thoroughly enjoying wind waker hd and mk8 online somewhat softens the blow having bought one a few weeks back.

it's a good console and the upcoming games look amazing.

  • $150 Wii U ;)

  • I was just about to drive to Big W and get theirs.

  • Can you go to the US e-shop with an AU console? Or is it region locked?

    • Region locked.

  • Is it a better deal than the MK8 bundle from Target a few weeks back?

    • +1

yes, $237 vs $269 at target

      • Which place has the cheapest price for MK8?

        • +2
        • Super Mario 3D World
          Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
          Mario Kart 8

          All $58 is crazy good.

And new Yoshi's Island, and Tomagochi Life for $44, also great.

        • I dropped by today at my local Target to grab ZombiU for ten bucks. My local Target forget to bring down it's opening sale deal for Mario Kart 8 so I managed to grab it for $58 today before they grabbed the promotion price down. Win for me!

  • Sheesh, I'm tempted. Just for Splatoon, and maybe Mk8/W101.

Where's the deep discounts on the 2/3DS, though (as a non-Chinpokomon fan)?

    • +1

      If you like pokemon, $148 for a 2DS + Pokemon X or Y

Edit: Sorry, just noticed that your not a pokemon fan :)

      • If you don't already have a 3DS, worth it to get a 2DS just for Zelda:ALBW. The nostalgia! XD

      • Haha, yeah I may have ninja edited that! I'm really tempted to grab one of those 2DS deals anyway and just hock the Pokemon game/code to a relative or friend. ALBW and Mario Golf have been calling to me for some time!

  • I'm going to have to pass, waitibg for it to go $100 not to far from that.

just makes me wonder is nintendo still making money on this?

    • +1

I think they are selling at a loss & aiming to break-even on the Basic U's, but ultimately rely on 1st party games & premium U's to make revenue.

    • Imo, just like what grab said, I'd imagine they want to sell off as many wii Us as possible so that game developpers will say (oh look, people have the wii U now, time to release my games) [looking at you ubisoft].

      • I get a feeling that isn't the real reason why developers aren't making games for it.. There are more Wii U sold than Xbox 1 for example. Plus the Wii last gen beat the other two consoles handily, and didn't get much third party support outside of shovelware.

        • Thats because Nintendo have always marketed themselves as a 'family orientated' company. Their main target demographic are families with children & this shows through the games they make. 3rd party developers don't think they are 'mature' enough for more violent games, but this has started to change in recent gaming gens. BigN make most of their money from 1st party games.

Just goes to show their current business model is working.
Remember that they are responsible for bringing the gaming industry back into a boom way back in the '80s, if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have a thriving gaming reality we have now.

  • Is the 8gb model good enough to play all retail copies? Can this model goes online version too?

    • Is the 8gb model good enough to play all retail copies

Yes, save data takes up very little space

Can this model goes online version too?

Not sure what you mean, you can connect it to the internet

      • Sorry I mean can i still goes online to get download version? Do i need something like PS3 or Xb360 which requires harddrive? wants to get this for my boy

        • +3

yes, but depending on the game you want to download you might need an external hard drive

          Nintendo Land (3576 MB)
New Super Mario Bros. U (2304 MB)
          Game & Wario (4036 MB)
          Pikmin 3 (4547 MB)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (2467 MB)
Sonic Lost World (Wii U version) (8474 MB)
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (9748 MB)
          Wii Party U (6571 MB)
          The Wonderful 101 (12.9 GB)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U version) (7021 MB)

        • +1

Out of that list of games the only ones you could download are New Super Mario Bros U or Wind Waker HD as the 8gb model has roughly 3GB of usable storage. I would say an external hard drive is a must, luckily you don't have to get a special one like for XBOX and any hard drive you have lying around or buy will work.

        • They need to have a seperate power source though right? Or was that fixed with a patch?

        • +2

they recommended using seperate one , but i plug in my 16g thumb drive and works fine

        • I was able to use my 32GB USB on it, but be sure to get anything you want to keep off it before using it on the Wii U as you will have to format it (which deletes the data off of it in the process).

EDIT: Just looked into it and it would seem that while using a USB stick does work it's NOT reliable and can fail soon after using. So I guess the safest option is to do what Nintendo suggested and get a HDD with a dedicated power source.

  • I still looking for Premium WiiU for $250-$280

    • +3

      There's not a huge difference that's worth $100 more.

Simply get a 16GB USB for $10 and recycle your old sensor!

      • +2

Some ppl want it just for the colour. O_o
Worth that large amount of cash? Each to their own.

      • What is this sensor that comes with the premium? They make it sound important >o>

        • +1

The standard sensor bar to be used with Wii-remotes for Wii games. BTW, its not THAT important…

        • +1

only for things like wii sports

  • Man, just got the pack from Big W. At least I didn't have to wait till next week for one..

Gonna wait till the price drops ti $58 on MK8. Anyone know if you really have to wait for click and collect at Big W when ordering online? Doesn't make sense for them to send a copy of the game to a store which already has them, does it?

    • +1

It doesn't make any sense at all.

But that is what they do.

  • has anyone gotten usb powered external hard drives to work on the wii u? or is it only ac powered externals?

    • +3

They don't recommend them, but they do work. Apparently you need a Y-splitter so it plugs into two USB ports on the Wii U.

    • My Y split usb powered 3.0 HDD does not work with the wii u. Can't say that's the case for everyone but didn't work for me.

  • This is a really tempting deal. Is there any real point to paying ~$420 for the 32GB Premium model of the Wii U? The only thing I can think of is the current bundles with Mario Kart 8 plus a few other less impressive titles (games like Nintendoland) which could justify the value a bit more.

    • +5

You already get Nintendoland in the Skylanders WiiU bundle and Mario Kart 8 is not worth $241 extra. The only thing that the premium gets you is 10% back in store credit of anything you buy on the eShop but that promotion is ending very soon and I doubt you are going to buy $2041 worth of stuff to make up the difference. The 32GB model is definitely not worth it, just get this 8GB and attach a USB HDD.

  • Looks like instore only?

    • Currently, yes.

      • +1

Not currently.. Does not go on sale till next week

  • do you guys reckon this is as low as it will get or should i wait for it to go down even lower?

    • -1

It will always stay this price forever and ever.

      Cmon man.

    • +3

i doubt it will get any lower, but then again i thought the EB bundle wouldn't get any cheaper

    • +1

You should hope for a miracle that COTD will sell them for $99 in a 'crash-a-thon' like they did for the Wii eons ago or alternatively wait till the console gen's EoL or do this.

    • +2

      Buy it now and enjoy.

  • Doesn't the big w one have an extra 3 figures?

    • yes it has

  • +15

You guys can thank me whenever; had I not paid $280 at Christmas for this with Nintendoland and Just Dance, the universe wouldn't be lowering the price drastically to spite me. You're welcome.

  • So just to confirm. If I ask my local big w to hold me a bundle and they say yes (I dont mention the price) and then i got to pick it up 5 mins later it will scan for $198?

    • +1

No need, I went to big w today and the price was $198 in the cabinet but my big w didn't have mario kart. 8 so price matched at jb hifi

  • +4

    This is a magical buy-in price - can't resist at that price-point.

Will probably sell Skylanders if I can remove it before the kids see it as we've got it on PS3 and the original Wii already.

Looking forward to welcoming Nintendo back into the home - this time in HD.

  • Wish I have time to sit in front of a TV for gaming otherwise I wouldn't be stuck with handheld gaming consoles (3DS and Vita) to play games whenever I have 1/2 hr break.

    • Off-TV play via the gamepad. It's a major drawcard of the WiiU.

      • I thought of that too but apparently not many games support this feature?

        • Is that true?

Support list not as small as anticipated. You could go so far as to say it's an extensive list & its still constantly growing.

        • But you do need to leave the console on right? Maybe can use the wall socket at the maccas to power up the console and play it off the controller screen.

        • +2

Yes, but are you really that desperately hooked to a game to be willing to lug it around? Might as well tow a petrol electric generator. Then you can be the first to claim playing a game console on the street. Lolz!

Have to admit though that would be funny to see.

  • Anyone tried going into k mart to see if the wii u scans at $179 yet?

  • Realistically how much can the Skylanders pack be sold for on Ebay?

    • +24

Realistically you could just go to ebay.com.au and look.

    • +1

I've seen them going for about $25 recently (not including shipping). Though this deal and the Big W deal will surely push that down a bit. I'd say $20.

      • +3

EB is taking the pack for $18

  • in the product image on the website it says nintendoland included, does anyone know if it is actually included in this bundle?

    • +1

It is, it's inside the box.

  • +1

If we traded the Skylanders pack and the Nintendo Land into EB games, do you know how much "store credit" you could get?
    TYIA.

    • Probably about $20

      • +1

Traded it in today (18/06) for $18

        • +1

So they're not picky even though it's technically for 'resale'?

        • Nope. I asked about it and the reply was "we can still sell it".

  • Maybe dumb question, does Wii U works with the Wii Fit and its balance board?

    • yes

  • I should have pulled the trigger back in that crazy dick smith 50% off Wii U consoles last year.

    deepregret

    • +2

That's the universal coupon code to get 0% off everywhere. :)

    • +1

Why deepregret? Even at 50% off the wii u basic was $174 back in september. Is there really that many good games that you would have played back then?

    • +1

I got it back then and I don't understand how you have deep regret. If anything, a bit of regret now, this is pretty much $5 for skylanders and Nintendo land :P And I haven't even touched it yet, got it mainly for MK8 and Smash haha.

    • i guess you guys are right :)

  • I was planning to move from my old Wii to an Xbox One. This deal is so good that I think I'll stay with Nintendo for now and upgrade to Wii U. :)

  • I'm expecting a stampede at my local K-Mart. I might check it out at midnight for the LOLs.

  • BigW Deal was a flop. Its now instore only on the same day so its race on now!

    • +3

the big w deal is already available in store

      • June 26 instore

        • I bought one yesterday. Its in the comments…

        • I bought one today as well

        • Call up your local store and ask if they have it in stock. If they say yes, ask them to scan and tell you the price. I did that yesterday as did many fellow ozbargainers. I would NOT mention the catalogue at all.

        • WHAT! crap :-(

I was there today and looked at it……fail on my part!

        • +2

It's pretty shitty that big w changed the rules. Had it not been for herbet's tipoff in the ofher thread, i would've been majorly pissed if i had waited for the online sale for nothing. Hopefully you can still go back to that big w and purchase if you cant wait for the kmart one

  • Thanks for posting this deal! I thought Id missed out on the BigW offer and now Im still in with a chance at an even cheaper price!!

  • Tempted. But $250 for just one game I want (MK8) is too much. Also huge back catalog from XBOX360, PS3 and PC I just haven't played.

Damn PSN+, Games for Gold and Steam!!!

Read somewhere backwards compat with Wii games is not perfect for PAL territories.

    So so close!!!

  • Nice, thanks for posting this. Going to convert my flybuys points into flybuys dollars and get this pretty much for free.

  • The new Skylanders game in Oct could also be driving retail need to dump inventory of this pack before the title is superseded.

  • +2

actually, i'm starting to think that $198 is the base price for the skylanders bundle at BIG W now. the catalog special is for the skylanders bundle at $198 + a free triple pack of swap force characters valued at $29 RRP.

the K-MART skylanders bundle is $179, but doesn't come with the swap force triple pack. hence the price difference.

correct me if i'm wrong, but none of the people who bought their wii u from BIG W yesterday or today (including me) received the triple pack of swap force characters which was advertised along with the skylanders bundle did they?

    • I got one today from big w and it had three skylanders figurines with it
