Free 30 Days Subscription for Netflix Australia

4511

Hi guys, as most you guys know Netflix is rolling its service to Australia today. They are offering a 30 day subscription for free as a free trial. Their normal rate starts at $8.99/month with a limit to 1 device per subscription. It goes up to $14.99 for their premium service with up to 4 devices that can play movies at the same time with ultra HD quality and more.

There are 3 types of subscription, basic, standard, and premium. You can try any of them for free. I am personally trying their premium service, as it is for free anyway. You will need your email address and credit card for the subscription(you won't get charged until your trial ends). Enjoy!

        • The nice thing is that the DNS switching services work well with the apps.

I noticed my FetchTV app was happy to browser the Canadian Netflix store.

Stan is on Chromecast, and the old laptop you've got plugged into your TV. That's plenty for OzBargainers.

        • @mgowen: Isn't Chromecast streaming from a mobile device? As above, it's not something I'm too keen on when other services natively support many home theatre devices. It wouldn't be entirely uncommon for whoever was streaming the content to leave the house and interrupt things in the process.

We don't have a laptop hooked up to the Home Theatre, and have no plans to do so, particularly not when I have dedicated devices to serve multimedia.

I'm sure it works for many people, but Stans market reach is impacted by not being on more hardware.

        • +2

@Smigit: For services with apps that support it Chromecast will pull the content directly from the web. The mobile device just works as a remote control to tell it what movie, when to start, pause, etc. Works great with Google Play movies, Quickflix and ok with Presto (their app is in need of some serious work).

      • Getflix and region switching and it doesnt block rooted devices from useing the damn android app like stan does.

also streaming is better on netflix even on my bad connection i can stream SD without any problems unlike stan.
while you could say thats just my internet i have been streaming 480p on youtube for over a year now aswell as streaming pirated movies sometimes unlike stan which didn't work very well at all for me.

while stan's price is a sweet spot netflix with the ability to region switch with on ly the need of getflix or unblockus jumps the amount of content way past the others.

for example i'm a fan of a T.V series called stargate and while i was checking out different content on each region it had every season on UK netflix while US didn't.

But of course AU netflix has only JUST launched so can expect more content to be added like stan and presto.

  • Can you mirror to Apple tv using AirPlay?
Would be good if there was an Apple TV app

    • There is an appleTV app, It is just hidden for Australia. If you have a US VPN it magically appears.
Once Netflix is available here it will be visible on Aussie AppleTVs, but it might have to wait until the next ATV update.

      • +1

Update has happened, app is there. If you don't see it, manually update your Apple TV

        • +1

Mine updated last night and I was so excited to see Netflix there!

        • Thanks dude!
Any reason I'd rent movies through iTunes anymore?

        • @yoyomablue:

If you want to watch any of the 120+ (out of 150ish) best- selling recent movies that are NOT on Netflix.

          http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/03/these-are-the-most-popu…

        • @GordonR:

To be fair, they weren't around to buy up the local rights, so it fell to Foxtel to slurp them up.

But having a look at the list, there's not a lot I'd wanna watch anyway. A lot of the movies are big screen blockbusters which you'd wanna watch at the cinema anyway.

        • @GordonR:
Fair enough. But if I combine the HD Netflix subscription with free HD movies on YouTube that people upload, I should be covered in many instances

      • Netflix popped up on the PS3 last night for those who are interested.

  • -3

Can anyone confirm that Australian Netflix has identical content to the US version? I read somewhere we would only have limited content.

    • +14

Confirm? it was never going to have the same shit.

if you want to watch US version you use getflix and switch region.

      • +6

Rough figures from the SMH article shared by Rivmeister:

        US - 8500 titles
        Canada - 4400 titles
        Australia - 1100 titles

    • +6

Yeah we've only got 7000 thousand less titles than the US.

      http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/hometech/how-the-australi…

      • +6

Imagine fairfax media (the owner of stan) posting a negative article about netflix…

I've been using the US and UK one for years, and I'm really impressed with the Aussie library. There are a few shows there that aren't on the US one - I don't think I've seen vikings on any other region.

        • +9

Yeh, fancy doing an article on pointing out the fact that Aussies are being charged the same price to get an eighth of the content. How biased.

        • +18

          @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

Notice that there is no mention of the size of the library of Stan or other Aussie services? That's the bias.

I think this is a pointless argument all together. It's not quantity that attracts customers (otherwise youtube would be the winner) it's quality.

        • +3

@sickllama: Agreed. There are a lot more decent titles on the AU Netflix than I was expecting.

    • -1

      Confirmed

Welcome Netflix, sad sad day for Foxtel!

    • +3

Considering they've cut their prices in half, it's a great day for consumers! - Theyre probably still raking in the millions.

      • +6

No argument there. What Australia needs is more competition between the providers in every sector, not only in online entertainment.

        • +1

I'm with ya. The consumer choice movement. Let's get it happening!

    • Now all we need is Hulu to come to OZ. Netflix has a huge db of TV shows/movies, but the latest seasons are only on Hulu. If Hulu comes to OZ and Netflix or Hulu get live channels then that would be all over for Foxtel.

      • +1

        Cheers to that day!

  • +2

    Finally its here!

  • I searched but couldn't find a list of devices that can play Netflix. Can someone send a link to that info ?

    • You can watch instantly from any Internet-connected device that offers a Netflix application, such as gaming consoles, DVD and Blu-ray Players, HDTVs, streaming players, home theater systems, phones and tablets.
The specific list doesn't appear available yet https://www.netflix.com/watch?locale=en-AU

      • +1

Unless, like silly me, you bought an LG Smart(???) TV. LG Smart(???) TV's for the Asia/Pacific Region have been set to BLOCK Netflix. I haven't had time to check if I can access Netflix Au yet.

        • Mine had a new firmware update and has netflix app now works fine

        • -1

Woo-Hoo!!!!!! Just checked & Netflix App is now on my LG Smart Tv!! Now I can watch seven & a half thousand fewer titles on Netflix Au … I'm so, so happy!!!

      • Never mind I read the FAQ's.

  • -1

Does anybody know whether Apple TV has an app for Netflix AU?

    • Read above

      • -2

        could've just answered the question.

        • +5

Couldn't people not be so bloody lazy and just READ.

  • Will use up everyones email and credit card in the house to extend the trial.

    • Is not just once per household ?

      • +1

I don't think they care about your physical address. Besides, they can't deny you for using 7A, 7B, 7C. What if there actually was?

    • -8

      Stop being stingy. It's unattractive.

      • +3

Get used to it, this is OzBargain.

      • +1

I wasn't aware Ozbargain is now a dating site?

    • Could buy prepaid credit cards, use it for grocery shopping and renew netflix trial once every month?

    • -1

We finally get Netflix and the first thing you want to do is rip them off? Go figure.

  • Excellent. A month is long enough for me to have a House of cards binge, actually I would only need a few days on the free trial ..

  • I've been tried a few websites for trials and I found Netflix has the most contents and the most smooth in streaming.
I will be one of subscribers until Foxtel price comes down a bit. Great!

  • -5

    Okay

  • +2

Until I get decent internet speeds I can't even consider a service like this.

    • +1

Define decent? I only connect at about 6-7mbps and I can have two streams running in my house.

      • I'm on ADSL2, sometimes i can't even stream youtube in SD, of course I'll give the trial a go, it is free after all :)

    • +3

It's a free trial, so try it. I use Netflix fine on a 2Mbps connection.

  • +1

In the free trial can you switch from the basic to standard to premium plans to see the difference in quality and if you can stream them on your connection?

    • +3

Just sign up to the top tier and look out for HD or UltraHD to pop up if your service supports it (and if the content is available in those resolutions).
Netflix automatically adjusts the stream to match your bandwidth, it's not like Youtube where you can demand a certain resolution.
Got a feeling that UltraHD is only available on Windows 8 (confirm anyone?)

      • +1

You do have some control over the quality. On the website log into your account and there are quality settings. We dropped ours down to force SD since HD was burning through our quota and we're on an exchange where the highest data allowance among the providers servicing it is about 250GB. If you select a level higher than your connection will support, or leave it on auto, it'll transfer at a rate appropriate to the connection.

        • +2

But you can only force to a lower quality, you can't force to a higher quality.

        • @scubacoles: Correct. Chances are it wouldn't work very well anyway if you could force a higher quality than the connection supported.

      • Assuming the Australian service is identical to that from the US, UltraHD is only available on devices with the HEVC decoder built in, so pretty much just Smart TVs at the moment to the best of my knowledge.

I have the four user subscription from the US, and 100Mbps internet. I've never been able to stream in 4K on anything but my Samsung UHD TV, and the shows that play happily in 4K on my TV appear as "Super HD" on all of my computers - both Windows 8 & OS X.

    • Yes

  • +1

    Just be aware of this:

"do nothing and your membership will automatically continue at the monthly subscription rate. "

    • Can you unsubscribe immediately?

      • I think if you cancel, you lose access immediately.

        • +2

          Bollocks

      • +9

You can, just did this. Cancellation email says the membership lasts until the end of the 30 days, after which it will be cancelled.

        • +14

          UnBollocks. Ill sign up!

        • Cheers, happy to be wrong

  • +5

Don't forget you can sign up and pay for Netflix using iTunes.. Use discount iTunes cards to get Netflix cheaper!

    • +1

Can you do this for us netflix?

      • +2

If you have a US iTunes account and US iTunes cards sure.

        • I dont think this can be done for Aus Netflix?!?

        • +2

@ezza: Why not? It's the same sign-up process, and apps are now on Apple TV for Netflix.

        • @Linkwick:

I believe someone above has mentioned its not on ATV as yet, well the Aus version that is

        • How do you get discount US iTunes cards?

        • +1

@ezza: It is now on ATV, since the software update last night.

        • @hashtagbargain:

ahhh right!! thanks for confirming.. i may need to check this out later on at home as i have loads of itunes credit from sales at harvey norman etc!

          thanks!

    • Great tip!!

    • Shame. Doesn't seem like we can pay for Netflix using Google Play.

      • survey's paying for it would be cool….

    • Don't u need Apple TV to sign up to Netflix to be able to pay through iTunes or can you do this without? If so how?

      • Yeah, how do you pay it with iTunes cards?

  • Can you buy the premium and share it with a friend?

    • +5

      First Rule of Fight Club!

    • +1

      yes you can

    • +1

Yeh if u get premium 4k subscription u can get up to 4 screens. As long as everyone plays fair u could technically split it 4 ways

      • You can have 4 screens at a time, so it's possible to have a few occasional users and a couple of regular users, sharing the same account. I have a US 2 screen HD account, I only ever use one screen at a time, two of my relo's in the UK could use one screen each in their evening, and a friend here too in the evening here!

  • +21

RIP Foxtel, and by that I mean Rot In Pieces.

    • +2

Foxtel won't die anytime soon as they have a huge customer base from Sports channels. Until the day Netflix streams live channels (cnn, sports etc), it will still be an addon for many families. Every person I know uses Netflix and Foxtel together.. It's good that Foxtel have come down in price, hopefully they can bring down prices further from the Netflix squeeze… They been screwing the public with their monopoly for too long.

      • Who knows what the next rights deals for the AFL and NRL will bring… once they're easily available online (and most people have their TVs on the web), it's game over for Foxtel.

        • +2

well the nice thing is that you can watch NRL on livestream.tv with a DNS switcher….

Netflix have said they have no interesting in Live Tv (sports or otherwise). The FetchTV box is quite attractive. You get Netflix app + extra channels.

But if it's local footy you want, then it's freeTV/Foxtel/online streaming.

        • @supabrudda: It's really only a matter of time before livesports get integrated into the subscription web TV services. Can't wait to see Foxtel disappear. :)

      • +1

        Meh, it's only sport.

    • yep, perfect for those of us that don't watch sport and are horrified at paying for something that still shoves advertising in your face.

  • -6

I cancelled my sub within 5 minutes.

It has a very limited library of titles.

No Archer … no Fringe …
