will give 3gb as the ipad plan is preselected

      • Thanks tonester, you know there is an offer restriction on this starter pack, do I still get that 3gb to use on Telstra Elite modem? Can anyone share their experience?

        • I bought the normal SIM and activate it for ipad use in order to get 3GB using my Telstra Elite modem for all my android devices - phone and tablet everywhere I go. If I go online to my telstra portal I can see the amount of MB I use everyday.

        • yes afaik sim cards are not smart enough to know what device they're inside?

        • sure, beware,
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86486#comment-1133266
only ime, tls owners turned a blind eye to any apple covenant.

    • You'll need an adapter to even try that. The Telstra Elite takes a full size SIM, these are Micro and Nano size.

      • I just push the micro sim into the normal sim slot in the modem and it works perfectly.

  • Got three of the Nano SIM. The guy I spoke to said take as many as you want, no limits. Was offered the option to activate at the store but there was no pressure to do so. Will look to find a few more, get six months worth.

  • These ipane broadband sims surely seem all the rage lately. Whatever happened to Standard SIM credit prepaid Supermarket[67%] deal? - It seem like last sale occur back in Jan, yea?

  • Occasionally they will ask for my licence number or address again.. when activating a new sim i give them the number of one of the older activated sims so i dont have to give them all my details.

Dont forget to use your 1 free month of mobile foxtel guys.. basically will work on tablets or phones that telstra sells or has sold.

    • whats this mobile foxtel?

all foxtel channels through 3G data for free?

  • Theres around 30 channels..must go thru 3g but the data doesnt come off your allowance…

    • Wow that's great
      Able to watch foxtel
Can't wait to activate this simcard

Do I need to download an app?

Or is through a bigpond website?

  • +1

i have 18 sim packs in the cupboard waiting to activate with expiries through to Feb 2015.
Is it wrong to buy more?

    • wow and I felt bad buying 2 from the post office deal awhile back lol.

  • Bought a pile of them from JB today, don't need to activate them on the spot either.

    • Did you need to fill any paperwork out when buying them?
when I bought some at two different Posts neither of them remembered that you needed to fill out that goverenment paperwork until I reminded them which makes me wonder if you even need to.

  • How long do these take to activate? Did mine last night and its still in progress after 16 hours.

    • 16 hours? Best live chat with the support team to sort it out for you

  • When is this deal over? I cant seem to find the date anywhere

  • Ok thanks :)

  • Had a closer look today when picking up a couple more of these. You will be glad to know this deal goes until…..

    30 JUNE!

You all have plenty of time to pick these up at this price. Sweet!

  • Some one bought one for 9.5o ? This would rank Jb, #1 above TGG/Dse.
