Google Chromecast - $38 @ Harvey Norman ($36.10 Price Matched @ Officeworks)

600

Harvey Norman has done it again!
$38 on their website, and Officeworks should beat it by 5% as part of their Lowest Price Guarantee.
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/google-chro…
Still not $24.50, but we might be waiting a looong time for that to come back.

Edit: not to be outdone, Officeworks have dropped their price to $38. Someone in the comments somewhere mentioned something about a Chromecast 2 coming soon?

      Yep.

Even if this were $24.50 I wouldn't touch it at the moment. We don't know the precise capability of the Chromecast 2, nor the price, nor the availability in Oz - but it's likely to reshape this market, and if nothing else push down prices on the ver 1 in response.

      Wait.

      • I agree, usually it is good to wait, but remember Apple TV (2 I think?). Everyone wanted that because you could jailbreak it and increase functionality. Please were selling those for up to $300 not that long ago. I don't think that is likely to happen here, but it is interesting to watch.

        • Chromecast hasn't been 'vulnerable' for a long time though. It gets pretty frequent updates behind the scenes. I doubt these units will be sought after at all once the new units are out. The new units (rumoured to be two models) will in all likelihood be better in pretty much every respect (connectivity, codecs etc).

I hope it is dual band, and doesn't do 4K. I don't want to spend money on 4K TV :(

        • According to the rumours your wishes may be answered - no talk of 4K.

I think they really need H.265 for 4K to be viable over even dual band wifi - which means maybe they are looking to a 'Pro' version before it gets that.

Don't forget, the new Chromecast is expected to be announced on the 29th of September along with a host of other Google goodies…

  • +4

Chromecast 2 will be released shortly so we should see lower prices on the 1st generation devices over the coming weeks.

In case you haven't heard by now, Chromecast 2 is coming :-P

  • Does this one allow you to run Kodi?

    • Yes, apparently it does.
      https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/stream-video-from-kodi-xb…

By the way, Chromecast 2 is coming :-D

    • Just to clarify - these cannot RUN Kodi, no. They can play back media from a Kodi instance if you have one elsewhere. However this is only with intermediary tools - you can't just use a Kodi app such as Yatse and cast to your TV directly. Those same intermediary tools could be used to play the same media on your Chromecast without Kodi in place, too.

    • I run kodi from a tablet which sends it to the chromecast. It works ok but the Chromecast is limited with the file formats it can play. Mostly the codecs within them. Sometimes you can be sitting there for 20 mins trying 50 different streams to play in the hope one will work. When it works it's good.

I just got myself an android media streaming box. Cost me $50 of ebay. Plays everything on kodi. Loving it

  • Sweet that's all I need it for

  • When Chromecast coming again?

Sorry had to do it lol

    • not sure, but i hear its coming soon….

  • Officeworks also don't seem to sell Chromecast anymore…

    • Officeworks Wollongong is still selling them. I was pondering it this morning, as I need (okay, want) some kind of media solution.

    BRACE YOURSELVES

    CHROMECAST 2 IS COMING

  • nice, but waiting for the $24 deal they had previously

  • -2

ive seen the chromecast 2 for sale for $37

    • where? is it even coming out? …

    • A whole 2 hrs, 40 min, to get a bite. 😄

  • +1

At this price, it may not be really worthwhile depending on your needs. I purchased two for $49.50 last time. One for a samsung smart tv, the other for my mother (50s). After testing it, I felt this would be too complicated and time-consuming for her. I got her to return one of them (brand new) and got a full refund of $49.50 RRP.. Lol.

Also, depending on whether you use android/apple and computer system, it can make a difference. On my iPhone, chrome cast is slightly buggy. But it works perfectly on my cheapo $45 huawei.

    • I was never sure about it. It was equally amazing as it was lacking. At $49.50 for 2, I caved-in. For that price, and using purely for Netflix, it's awesome. I still can't see any other usage in my house.

    I hear Chromecast 2 is coming…

Can Foxtel Go run on these?

    • +3

No it doesn't. On the Foxtel support forums, Foxtel claims they can't allow it due to content rights issues, which in reality is utter nonsense.

      • +1

Rights to charge full Foxtel prices.

        • Yep exactly. They'd rather sell you a second set top box at exorbitant prices…

        • Rights to charge full Foxtel prices

I already pay full Foxtel prices.

They let me run Foxtel Go on a PC with a 32" monitor, but not a 32" TV with a Chromecast ??? Go figure…

        • @jv: Hah yep. Got to love that greedy mentality of theirs…

  • Does this support VP9?

    • Only VP8 at the moment, the next one might well support VP9

Am waiting for Chromecast 3…apparently it comes with it's own portable flip-out 40 inch screen?

    • +5

      Hanging out for Chromecast 9.

      • +2

The jokes on you! I hear Chromecast 10 is going to be even better!

  • It's likely Officeworks will tell you it's a clearance price, which is on their list of price-match exemptions.

    • I don't even bother with the price match stuff once I find something reasonably priced :-)

  • If you are looking at getting one I would wait. There will be a new Chromecast coming out soon with dual 5ghz and 2.4ghz bands which will push the current price on this model down even further when they want to clear stock.

  • I think Chromecast 2 is coming.. so, wait for it!

  • +1

In case you haven't heard by now, Chromecast 2 is coming :-P

  • +2

And, BTW, did you know that Chromecast 2 is coming ;-)

  • +4

BTW Chromecast TWO is coming TOO

  • And pay at Officeworks with ME Bank Card to get another 5% cashback on it.

Which will bring the final cost to $34.30.

  • +3

If you dont have a chromecast by now, for under $30, you are doing it wrong.

Also, i think chromecast 2 will be underwhelming - it will have claims of faster streaming but the original model is perfectly capable.

  • +1
  • I think they'll just charge more like 70-80 for the new Chromecast

    • +2

      It will be $49.

      In Google I Trust.

  • Looking forward to Chromecast 2. Based on how OW managed the process here last time advising people who missed out that it would be back in stock (but not back at RRP which it eventually was), I would prefer to pay the difference at HN.

Any ideas of when the next Roku is out? … I still have a Boxee which is functional enough for me once hacked.

    • might be a while yet on the roku?

I see Telstra are introducing roku 3 to Oz (badged as a Telstra box) in the very near future.

  • +1

ChromeCast 3 will be coming soon. I saw it, in a dream

    • Was it a chromecast2 within a chromecast?

      • Chromeception

  • Chromecast dev on reddit regarding chromecast 2

Mostly because it will have the same features as the original and most users won’t notice a difference

Although presumably the price of chromecast (1) will drop once it's released.

    • +2

that was from 11 months ago though..

  • Hope chromecast 2 has dual wifi support and on 5GHz wireless N and AC. Plus with the same price tag as old. Oh, how about natively decodes MKV and H. 265, Haha wishful thinking

You can pre-order Chromecast 2!! - why bother with this? :D

  • Just wondering are there any apps that allow you to stream from SMB shares? I didn't enable UPNP on my NAS before I copied the media files over, and I don't want to try now, it would take ages.

    • Check out LocalCast or BubbleUPnP.

  • Got 1 for $38 from the Good Guys, price matched no question asked. As usual very good customer service from the good guys staff members.

  • Has anyone heard about a Chromecast 2? Is it coming soon?

    • Doubt it, I haven't heard much about it to be quite honest with you.

  • Hi Everyone, I am a bit of a noob at this, so would like some advice. Just recently got an NBN connection (after years of mobile broadband) and started using netflix.

What would be the best current device for me to buy, to stream to a TV.

Currently using a laptop via HDMI. Would like something neater and easier.

    Thanks in advance.

    • Assuming it's a smart TV, connect the TV to the internet and use the Netflix app.

For other media, really depends on what you want to stream and how often.

    • +1

Assuming you don't have a smart TV hence why you're using HDMI. a chromecast would be fantastic to buy to stream Netflix with your phone, so much easier. However like people said the pricing is an issue, either wait for the price to drop with the announcement of the new version or go with this deal (which is not worth it imo)

  • just bought from jbhifi for $49!!

    • +2

why would you ever buy a chromecast at it's full price?

      • …..,

    • +1

Paying full price AND not waiting until Chromecast 2 is out (apparently it's common knowledge)?!

You are forever exiled from the OzB community

      • Ah! I know!

My parents are visiting and I wanted them to watch netflix on big but old tv.

  • +4

$49!! Please turn in your Oz baragain card and hang your head in shame

    • +2

I bet he pays for Udemy courses too! Off with his head!

  • theres a new improved chromecast due shortly.. bad time to buy.

  • Chromecast II is coming…

  • Chromecast 2 might be coming but its not going to be released in Australia anytime soon

  • Is Chromecast 2 coming soon?

  • Chromecast 2 is coming - "Hell, its about time…"

Officeworks have now matched the price so the 5% off will no longer apply!

  • Would a Chromecast work plugged directly into the HDMI of a projector with a speaker?

    • +1

Yes, just need to provide sufficient power through USB.

      • -1

… or the provided AC adapter

        • -1

…which provides sufficient power through USB

  • Does not look like the new Chromecast will come out here for a while.
Did Australia have to wait long for the release of the first Chromecast?
