Free $10 Optus Sim Starter Pack (for ING / Coles MC Users - $1 Otherwise) @ Coles Express

1200

This deal is on again. Make any ATM transaction (balance enquiry or cash withdrawal) to receive your free $10 Optus Sim Starter Pack. Free for ING Direct or Coles MasterCard customers, otherwise it is $1 for a balance enquiry for other cards. A good idea to ensure the store has stock first (if you are paying the $1 ATM fee) as they have been indifferent in the past.

From Optus website: "This SIM is preloaded with a $10 recharge you can use on our My Prepaid Daily and Monthly plans, which include generous calls, text and data^." Plans here. I'm sure there are other inventive ways to use the credit with sim transfers etc.

Note that the Free Spring Water deal is still available if you'd prefer that. Replaced with Free Coke Life 390ml

Reminder: To receive free ATM fees you must deposit (but not keep) $1000 a month into your ING account:
"Every single ATM in Australia is FREE. Simply deposit $1,000 or more per month."

This thing is awesome. Thanks OP.
International call rates to many of the more "popular" countries are pretty cheap with the MyPrepaid Daily plans, so consider that!

edit: Btw I think you mean "balance check" - not "balance transfer"

    • Good idea and thanks fixed that up (too many credit card deals).

  • Anyone know if it's free for Qantas Cash Withdrawal??

lol good luck finding stock . They will either sell out and wont re order till promo finishes or hide them and say they have none

    Been there done that

Most stores did this will the $1 telstra promo coles had

you'll probably find yourself spending $10 petrol driving around trying to find stock

    • +1

No stock at strathfield 2134 Coles express

  • So to qualify for this I just need to use an ATM at Coles Express and claim it at the counter? Could someone please advise me? Thanks.

Another thing can you repeat this every single day?

    • +1

Yes the Coles Express ATM will give you a printed voucher which you take to the counter to swap for the $10 sim kit.

The printed voucher looks like this.

  • So can I go to another store and do the same thing?

    • Yes, or go back to the store the next day/later. It's 1 sim card per transaction. You can obtain a heap of vouchers at once though if you wanted to do say 5 balance enquirys in a row, you don't need to redeem them immediately.

      • -1

isnt the maximum 5 prepaid services you can have connected under a single name anyway?

        • IIRC the limit applies to the 'form' of verified personal ID provided to the carrier

  • Do they take personal details when you register the sim card / is there a limit to how many you can get?

    • Not sure about the details, they didn't last time and I doubt they will but you might get unlucky. 1 sim card per transaction/voucher - decipher that as you will.

    • It used to be the case that the retailer took the buyers details upon purchase but that no longer applies now and the telco does the confirmation.

So presumably the store doesn't record you & will not know how many.

    • For Optus to activate it, it requires you to put in your License or some form of identification when you register the sim card. That's what happened to me when I got mine.

  • Probably better off with the $5 $30 sims if you can get them at your Woolies.
These will go straight out of stock like last time. Blew more in fuel looking for them than worth it.

  • The Gungahlin servo didn't have any and had no idea about the promotion.

The Belconnen servo (near College St) had a few so I grabbed one. The packs only contained regular and micro SIM cards. Had to go into Optus to get a nano (cost $2).

    Overall, good deal.

    • I wonder if you need to pay $2 if you lose your SIM card…

      • Wouldn't surprise me!

      • +1

I thought replacement SIM cards were free…

        • Maybe getting one of the same kind? But I needed a Nano, so maybe that's why it cost me.

        • Seems to be the policy that changes according to who you get. Six months ago, I had my faulty SIM replaced FOC by the Optus shop (no evidence was required). Last week same thing again but the assistant insisted no $2, no SIM! (She was a Kiwi and it was the day of the rugby final, not sure if that made the difference LOL.

        • @scotchonrocks:

They probably knew they'd get thrashed in the first test.

    • Dude walk in and ask for a replacement and that $2 card is handed to you for free.

    • same here, went to my local servo both attendants didn't know what I am talking about. When I show them what is displayed on the ATM they still have no ideas.

  • You can also find it on the ad on the right side of their webpage

  • Can you convert the credit into Google Play dollars?

    • no, only telstra

    • +1

      Nope. Optus doesn't do that.

Good deal for all the drug dealers to stock up on

  • Even cheaper than getting a new $2 SIM card for $30 off an Uber ride. :D

  • Price is right, but AFAIK ootus have yet to implement method to do SIM/ac transfers. I could use my gvHangouts number but nah; got 72 G/$32x+ top-up T-plan to get on with oohyea.

      • Oh Kaptn, my Kaptn if you would unpack for me one reference from the op's post (before my inline correction):
"I'm sure there are other inventive ways to use the credit with sim transfers etc.

This I am pleased with for my transactions to a 72gb and 320.00+ pre-existing primary accounts top-ups using telstra vs my being lumped with largely inflexible credit anywhere else.

  • The sim pack I've got expires on 01 Oct 2015, is it still usable?

    • No not usable.
Also good point to watch. Optus SIMs can be quite short dated. They seem to be in circulation always less than 12months when new so its easy for them to sit on a shelf and be expired or close to it.

      • damn, such a scam… (I got nothing to proof I got this from coles express too…)

    • Mine has the same expiry date, no problems activating it, and checked balance via sms method, credit available was $10 with an expiry of 10/05/2016 !! So give it a try

      • thanks, will give it a try.

      • Wow Optus rep lied to me then. I bought phone earlier in the year that came with an already past date SIM and Optus told me no way.
Anyway - well done. Am surprised you can activate a month after expiry though.

    • Mine had that date on it too. No issues with activation (went into an Optus store to do that).

    • I went to 4 stores and all I got were expired SIMs, I activated one so far, not sure how long the others will last. I was hoping to do a cheap Telstra Starter Kit port in/out but I don't think it will last that long. Maybe I'll just activate all of them now and use Dual SIM for a while

      • +2

That explains why they are free!

        • couldn't argue with the price

    • I got one with same expiry date. The attendant told me it's still redeemable and that's the reason why they're free. I'll activate tonight and report back.

  • Awesome chance to accumulate all those $30 free rides with Uber

    • You'd still need different credit cards with different names for Uber, and if they smell something fishy (eg. you are using the same mobile phone, such as the MAC address of your phone) they can cancel the free ride as stated in their T&Cs — sometimes even when you are on your first ride, which means you will be paying full price.

  • As others have mentioned only expired (Oct 2015) SIMs in my area.
Anyone get an in date SIM?

  • +1

The only safe pack to collect are non dated ones ie Vodafone, and, to a lesser extent, telstra. Then there's the rest that are close to rubbish.

  • -1

No stock in Brisbane - Garden City & Mt Gravatt (Logan Rd).

Last deal I only tried in last week & picked up 3 at 3 Coles Express, expiring 1/10/15 & 1/1/16.

After that deal, never saw any $10 packs again at Coles Express.

    • Also no stock at Cannon Hill or Bulimba. Cannon Hill was recently reopened after renovations, so would expect had been restocked.

Staff said it is up to Optus rep to keep stocks up. Promo would've been negotiated with Optus.

  • Grrr … none on the shelf and operator reckons he'd never seen them stock a $10 Optus pre-paid Sim pack! >.<

  • I've been able to find no Coles express with $10 SIM Cards on the shelf.

All stores checked the operator didn't know of the $10 cards… checked about 4 on the way home… :/

Why have a promotion if you have 0 stock to give out … lame

  • Went to 4 servos today. Two of them the machines could not print out tickets and had no stocks anyway. The other two I could print the voucher but still no stock and operators had no idea about the promotion. Servos were Runaway Bay, Upper Coomera, Napper Rd & Ferry rd Southport all in Qld.

  • Stopped at the servo today, they had heaps of the $2 and the $30 starter kits, but no $10 ones.

  • Like the Woolies $5 promotion which sold out quickly and no replacement packets were ordered, it's probably more of a ploy by cheapskate Optus to clear out old SIMs rather that gain customers.

  • Got one at horseley drive Wetherill Park near Greenway plaza, there were 3 or 4 left, all with the same expired date, hope i can activate it tomorrow like some people had reported

  • On the bright side, for those who miss out, you have missed maybe 1/3, of 1 month, worth of optus-net.

  • Found $10 packs but they were expired.

    • +1

I've just activated a supposedly expired pack dated 1/10/2015 successfully today, but there's no telling how long optus would extend this

      • Thanks, but not gonna risk it.

        • +1

What's the risk on a free product (assuming you're using the right card in the ATM).

  • Been to 2 service station both out of date

I would like to vote positive on this deal, but I just can't. Let me explain why. The deal itself is great. And I thank the OP for posting it. But the problem is Coles Express, in particular their attitude. Here's what happened to me, at Coles Express Ultimo in Sydney:

Day 1: Wife goes in and does 4 balance enquiries, gets 4 vouchers. Tries to redeem one. The staff say "Oh you have to buy one $10 SIM and then you get one free. See, it says 'bonus', not 'free'." They refuse to budge, but eventually say "If you want, you can come see the manager tomorrow." She eventually gives up, and no SIM pack.

Day 2: I go in the next day, and buy a coffee and ask for a SIM pack with the voucher. They try the same spiel on me - it's a bonus only if you buy one. I say that's not correct. She says, I'll show you, and scans a $10 SIM, then scans the $10 SIM again, and it says $20, then she scans the voucher and it says $10 total. "Look, it's only a bonus". I say "no problem, now just remove one SIM pack from the order please". She looks puzzled and tries to argue, but then does it. New total = $0. She says nothing, gives me the SIM pack [expiry date = May 2016] and the change from my coffee. As a walk away I can see her huddled with 2 other colleagues behind the counter, carefully examining the voucher and talking about it, trying to understand what just happened. I turn back and explain that "it is correct, it's an Optus promotion, they want more people on their network because they are losing their TPG customers to Vodafone soon, so this promo is to try to recover market share at the low end". They look at me, but say nothing to me, then talk to each other so softly that I am unable to hear what they are saying. I leave with the distinct feeling that they are about to Broden the remaining SIM packs or hide them or do something else mischievous.

Day 3: I go in again, buy my 80 cent coffee, and give the voucher to the guy. He scans it, looks confused, I say you have scan the $10 SIM pack too, then the same lady as the previous day see what's happening, leaps across from her counter, pushes herself right in front of the guy, and quickly blurts out "Oh we're all sold out of those $10 packs. You can keep the voucher. Maybe another store has stock? Why don't you go try somewhere else? Sold out here." From her tone and body language and behaviour I have the exceedingly strong suspicion that she is lying, but I have no way to prove it, since the SIM packs are kept behind the counter.

Day 4: I do my grocery shopping but decide to buy my $2 milk at Coles Express on the way home, since it's the same price as the supermarket and I drive past it anyway, and decide to give redeeming the SIM pack one last go. It's a new guy, plus there's a different lady that I don't see until she speaks who is crouched on the floor behind the counter restocking something. I ask if there have any $10 Optus SIM packs, and do not mention the voucher. The guy starts to walk towards where they are kept and the lady blurts out "Sold out!", the guy starts to says something and starts to raise his finger to point at where the SIM packs are (from his tone and body language I suspect he was about to say something like "actually, I think there might still be some there"), but looks at the lady and then quickly stops himself.

So at this point, it's clear that either:
    a) they have no stock.
    b) they have stock but are hiding it until this promo is over.

Based on my experiences, I strongly suspect that it's the latter, but cannot prove it.

Either way, the attitude of Coles Express staff towards their customers seems exceedingly poor, when all I was trying to was redeem a Coles Express voucher from a Coles Express ATM at a Coles Express whilst I was also buying other items from that Coles Express.

    • +1

Not good to hear. The last time this promo was run there were a lot of issues with stores trying to argue it is buy 1 get 1 free and not get 1 free, assume it was a misunderstanding due to the wording of the voucher but Coles Express didn't do much about it, I guess it's low priority for them.

I haven't had any issues this time around in SA but last time I had stock issues and the misunderstanding of the vouchers issue when stock was found. Not sure why stores would purposely hide stock, especially since these sim cards are expired. I would be sending Coles Express an email, the last time I did that about an unrelated matter I got a pretty good response from head office and then had the manager of the store call me to discuss and rectify the issue - not sure how receptive they'll be about freebies and whilst the sim cards still work I wonder about the whole giving away expired sim cards in the first place.

      • This deal is effectively not a freebie, as we paid to use their ATM (compensated by card company). It's very poor customer service, which is a major issue.

And the deal confused staff (again!), which is Coles Express responsibility to make deal clear to all, and to train staff how to process all such deals.

        • Yeah good point about the ATM, that makes the expired sim card thing even worse as they are in essence making money from expired sim cards which (I assume) should be disposed of or returned to Optus.

        • @hamza23:
Staff I talked with at Coles Express said stocking of SIMs is the responsibility of Optus reps. Reps should remove all out of date SIMs when restocking.

That means complaints about staffing / training in customer relations will be dealt with differently to SIM stock & expiry issues.

Who (mis)worded the confusing promo t&c is anyone's guess. I understand from training a rep to Coles, promos are organised by the supplier, rather than Coles.

From the image on the ATM screen & voucher, the 2 SIM packs with the word 'bonus' across both could imply buying 1 $10 SIM pack with the voucher gets you the bonus $10 pack. This is supported by the unclear t&c "redeem a voucher to collect a bonus $10 Optus SIM at no additional cost". If the intention was to give away free SIMs, the words 'bonus'
& 'at no additional cost' are unnecessary.

Complaining about not getting a free $10 SIM may be futile, if the intention of this promo was actually buy one get one free. (Certainly complaining about poor customer service & misleading deal is valid.)

However, scanning the deal shows you don't need to buy the $10 pack to get the deal.

The trick is to just get staff to scan deal, rather than debate it.

        • +1

Thank you both @hamza23 and @Infidel for the very helpful comments. I have sent my complaint through on the Coles Express Feedback page, will let you know how they respond.

I don't have a receipt for day 1 (as there was no sale), or day 3 or day 4 (as I couldn't see a reason to get a receipt for simple consumables like coffee & milk). I do however have a receipt for day 2, which I'm happy to scan and send to Coles Express.

For all days, I gave Coles Express the dates, and can also give approx times. There should be security camera footage of everything, if they wish to look it up.

        • @nickj:
People usually don't ask for or keep receipts for small purchases, so I thought you might not have those. No problems.

Complaining at the time, with the facts, time & date, etc should be enough & shows you are serious in your complaint.

          Good luck!

I took a case against a medium sized business. There was no precedent under State law, so no one expected me to win. But I did, in an out of court settlement.
One factor helping my claim was a photo of the staff member taken from across the street shortly after being refused service. It helped convince the business I was serious & had documented the claim from the start.
I never submitted the photo with my claim, but it became part of the settlement. The company requested destruction, in return for a sizeable pay out ;-) I destroyed.

        • @Infidel:
          Coles Express responded as follows:

Thank you for your email regarding our Ultimo site.

Providing our customers with a great level of care and service is of the highest importance to us and we were therefore very disappointed to learn of your recent experience. We do hope you will accept our sincerest apologies.

After receiving your email we contacted the Retail Area Manager, <name-hidden>, to investigate this matter. <name-hidden> will speak with his team and will reiterate the importance of ensuring our customers have a positive and enjoyable experience at all times. We trust that you won’t encounter any similar situations in the future.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact Coles Express and we wish you safe motoring.

        • @nickj:
Stock standard initial response. Hopefully something will come out of it, but don't expect too much. You may not receive anything more.

    • Those are very bad experiences with Coles Express.

Lodge a complaint stating the facts, how you were treated, & how that made you feel. (If you have any receipts, it's handy to identify time & staff member - so send a scanned copy.) CExp needs to know what it's staff are doing wrong, to improve their business & customer relations. You may receive some compensation. (Recently received $50 Gift Card from JB for lesser poor service.)

I went to 3 stores at the end of last deal, buying 1 at each. All staff were confused by the word 'bonus'. They said it must be buy one get one free. I asked them to scan the voucher & pack, which showed it was free. They were happy to give me the pack.

My 1 SIM voucher is sitting unused until stock arrives…

    • I've just got one from Coles Express Ultimo today. I showed the voucher to a staff. The staff looked at the voucher and at first he said "you need to buy one to receive a free one" I think it's because of the word 'bonus' on the voucher. He tried to scan the sim card and voucher and showed as free. Then he gave it to me for free.

      • Good, I'm honestly glad to hear that they've got stock, will scan the sim card and the voucher if you ask, and are honouring it if they scan it. I also hope it just wasn't that there were different staff on the weekend (every day I went was a weekday).

        • Update: After Yasui's successful attempt, I tried Ultimo again on the 17th (Tuesday), and they did have a good look (at least they made a good-faith effort this time, which I am glad for) but they had no stock left. Success rate so far is only 1 successful attempt after 5 tries at Ultimo.

Used a Prepaid Eftpos Card from cashback promotion, with $0 balance on it (used all money already)

Able to do balance check and get a voucher :)

  • None left at Coles Express Calamvale :(

  • Brisbane stores may be restocking :-)

Last weekend none at Bulimba (had a long talk with manager), now 2 left on display, maybe more (Nathan checked out back). Last stock was not multifit, these are. Expiry 1/12/16 :-)

So talk with your local manager to contact Optus rep to restock!!

    • Popped into other East Brisbane Coles Express - on way to Masters to pick up Eneloop 8 pack for $12.50:-)
No stock (Cannon Hill, Tingalpa, Belmont beside Motorway). Tingalpa had 1, but it was expired & they wouldn't give it to me after a call to manager.

So it seems Bulimba contacted Optus for stock as I asked last weekend.
