Very good price, definitely deserves a + but OW has been selling it for $149 for a long time now

      I believe $129 is lower than $149.

      • +7

I believe I'm talking about the "save $50 from Optus store" part, so you actually save $20.
Otherwise, we are "saving" $4,871 from this ebay seller?

    • Price match at OW? Thanks for the OW link mate.

  • Good pm

  • Amaysim work on this?

    • Amaysim runs on the optus network so Yes it will work.

    how to unlock?

    • +1

      i had the same question

    • +2

      On Optus' website:

      Owned less than 6 months

Provided that you've recharged your Prepaid service to a minimum/accumulated amount of $80 there is no fee, otherwise a fee of $80 will apply to unlock your prepaid handset regardless of the amount you've already recharged.

      Owned longer than 6 months

Provided that you've recharged your Prepaid service to a minimum/accumulated amount of $80.00 there is no fee, otherwise a fee of $25 will apply to unlock your handset regardless of the amount you've already recharged.

Unfortunately I don't think he does Nokia optus unlocks

      • +1

Ahhh yes Bagman! Thanks! Ahhh daam, hopefully we figure out a way to get this phone unlocked on the cheap, would make a great second device!

  • I'm looking to ditch my iPhone 5 with a dying battery in the not-too-distant future. Are these phones good? Looking to try something that isn't Apple.

    • +2

buck to bang ratio this is a great phone, and it can do most things you would expect smartphones to do (call, go on facebook/ozbargain, whatssapp, etc). The only thing you still might be disappointed in is this the spoil for choice of Apple apps compared to Windows Phone's market. While it's not as if there are no great apps on the WP market, just randomly annoying things in terms of support for features (e.g. no support for official Instagram app to upload video iirc).

    • if your battery is dying take into Apple store and they will replace the phone

      • My current phone is a replacement for my previous 5 which also had its battery die. A little over it tbh.

        • Doesnt cost anything

    • you can get a replacement battery on ebay for a few bucks and DIY on a weekend. It's pretty simple. Apple is also recalling some iPhone 5 due to battery defects so you could get it replaced for free (check your serial). I replaced mine a few days prior to apple announcing the recall :P

    • I had the choice of using a hand-me-down iPhone 4S and a Lumia 630 and I chose the Lumia. The 640 is definitely better than the 630.
Can't comment on how much compared to iPhone 4S v 5

      THE Greg Rust?

  • is this phone better than iphone 6s?

    • +1

It is windows based. Plus the specs are nothing near as good as the iphone6s.
Cmon fiddycent, get with the times.

    • No

    • +3

No, but trying to compare a top-of-the-line iPhone and a low-mid range Lumia is like comparing apples with oranges (not that a Lumia is an orange).
This deal is very good value for a capable phone. IMHO iphones are overrated and definitely overpriced

  • Just as an FYI - Cranbourne store still has around 3-4 sets left.

  • +2

I have been using this phone for the past 6 months, it runs buttery smooth and battery life is amazing, easily get 2 full days on one charge. Unfortunately the app situation is not the greatest atm, but you cannot get a better phone for the price…atleast in my opinion.

    • +2

I agree you can't, especially locally with 2 years warranty. However the quality of apps is a huge neg against Windows phones at this point. Even apps like Facebook is a poor compared with android or Apple versions. For many the app gap kills Windows phones. A phone with a reasonable camera, gorilla glass 3, with good support in terms of updated software, good performance and decent battery life is impossible to find at this price on android.

  • Got one from Wynnum West. They still have plenty of stock.

  • Looks like a good spec phone for the price but Windows phone is meh.

  • Just out of interest… this phone is better than the upcoming 550 on paper.

May as well get this instead.

  • Just for everyones interest, i was in a fully fledged OPTUS shop yesterday asking about buying one of there pre paid phones outright and putting a amaysim sim in it. I was looking at several phones and was told that they have been instructed to to inform customers that these phones do not work with amaysim anymore. They will NOT let you try the sim in the shop. You buy the phone and no refunds if the amaysim sim does not work. They have had customers that have purchased Optus pre paid phones and the phones did work but people were having problems with sending and recieving txt messages. Now this may be the case or is it a scare campaign ? Who knows. I gave them a miss.

    • +1

Sounds like the rubbish i got told. I've got this exact phone, got told the same thing, but my Virgin Sim works fine

    • +3

Buying the a prepaid from stores that allow returns, like Kmart or Officeworks, will let you test the phone at home, and then take it back if it doesn't suit your needs. Just don't activate the prepaid sim card that comes with the phone and you should be fine.

The Consumer Guarantees Act is a legislation that will over ride whatever one-day training the Optus store people attended.

The Legislation specifically deals with products and services that must:

match descriptions made by the salesperson, on packaging and labels, and in promotions or advertising
match any demonstration model or sample you asked for be fit for the purpose the business told you it would be fit for and for any purpose that you made known to the business before purchasing come with full title and ownership not carry any hidden debts or extra charges
come with undisturbed possession, so no one has a right to take the goods away or prevent you from using them meet any extra promises made about performance, condition and quality, such as life time guarantees and money back offers have spare parts and repair facilities available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you were told otherwise.

If they say it is fit for work in an Optus network then it must be fit for work on an Optus network even by any other name.

Your Ombudsman will of course address the issues and as well as Fair Trading Office.

Recently I had an issue with Optus store people not understanding consumer legislation argued with me and then I took it to Ombudsman who then head office refund immediately/ shows you how little their staff know about laws and they are challenging customers in the hope customers get intimidated. Don't! They are owned by the Singapore government quite well known in using legal avenues to silent any dissent, they think they can use this in business abroad as well.

      • Presumably if they specifically tell you that it wont work with Amaysim (or you might have issues) then you wouldn't be covered by this?

  • Just a note for everyone, internal memory is 8GB out of which around 3.2GB is pre-filled. Many apps do not allow to be installed on SDCard.

    • +3

      Good thing there's no apps.

    • +2

"Many" is a bit misleading. Most allow you to install on an SD Card, and I say "most" as in "the significantly large majority". I have well over 200 apps installed on my 735 and there are only 5 3rd party apps that don't allow installation on the SD card. About a dozen MS apps don't allow SD Card installation, but they're all small in size apart from OneDrive which can get quite big.

tl;dr: 8GB internal is fine as 99.9% of apps support SD Card installs.

      • May be it was my choice, as the ones I were trying were telling me it can only be installed on internal storage w.g. WhatsApp, few from Nokia itself to do with pictures and videos.

Still like the phone performance wise especially when I will only be using it with fewer apps.

        • Yeh WhatsApp and the Nokia/MS ones are really the only ones that I have that don't allow SD card installation.

      • +1

Over 200 apps, oh boy. I start to stress myself for cleanup after 30 or so.

        • +1

Yeh I only use about 15 of them haha. Just get them in case I ever do need to use them, and I have a 64GB SD Card so space isn't really an issue yet.

      • There are 200 apps on wp8 worth using? Let us know which ones

        • If it's not made by Google or Snapchat then it's usually there. Having said that, I only use ~15 of those 200+ haha.

    Got mine for $89.

They had an advert for $89 still up from a previous promo (?)

Anyway they honoured the price. BARGAIN!!

    • which Kmart is this?

      • +1

        Caboolture, Qld.

It was the last one in that store and they have since pulled the $89 sticker.

Reading the fine print on the promo card, it’s dated Nov 2015 so not sure if this was a promo that just finished or went up too early. Either way, I was happy to pay $129 but $89 is a no brainer for this phone. The box comes in an Optus sleeve but is an ‘unbranded’ Microsoft box underneath. No branding on the boot up screen too. Very nice. Popped my Voda sim in and alas it’s locked to Optus. Oh well, can’t win them all ;)

    • +1

That's a sweet price. Good on you.

  • $49 for the Leon is a phenomenal price too, unfortunately that doesn't appear it was nationwide.

  • How good is the camera on this?

    • That's what anandtech has to say about the camera

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/9333/the-microsoft-lumia-640-r…

"As far as smartphones in the $100-150 range go, the Lumia 640 definitely has the best camera I've seen to date."

      • How stiff is the competition in that segment? Android phones have shithouse cameras in that price range

        • Most phone's suck in that price range I guess. If you read the anandtech review, they suggest the 640 is about on par with the nexus 5. Mind you the nexus 5 isn't that great in the camera department. The best camera I've used in a phone under $200 was the Lumia 830, but that was an one off deal it seems.

    • +1

I'm no photographer, this is general consumer point of view.

I took the 640 and iPhone 6s out for a test yesterday. The 640 very much holds it's own.

Detail out of the centre focus was a bit 'smoothed out' but this is only if you are looking at it at full crop. The iPhone kept the colour more realistic however you would only really notice in a side by side comparison. I didn't mind the slightly warmer tones of the 640.

Macro performed just a good as the iPhone too.

      Was quite surprised.

  • So will this deal ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220278 )work with this phone? Or do you have to use the sim included with the phone?

    • +2

Any optus sim will work to an optus locked phone. Only sims like telstra will not work, need to get it unlocked.

  • +2

Great deal! I purchased one tonight. It was locked, but Optus unlocked it via their chat for free (I'm an existing prepaid customer).

    Maybe we could add the following to the post - I've never seen a non-iPhone with such a wide range of support. This will work on all 3G GSM networks in the world and most 4G networks too. Here are the bands listed on the box;

    GSM (2G) Quad
    WCDMA (3G) 1, 2, 4, 5, 8
    LTE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 28, 38, 40

    • hey do I need to be on prepaid for long to unlock or just give then an active Optus prepaid number? really want to get one if this is the case man.

      • Not sure mate. I was a Optus prepaid customer for 2 years and just changed to amaysim ($10 for 3 months) last week and I was hoping they wouldn't check or that their system hadn't updated.

I was prepared to pay the $80 u unlock fee ($209 was still a good deal for me). Luckily I didn't have to.

P.s. The phone does work on amaysim (Optus network), but I needed it to be unlocked because I'm moving to the uk in January. With those bands it will work everywhere, including in the US, which is usually difficult for foreign phones because of the frequencies they use.
