Sorry to be a letdown, but thought you guys should know about the reviews written on HN for the laptop:

    ★ 1 out of 5 stars.

    Slow and not as advertised

I bought this machine from havery Norman thinking it will be a nice simple laptop for a budget price. The laptop was advertised with a processor speed somewhere around the 2 GHz mark. In fact it's only 1.8. The ram included is only 2 gig. But expandable. Upon having a look at the motherboard there is only 1 ram stick spot. So to upgrade I would have to throw away the included ram and spend more money on another stick. And to add insult to injury the laptop has now dropped in price just weeks after I bought it. Never again going to Harvey Norman.

    To slow

Poor finishing Running very slowly Not happy at all

    • +4

lol its 214 not around 400 what he paid for it so with 8 gig stick in it and a ssd still under what he paid and it will be decent speed for general use.

  • +1

when u go overseas you claim back the gst min $300 in goods. So i can get back about $30 at airport. Tourist refund scheme.

Just scored a Kingston 8gb 1600mhz DDR3L for $76 delivered. One more available if anyone is interested?

    • any cheap 4gb ones?

      • Not from this seller (it's just a guy on eBay who I made an offer to and was accepted a minute later) brand new.

        • care to link? btw is it certain that the 1600mhz works with this lappy? cheers.

        • @anthoneeyz:

          http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/331550633012?nav=SEARCH

He accepted $68 making final price $76.20. Maybe you could go lower but I thought that's getting into lowball territory ;)

As for whether 1600mhz works I will find out soon. I figure I can always get my money back (resell) if it doesn't.

        • +1

@Click_It: cheers mate, i went all out OBstyle and managed to get it for $75.20 posted lol

        • @anthoneeyz:

          Haha good work!

        • @Click_It:

Hey please tell us how it goes (that is if the 1600mhz ram works) thanks :)

        • @mattoo:

          Sure will!

        • @Click_It:as an Ozbargainer you must be burning

        • @Jackson:

          You lost me there?
Was that a reference to all my posting in this thread? Have been a little hyperactive here today…

        • @Click_It: no I could tell you were excited, I meant burning that the other guys saved another 2 bucks off the price you paid for the ram

        • +1

          @Jackson:

Ahh (I'm tired), yes I will admit a small part of me was bummed about that lol

    • make sure its low voltage ram

      • Yep all good.

        It's Kingston kvr16ls11/8
        http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1600MHz-PC3-12800-…

Rated high on Amazon. On staticice for 11c less if you can pickup, otherwise mine was easily the best price going and I should have it tomorrow.

        • Just to confirm - theres nothing wrong with using 1600mhz right? It will just run at 1333mhz and nothing will be damaged?

        • @mattoo:

Only experienced this on desktops where the PC recognises it at the lower supported speed, in this case 1333mhz, voltages all remain the same so it's not possible to hurt it.

Hopefully the same applies for this laptop. Laptops can be fussier with ram but I'm quietly confident.

        • @mattoo:

Not the same laptop (but similar) just read this from Amazon comments.

Dropped right into my assus x55a, My computer only supports 1333mz ram(something i didn't realize) so these run at that speed with no problems on my machine

        • Alrighty thanks - I guess I'll get 1600mhz so I can reuse it for other laptops if this one starts dying.

        • @mattoo: Correct

        • Noob question, is there any reason we can't buy that ram from Amazon rather than MSY? Like, is there US ram and AUS ram or is it all the same?

        • +1

          @Cam:

It's all the same just buy the cheapest.

DDR3L 1600 Kingston is good to go, other brands may or may not work. Thankfully Kingston tend to be among the cheapest anyway.

  • Just bought one - pickup this evening.

Ive got a spare SSD at home will order more ram.

Its to replace the girlfriend's ageing and heavy HP.

    Thanks Trent

  • any info on the battery life of this thing?

    • Someone commented on this in either the other jb or DSE deal. I can't remember or have time to find it right now but it was decent from memory

  • Thanks heaps. Just ordered one.

  • +22

thanks! ordered 6, to take to our charity village school in India.
We've just had power connected to the village (thanks Modi!) and now we can setup a computer class :D

Whoa! Not entirely sure if you are serious or joking but awesome either way :)

      • +18

        totally serious.

        been running 2-3yrs now.

My hat goes off to you sir, what a noble cause (and doing it the OzBargain way saved you a ton!)

I will check it out (I'm an IT Trainer, amongst other things myself so this sounds interesting)

        • +1

Hats off! As an Ozbargainer, just don't forget the TRS so you can save more for your project.

        • @Click_It: thanks! for the moment I've setup some raspberry PIs and another Pi running Rachel-Pi.

Internet access is still a while off at this stage but first the local kids & adults need to learn how to use a keyboard, how to hold a mouse etc.

Around 20 kids gathered around when the first light bulb was switched on at the school. They had never seen anything like it!

anyway I am derailing the topic at hand :p

        • @daft009:

Wow, it really does put things in perspective though. I wish I could donate solar panels, sounds like just the thing it needs.

I'm getting visions of kids running around with eneloop powered cree torches in the future (tongue-in-cheek) :)

    • Is there any limit of claims on cashback?

      • +1

        uh oh, hope not :)

        • I asked (coz I bought 2) and he said it should be fine, it goes off the serial number of each device so he said it shouldn't matter if you buy 1 or well, 6 :)

      • +3

I looked on the cashback site. Looks to be 5 claims per product? So 6th probably won't work, but 5th will.

If its going to be problematic, buy the 6th to 10th laptops under a different name.

        • Thanks for the heads up. Might see if I can get a different receipt for the 6th one when I goto pickup!

        • @daft009:Do this and get someone else in your family to process it

      • +1

yes its 5 per person per item

    • +3

Ordinarily I'd accuse you of Broden-ing, but I'll make an exception. Good work!!

  • Is there anyone able to price match at HN?
    Please share, cheers.

  • Just picked mine up. screen looks pretty good / mucho bloatware…thanks op.

    • +1

      how is the weight?

      • +1

1.83kg plus 290gms for the charger / lead

  • +5

Just got one so I don't have to keep bringing my personal laptop to work.

Will this run Age of Empires II? I'll keep ya posted.

    • +3

AoE 2 - probably one of the most fun games ever created!

      • +2

My all time favourite game, even in 2015. I have a family so I never get time to play it anymore but such fond memories.

To the original question, it'll run the game fine. Even without upgrading SSD/RAM, though SSD will make load times snappier.

        • +2

          Same here!

That awesome moment when you're waiting outside an enemy's gates and a villager happens to walk out, at which point you charge your whole army through the gates… Good times! Lol

          @montorola:

Haha I am grinning right now, 1 stupid little pleb can be the downfall of an entire civilisation :D

        • +1

@Click_It: Just a quick update: It runs Age of Empires II: HD & Command & Conquer: Red Alert wonderfully :D

        • @falzoni:

Awesome C&C Red Alert, another classic! :)

          Glad to hear it.

  • Can someone comment on the battery life? I'm interested in using this to take with me on airplanes and when travelling. How is the quality of the screen? Will be watching movies

    • +1

Can do 5 hours easily when connected to wifi, half web browsing half youtube

  • +3

Managed to price match at HN for $253.30 and get 4gb ram for exta $100. Total of $353.30, pay with Amex ($50 off). So should be $260 with cashback plus extra 4gb at HN. Save me 1.5 hour drive to travel to nearest jb hi fi. And keep the 1 year warranty because HN did the swap.

    • Thanks for sharing.

    • +1

You got rear ended on that RAM price, but well done with the price match and Amex deal.
I find Harvey Norman salespeople to be so painful and hassly with their crappy "upsell" tactics that I avoid the place unless I absolutely have to go there. So well done.

      • +1

Yeah true. Though I guess he's almost back to even after the AMEX deal.

    • HN offered to price match JBs price or offer 4GB RAM for $50 extra. But I decided better deals will come with the EOFYS.

      • which HN?

        • +2

          Nunawading

  • Any idea/suggestions on a cheap but well performing sad to go in this. Don't need much capacity since everything is on the nas or one drive…

    Cheers

  • Would Ubuntu / ElementaryOS work well on this?

    • Why not?

Just killed my old clevo notebook and unluckily my tablet died.

So I Picked one up just now, no dvd drive but looks like it can be added.
I have one laying around so will try and report back.

While I have it open, will do a repaste and maybe upload a vid of what the motherboard looks like inside.

Would also recommend a program called throttlestop, popular and free on notebook forums, it seems to be able to maintain the CPU at the boost frequency at 2.2ghz.

I'll be putting my SSD in and intend to have the optical drive bay swappable with the original HDD and my DVD drive.

Certainly needs a ram upgrade, 4gb stick should be enough for me. Probably pick one up on ebay.

Apart from that, really surprised with the overall look and feel. Keyboard seems fine to type on and screen is nice. Just colours seem off, could possibly need calibration.

Can't believe how cheap notebooks are getting.

    • +1

Please report back on the upgrades :D

      • So far only have placed abother hdd in the optical bay that was empty.
simple to remove with just 1 screw.

It's a slim bay so make sure you have a slim optical drive or hdd caddy.

As far as thermal paste goes, replaced it however it was not a bad application from factory. Wouldn't actually recommend repasting straight away.

One thing I noticed is if you do take the case apart to upgrade ram or the hdd, be mindful of how you put the bottom back on. Mind the audio jack.

        • When you say slim bay, do you mean a 9.5mm one, as opposed to the 12.7mm one?

        • Yes I chipped the audio jack a bit while putting the bad lid on , frustrating but thinking its a small chip and a $200 laptop its ok :)

        • @regenade:

If it makes you feel any better I cracked the audio jack on one of mine too. By the time I did the 2nd laptop I realised there is a technique to it (slide it in from the side first). As you say $214 who cares :)

    • Will throttlestop affect battery life and coolness though?

      • From my minimal testing, it's still running cool enough where I don even hear the fan.

Yes battery life would be affected, but there is an option in throttlestop to only be enabled while plugged in on AC power.

    • Also noticed my notebook came with a bios password, have no idea how it was possible given the thing was sealed.
Called acer and they confirmed they don't set a password.

Anyway when you enter a password wrong 3 times it produces a hash (8 digits) for you that you can use with this program called pwgen-insyde:
      http://dogber1.blogspot.com.au/2009/05/table-of-reverse-engi…

Just for anyone who sets a bios password and needs to reset it.

      • Does that work for anything or just certain brands?

  • Any ideas for a suitable 120gb SSD?

    • +3

      850 EVO 120gb here is $88 delivered: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/192935

      • +1

I forgot about that deal, thanks! Saved me ~$12.

I prefer this Samsung SSD over the slightly cheaper options. Samsung is just, better.

  • Is it easy to change to SSD drive and increase the memory ? Is there a website or you tube to show you how ? Also what software to clone the info from the Hard disk to SSD ? Will it void warranty when you do all this ?
    Thanks.

    • +1

Changing RAM is easy, kind of like a battery. It just pops out and you replace it with the new one.

I'm not so sure about HDD to SSD, I'm going to be trying that for the first time tonight with some help from my friend Google :)

      • Looks like 16 screws at the bottom, though someone below said 17 so I must have missed 1.

I haven't done it yet, don't have the RAM/SSD yet. SOmeone in previous thread said it's nice and easy. If you can use a phillips head screwdriver I don't envision any difficulties ;)

EDIT: sorry that was for hockey, close enough…

  • Just bought it. Need one for the kids since they need to do mathletics and studyladder all the time. Saves them using my desktop when I want to. Won't bother with ram and sdd for the kids however. $214 is a steal! Thanks OP.

  • +1

Ok just upgraded the ram to 4gb. Standard is 2gb kingston 1600mhz … only one rail. Bad news is 17 screws to remove. Good news is that everything is easy access once cover is off. Tip … when replacing the cover start at the headphone jack and angle it in.

    • The 2GB is 1600mhz? That's good news, now I have 100% confidence in my 1600Mhz 8GB stick purchased earlier today thanks :)

    • That's good news! I watched a video on upgrading an acer es1-511 (the 15in one) and it looked really complicated since the ram was on the other side of the motherboard so you had to unscrew the motherboard and flip it. I thought this 14in one would be the same but I guess it isn't :) thank goodness

  • +2

Not a bad deal for the D7200 (Cheapest Australian stock- StaticIce) which isn't mentioned in OPs post. By the way add some damn Nikon & JBHIFI Tags! took me 5 minutes to re-find the post :)

    D7200 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/nikon/nikon-d7200-24m…

Sorry m8, posted this and went straight to bed :) I have put the Nikon's in tags now and will add the 7200 to post. Cheers :)

      • +1

Love your work Trent. 2 new laptops here :)

  • D750 as well is a good deal - almost on par with grey import at DWI:

  • +2

Just had a play with this Acer Laptop at JB in Brighton, the error message on the screen complained of running out of memory. Not encouraging on a brand new machine. Or is this a warning that a load of bloatware needs to be deleted pronto?

  • +2

Goddamnit - took too long… it looks like it's been ozbargained..

    The ACER laptop that is.

  • Got one, thanks mate!

Can someone please explain how to upgrade from HDD to SSD? I want to remove all the bloatware. So I'm guessing I should somehow create a Win8 USB from the recovery partition, and then use the USB to install Win8 into the SSD?

    Thanks so much!
