    another day another dick deal.

  • +2

    boss research OP

    • +13

Copy / paste boss is more like it, did you not notice the link to the source at the bottom of the post?

      • cleary i did not ^^

    Good work

  • +1

What's the dick smith TV like on the mayhem200 deal? Thinking of getting one. Any users ?

    • +1

I got it a few weeks ago for $537 for my girlfriends place expecting it to be sh*t compared to my Panasonic VT50 55", but it's actually very good. Well worth $599 (which is what it costs with this deal, not $499). The only thing I can fault it on is the black levels in night footage, but that's a small thing. For most stuff it's fine, good even. Perfectly acceptable as your main TV unless you're a finicky videophile.

  • +1

Wish I could give bonus likes fire the effort put into this. Great work!

  • -1

nothing good but +1 for the effort OP.

  • scored a pair of those sony XB400 headphones. seems to be the lowest price in history.

  • +24

sigh So I'm looking for a "low-mid end" 4K TV and saw a couple of what seem pretty good deals at Harvey Norman over the weekend ($1,800-$2,000). So when I see this deal, I'm amused once again by the discounting tactics:

    SAMSUNG 55" (139cm) Ultra HD LED TV UA55HU7200 - $2749 listed (Save $500 with Discount at $2,249)

    BUT:

Harvey Norman has it for $1,947 on special (delivered and installed apparently).
The Good Guys are $1,989 as advertised
(JB HiFi have what I believe is an improved model? UA55HU8500 for $2,448 with no discount / special advertised).

So this leads me to believe that DSE do not sell it usually at $2,749 (or they are marking it up a good $800) and the Save $500 is a joke.

  • Ah, these prices are AFTER the Mayhem discount is applied… I got excited to get a EOS 700d for $400 for a second (if that $200 canon cashback still works too)

    • +2

I believe it's $150 cash back on that model

  • anyone used the airbeatz? any good or is their something better or cheaper out there.

    • I have the Airbeatz shower speaker, and happy with my purchase. I'd say go for it

  • +48

Just be aware that they jacked the prices up. Some are even more expensive even after the discount compared to before ~ 2am.

UNIDEN Guardian W/les Security was already $299
SONY Floor Standing MUTEKI MHCV3 was already $279
    Panasonic 60" (152cm) Full HD 3D Smart LED TV TH-60AS700A was ~ $1350
CANON EOS 700D Single Lens Kit Was $749

These are the ones i remembered and these were the prices before the discount

So dont be deceived as most of the items were at there normal price. Kinda misleading on Dicks behalf

Unity1 was also online at that time and he can confirm too

    • +14

Possible to raise this to ACCC if that's the case?

      • +10

And i posted this deal and the requested it to be removed when they hiked the price up : Panasonic TH-60AS700A 60" 1080p 3D Smart TV $1058 (Save $300)

        • +2

They did something similar the other day as well. The deal was 10% off the entire site (No exclusions). When I first checked the site, it had new iPads as well and 10 minutes later, they had taken only the new models (iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3) out. Rest were still there and one could get 10% off. This is dodgy practice.

      • +31

Possible to raise this to ACCC if that's the case?

I just came back from a Night Shift overtime but will consider giving the ACCC a call to get some advice as i dont like this dodgy business

        • +1

          Or try A Current Affair.

        • +21

          @luke73:

A current affair don't give two f#cks. They only care about when an old lady gets unfairly treated in her government house because seems like thats the viewer market.

        • +72

          @carlitos:

Ive contacted the ACCC, they took my info. A senior officer will call me back to get the evidence needed (i.e as per my above post) as they agree this is misleading advertising

Ill let you guys know the outcome

        • +2

@easternculture: Interesting post if you haven't already come across it. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/169562

        • +3

          @easternculture:

Great stuff, I've been wanting to call them but am too lazy.

Hopefully dick gets what's coming to him and stops dicking around once and for all.

        • +3

          @easternculture:

Good work EC. Hope dick gets a kick up the arse for this BS.

        • +5

@easternculture: Good on you easternculture. You are always a reliable member here.

        • So the reply from NSW Fair Trading was dated 6 Nov 2014 ….. and here we are some 10 days later with DishonestDick Smith Electronics up to more allegedly shifty stuff - I agree with some of the other posters that DishonestDick should end up with a DCT (Dont Come Tomorrow) from OzBargain!

        • ACCC won't do anything, but the sentimental feeling of doing something 'pro-active' is nice… department of fair trading? Haha what a joke.

It's scummy what dicksmith do, but they can do it with impunity, and they continue to do it because consumers that think it's scum business practice still shop there… Look what CBA got away with.

        • There might not be much they can do. E.g. Let's say they sell a widget at $50 half price from $100. Next week price is back to normal. So now they're giving a special based off a coupon code $50 to have it back to the same price.

They're right in saying it's a special given if you don't apply the code the usual price of $100 applies. Confusing as all hell though.

        • @sparkyglo:

that response by FT is pretty damn pathetic

NSW Fair Trading are satisfied with the response from Dick Smith and as such propose to take no further action although, will retain the information you provided on the complaints management database which is used to monitor marketplace trends and practices, and assist with the development of consumer protection strategies

DSE have done this soooooooo many times.. i hope something actually gets done about this.. kudos to those that keep reporting them!

        • @CVonV:

the easiest thing to do is have an embargo against DS on ozbargain. im sure we constitute a significant percentage of their online sales base

If the online sales manager misses his next bonus, then theyll wake the eff up

        • @CVonV:

Done what? Having another sale? Their sale today might not be as good as the one yesterday for certain items or maybe any of their items. Just because they had a bigger sale yesterday doesn't mean this sale has to be bigger.

        • +1

          @ozhunter:

jacked up the prices before a sale only to have the end price be more expensive than it was initially

        • @Martijn:

Dick Smith hasn't had anything to do with Dick Smith Electronics since he sold the business to Woolworths in 1982.

        • @easternculture:

I thought ACCC only intervene where there are numerous complaints. Other avenue is raise a claim with NCAT, that way DSE rep will be inconvenienced when called before the tribunal.

Similar story happened with chemist warehouse

        • The ACCC has contacted me to provide them with a report on DSE from a previous posting. I need to now set some time aside to write a report.

        • @clarky:

nice. Still waiting for them to contact me

      • eagerly waiting for what accc has to say!

      • +4

Why would this be ACCC issue? It is a legitimate pricing strategy, is it not? Whether you like it or not, it is a separate issue

    • +5

Gee you mean they do this as well as post specials here that don't exist in the shop on the same day that I get there? Colour me surprised …

Actually you know what I'm getting so sick of this dodgy retailer getting away with such rubbish (and I do mean they do it seemingly on a constant basis): if someone wants to give a reasonable information source where the price history can be shown I will more than happily call ACCC.

    • That 40" Dick Smith TV was about $270 a few evenings ago. But I won't neg because of the OP's carefully detailed post.

    • DishonestDick Smith Electronics - no surprises at their deceptive practices! @EasternCulture - Good work contacting the ACCC - Did they mention which year they were planning to call you back, lol. (Shakes head)

    • +3

Would anyone be interested in helping me write a monitor for DSE's shady pricing tactics?

      • +1

Pardon my ignorance, what do you mean by "write a monitor" ?

        • +5

I assume something like camelcamelcamel.com that tracks the historic prices of things on the dicksmith website.

        • +8

Yeah sorry. I want to save every price on DSE every six hours and whether it's on special or not, then we can track how the prices change over time.

        • +4

@Voltagex - No need to apologise, would love to help or share the workload - there definitely appears to be "hair" on DSE's pricing practices or "technical database errors" as they are likely to claim?

      • this has already been done

unfortunately, it seems like they're both no longer up :/

but please go ahead and restart this great project!

      • Yep…

    • +2

Has anyone actually verified that the overnight price hike wasn't due to yesterday's sales ending?

I get at least one email per day from DS, these emails are always for a sale, these sales are almost always for one day only.

      Here's a pic showing most of yesterday's offers http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/77537/26575/20141117_10…

Including 25% off canon cameras, 50% off security, tv sales etc

      • This is a good point that hasn't been mentioned before. At the very least it will be what DSE claim is happening and is a suitable "OUT"

      • CANON EOS 700D Single Lens Kit is listed at $748.50.

        748.50 / 3 = 249.5
        249.5 * 4 = 998

        Looks about right.

        • yes but their Twin Lens Kit is usually that price too.. until they jack it up of course by a couple hundred

    • +2

Agreed. If you want more proof just on today's prices:

Sony headphone MDR-XB400 blue is $48.99
      http://www.dicksmith.com.au/sony-extra-bass-headphone-blue-d…

Sony headphone MDR-XB400 black is $27.99
      http://www.dicksmith.com.au/earphones-headphones/sony-extra-…

The blue one is included in the MAYHEMPRICE promo, so it comes down to $24.49 after "discount", while the black one is not included in the promo.

  • +1

Less than impressed this time. Looking for a smallish (32" or 28") TV for the kids' play room. Dick has a 28" for $199 "on special". Kogan has one for $189 regular price that includes PVR functionality.

    • +3

Are you negging the deal because Dick Smith is $10 dearer than kogan? Really?

You don't think there should be any price difference from a company that runs physical stores and a company that sells only grey imports from Hong Kong?

    • Also that kogan $189 tv is after a $10 discount and doesn't include shipping!

It's not the regular price, it says save $10,was $199 and then plus delivery. https://m.kogan.com/au/buy/28-led-tv-hd/

      • -1

nice try dicksmith and kogan reps

  • +1

    Is this (for $1,947)

    http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/samsung-ua55hu7200w-55-in…

    the same as dick's SAMSUNG 55" (139cm) Ultra HD LED TV UA55HU7200 - $2249

  • +28

Oh looky - Galaxy Note 4 went from $899 to $949. Thanks Dicks!

    • +9

      shameful.

    • +6

Dicksmith has/seems like it has a sale every day. Doesn't anyone think that after the sale has ended, they put it back up to its normal selling price then have a different deal the next day(eg. 10% off storewide on Monday, then a spend $500, get $x on Tuesday)

      • +2

It seems to not occur to most on here. It's so much easier to jump on board the neg train..

    • I bought this from them yesterday for $224.25 :http://www.dicksmith.com.au/multifunction-printers/samsung-sl-c460fw-colour-laser-printer-dsau-xp3662 for 224.25. Its gone up $299 again and it says "One Day Only, Unbeatable Sale!" at $299.00!!!!

      • That's why I always use "cache:" to check google cache to see if it changed price! DS price is just a joke!

  • +3

    dodgey price fixing again

    • +20

That's not what "price fixing" is. It's misrepresenting the price. Big difference.

(Price fixing involves competitors agreeing on price).

        • +4

Why did you use the wrong word if you knew it in the first place?

        • So obvious you got it wrong, eh? I used small words because you clearly didn't understand.

  • +2

Positive for the effort of OP Negative for DSE faking their sale.

  • +5

    misleading advertising

  • +3

    ..more like Panasonic RECT

  • +6

Standard dick process: increase price, then discount.

  • Are these some big dick deals?

    • No there are no big dicks here

      • speak for yourself.

  • +3

    Someone report this to ACCC

    • +3

      Got a phone?

      • +1

I'll just use my Unide.. Oh right they jacked up the price.

  • +13

I'm really starting to dislike the dick …

  • +13

I am glad we have some alert Ozb members to notice dicksmith's shame full tactics

  • Is there a site like camelcamelcamel that will track local retailer prices ?
That would be a neat way to gather evidence that the price jacks every time before they offer an 'Indian giver' discount

  • +17

I hope DS Rep Reply, why they always jack there prices up on SPECIAL events

    • Hahaha monty going into damage control.

      • +2

Lol yeh I don't think he will reply. Wait till the rep post his next post. Hmmmm

        • +4

There will be a lot more scrutiny (and probably negs) on anything the DS rep posts here from now on, including Eneloops.

        • +1

          @snoo: rightly so

        • @snoo: No… not the eneloops

  • +3

    Speaking of increasing price:
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/playstation-4/sony-ps4-console-d…

(I know it's most likely pricing error, but just for lul :p)

    • +4

Nope they are preparing stuff for their next sale $400 off on PS4 + The Last of us bundle… Hurry up!!!

    • +2

Looks like they failed to discount it after increasing the price :)

BUY THEM TOGETHER AND PAY ONLY $999!!!
Markdown MAYHEM, brought to you by reliable Dick.

  • +1

No that i am sticking up for Dicks… but the prices that seem to have gone up are the ones that were one day special yesterday…

    eg canon camera
    security items

hence they came off special and now these $50-$500 deals are based on the standard price..

not that im saying this is the right thing, but this is generally what happens…

its like Myer having a special ticket on a TV 2,000 then they have a Saturday only Deal 20% off TV's…. they dont go and discount 20% off the $2,000 special price they would take it off the $3,000 standard price they had before their special ticket was up

again im not saying this is right, but just what you see 9 times out of 10 from retailers.

  • +1
