Dennis Rodman would love this deal.

  • This is actually a single way.

If you go to North Korea and leave a bible at a hotel, you can be possibly jailed indefinitely.

north korea to put on trial two American tourists one for leaving bible in hotel room

    • i'll leave the koran next time, maybe they'll like it.

      • +1

If you do hide it in the cover of Das Kommunistische Manifest(The Communist Manifesto). :)

        • You will still incur the wrath of the dear leader of the DEMOCRATIC republic of north korea. Elections held every 5 years, candidates already picked, only need to select yes or no and surprisingly enough 100% voter turnout with 100% of yes votes :P

I actually few on Air Koryo from Pyongyang to Beijing on a relatively new Tupalev in 2011. Interesting safety video which extols the virtues of Juche and Kim Jong Il (youtube it and have a look for yourself).

Service wasn't amazing, akin to a budget airline and we were served a 'refreshment' which consisted of the saddest looking hamburger in the world but tasted alright. Pity that this meal is probably better than what most North Koreans will get to eat during the day.

Highly recommend fellow interpid Ozbargainers to make the trip to the Hermit Kingdom!

  • +2

I think it is my only chance in this lifetime to fly Business Class!Wohoo!!Thank you OZ Bargain!!! Now, do you guys have any recommendation for good hotels in PyongYang?

    • +3

Ryugyong Hotel….. Just don't expect the room to be…..furnished :P

      • +1

I am happy to see furnished not finished at the end of your answer.

        • I aim to please ;)

I up voted just for the funny comments I ready in here

About darn time for decent airfare prices!!!

Anyone know what the cost of travel insurance is for North Korea is and what it covers?

    • +5

      Lol.
      Insurance? forget it.
Not even Magnetos force field will protect you.

    • +1

Well you won't have to worry about a civil uprising…

    • +2

The chance of you getting killed or sick is lower than most of the countries in the world, I would say, as long as you don't act silly. By acting silly I mean messing with the law laid down by the officials there.

    • +4

I travelled there last year and took out insurance with world nomads. NK is technically covered since it does not have a 'do not travel'classification from dfat. Most insurance policies exclude countries with this rating. Luckily I didn't have to make a claim. Come to think of it, it would have been next to impossible to make a claim while in the country!

    • Your only insurance is to let the Australian Defense know your traveling there and ask for special training if trouble arise.

The relationship between Korea and Australia used to be pretty good at one point. With most people saying nice things who have actually visited Korea themselves. For most people who actually have had dealings with them, the Koreans have always tried to extend and develop their friendship with us.

Australia has actually had official diplomatic relations with the Democratic peoples republic of Korea since 1974. They closed their embassy in Canberra in 2008. They wanted to reopen it in 2013, but it was rejected by us due to heavy political pressure from another nation which we also share close diplomatic ties. It is a little ironic as many requests/negotiations used to go through us.

The Democratic people's republic of Korea used to have quite a bit of business between Australia directly. Now it is mainly indirect, but you will find a lot more people than you think have gone on golfing tours in Korea to expand business opportunities.

The tours are also pretty good and memorable too. Food, shows, golf courses, nature are nice, and their citizens seem to genuinely care for each other in a community.

Their crime rate is low compared to us. Just make sure you read the rules of the tour, use common sense and follow the tour. Like in any country like that, keep out of politics and don't say anything too controversial while you are there.

Still, would highly recommend going if you get a chance in your life.

This is the actual cost of an airplane trip. Other airlines are making huge profit!

  • +5

Sounds like the Ozbargainer's version of a 'working holiday.'

  • +1

Can I take my dog as well, fat dog in a fat seat.

Must say very polar route this.

  • +5

What does the NK possibly want from a bunch of kidnapped ozbargainers?

    • +6

      Procurement capabilities.

      • +2

You mean - World Leading Procurement Capabilities!!

        • +2

How long until the next free uranium sample promotion from Paladin?

    • Efficiency!

    • +18

Eneloops. We probably have enough of those to power the electricity of the entire city there.

    • +9

I actually thought about that yesterday. Wouldn't Ozbargainers make the worst hostages imaginable?

First, when asked for ransom, their family will ask for coupons, and demand 15% off. Then, they will try to pricematch other well-known groups which like to kidnap foreigners, or demand NK beat the price (plus cost of shipping the hostage). And if (if) they are in fact prepared to pay the ransom for their kidnapped Ozbargainer, they will end up doing a Paypal claim within 45 days or a creditcard chargeback, and claim the ransom back.

      Not worth the hassle.

      • +1

Don't forget you can claim Cashback if you pay the ransom with Amex.

        • +5

Worse, the hassle of paying the ransom over multiple $99 PayWave transactions so they can get 5% cashback.

  • +5

    Came for the lols.

Does Air Koryo have any FF programs? I would love to earn some FF points.

  • I used the following tour group and was there for the 60th anniversary of the Korean war (victory day, where they "defeated" the Americans!)
I highly recommend going there, as i had lots of fun in a very different culture and way of thinking. Oh and the beer is extremely cheap!

    http://www.north-korea-travel.com/north-korea-group-tours.ht…

    • I don't think people really go to North Korea for beers but thanks for your insight..

      • a true ozbargainer will!

    • +1

That websites packages are actually really affordable, to bad im no longer welcome in North Korea now after posting this deal with my name listed :/

Do you know why there are no tours operating in December?

    • Ohh you must have gone the same time I went, I booked through a different agency though. Did you get to see the military parade? I noticed most of the tour buses parked outside the bowling alley

    • +2

Why do you put defeated into quote? Was it actually the other way around?

      • +1

The war ended on a ceasefire agreement neither side was defeated. But in the DPRK they certainly drill it into you that this was the first time the Americans ever lost a war and this was to the might of their dear leader.

        • They did kick the Americans' asses though. With the help of the Chinese voluntary army of course. And they sort of took the credit, which irritates the Chinese.

  • +2

This is definitely a one way trip. Might be seen on Channel 7's new TV show known as What Really Happens in Pyongyang.

  • +3

Sigh…so many witty comments in this thread. Upvotes for everyone!!

  • what is the fuel surcharge levy on this? lol

    • They use biofuel these days in NK….

      • How many dead bodies (cough)…I mean liters of fuel can you fit on a plane?

  • Bring your own dog, eat for free.

  • +1

I'm picturing a compound with guard towers and razor wire as the Business Lounge!

  • +2

Dear Wife, we should totally get this US$899 VAIO that's on the front page at the moment.

You mean the same OzBargain that's currently put 175 upvotes on a flight to North Korea?

    Yes!?

    God dammit, OzBargain.

(elements here may be works of fiction)

      Google Translate doing its best:

"The best country in the world to welcome the day! I want you on our magnificent capital, Pyongyang, please enjoy the best flight! Americans have the right to shut down the gate (unless you're Dennis Rodman) for the treatment line on the wall, please. They will only be for the protection of … You can buy a one-way ticket to one of the Aussie's tight ass, you are in for a treat, do not worry about the shiny machine gun!"

The Koryo's planes are pretty old and it quite scary to fly on it.

    JS251 Pyongyang => Beijing economy
    JS152 Beijing => Pyongyang economy

    • +2

don't think Pyongyang offer a 'fly thru' option

    • There are no foreigners aloud on the Russia - North Korea flights apparently

What is even weirder is the Pyongyang to Kuwait flight via Pakistan

      • +3

"There are no foreigners aloud on the Russia - North Korea flights apparently"

Those (ex-)communist types value their quiet, you know.

  • +8

The irony of flying business class to a communist country.

    • +2

      The bourgeois have ejector seats.

  • I just came here to read comments

  • OP, one question, how the **** you came across this deal?

    • I study travel & tourism full time, and i usually go overseas every 3 or so months so i was looking at airfares from Beijing planning the next leg of a trip and it showed Pyongyang at $9, but i cant book the dates i need.

Thought it would be funny to post it haha

      • +1

I wish I did tourism. Hospitality was boring and useless :(

I did go to vietnam though, and that was a blast.

        • I cant seem to get a job out of it yet, 24 countries solo travel in the last three years but apparently im not experienced, maybe when i eventually travel Europe.

        • @davohatcher:

What do you want to work as? If you are limiting your search as a travel agent, or a travel planner, you may find yourself fighting against other fresh-out-of-uni graduates as well. A lot of people that I see working in Flight Centre etc. are not fresh uni graduates. They look more like seasoned sales people.

Getting some sales exp will give you an edge as a travel consultant. They want people who can sell and not just people who have travelled worldwide.

        • +2

Diploma lists me to be qualified from car rental's to airlines to travel agent and so on, so im really looking at anything at the moment, just need to get my foot in the door. Also have numerous certificates in CRS/GDS aswell and a Diploma in IT.

Yes i did a group interview at Flight Centre and discovered this aswell, really annoyed me that the people that were chosen had no idea on what they were selling or had not even heard of a majority of well known airline's or even country's.

I definitely know i could sell a destination better having been there first hand then someone who has never even heard of the place. I just need to get some sales experience

Hopefully something comes around soon :)

        • This confirms my experiences with Flight Center (4 OS holidays). Will tell you anything you want to hear until the deposit is paid. Then good luck getting any advice or having them book any tours/activities.

I don't understand how their business continues to grow with such terrible customer service and how easy it is to book online.

Which brings me to my advice, maybe you could do some writing courses, combine it with your IT and start applying for travel writing.

        • @PainToad:
Many others i know have shared your pain, ive had people inbox me on facebook asking for my advice on trips because they booked at flight centre and they were told eg, "not many people go to India so we are not really familiar with that destination"

In regards to travel writing i have made a website from another ozbargin deal on here, that could be a good idea once i get the hang of it :)

According to Smart Traveller, "Reconsider your need to travel" I guess with $9 you don't have to reconsider? lol

  • i would actually consider this tour with some friends after i linked it to them. however the let down is the safety concern of the actual flgiht

    • +1

Train from Beijing -> Dandong -> Pyongyang is a good alternative then

      • +3

Train from City-> Dandenong -> Maccas, not such a good idea

  • With all the 200+ positives I bet nobody is going to fly to NK.

    All talk…

    • We're here for lols, don't take it seriously. How about if I sponsor you to go there first, Hot Shot?

      • +3

You think you'll have much luck raising 9 bucks off the Ozbargain community?

        • wouldn't be the worst idea out there for a Kickstarter appeal!

  • +1

    *Return ticket not guaranteed

    • Or you mean they probably arrest you for checking out ozbargain.

  • Business class return frights for 9 dorrahs :)

  • +1

I know a number of people who have been there on holiday (and returned). They had a great time.

  • -1

doesn't the rules say the deal needs to involved australia some how? like in singapore airport a 1L bottle of smirnoff is like $15 why isn't that a bargin?

    • fairly sure it needs to be available to australians. not be an australian deal

    • +1

      It is available to Australians.

This was posted in the travel section.
People post deals about free stopover tours in Singapore, Paris etc, they are available to Australians that are traveling at that time.

If you do not travel the world then that is your own problem and this deal is not available to you.
-There has been multiple airfare deals from Australia to Beijing - This can be used as an add on
-North Korean tours can be booked in Australia (Peregrine etc)

  • The Dear Leader welcomes all to our glorious nation plentiful in wealth and prosperity.
