Received this email from the PayPal team:

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We appreciate your effort in participating in the marketing campaign for USD $5.00 Promotion Survey.

Our Marketing team has confirmed that this promotion is only offered to PayPal accounts in Central America as such, we are unable to issue a credit to your PayPal account.

We apologize for the confusion and thank you for choosing PayPal.

    Sincerely,
    Gerald

    • same =(

what! i just called and they said their not affiliated with ozbargain so can't give me my credit… what… :(

  • Called, and they said something about taking legal action against people who "illegally advertised" the promotion, and wasn't able to credit the account.

    • Huh… This should be interesting.

    • +20

taking legal action against people who "illegally advertised" the promotion

Cheers guys, my OB days are over :(

      • +7

Don't drop the soap "Tight Arse"

      • +4

        lol @ action…

A few years back, I posted the free Airwick candle offer from Airwick/Woolworths… Airwick lawyers sent me an email, informing me they were going to take legal action against me…
Their people were the 'smart' ones to run a competition with one generic barcode…

        I'm still here…

    • +1

They would have to sue themselves, because they put it out there themselves. Sharing a public unsecured website is not illegal.
I'm trying to imagine the response of the judge:
"You have put a website in place inviting people to collect free money. And you are now unhappy because as it turns out, a large proportion of the world's population likes free money. You now wish to blame the messenger?"

  • guys make sure you're calling the dispute department. it should make a difference i hope

  • I recently emailed paypal about the offer and replied with this message
    "Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We appreciate your participation, this survey though is exclusive to PayPal Central America users as per our Global Marketing Team hence, we are unable to issue a credit to your PayPal account.

We will keep you posted once promotions are available in PayPal Australia."

    • I got that as well. Oh well :(

  • +2

Told people it was too good to be true… Now paypal receives some free advertising so they can continue to rip people off with their exuberant fees and high exchange rates. Pity you can't revoke positive votes too after a certain time.

    • +1

Well quite a few people got the $5 so no point in saying "I told you so". And free advertising? I guess you could call it advertising albeit negative advertising.

Thank you for taking the time to contact PayPal Business Support. I am happy to assist you further.

I have read your email and I am sorry to hear you have not yet received your $5.00 credit. I have credited your balance with $10.00 as a goodwill gesture. You will see this the next time you log into your PayPal Account.

    • +1

Wow. Well done. More good news…

      • +1

        T'was a bit unexpected!

        • Which email did you use to contact them?

        • @cooldude123:

Just the contact setup on the site, used: Topic: 'Sending/Receiving Money'>Sub Topic: 'Coupon/Redemption Code'

    • would you like to share your email message please? :)

      • +1

        Pretty blunt!

        Sent two e-mails.
2nd one…….Over 24 hours since I sent KMM133871306V54630L0KM question (asking why no credit of USD5 received for completing survey), still waiting for a response.

    • Are you perhaps a business customer whom Paypal gives more of a crap about than us regular plebs?

      • Who knows, I do have a business account with them but still have problems with them.
However, they do know I'm not shy on reporting them for any breaches ;)

  • Tried emailing twice to no avail. Latest response being this:

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.
We have credited some accounts as courtesy during the clarification of the campaign requirements, however, moving forward we can no longer apply the credit for Australian PayPal members.
Our customers in Central America are the only ones invited to participate and received a direct email communication from PayPal to answer the survey.
Australian PayPal members, as confirmed by our marketing team on 16 Sept 2014, would not have received an invite for the promotional campaign.
Furthermore, the link for the survey was only shared through the blog site of 'OZ Bargain'. Please note that the blog site 'OZ Bargain' is not an official PayPal site nor an official website to promote the said campaign.
Though some of the details with regard to the campaign and some of our Australian PayPal account holders that received a courtesy credit were part of the discussion, this does not guarantee nor confirm that all PayPal account members will receive a courtesy credit.
We have noted your interest with our promotional campaign and we hope you can take part when it's time for PayPal Australia.
Should you have further inquiries, do not hesitate to email us or you may also call directly at (02) 8223-9500 / 1-800-073-263

  • wonder if i can change my address on paypal to central america!

    • you can't
      Paypal is country-specific

      • you can! But you have to contact the customer support and they will do it for you.I did it back in 2010

  • did anyone else get any of the other deals NOT $5 ?
eg. 70% off ebay deals ?

  • These are the latest terms;
    https://www.paypal-activate.com/clac/eml-na-dt/t-c-eng-468TE…

    This is the original terms, no mention of direct communication, still trying to find a screenshot;

  • Guys and Girls… There's no point bitchin about it any longer, it clearly stated:
PayPal and/or 3rd party merchants reserve the right to cancel offers at any time without notice.
This is their escape clause from exploitation by us, and others around the world, and their legal right to exercise!

  • They sent a survey about your recent experienc emailing them, so I gave them a negative feedback which probably will not accomplish anything but they should really think through their promotions before making them available and they could have handled it better

  • I called them up and have been answer with the same respond as it's not for Australian user. Geez negative experience, forget about it.

  • -5

Knew this was too good to be true.

    • +2

A better analogy would be "you snooze you lose"

  • congrats that got them to budge, easier drawing blood from stone.

    second email response;

    It's not for everyone…

  • Been credited with $10 AUD, presumably as I am a "Business" user.

Thank you for taking the time to contact PayPal Business Support. I am happy to assist you further.

I have read your email Mr Last Name and I am sorry to hear that you have not yet received your $5.00 credit. I have credited your PayPal balance with $10.00 as an apologies for the inconvenience. You will see this the next time you log into your PayPal account.

Thank you for choosing PayPal and have a pleasant day.

Well done Jordan. Amazing how the doors are closed for some, yet PayPal apologises and doubles the credit for others.

  • +2

    Double standards all round here…

    • +1

Did you survive the last quarter yesterday :(

      • +1

        Nope :(

  • Wouldn't give it to me either. Big thumbs down to paypal on this one.

  • got the no "proforma" - interesting how inconsistent they are being

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We appreciate your effort in participating to this marketing campaign: USD$5 Promotion Survey.

Our Marketing Team has confirmed that this promotion is only offered to PayPal accounts in Central America as such, we are unable to issue a credit to your PayPal account.

    We apologize for the confusion.

    Thank you for choosing PayPal.

  • also got the proforma…..oh well congrats on those who managed to get the credit

  • I Got this response, however I replied back and mentioned that I knew of others (Australian PayPal Holders) who had received there $5 vouchers.. see what they write back I guess..

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We appreciate the time you have taken to answer the survey. We are aware of the current issue on a marketing campaign recently rolled out in Central America.

It was a campaign run in Central America and Australian customers were not eligible to enter.

The T&Cs stated that the offer is only valid for customers who received a direct communication from
PayPal Inc. or a paypal.com offer. Customers with Australian account would not have received an
eDM promoting this campaign, as it only went out to selected accounts in Central America. Someone
has essentially come across a loophole in the mechanics of the campaign and posted it on OZ Bargain.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will let you know if you are eligible with any of our upcoming promotions in the future to avoid such incident.

We will also take note of your interest with our promotional campaign and we hope you can take part when it's time for PayPal Australia.

    Thank you for choosing PayPal.

    Sincerely,
    Leslie

    • come across a loophole in the mechanics of the campaign and posted it on OZ Bargain.
What loophole? It didn't say it was specifically for America.
Pulling excuses out of their ar$e now

      • So after more then 24hrs since last response from PayPal, I've not received a single reply from them.. I'll send them the same reply again incase they missed it.. but not looking good…

  • +1

Lol, i emailed them not expecting paypal to honor the $5 but just got a reply email saying that the US$5 was transfered to me!

    • +1

      Great work rukia!

  • +1

I'm wondering if there is a little more to people receiving or not receiving this in regards to things like:
I logged into .com and emailed them.
I have previously had more than just AUD on my account.
I have a verified Premier Account.

Also, I haven't converted the money yet and have noticed that the money does not show in my app or mobile site, only the full site!

  • I didn't get it even after emailing paypal as this offer was only meant to be for central America. I'm curious to know how many people actually got it?!

Not sure why my negative vote was revoked as obviosuly this seems to be targeted offer from Paypal and it was just waist of time for me!

  • They wouldn't give it to me. Same email as above stating only for the US. What a load of crap

  • Let's all boycott paypal….

    • +1

      and drink Kool-Aid!

  • +2

Got a survey to fill out for the recent communication with PayPal ;)

    • My partner got it too, then did it several days ago, but haven't got money from Paypal until now

  • Well this is disappointing. No free US$5 even after fulfilling all of PayPal's requirements on their website. I now plan to boycott PayPal and use… well, there is no competition when it comes to eBay.

    • There is, it's called Paymate. It used to be ebay's preferred before Paypal came along.

  • +6

When rang Paypal for the $5 credit, the staff ask me "Did you get the survey link from OZBARGAIN?" right after I finished my sentence.

We are famous! Obviously some fellow ozbarainers sold us out.

    • +1

no, its not like your browser cookies showed the survey page was linked from ozbargain or anything lol

      • +1

That… And a few other clowns have told PayPal that other OzBs got it!!!

  • I emailed paypal and they sent me an official email stating they believed the link I used was from ozbargain and it is not a legitimate paypal site. Worth a shot but didn't pay off :(

  • +1

Paypal has benefited from the promotion of deals on OZB, particularly deals on eBay. If they want to withhold the five bucks - fine - but to attack OZB for promoting this deal is biting the hand that feeds it.

    • They never asked for their deals to be posted on OzBargain though. Its like you doing work for me for free, I wont say no, you can do what you want as long as its legal and doesnt damage my business, but dont ask for anything in return.

I doubt this is biting the hand that feeds it, since eBay and Paypal still dominates the industry, Im 100% sure that 95% of the people here will continue to use paypal for purchases. Ozbargain is also only a small percentage of internet buyers.

      • will continue to use paypal

Will, and have several times already!

      • +2

Paypal's email seems to imply that the OP acted dishonourably ("found a loophole"). This is not a generous position to take, especially considering that they have benefited from the OZB community in the past, and will no doubt continue to benefit from it in the future.

As I said, I have no problem with PayPal revoking the deal; but they could have taken a more conciliatory approach in doing so. After all, as you point out, we are the minnow and they are the whale.

  • I was very lucky to get 2 x $5, for a personal and business account. Didn't know what to spend the $5 on and sometimes I couldn't use the balance when making paypal payments but I have have managed to have the cash withdrawn into my bank account.

    • You'll be able to use it as a part payment if you convert to AUD.
But that doesn't matter because you've now withdrawn it!!! ;)

  • Thanks snoop!

  • +1

I kind of forgot about this and I realised I never got the credit. Is it worth pursuing?

  • Hate paypal and ebay - hope someone new comes along and smashes their redulicious charges

    • +4

      Nothing worse than redulicious charges
