Why did you expire this exact deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208971?

    • Hey TA - that offer expired 5PM on Friday.

Happy to unexpire the old offer if that's the done thing.

  • No 5% cashback?

    • -3

Hello hotmustardsauce - no 5% cash back, just cold hard cash.

      • +5

Hi Scott. The 5% deal is far better because on average a customer will get 7 times $50 back over 6 months. I'd wager $50 of my money to say potential customers are waiting for the 5% deal to come back.

        • +1

Hello bargainslut - there was a bit of debate in the other thread about this. (I stay out of it), but some people like a bonus, some people like regular cash back (especially if you've modified your spending habits to keep everything under $100).

And some people like the idea of being able to use any ATM - have I mentioned it's worth looking verrrry closely at our offer if that's your kinda thing? ;)

I've had one of our lawyers come and cut and paste this text into my reply from the offer above:

^Receive free access to ME ATMs and our preferred ATM network of Westpac, St.George, BankSA and Bank of Melbourne ATMs. Open your ME EveryDay Transaction Account from 31 July 2015 and receive a refund on fees incurred at all other ATMs in Australia within 30 days of the transaction. We may change or withdraw this offer at any time.

        • +1

@MEBankScott: Thanks for the reply. I'll wait for the next 5% deal though. The inside scoop says it will happen before Christmas:)

        • +1

@bargainslut: If someone opens a market here on a pre Christmas 5% promotion, I'll need to recuse myself on account of this info!

        • @MEBankScott: Well be prepared to be rescued Scott, hehe.

        • @MEBankScott: What is stopping people from just getting the $50 and going back to ING? ING offers 2% back, rebates ALL ATM fees on any ATM in Australia, and has a better interest rate with linked savings account… Hmm…

        • @brezzo: Thanks for bringing up linked savings accounts brezzo - we've got a good linked online savings account here: https://www.mebank.com.au/lps/osa/me-bank-online-savings-acc…

        • You know, this is probably why they got rid of it. They are a bank and a bank is out there to make money as their primary objective, with customer satisfaction being secondary (as is the case with all businesses?).

So if they realised that they were making less money by giving out 5% cashback compared to this $50 one-off promo, then they've made a conscious business decision to do this and they're not about to change it back to 5% just because you and I want it.

        • +2

@MEBankScott: Don't you know that ING savings maximiser customers who also have an Orange Everyday bank account and deposit their pay of $1,000+ each month will get 3.5% vs MEBank 3.2% and they also receive 2% rebates on paypass.

        • +2

@gm3stevens: and free withdrawals at all ATMs :D

        • @bluedufflecoat: You are so right! Then, should I go for ING or ME Bank?

        • +1

@gm3stevens: wait for 5% cash back … if it happens… and when they do, sign up with ME Bank. In the meantime, no harm going with ING… that's my ahem "professional" opinion. ;)

        • @bargainslut:

Once you have had any account with ME you are no longer eligible for any promo…5% cashback promo etc. Don't waste your time with an application if you have EVER had an account before. I was told this direct over the phone from the ME rep.

        • @gm3stevens: May as well try your luck with Me Bank, it's a free $50 if it works (it should as long as you follow the criteria strictly). Other than that, there's not much point keeping the account open as ING surpasses every other account currently offered by any bank.

  • still waiting for the $50 from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204762

Leif I'm not sure if you've been in touch but if you haven't hit us up at [email protected] and we'll see what we can do assuming you qualified.

      • yep, sent an email there already. No response.

        • Thanks Leif we got your email on Saturday, we'll be in touch.

  • +3

ME Bank knows it's conditions are too demanding for many or most new customers to fulfill. They aren't paying nearly as many $50 out as they should be. They should remove the requirement for three $10 transactions (more than half the cash value - and they must be made before the $50 enters your account) like ING Direct and stop wasting people's time with these specials that sound a lot better than they are. Existing customers also get nothing - I've been a loyal customer for over ten years. I've since switched to ING.

TL;DR: Don't bother with this, you likely won't get your bonus money because the rules are too complicated.

    • Hey Meconium - thanks for your feedback. We reckon three $10 transactions is a pretty reasonable threshold to meet to qualify for the cash. And you don't have to just blow the $30 to qualify, you could buy lunch a few times in a week (or, maybe, shout me some beers?)

Re offers for new customers, we focus on providing great customer service and good value products for our existing customers. But most organisations will offer a promo to entice new customers - like ING might have done to win you over?

      • +8

I got six months of 5% cashback on paywave purchases with ING, which has since reverted to 2%. I referred family and friends to ING and got the referral offers (money and later gift vouchers) quickly and painlessly. And ING offers a better savings rate.

I'd be all for supporting an Australian bank instead, but I feel that promotions like these are needlessly complicated and are intended to get people's hopes up, only to find that the person they referred didn't make the appropriate purchases in time. The requirement is unnecessary and you'd have more loyal customers if you didn't make them jump through hoops. I wanted to make this clear to fellow ozbargainers. All the best with your promotion.

      • +1

I must have missed the 3 X $10 transactions for the last offer… ME explained to me after I'd already set everything up including them sending a card out to me.

Was all set to have my pay go into this account, but the 3 x $10 thing put me off from doing anything. Sadface

      • I must admit, I didn't even read the 5% cashback offer correctly in last month's post, so I didn't assume I'd be receiving it, so I signed up just for the $50, which I thought was a good enough payout for the 3 x $10 transactions worth of work. But then again, I'm not a heavy bargainer, so maybe the frustration of not getting enough freebies hasn't hit me yet, lol.

Having said all that, I just reread last month's post and have confirmed that I should have received the 5% cashback on my transactions, and they didn't come through! I've just chased them up online. :S

    • +1

They aren't offering this to give out free cash to everybody - They're hoping people will sign up for an account and use it as their actual account.
In that instance, you're very likely to make 3x $10 transactions in a month and you'd qualify.

OzBargain needs to remember that the average OzBargainer is not representative of the average consumer sometimes…

      • +1

You're right, they're clearly not giving out free cash to everybody. They only give you one day to sign up (6pm cutoff!), and require you to make those $10+ transactions in the first month in the hope that you'll eventually get a $50 rebate… and they may change or withdraw this offer at any time. I can't see the reason for all the onerous requirements apart from offering money and then withholding it due to a loophole. Waste of time.

      • You're onto something here padfoot87.

        • Who would have thought!

I also just realised I had an older username on here. I have changed now, so it looks like you're confused as to who you were replying to! :P

@Meconium - You seem offended that they aren't giving you $50 for free for absolutely no benefit to them.
I'm not an ME Bank customer, never have been, and I am not looking to change now… So I'll let this deal go by without a second thought. Its not for me at this stage.
If I'm looking for a free $50 for absolutely nothing? This is also not the offer for me.

        • +2

@itsMartin: Martin! Is that you Martin?

    • +2

I did one of the older promos where it was like a refer-a-friend with ME bank, never saw the bonus money because it took them WAY too long to mail the card to my friend, he couldn't get the transactions done in time.

I think he called them and insisted we are qualified for the promo (and they even agreed…) but I never saw a cent for my referral efforts. Waste of time.

  • Rep, If I can't verify ID online today and need to go to the P.O. will I still qualify for offer?
    Ta

hey bargainhunter - should be fine.

  • Hi OP

can children under 18 without a TFN open one of these ? TFN would be provided in a month.

    • Getting an answer for you now on the vjknight

    • hey vjknight, from the FAQs (which I've just helpfully been sent):

Am I eligible to open an EveryDay Transaction Account?
You're eligible to open an EveryDay Transaction Account if you are at least 16 years old and either:
      • an Australian citizen,
      • an Australian permanent resident or
      • an Australian resident for taxation purposes, and
      • have an Australian residential address.
Note, the account holder should complete the application.

Applicant has to be 16. Are you endeavouring to use the TFN for ID purposes?

I notice a lot of people complain about ME bank - personally I had no issues. I have received my $50 bonus within a reasonable period (deposited $50 made 3x $11 giftcard purchases within the first month). So either I am very lucky or others are not.

    • -1

Hey Mr Rort, thanks for that - what did you do with three $11 giftcards?

      • -1

I find this as a very strange question coming from the bank

        • -1

Hey IMBI3 - I reckon maybe Mr Rort had three Kris Kringles to contribute to that all coincidentally had an $11 limit. What do you reckon?

  • +1

The 5% cashback is way better than nothing!

  • +1

Waiting for the 5% cashback offer to come back…

    • I think #comeback5percentcashback might be trending again soon.

  • Is the 50bucks tax free? or you withhold a certain part of it which will not make it 50 bucks.

    • Hey Angeelkulit025 - I'm not able to provide advice on taxation (or fashion!) unfortunately, but, in my experience we pay the bonus as advertised (ie, $50).

    • I think these bonuses are meant to be declared as income

  • +1

I had mebank account before but called in to cancel my account few months ago.
    Is this valid to me?

    • Also would like to know.
Much prefer 5% cashback over $50 signup bonus!

      • hongd, cwongtech - I have bad news. Has to have been your first ever, my apologies.

Still, why not open another anyway? Come onnnn….

  • I got ME 50 bucks last week. ME reckons this bank ain't half bad, I reckon ME bank will remain ME bank for awhile.

Sorry I just had too. :-)

    • +2

AusBargainer that was horrible but I enjoyed sending it to our brand people. Thanks for the kind words

      • It was terrible, but I bet you smiled :-)

  • I have applied for an account before, but recently my partner and I are thinking of opening a joint account. If we do open a joint account, are we going to get $50? (We have only opened individual accounts before)

    • hey clse945111 - unfortunately you're ineligible, sorry!

  • +1

I encouraged my partner to open an account as a result of this deal
There is no code word present & none was seen during the resulting confirmation and signup.
They were subsequently denied the $50 because they did not qualify because no code was entered. Not happy.

  • I have a question for Scott ME bank. I rang ME to ask whether deposits or withdrawals at the post office incur a fee.
I was told no but I just want to check if that's correct.
The deal I got from ME was the $50 for opening an account and 5% cashback for 6 months from opening date which was 28th July 2015. I can only use certain ATM's or incur a fee. I'm concerned about having correct information regarding using post office to bank and if it will incur fees from ME or post office. Is there also any chance I can get the refund on any ATM fees also? It's quite awkward for me to find the bank ATM's that are free as they are not that close to me. Thankyou

    • Hey Luckymoo - depositing money at an AusPost is free, you can't withdraw though (I'm fairly certain, I'll double check) there's more info here: http://www.mebank.com.au/personal/bank-accounts/bank-with-me…

Re your account (it seems you have 5% cashback - AND the $50 - which will make a few people here jealous), and are a current account holder, which means you're ineligible for this offer. Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, St.George and BankSA ATMs should be free for you to use, but you can always give us a call to talk through the details of your account.

  • Fail bank. Constant crashes, constant issues - accounts vanishing then wobbling back. Equivalent to Ubank which is just as poor. Whirlpool it, there are threads there or look at the facebook page on and off.

  • done! looking forward to monies :)

  • -1

Doh, literally just signed up a couple of days ago - any way I can get this rep??

  • That didn't last long?

    • +4

      that's what she….

      :(

  • Thanks Scott. Just checked the link and it doesn't mention whether Aus Post withdrawal can be done without a fee. I will assume there is one.
