      take the laptop

Claim back the tax at the airport

        • +1

needs to be 300 or over i go again on July 1st so maybe i will find something for $47 to buy at jb by then to make it up to the $300. The pendo windows pad is very light and i only have 7kg carry on allowance so it all matters.

  • Does anyone know how well JB treat returns? Planning to take the laptop in tomorrow for a refund since I ain't too happy about it (low quality sound and wifi drops in a certain room (lol). Btw do I have to head into the branch where I picked up my laptop to get the refund? Cheers.

    • Under consumer rights they don't have to accept a refund just because you opened it and changed your mind.

I picked one up today and it's great. Excellent build quality (nice keyboard, highly responsive touchpad, strong hinges), decent screen, bargain price (don't forget to claim cashback). Naturally not that fast, but upgradable.

      • the main thing is the wifi dropping. It works in certain areas of the house and suddenly decides to die in the room where I would use it most.

        • +1

same issue here. wifi drops out not sure if its a compatible issue or a doa. Tried reinstalling the driver but no luck. Gonna try and get a replacement tomorrow.

        • @soultrain04: Wifi is dropping out randomly all over the place, even a forum thread is onto it, my computer has been dropping in and out for the past 2 weeks for some reason.

        • @TRENT86: Do you have the link to the thread? is it a common issue with acer laptops? or this model in particular?

        • I have the same issue guys - but it's better now, I deleted the device driver and let it reinstall, reboot a few times and now seems to be a stable for the last hour and a half.

I had a similar issue with another Win8 laptop (it worked perfectly on Win7 before that) so I am thinking Win8 is sensitive…and/or the wifi on this laptop.

You will also notice getting close to the modem will alleviate the issue (it did for me), though that doesn't fix the fact that my room is not next to the modem!

    Update for you all:

This thing is running really well / smooth with:

    1) Extra 8GB of RAM ($79 @ MSY, didn't want to wait for postage etc > CREDIT @Falzoni earlier post)
    2) Internal HDD (factory, kept it in to see if I needed the SSD option many talked about)

Works beautifully, I have a 2GB+ Outlook data file, running simultaneously with YouTube HD video of the Supergirl trailer… ;) Hey it was on the main page!

Seems just fine, no lag at all, so if that's your workload, too easy, go get the extra RAM and you're off! No doubt the SSD would make it fly if you need it for your workload, go for it.

    @TRENT86 - legend, thanks man!

    • +1

same setup, just another video on youtube :-)

  • Does anyone has a copy of the webpage with the new price from JB hifi, thought of claiming for price guarantee from my credit card but the page is gone now :(

    • +4

Just in time, I was about to close the tab. Took a screenshot for you - PM me for a link

      • +2

        Nice work!

      • +1

Champ, you're a saviour, I owe you one,

can't PM you though? No option to do that, I think you might have it disabled.

        • Restrictions on new forum memebers - limited replies and no pm'ing for the first 24 hours, apparently.

          Here you go

  • I've upgraded the ram to a 4gb stick as well as a 500gb Samsung ssd. Runs alright.

Just wondering how you enable xmp to allow for the higher ram frequency, can't seem to find it in the bios. Ram is running at 1333 rather than 1600.

    • How did you install the SSD?
Did you clone the original HDD?

      • +1

Clone the drive or create image disc using Acer Backup,
        I did a clone.

        • @voltfox Where did you get Acer Backup please?

      • +2

Yes I did a clone as well, first time using a Samsung SSD, had a lot of issues getting it to recognise in my HDD caddy, trick is to use a sata to usb cable….

Anyways another point, what temps are your CPUs running at, just installed Coretemp, and its sitting at 70 degrees as I write this. I am not too familiar with Bay Trail architect, but isn't 70 degrees a bit high for web browsing? Thats with the battery in, didn't check with just the power cable only.

        • That seems really high. Mine idles at about 34deg and running prime95 gets it to 55deg. May want to take it back if it persists.

        • +1

Hmm, I am not sure why, but it seems coretemp is showing the distance to TJ Max, rather than the actual temp.
ie. what I originally thought it was running at 70 degrees, is axctually 30 degrees (TJ Max being 100). I installed speedfan and it confirmed this, reporting 30 degrees.

Cant seem to figure out why it is doing this, I have coretemp installed on my desktop and displays the temps correctly the way I want it to. Any ideas?

          *solved..sort of

Does anyone use 2 fingers to scroll web pages?

I notice that when scrolling in Google Chrome it is very rough, delayed and un-responsive.

In internet explorer it is very smooth.

Does anyone know a fix to this?

    • +1

I use the 2 finger scroll in Chrome and find it very smooth. No troubles at all.

    • Internet Explorer scrolls smoothly but Chrome hesitates a lot. I only upgraded the Ram to 8GB,

  • Link no longer works me ! I'm a sucker who just decided he wants a new laptop!

Anyone else having an issue with the cash back site from Acer? Seems to come up with text and no model numbers listed anymore….hmmmm

    • +4

sorry no more cash backs its ozbargained

      • +2

        Crap balls!

      • +1

Oh wow does that mean no cashback or do we have to contact acer to process it over the phone?

        • +1

He's joking, the server is down.

  • Ok, set it up yesterday, deleted all the crapware and began windows update at about 8pm. 14 hours later it's still "Installing updates" progress bar about 90%. Is this normal???

    • +1

Mine, before I killed it anyway, took ages too. I assume you're at the blue screen (restart-and-install-updates) ?

I quit at 54%, went into Windows Updates via Control Panel and continued it there and the other 46% finished in about 30 minutes. Something is wrong with the other mode. At 90% this doesn't really help you but at least you know it's not just yours. In future do them manually via CP :)

      • No, I'm in the "Update and recovery" section of the "Settings" accessed through the "Charms (?)".

Just when I was typing this message it finished installing and the option came up to "Restart and install updates". I guess I'm in for another long wait now. Hopefully this is not representative of the general speed of this machine…

        • +1

Ahh okay, yeah I think the Start Screen interface (or "Metro" for the old schoolers) is the same interface as letting it do it on shutdown/restart.

In otherwords, that interface sucks for updating on these laptops, the old "Desktop" interface is much faster.

CP/Desktop method will still do some final instalations on restart which is normal, but it handles the heavy work prior to booting down. Skipping the slow down of what you are now experiencing. More evidence that Microsoft failed when trying to reinvent the wheel (Desktop vs Start interface)

    • +1

I just turned on mine and got this message on screen
      installing updates 61 of 89…
will see how long it takes to finish.

      • ok it's done after 20 min. unless there will be another upgrade…..

        • Go to Windows Update and search for new updates.

        • @nasotrang:
well, it is installing new updates and seem taking much longer time……

  • would it be good enough for Kodi and Steam In-House Streaming (with ethernet) when connected to 1080p display via a receiver?

    • +1

      the Kodi part works great

      • Thanks. Just got one price matched at HN (because I have some HN gift cards). I've actually been waiting for a good deal on the HP Stream 13. This one has much better value!

  • Where's a good place to get RAM for this thing?

  • Whats the code C1WD mean? Is it the same as the dicksmith one:
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/acer-aspire-es…

Is this still a good deal? I need a new laptop in the next week so I am pretty keen

    • +2

The JBHiFi model has a quad-core Celeron N2940 CPU, while the Dick Smith model has a slower dual-core Celeron N2840. Same unit apart from the different CPU's.

  • +3

Thanks Trent86 for posting this great deal. Cheers also to falzoni for suggesting where to get an 8gb ram (it makes such a difference!) and Xenatos for a link to YouTube on how to replace the RAM. As someone who has never installed ram on a notebook or PC before, I managed to replace the RAM in about 10 minutes. I thought about upgrading to SDD too but I'm not going to bother now as I find the laptop fast enough for my needs.

    • Can you please post this link. Not sure why I can only see page 3 and 4 now???

      • +1

Here's the link. Please note that our laptop is a lot easier to replace the RAM than what is shown in the video demonstration. You will have direct access to the RAM as soon as you unscrew the back of the laptop. Whereas the video shows another laptop model where the RAM is bit hidden away.

      @Icer You're welcome :)

  • After reinstalling windows 8.1 on the ssd, I lost all my drivers. Anyone know a quick way to find them and download them all again? Mouse pad isn't even working

EDIT: I found this list so I'll start off by getting these: http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/drivers

  • I just wanted to give a big shout out for this deal, and to those who contribute to the discussion especially on the RAM and SSD upgrade. I bought one laptop as well as the RAM, and I believe I have a 256gb SSD lying around somewhere. Thanks guys!

Has anyone used the HDD as a backup drive in this laptop while using the SSD for C drive?

    • +1

I haven't mainly because I didn't want to sacrifice any battery life from powering 2 drives. That being said I guess my upgrade to 8gb ram also takes a toll on the battery life but I think this was worth it for the performance increase. I didn't need the extra storage.

  • What crap ware should I remove? Anything with Acer in the name. Don't want to delete any drivers. Thanks.

    • +1

Run the Acer Recovery Management app, backup the Recovery Partition and Software & Drivers then delete what you want. Once backed up you can even remove the recovery partition for an extra 14GB of space.

I removed Acer, Cyberlink, Foxit, Tangent, McAfee, Amazon, ebay, etc. Leave anything Broadcom, ELAN, Intel, Realtek, WICDOMM

I used the Recovery disk created to restore onto a SSD, 1. to make sure it worked, 2. I didn't want to eff around cloning or clean installing. It worked fine.

      • decrap tool mentioned earlier in the thread - Decrap is a freeware Windows PC De-crapifier! www.decrap.org. Warning - don't do a auto uninstall, it starts removing drivers. It also creates a system restore point before it starts.

      • I have an interesting question for you.

I bought 2 laptops, I messed up the 1st one and wiped the HDD before installing on SSD (don't ask) then got a surprise when the BIOS embedded key wouldn't work.

I still have another laptop, as-yet-unopened. Using your method, do you think I could restore BOTH laptops or is it smart enough to tie itself to the creation device (and key) only?

        Love to hear your thoughts!

        • locate HDD image/backup software which runs off USB key
boot off USB key and create a backup image of the 2nd laptops HDD
restore USB backup onto SSD (should work on the initial laptop as you havent booted into 2nd laptop)

remember get into BIOS and enable boot of USB
you may need a fairly large USB key for the above 16 may be OK

        • @rusty2k:

Okay here's what I've done and I think it's working good.

Loaded up the untouched laptop, Acer Recovery backup to USB (needed about 16GB or something, I had a 32GB USB lying around)
Running recovery on the other laptop.

All going well so far, and according to comments by Acer on one of their YouTube videos they said restoring a backup one laptop to another (identical model) should work fine.

I knew this would work, my concern was whether it picks up the unique Product Key from the BIOS rather than trying to copy the first one.

So far so good, I'll know for sure soon.

        • @Click_It:

          good luck

        • @rusty2k:

Okay it's done, unique Product ID and Project Key! (using a KeyFinder)

But it's still showing as needing to be activated, and it won't accept the unique product key. So I guess I'm no better off than I was before. Unbelievable.

UPDATE: Okay I attempted the online activation, that failed, so I called Microsoft and tried it over the phone, that failed, so then I gave them my product key (trying to explain it was a "Windows 8.1 /w Bing", but I don't think the grumpy rep understood, saying "IS IT 8.1 or not?") anyway that too failed, he said my key is blocked and I'd need to talk to Acer or go buy a new Windows license.

Happy to say I've done absolutely everything in my power to do this honestly and legally short of PAYING for a new license which I refuse to do. I know Acer are powerless to do anything. Thanks Microsoft, forced me to become a swashbuckler and wear a parrot on my shoulder. Ahoy, me Hearties!

I think I know how these laptops are getting so cheap, the "with Bing" version which Microsoft don't even acklowledge as existing must be cheap or free for manufacturers to purchase, knowing that when something goes wrong we will be forced to buy a license.

        • @Click_It:
Call store in the morning, see if they have any left, take it back and ask for replacement.

I guess, we all should create a backup image of our devices if we don't want to loose the license

does the device have a backup / recovery partition ?

          mentioned in an earlier post
Other option is download Windows 8 from Microsoft and use the USB download tool (also from Microsoft) to make a bootable flash drive and do a clean install.

The key is stored in the BIOS and will validate automagically.

        • @rusty2k:

I was involved in many of those posts, unfortunately these Acers don't do that, won't recognise the key like other laptops do. Myself and at least 3 others found out the hard way (I have every different win8.1 variety available from MS. All fail.

Other Acer forums believe it's because these run "Windows 8.1 /w Bing" and this is not a version downloadable from MS. It has a unique product key to the other oem non-pro versions. (my personal theory is Microsoft sells this "bing" version cheaper, it's offset by no support - which is fine, just would have liked to know in advance)

I'll buy a license when Windows 10 arrives (I expect crazy discounts) Will make do until then.

Despite the hassles it's still a nice laptop :)

        • @Click_It: I think windows 10 is going to be a free upgrade for everyone. Even if your copy of windows was found in a treasure chest ;)

        • @falzoni:

I hope so, and well put ;)

  • anyone know if this is still available at the same price instore?

    • +1

Should be, I got one yesterday in store

  • +2

Wow who thought we would get over 300 comments on this deal lol

    • +1

      Such an amazing bargain! Thanks!

      • +1

Amazing device :) great price. Thanks!

    • +1

Ah yeah sorry about that, half of those were me I think :P

  • +1

Tried to buy this today but not available in store. Jbhifi said they can order it in but I probably will miss out on cash back because I need code on the box . Why did they take it down from the website.. Shouldn't have hesitated yesterday!

    • +1

You may want to call a few jbhifi stores in your area. Good luck & happy hunting.

    • +2

Yeah what rusty2k said, you need to ring around there will be limited stock

      • I did. No stock in both stores.

        • Bugger :(

        • @TRENT86:

All I can do is order it in at $253.30 and wait for JB Hifi to receive it. Problem is that might take some time and I'd likely miss out on the cashback deal because I would need the barcode on the box :(

        • @djevoultion: It would suck but to be honest even without cashback it's a good deal, maybe see if anyone else around stocks it and try price match?

        • @TRENT86:

Won't be able to price match because its not listed on JB's website and they will call JB to confirm stock - none in Cairns

        • @djevoultion: Lol we can't win :(

  • No deal. For cameras, cheaper prices at: eglobaldigitalcameras
    for example, http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/cameras/digital-slr-…

    • +1

      Grey import pls.

    • +1

Yeah they aren't Australian stock are they?

  • Do you think this laptop would be able to play starcraft 2 on low settings with the integrated graphics :)

  • +1

Good work Trent! Best value laptop deal I've seen here since the Kogan $500 Macbook Air 11.

Guys, need some advice on SSD. Are the different brands/models much the same speed?

Only need 60GB. Thinking of just getting the cheapest from MSY, Patriot Blaze $45, and pairing with 4GB ram.

Laptop is for mum, she only uses Chrome and Word, but I want it to be quick!

    • +3

Are the different brands/models much the same speed? - YES.
it will be fast with the SSD and 4Gb.
you may want to think about a 128GB SSD around the $69 mark (check staticice)

correct me if I'm wrong here guys, the 60GB may not be enough breathing space, after you have installed a few apps, office, antivirus, windows updates, skype, facebook etc there may not be much remaining….

      • Only filled 23GB with all programs installed - removed all the bloat, but haven't completed Windows updates yet. Surely enough headroom for a 60GB SSD?

The laptop is for mum, her usage patterns have been static for years, she won't need additional space to grow into. Basically this will just be used for Chrome browser.

        • 8GB will make more sense, couse then you don't need swap file and onece it has been loaded it only hybernates usually, so not really need to load all stuff. Chrome can easily eat 4 gigs..

  • +2

Thanks op, just picked one up. Unreal deal.

Noticed when I went to fill out the acer cash back form that some muppet at JB has put a big black marker line down through the sticker with the SNID and barcodes. Anyone else have this on theirs, am wondering if acer will accept it like that.

    • Yep mine got marked out with black marker. It is still legible though if they look really close to it. Keeping fingers crossed.

      • yeah sames. Sending in on Monday will report back

    • How does it affect JB HiFi? The cashback is through Acer… They should NOT have touched the SNID's…

  • Anyone having issues with installing Norton onto this unit?

I have installed and uninstalled it as it keeps on saying I have a 30 day trial but I purchased the 5 device protection

    • +5

      Norton IS the issue.

      I recommend Avast Free 2015 :)

  • +1

Anyone else tried different browsers and noticed that IE is incredibly smooth whereas chrome and firefox tend to lag when scrolling? What's up with that

    • Firefox was very laggy for me, Chrome is much better. Didnt bother with IE.

      • Firefox and Chrome were both laggy for me. I can't believe I'm saying this but looks like IE will be my default browser for this laptop. Well IE isn't as bad as it used to be at least.

        • They are ok with logitech mouse, touchpad drivers are not the best, have same laggy touchpad on another acer. May worse to look around for better drivers..

  • Hi guys,

The trackpad refusing to work on mine after the million odd windows updates and MS Office updates, I thought it was sweet until this!

Anyone else suffered the same? Fix please?

Tried installing trackpad drivers to no avail.

    Thanks!
