Free 30 Days Subscription for Netflix Australia

4511

Hi guys, as most you guys know Netflix is rolling its service to Australia today. They are offering a 30 day subscription for free as a free trial. Their normal rate starts at $8.99/month with a limit to 1 device per subscription. It goes up to $14.99 for their premium service with up to 4 devices that can play movies at the same time with ultra HD quality and more.

There are 3 types of subscription, basic, standard, and premium. You can try any of them for free. I am personally trying their premium service, as it is for free anyway. You will need your email address and credit card for the subscription(you won't get charged until your trial ends). Enjoy!

  • So unless i have a 4k tv, there is no benefit (other then 4 streams vs 2) of paying the extra $3 for the premium plan?

    • +1

      Yes that is correct

  • +1

i heard they will continually add things, the trials only available till the end of april, presto i noticed has intergrated with my tbox on the same day as netflix released and its unmetered with bigpond telstra, so i might be checking out presto, but i signed up to netflix can cancel any time so thought id see whats on offer

  • I also just noticed if you signed up for the premium ($14.99) it wont let you change it back to $11.99 until after your first bill?

    • +1

I guess i could cancel and sign back up with a new email address

    • mine allowed me to change back to the $8.99 plan ?

      • Mine says the plan will change after my first billing date

  • A shame everyone has already seen House of Cards.
Guess I'll save my free trial until June, when Orange is the New Black is released :-)

    • +2

      Everyone?

  • Sweet, 7 months free nextflux. err what is it netflix :)
1 month free here, and 6 months with optus for free.

  • +1

does apple tv have netflix enabled yet?

  • +6

Awesome! I can finally use my 100mbit service NBN :)

    • lol at downvotes for saying I have nbn :)

      • +3

Brought you back to 0. I got your back, bro.

    • +3

Unlimited fibre plan can finally get tested!

  • Should I wait until later to sign up to this when there is possibly more content? How long is the free month going to be available? Or should I sign up now and try and scam another free month later as well by changing CC/email address or something?

    • +1

It'll always be available.. it's a standard thing for Netflix around the world.

    • Just sign up now with one card, then sign up again with another card.

Most people have a bank or credit card at the minimum so its easy.

  • Anyone know how long this deal is going to last for?

    • +3

      Forever. It's standard practice.

      • +1

Thanks. Just makes me wonder why it would be a deal then.

        Guess it's still exciting news!

        • +1

It's a new deal to people in Australia, started today! Expect a repost in 6 months time ;)

  • just logged in in LG webOS Smart TV, worked like a charm. all i need now change the DNS to US so can watch moar

  • For people using Ubuntu (and probably other flavours of Linux) you can watch Netflix using Chrome (v37+). Firefox isn't supported and all you'll see if a screen mentioning "Instant Watching System Compatibility" that only suggests Windows, Mac and Chrome OS are supported…

    • I think netflix uses silverlight for its desktop version.

    • I'm still watching in Firefox with whatever the wine hack is called that lets you install Silverlight.
Chrome doesn't (or at least didn't) get HD and on my machine the scaling was all wonky when going to full screen.

  • +1

Uses m$ silverlight on the pc, must uninstall silver light and install again message (firefox and IE)
Hmm I have the updated version of silverlight and no workie on the workie laptop, proxy might block it.
    Will try at home.

  • You can always use your iPhone, very good quality.

  • Just subscribed for the local trial…Homeland Season 4 is missing…that's like a 2014 show and it's not even there. FAIL !

    • +2

Netflix is always a season behind… This is not the service you're looking for to get up to date content unless it's a Netflix Original (ie Better Call Saul, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black etc etc)

      • right, didn't realize…so, is there a service that streams all of the latest tv shows?

        • +2

Hulu plus, in the USA, you can use a smart DNS provide to watch here, getflix, unotelly, unblockus, for like $2 a month. Hulu plus still has adverts though, they want your money and the advertisers. Yuk.

        • +3

          Locally
          Foxtel Go…(needs subscription to Foxtel)
Maybe Presto? (has a relationship with Foxtel, so I suspect it's delayed)

          Internationally
Hulu Plus (needs subscription and VPN/DNS redirect)
          BBC iPlayer (needs VPN/DNS redirect)
HBO Now - when it launches (needs subscription and VPN/DNS redirect)

          Copyright Infringing
          Popcorn Time

  • Will the XBOX one allow me to use AU netflix account and a US netflix account ? or is there a better way of haing both regions content ?

    • +2

      You don't need 2 accounts!!!
One account then switch regions with your DNS unblocker…

  • +1

Their documentary selection seems to be rather mediocre.
Anyone knows the best subscription service to get doco contents other than Foxtel (Discovery, History, Nat Geo, BBC Knowledge, etc.)?

    • Get the Hola Unblocker extension. US one has a lot of great docos.

    • +1

yeah im thinking of ditching foxtel and upgrading my internet allowance, but only if access to all those docos is possible

      • +2

You're on ozbargain. I believe part of the terms if you have to ditch foxtel.

  • Guys - you don't need to muck around with DNS unblocker or router setting if you're not familiar (like I am ;p). Just use a VPN service like Premiumize, which I purchase when it's on special price, AUD$ 80 for 15 months. They have an apps attached to the chrome browser which can be turned on and off by simply clicking it. By doing this, I was able to watch Netflix US contents and paying $ 11.99 for 4 screens and HD screens.

On top of that, I can watch contents from ABC, CBS, AMC and BBC without any restriction. Shop around and do you research, there are heaps of providers on internet.

  • Anyone else find $1 from bank account to Netflix?
Could this a system verifying account details?

  • +2

is it bad to think about negging coz netflix has always been a free 30 day trial, whether you're in oz or not? so not a bargain lol

    • yeah it's the exact same site and library, the only new thing is you don't need a VPN though those are free and easily obtainable.

  • I signed up to Ultra for the free trial which means I can watch 4 screens at once. Does this mean I can give the login details to family so they can use it? Or is it somehow IP based etc.

    • It can be shared, you can watch in multiple locations.

  • hmm.. not that many shows. wanted to watch Bobs Burgers and Parks and Rec

    • Both available on the American Netflix. If you're watching it on Chrome, use the Hola VPN extension and change it to the US.

Newbie question.. With the streaming, do you eventually have a downloaded file like an avi that can be copied to other devices such as a smartphone for later viewing? If not how can you get the content on a phone without streaming over mobile network

    • I believe it's all stream i.e. you must have access to internet.

    • yeah it streams little chunks of very encrypted data at a time.
the only way to view stuff later is to digitally record the screen, which is probably against the terms of use.

  • This might have already been covered somewhere else but what are the best devices to stream netflix on?

I have a few WDTVs but they appear not compatible. Is there something that does Netflix and streams from NAS? Thanks

    • You're on ozbargain and you don't have a chromecast?!

    • It works on my wdtv. There's an app under services. Not sure if you might have to update your wdtv or change it to US setup? I can't remember how I got it but it may have been a region option as I've been accessing Netflix with unotelly for a while

  • :( doesn't work if you've had a free US Netflix trial.

  • +2

Looks like a great deal because it'll probable only take you 30 days to watch what Netfilix are offering Australia .

Check out “Differences in content between Netflix AUS and US "

  • I have been charged $11.99, has anyone got charged a fee?

    • I noted a $1 deduction which is presumably a check/hold due to using a credit card. $11.99 is more odd, have you used a netflix trial previously (US trial)?

      • No, have not used us version before.

      • How does it know if you have? Same email?

    • I had a fee from Netflix on a pending transaction but it was not processed, it disappeared.

I'm running this through a PS3 connected to an LG Smart TV via 2.5 Ghz wireless. My connection is with Internode & peaks at about 1.1 Mbps. I'm able to stream both SD & HD content with no glitches or stuttering at all. Very happy! FWIW, I recently upgraded my home router as I had glitch issues streaming from my laptop to the TV via wireless (DLNA). Upgrading the router made a huge difference (an Asus DSL-AC68u).

I love the Netflix interface, wish there was more content though.

Here's a link to a screenshot of my Wan bandwidth monitor taken whilst streaming a show (not sure if SD or HD)
    http://i.imgur.com/jUWJGJ7.jpg

It averages 1.1 Mbps & peaks at 1.3 Mbps for a single second. They must be using an Aus based CDN for me to be able to stream it so quickly.

  • where can i find what movies are on offer?

  • -3

What advantage does netflix have over torrents?

    • +4

Well its legal for a start.
There's no effort involved, just select and play. No extra storage hard drives needed.
It saves time trawling the net. It doesnt come with viruses.

      Hows that?

  • Cancelled my US subscription which expired yesterday. Swithed getflix to AU. Subscsribed to 1 month free AU trial using my original (US) account. Cancelled the subscription so it ends in a month. Will re-commence subscription on US Netflix as slightly cheaper. My wife wanted to watch a movie which isn't available on AU netflix. Switched Getflix back to US. Movie available and played. All good. I'm with Internode - content from US Netflix counts against download.

    • Can you check content that is available in both, but start the stream "from the US" and check if it is counted or Quota free?

      • +1

Sorry mate - my wife does all the watching ;-) She's watched a good few shows since Aus launch while set to US and none have been unmetered. I reckon its been up long enough now for people to report if they've had unmetered content while set to US. I reckon all content while set to US region is metered. Funnily enough she asked me to switch to Au last night as she found a good few movies on Au that weren't available in US - and last night's viewing was unmetered.

      • +1

If you start a video up that is on both AU and US and press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S it will list the CDNs being used, this should give you an idea of where it is coming from and if it will be unmetered

  • Poor Quickflix :(

  • Netflix free trial - they billed $1 to my credit card….. Not bloody happy :(

    • +1

it will be refunded. I should not call it "refunded" as the money never go out of your account. It's just a way for them to verify your credit card

    • They didn't bill it, its a "verification scan" basically they ensure that the credit card can be debited from. You will notice that when you purchase something using credit card, it will not show up with the REAL vendor for a few days, as it clears the system. Wait a few days, as it will not show up on your account when things start clearing.

This is a security feature against credit card number generators.

Similar thing happens when you check into a hotel which requires a credit card, they will now actually swipe it, but they will explain to you that no money will be taken, it just verifies and allows you to give them permission to use the card if they need to charge you e.g. mini bar, stolen towels, etc.

  • My US credit card expired today. Tried to pay it through PayPal but seems it declined because of the expired cc, even with a balance.

Signed up for AU trial and changed it to US with unotelly. No hassles.

    Haven't checked bank account yet!

    • Just in case anyone's wondering, the paypal transaction eventually went through (the next day - seems like paypal 'froze' for some reason then came good - even with expired cc attached.

  • I got charged by Netflix $11.32 also!

    • Logged into Paypal to check status and noted following info for trial Aus

      Description
Sign up for recurring billing for your Netflix subscription using PayPal.

You're almost done. You will confirm your payment on Netflix Australia Pty Ltd.

So am assuming no action required - this won't be recurring charged. AU Netflix shows it ending 26/04 tomorrow Sunday. Only Launch day signup email I noticed show "Trial (ends Saturday, 25 April 2015)" - not in alignment, hmm.

So I may cancel tonight to avoid being surprised. Gmail records that I signed up their time, as early as Wed, 25 Mar 2015 22:23:57 -0700 (PDT).

      • Possibly too late for you but if you go into your account and click cancel, before you actually cancel it will tell you how long you have it for.

I cancelled and your access remains until the trial or paid for time runs out anyway, so if you aren't going to keep Netflix you may as well cancel right away and then it will work until the trial ends.

    • Turns out it was a pending transaction that wasn't processed so no I didn't get charged.

protip: sign up using apple tv and you can use iTunes balance to pay for subscription.

buy your iTunes credit via a discount at a number of B&M retailers. cheap Netflix for all.

    • Does not help if your tv is not apple or watch media by PC.

      • Find a friend who has a apple tv then use it to sign up.
Once signed up you can use the login on any platform.

Then use iTunes on ya PC or Mac to add more gift card codes for Netflix to subtract their membership costs.

        • ..possibly a fellow bargainer in an appple discussion. Since I am part way through this opening trial, I wonder if giving them Temp email +password +prepay visa acct, might suffice. then just go on to funding iTunes for vista/led samsung devices. Don't know if it something @Iplau @King Tightarse would generously provide but I'd need to first organise a temp debit-card. Access to discounts, so will keep tip in mind.
