Good and 3 months Netflix also

    • +1

If you have usa billing and usa dns can you use the 3 months netflix?

      • -2

youve gotta register a local netflix account, I reckon.

      • +3

Yes. It doesn't matter which country you've set up your netflix account with, you can still use the optus vouchers.

        • Awesome, thanks. Does it just add 3 months? (so billing stops for 3 months?) I am on the old $7.99 US plan.

        • +2

@daveaus: I believe it will credit you 3 months of whatever you are signed up to currently. E.g. $23.97 US in your instance. That is what happened for me

        • @barnetas:
Yep I have the middle tier plan and it gives me the equivalent in $ credits. Hrmm you could potentially get a bit more by temporarily upgrading to the top tier, applying all your Netflix coupons and then downgrading…

        • But thats netflix au right? You can't use the optus vouchers to get the netflix us unless I'm mistaken

        • +1

          @outlander:

          You are mistaken. ;)
I have a US netflix account.

        • Sweet, it seemed to give me $27 credit. I assume thats in USD.

        • @daveaus:
          Correct.

        • @starionx: $27USD = $34.44USD, woolworths has a $14.50 prepaid Samsung which comes with the free netflix. I wonder if netflix has a limit as to how much you can go into credit.

        • +1

          @daveaus:
It's not actually a $ amount that you get, but 3 months of the 2nd Tier (HD, 2 screens). So you get credited 3 months of whatever currency the region your account is in.
I doubt that there is a limit. I've got US$100 credit on my account. :)
Yep. The $14.50 phones are a no brainer (I bought 4 from Coles, on a previous deal), and I've bought another one from woolies yesterday. Works out to be less than $5 a month for netflix, and you get a free phone as well. ;)

        • @starionx: I did 3 no problems. The next 3 sim cards activated but no netflix code yet, I hope optus doesn't have a limit.

        • @daveaus:
Sometimes it takes a number of days to get the codes. If you don't get it after a few more days, call their helpdesk.

    • Can I buy this phone online or must I go to the store? Anyone know if its available in Glen Waverley or Nunawading area!! And where is the netflix deal? I dont see any deal regarding netflix!!

    http://www.code-unlocking.com/index.php

These guys unlock for about $6

    • Verified working?

    • +4

They can't unlock it, and they will hope you don't ask for a refund

    • Looks sketchy. I'm pretty sure they're not 'PayPal verified'.

      • +1

Paypal verified means they've added and confirmed their bank account with Paypal.

If they want to access all the money then they surely would have done this as otherwise the account will be subject to a monthly send/withdrawal limit of $500 USD.

Basically being verified just means that they get to cash out your money after you pay them :P

  • Great phone for $100, amazing phone for $29. The screen is horrid though - you've been warned :)

    • +6

How is it "great for $100" with a horrid screen? You can get android phones with nice IPS screen and 4G for under $100.

      • can u give me the link please

      • I am yet to use a sub$100 android that is as smooth/user friendly as the 530.

        • +1

Y550, g526, there are many more

        • @Jackson:
Those are the ones I know from here, which is enough. Are there really many more?

        • @Jackson:
Got one of each.. brilliant phones, and not windows phone (pain) either :-)

        • @manic: Off hand there are a couple of alcatel models and some China phones

        • @xywolap: FWIW I like the windows OS, it just the lack of apps that sucks, and that some of the apps that are there are missing features standard on android

There are some issues also that I hope they resolved by now, eg lack of BT keyboard support

        • @Jackson:

eg lack of BT keyboard support

Be patient. It took Apple years to fix that and other important features on the iPhone. (didn't even do cut& paste)

        • @manic: Was that you the other day? I usually don't recognise too many names here I just respond to anyone (apart from the select few eg JV)

  • would this one be better or the 532 at woolworths?

    • +5

      532

    • +2

depends who you prefer to be locked to telstra or optus

    • +1

they're $77 unlocked at officeworks. still cheaper to buy this then unlock

    • +2

edit - does no one under stand irony?

      edit edit - or rhetoric?

  • +2

    When does this deal start?
Pretty tempting for a backup phone (as if i need anymore though lol)

  • +9

To give general feedback about the phone since there have been a lot of 530 deals up to this point:

    • Really fracking cheap. Obviously.
    • Runs WinPhone decently, no obvious slowdowns in standard usage.
    • Now has access to Cortana and other stuff from the Lumia Denim update.
    • SD card slot, replaceable covers / battery and shit.

    • The screen is terrible. Compared to the 520 that this supplants, it's "mostly comparable" on every other spec, but the colours / viewing angles for the screen dropped off a cliff.

    • No hardware buttons on the face. This may not be a serious negative for a lot of people but I greatly prefer phones with buttons not part of the screen.
    • WinPhone ecosystem is pretty crappy. Not many apps. This is not unique to this phone. Not a concern for me, might be a concern for other people.
    • Meh battery life.

If you can get a 520, they're better IMO. But the 530 is still a fine backup phone, cheap MP3 player, or just a cheap phone in general if your use case is pretty simple.

    • +1

Might want to note, if using as backup u might need to chop/adapter for your current sim.

Lumia 530 uses Micro-SIM which has the shape of the normal sim but smaller. (as opposed to the even smaller nano-sim)

Though after the billion Lumia 530 deals recently… im sure you guys all know the innards by now

      • +2

Not sure how long they've been doing it, but my year-old Optus sim is a pre-cut micro-sim in a mini-sim card, so you simply need to push out the micro-sim.

    • Mine's battery life was worse than "Meh", even with battery saver turned on and on standby mode it drains like waterfall, after a few hours the battery is depleted. Maybe mine is a faulty one, but after that experience I don't think it's decent enough, after all a phone at least has to have decent battery life to serve as backup.

      • +1

My 520 can last a week on standby, no battery saver mode enabled. I see no reason for the 530 to be different, unless you're actively using it. So, yea, probably defective - especially if it's only getting a few hours on standby. Though, if you have shitty reception that could also increase battery usage.

        • Thanks for bringing up the 520, my brother has one as well and the battery has no problem, I actually forgot that I can try swapping the battery with his to see maybe find out what the culprit is.

    • hmm as mentioned over here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198421, the 520 (locked to Telstra) is going for $44.50 at Target

  • Same price at kmart.

  • Would this be good for a dedicated GPS in car, obviously no Sim.

    • +1

I use Here Drive on this for GPS purpose. Though it has offline map, it still seem requires network from time to time.

      • We use Here maps on all out phones… (android).. it never needs network.

        • I have here maps on my note 2 and works wonders especially offline but I would prefer a more dedicated gps rather then my phone but for a decent one you have to spend big with limited updates.
So if I get this download the maps to offline and go for on there but another question is how quick would it get a lock without network.

    • +2

As long as you don't update the to the Denim update. Worked purely offline before, but now it terrible.

      • Can anyone else confirm the Denim update bjorks the GPS of the 530?

        • +11

          bjorks the GPS

          Starts showing Icelandic maps? :)

        • +1

@greenpossum: punches out journos at the airport

      • +1

I used here drive in west Europe for 4 weeks, never required network during navigation.
ATM, I believe here drive is best solution to drive overseas.

        • I fit 10 countries map in nokia 635, without m-sd card.

        • Is here drive still only available for Nokia and not other windows phones?

        • @Jackson:
          I don't know

  • +1

OP, when does the deal start? Checked DSE website and it's listed as $59
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/prepaid-mobile-phones/optus-noki…

  • Has anyone tried Google maps on it? is it any good with the supposedly "not that good" screen?

    • +2

You'll likely use Here Drive on it instead. It works fine - not as clear as the 520 or the 730, but clear enough to drive with.

    • +3

you will need an sd card for maps to work

  • +4

Will be using as a cheap GPS when on holidays. HERE maps is actually brilliant for offline maps however you will need a microSD to actually save the maps direct to the phone as there insufficient internal memory

  • Now just to find a good OzBargain app for Windows Phone!

    • +1

Nextgen reader to read the ozb RSS feeds works well.

  • +3

Its getting to the point where you buy this phone just to save on the Netflix and have a drawer full of spare 'burner' / GPS & Music Player phones on tap for emergencies. LOL.

    • +2

I almost wish I was a criminal, so I could use all these burners =P

  • Any idea when the sale starts and ends?. Must be some where listed in the catalogue.

    • edit: nevermind got my info wrong.

  • Catalogue details got some thing wrong says the Lumia 530 has a 1.2ghz dual core processor. Doesn't the Lumia 530 have a quad core processor?.

  • Can someone pls answer me this question:
Is the app store on a Windows phone and Windows 8 app store the same? In other words, can I purchase Win8 desktop apps from a Windows phone with Telstra credit?

    • +3

Yes, whenever I buy something in my Lumia it immediately update it as "owned" in my Windows 8. However, I have found there are apps in the Windows 8 Appstore that are not available/visible in my Lumia.

    • +3

Win8 and WP8 Stores are separate and it is a common complaint amongst WP8, Win8 Tablet & Win8 PC users that they have to pay twice for the same app. Microsoft later gave software developers the ability to link purchase info between the two stores with "Universal Apps", but it is entirely optional. Microsoft will integrate the two stores with Windows 10 for universal apps. I don't know what will happen with non-universal apps.

Win8 Desktop apps are the same traditional software that you can install on XP, Vista, and Win7. They are not available in the Win8 and WP8 Stores, and you cannot buy them with Telstra credit. Win8 Store sells Win8 Modern apps. See here for more info about Desktop and Modern apps.

Win8 Store accepts PayPal and credit cards but it does not accept Carrier credit. (See here for WP8 Store payment options.) If the developer of an app has enabled store linking, then you can purchase a WP8 app and "own" the equivalent Win8 Modern app as a bonus. If the developer has not enabled store linking, then you will have to pay twice, once with Telstra credit on WP8 Store and again with real money on Win8 Store.

      • Cheers for the explanation.

      • Cheers! I guess I will wait for a cheap Win10 phone then before I start trying to accumulate free apps!

  • +1

Good phone for people who can't afford iPhone or galaxy.

  • Is this deal on now? Or will it start in a few days time???

  • +1

Oh wow my local Dick smith has closed down. When did that happen.

    So long DSE Claremont.

  • Anyone know if the free unlock from optus website still working?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194798

    • Doesn't work for me….

    • Didn't work for me even 8 days after Optus sim activation. I gave up with it.

    • As I made comment from the other thread.
      I brought one from Kmart.
I had a Woolworths mobile sim moved to optus. credit expired about a month ago
I rang Optus and I said I was going overseas and i want to use in New Zealand
and the site does say it is unlocked and it was not.
He ask for my account details and phone EMEI and he gave me the code 3 minutes later
      and it was unlocked.
So if you have a friend on optus prepaid they should be able to unlock it. Optus did
not ask where I brought it. Since it old stock they assume I have had it for a while.

  • Does anyone know when this deal starts?

    • 21st, it says it in the post.

      • +2

It says in the post '21 June - 6 days left' which to me implies it finishes on the 21st.
No mention of when it begins - as noted above, online price is still high so assuming it hasn't started yet.
So no, we don't know when this deal starts…

        • Ah yes you're right.

        • 6 days until 21 June would make it starting on Tuesday?.

  • not bad remidner for later

  • Dicksmiths Adelaide CBD haven't started with this deal. They have it in store for $59.

    • Try Kmart, they have the same price instore.

    • Which makes me think the sale might start tomorrow.

  • I might get this for my nephew for his birthday. Anybody have success getting this unlocked?

  • Thnx

  • +1

Works well for $29 as a cheap MP3 player.
