Thanks for bringing the bear back.

    • Yeah!

    • +6

Isnt it strange that the bear came out in winter.

  • 15% off Asus, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Dell laptops till 18th May

  • +1

thrown 8gb ram on it and it can be a very good&cheap work laptop

  • +3

This $214 Notebook will go well with my $199 Netbook

  • +6

is this the same laptop that jbhifi and DSE were just selling, now $46 cheaper? Quad core version too. They just discounted the earlier discount?

I almost bit last time, trigger time now.

    8gb = $80
    120gb ssd = $80-100
    Sell existing ram+hdd = $40-60 back

Total cost between $314 and $354. Not bad!

    …just remember it needs DDR3L 1.35v not 1.5v

    • +1

dick smith don't sell this model theirs is ACER Aspire ES1-411-C2TL only a dual core not quad like this one.

      • +1

Correct, and it cost more than this. Dual core was 30-60% slower in benchmarks if memory serves.

    • +6

I installed the 120gb SSD and 4GB ram last night, it flies! Booted in 6 seconds. Shut down in 4 seconds.

Still a fresh install so no software installed. Would be a bit slower once more software is installed.

I believe HN is selling it for $417. Do they price match JB HI-FI for ACER laptop? If they do, I am thinking of spending another $50 at HN to get AMEX $50 off. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/hot-deals/acer-aspire-es1-411…

    • +1

Yeah they price match as long as there's stock online and in store at jb

    • yep… though they reckon they buy for 380…
      i got two :)
      (also good for TRS)

    • let us know if they agree to price match.

    • I really should get an AMEX card, awesome idea. I've been successful price matching the before, I think it varies from store to store (manager's discretion) as I once shaved heaps off a TV on the proviso I paid in cash before COB that day or offer would be withdrawn.

      • i thought it was in their HN advertising and policy to pricematch?

        • Oh you're probably right, this was years ago, I don't usually shop at hn

    • I've got an AMEX card but had not heard about the $50 off at HN. It's mentioned here: https://network.americanexpress.com/connect/au/en/doe_offer_… which I got to from here:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/192897

    • Could buy a Gift card for $50.

    • I don't think the Amex offer is applicable.

Register by saving the offer to Card and spend $300 or more, online or in-store at Harvey Norman before 05/07/15 to receive one $50 statement credit. Limited to the first 25,000 Cards to register. Exclusions apply. See terms and conditions.

  • very tempted to get the laptop

  • damn. just bought the laptop :(

    • Same :( arghhh damnit JB what a tease

      • Ozbargainers worst nightmare… item going cheaper the next day!

    • Same. Am supposed to go pick it up today!! Going to see if they'll let me return it then re-buy for cheaper price. Or maybe they can just give me store credit for it.

      • +1

Went to pick up my laptop(bought for 299 day before the price drop) today, along with another one bought for the lower price, and asked them to lower the price of the 299 one to match the lower one, as they dropped the price right after. If they were going to refuse, I was just going to return it for the full $299, then go and order another one for $253 anyway, but manager said yup, no problem.

also another tip, if wanting to buy on amex(for points), don't do it instore as JB Hifi charge 2.5% surcharge. Better to buy it online, use paypal to pay via amex with no surcharge, then pick it up at the store.

  • +2

    Ultimate portability?
    How much does it weigh?

    • +9

You're associated apparently, you tell me.

  • Probably a silly question but will this happily accept a 1600mhz ddr3l stick instead of 1333mhz? I know desktop's do, hopefully this just treats it as 1333. (I can get the 1600 a few bucks cheaper)

    • I think it does, my old laptop was i3 first gen and use 1066mhz ram but i stuffed 1333 in it and it run fine ever since, with both old and new ram sticks in it

      • Thanks, good enough for me.

    • +2

      I installed the 4GB 1600 DDR3L ($45 @MSY) - works flawlessly. No hangs or freezes so far.

  • -3

so which one is better of them I mean the cameras,, I can pick any brand all i want is to play with the features and have best photos … appreciate the replies and time give for explanation

    • +2

Best photos are not depend on the cameras. The most important thing is you use the camera properly.
You can choose the most expensive camera you can get with your money, but not the best photos.

    • You don't need an slr if you're asking that question.

      • Yes and no actually. I got to play with one for a day about two years ago, and somehow got hooked and bought one a little bit later. You never really know. If sajidmib is any type of OCD, then he or she will enjoy photography :)

    • Mate, that's a pretty open ended question there!

The best advice is to read some reviews and work out what you are going to use the camera for.

      If you are:

-just taking pictures of food then a shitty little iphone will be fine.
-interested in portable photography with minimal shiz to lug around then it would be worthwhile to check out the olympus omd e-M10.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK1K32K-9nA)
-interested in what should be better pictures but more versatility with shots, then the canon eos1200D (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik1OiWOQ13M)
-if you like wiping your butt with $100 bills, don't mind carrying larger amounts of camera equipment, then just go the Nikon D7100 and buy yourself a few good lenses afterwards..

      disclaimer: nikon dslr fanboy.

  • Are there better batteries I can get for this laptop?

    • Not able to check right now but I doubt it.

Though SSD will give it a boost.

Also the 7.5w CPU should promote good battery life too.

  • To buy or not to buy that's the question

  • -1

i would say not buy , i already got a similar model in HP , called HP G3 250 , almost same specs , it had 2gigs of RAM and sucked , i had to make it 4gigs to be able to just use it for basic needs , guess what , the best part ; it only had 1 RAM slot

    • +3

See my post above. 8gb ram+SSD will transform this bad boy. Real bang for your buck. Only downside is the Acer badge but I'm willing to look past that for this price.

I'm actually considering getting 2, his and hers (the latter won't get ram+SSD upgrade though) - anyone know how cash back works buying 2, would I have to get them in different names?

    • This one has 2 ram slots and you can always put an SSD in as below

      • Which does, his hp or this acer? On my phone right now but I'm pretty sure it's a single slot. Thus the 8gb stick. Can caddy up a 2nd hdd though. I won't bother, got a nas for storage needs :)

        • Sorry my bad, thought it said 2 1gb , but it's 1 2gb. You are correct.

        • 1 ram slot only

  • mmm need something for 47 to get trs at airport just wish they sold decent price ram.

    • buy two!

Time to exercise my Cutibank credit card insurance, aka Complimentary Guaranteed Pricing Scheme . I bought mine from the deal 2 days ago.

Anyone shed some light for me on this?

    edit: argh, $75 price difference.

All Citibank Credit Card cardholders are eligible for the Guaranteed Pricing Scheme when the whole purchase price of a covered product is charged to the cardholder's card and the price difference is more than A$75.

    • I just submitted a claim with 28degree (GE Money) shoppers protection..:) It needed minimum of $10 difference..
      Will see how it goes

      • I have a GE credit card AND a Citibank card - Thanks Ozbargain. But the idiot (me) last week bought one of these for the lady and let paypal choose the commonwealth bank card. I'm guessing no buyer protection for me, Major Fail reporting for duty sir!

      • and now my claim is accepted ..:)

  • I bought this yesterday for $299 from JB. I havent opened the box yet. I guess I better run to the store and ask them to pass the discount. Any idea if they discount retrospectively.

    • +2

      from here: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Documents/Consumer%20Warranties%20…

Unused & Unopened, packaging in good condition (product not faulty) - eg change of mind.
      100% Refund within 30 Days

      • -3

        Yes

If you can stand the sight of sealed box gadget for 30 days then JB rewards you by refunding it in full. But can you resist not opening the box for 30 days?

    • Either they accept your proposal or you get for a refund and grab another one for $46 less :) refund in that condition is entirely acceptable.

      Pays not to be hastey!

    • +4

They refunded the difference under price match guarantee

      • same, regardless if I had opened it or not, I called the store and they said we'll refund the difference as per their 14 day guarantee. no need to bring in the laptop either.

    • Yes they do

  • Question friends,

I recently broken my asus zenbook ux31e screen, is it worth repairing it or buy another laptop? like this perhaps?

  • Personally i would buy this laptop for $150 extra. has a pentium processor vs celeron and is a convertible for tablet like use. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/lenovo/l…

    • Its $167 more when you account for the $39 cash back from acer and for that price you could stick in a ssd and 8 gig stick of ram.

      • Thats true, but for me since i started with computers in 2000, celeron was always the reject processor with faulty silicons, so the security of having a better cpu, with a nice extra touch screen validates this model, also Lenovo is generally more reliable than Acer for laptops. There are a few reasons (for me personally) to move up to the Lenovo, i only suggest for the community my opinions on the products. Just my 2 cents to try help out.

        • +1

im not really sure what pentium is anyway its not an i3 or i5 or i7 might end up being a celeron anyway. And this celeron is a quad core.

        • To be pedantic, the earlier celerons were overclocking beasts, celeron 366 from the late 90s :) your right though, they lost their edge in later years.

        • @paulaus:

Model number suggests it may actually just be a higher clocked celeron. I could be wrong though.

        • +1

@Click_It: that guy only "started with computer from 2000", don't expect him to know much about how good a celeron was in 90's.

        • @alwayseric:

Fair enough, he missed the Celeron glory days didn't he ;)

    • Not quite tablet like. The hinge is not full 360 degrees, only 300 deg, so the furthest it can fold back is until the laptop reaches a 'stand mode'.

      • That's so silly.. Sifnt make that extra 60 degrees :/

    • Better if you are happy with 10" display. Completely different device really. For me this acer appeals more.

      I'm with paulaus

      • Valid point about the screen reduction

        • If I was still commuting on the train everyday I'd be 100% with you ;)

    • $150 extra on a $214 device is quite a lot…

  • what happens with windows with this laptop if you install an ssd, im sure they dont give you a widows cd ??

    • +3

You don't get a CD anymore, not in the last 6-7 years lol. The repair partition is usually invoked through the BIOS, you press a hotkey and it loads the windows install media from the hidden partition.

If you lose that partition or intend to delete it,you have to burn a DVD install media yourself or make a bootable image on USB or flash drive.

There's no need for activation because windows reads the pre-authenticated key directly from the BIOS.

      • Isnt that partition on the hdd that i will remove but and replace with SSD????, so what i just put new ssd in, install windows from USB downloaded from Microsoft site and it should just pick up key because its hidden on bios somewhere……..????

        • I last did exactly that with a then-new Asus F202. Remove hdd, insert ssd, insert USB with Win8, install. I can't remember if it automatically adds the key or skips that part entirely but I remember being impressed at the time.

Going to do just that again once my SSD arrives.

Just bought 2 acers today (using 1 now in standard form) — heaps of bloatware by the way, this is my wifes laptop so I'm just uninstalling it on hers. I'll go all clean-install on mine though.

        • @Click_It: You downloaded 'Windows 8.1 with Bing' from Microsoft website? Are you sure? Do you have a link?

I would like to do a clean install as well (no bloat). But my understanding is bios key will only activate Acer OEM recovery, the MS download will only work with retail Windows versions.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        • @rokufan:

Nope I failed. You are correct. Don't do it :)

        • +1

          @rokufan:

or use ProduKey to find out what the key is before you wipe and install.. that should work too

        • @CVonV: But the key is only for 'Windows 8.1 Bing', you can't download that version from MS website - there is a note on the downloads page that tells you to contact your computer manufacturer.

        • @rokufan:

          hmmm

try this.. it's a torrent for a downloadable bing version.. you'll need to register to view the contents of OP

you may also need to read this guide on how to preserve the OEM activation (apparently not as simple as just saving the key)

        • @CVonV: It's not an issue for me, but thanks for replying. Some people on here have mentioned downloading OS from MS website. I was just pointing out this may not be possible for the Bing version.

    • Windows 8 product key is stored on the bios or somewhere. A new install picks it straight up, easy as.

Or did you mean how to physically install a new windows? Then as scrimshaw said you need usb.

      • +1

Wait so if I replace the hdd with an ssd and install windows onto the ssd, it will pick up the activation key? I want a clean install to get rid of the acer bloatware.

        • Correct. I plan to do the same.

And on a side note, we're basically getting a free Windows 10, I think MS are planning on free upgrades for a few months after initial release for Win7/8 owners. Could be wrong.

        • @Click_It:

The $359 kogan fhd 14" laptop says it's getting free windows 10 upgrade in the email I got today

        • +2

          @CVonV:

Every one is getting a Windows 10 upgrade. Including the Oem license user and the system builders.

    • Just clone the drive thats in the laptop onto the ssd.

      • Yeah, or that. Wonder how much bloat these things have (the main reason I like fresh installs, but nothing uninstalling probably can't fix)

        • There are programs to get rid of the bloatware

      • +2

quick question, how do you clone the HDD to the SSD? IS there an easy way to do this please?

  • thanks OP. bit the bullet and got 1. will replace my ageing acer netbook nicely :)

  • I know many people dont like extended warranty but its $54 to extend to 3 years in JB. Might do it just to be able to get TRS.

    • What's this TRS everyone speaks of?

      • +1

Tourist Refund Scheme - you get 10%GST back when travelling overseas.

        • Just to make this clearer, you will receive the FULL GST amount back, which is 10% of the product. This comment sounds like you get 10% of the GST so just want to clear it up

        • Thanks, learnt something new today.

        • +1

only if you are travelling within 60 days of the purchase, and you need to show the invoice and the item physically to claim it.
