        • @theworks: Which ones didn't? If your basing it on the lists posted I think you will find they are store specific, if your making the claim it doesn't meet guidelines you need to show proof not visa versa.

    • Staff in the store i visited could not be nice enough, even apologised for a short delay and were extremely helpful.
I treated them with the same respect and much thanks in return.
I even revisited the store to ask questions on behalf of friends stuck at work, once again, they couldn't have been more helpful and polite.

I can see no point in getting abusive, no one every got far from being a prick.

    • +1

You should add something to your original post reminding people to be polite. Ditto for when you make one tomorrow.

The staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful despite there being about ~10 people per staff member in the store.

    • +2

Not for abusing staff but the way this clearance has been handled by DS has been atrocious. I wasted three hours this morning going around to three stores and many of them had display TVs, consoles and laptops but all were 20% or 10% or manager's specials 'ask us' deals. The only signs of any clearance sales were the usual bargain bins. It has been extremely disappointing. The staff have been overwhelmed and when I inquired did not bother to scan the items I asked about because they were in such a rush. I did not abuse the staff but if there was a more transparent, uniform sale throughout all stores these problems would not occur. As is I have picked up nothing from this sale and wasted my time.

      • The whole idea of a 'clearance sale' is to clear out old and display stock. Every store has different product ranges and many stores manage their stock well by selling old units prior to these sort of sales for higher prices which is good for business. It is difficult to be transparent and uniform throughout all stores when all stores and their stock on hand is very very different.

As an Ex Dick Smith Store Manager of many years who weathered the clearances of 2012 and 2013, Including the infamous Gaming Sale this is not surprising in the least. While a huge majority of Ozbargainers are perfectly fine (and actually awesome customers - buying old stock helps out big time!) there was always a tiny minority that would be abusive and harass us/claim we had bought all the stock for ourselves when we never stocked the items they were looking for in the first place (or sold out of them 12 months earlier).

Realistically, in the store I operated? We very rarely purchased clearance stock. I'm not saying that staff didn't in general on a state or nationwide level, but at the very least in my store we didn't. My staff were too poor, too young, too irresponsible or too time poor to have the cash or a credit card to be able to buy stuff in bulk to resell on Gumtree or eBay. And most of the time? I ran the store in such a way that I cleared a large majority of the stock through doing my own in store markdowns (ironically, you'd get in trouble for this and the current management probably would have fired me for doing what I did) before it got to the point that they'd throw it onto this kind of huge clearance. With the staffing levels they have these days post-IPO, barely any stores have the time to get everything they sell on display, let alone the manpower to print up several hundred clearance tickets (especially when they banned managers from paying people to stay after or come in before business hours to ticket everything - managers would either need to come in themselves for no extra money at 6 or 7am to ticket everything, or they'd just have to attempt to do it during business hours) and get them displayed on all the different clearance items. Morale would be even worse now then it was back in the Woolies Sell-off or Anchorage Acquisition days, so most of the managers probably don't give a (profanity) as well - especially since most of them are probably working 7 days a week 10hrs a day through December to keep their store from falling apart.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my opinion. Feel free to ask me anything else… I haven't worked for the business since 2013 though (and all the managers I worked with quit in 2013 pre-IPO because they all saw the writing on the wall), so I'm not sure how much, if anything has changed since. One thing I will say though, Fairfax's reports of 70% off everything is pretty obviously pulled out of their arse. It'll probably be everything they want to clear out before the end of the year (all non active lines, any categories they're looking to exit (I reckon they'll exit a bunch of categories over christmas - thats quite clear already with gaming and TVs/AV plus the bulk of their house brand stock which has been reported as been a key problem for DSE at the moment) up to the value of the $50 million that they reported to share holders. Will they survive? I think they will, but not in the stores current form and formats. They have close to 500 outlets across AU/NZ, it would be the largest retail closure in decades (if not ever) in Australia, and at the moment the business is very cheap for another company to take over, remodel (properly - not just pump and dump it like Anchorage did and do bugger all) and start fresh. I would, however get rid of any gift cards you have ASAP regardless.

Thanks for your account of what has happened in the past :)

As with most things the minority on both sides tends to ruin it for all.
The store clerk serving me told me with a big grin on his face that there was no point looking for a Xbox One in Mackay as he had cleared out both stores.

I am easy going so I just laughed and offered him $250 for one and proceeded to buy the dSLR, but if he had done that to someone else I can see why they might get their nose out of joint.

I honestly do feel for that staff, and have done my best to be as gentle on them as I can as they are all burnt out.
But the same staff member cleared the store of cheap WiiU's during the sale of 2013 ;) And taking 6 Xboxes isn't really fair when we are lining up at 9am.

        • Understand that scenario 100% - what an asshole. Personally my account from the clearances back then at least in the part of the country I worked in I'd say that kind of staff purchasing was definitely going on in certain stores, but it was far from the majority. Middle Management had no way to control it, because the staff member could just slip it through as a cash transaction if they really wanted to and nobody would even be able to track it back.

I'd be expecting it to happen way, way more now considering the current state of the business. Morale would be even lower then the woolies sell-off days.

        • @Boochan:

Yea, I was talking to some of the staff today and a heap of stock that should have been there simply wasn't.
So it is either shrinkage "stolen" or they have taken the stock to buy the following day.

not to worry, everyone seems to be getting at least something.
Just a shame as you can see the stock sitting there and you get your hopes up, only to have it dashed at the last minute.

But they will get to see my smiling face every day at 9am this week, maybe they will get sick of seeing me and slide me a good deal ;)
Lucky my lunch breaks are flexible and I start at 6am so I am fortunate enough to be able to make it in every day :)

As a prior manager of a large DS store who has recently moved on, you have hit the nail on the head with exactly everything you have said.

    • While I agree that at minimum, it's disappointing to hear there are people abusing staff, in some instances I can appreciate why.
For example, I placed an order with a Sydney store yesterday and was advised what was and was not in stock, including numbers (I didn't get everything I was seeking, not even close, yet did get some things) and that the order would be ready to be picked up from the companies head office/warehouse today.
Went there and they knew nothing about it, no correspondence from the store staff member, who's conveniently not on shift today.
Spent my time with store and Head Office staff trying to sort out the mess a store staff member created, most likely to ensure I leave the store, as it's easier to lie, than to do their job apparently.
There is a staff reputation issue, this is the third time I've experienced issues with staff supposedly doing something for me and failing to.
There are members here who confirmed there's stock that has magically sold outside of trading hours.

It is these issues which creates a toxic environment for all parties and until Dick Smith takes ownership for their staffs attitude and rectifies these issues to ensure the customer is not at a loss due to these rogue elements within their customer service, they will face a backlash from customers and issues like this will continue to dog their reputation and affect all staff.

Now to flip the script so to speak, I am pleasantly surprised to see staff at the head office shop at the Head Office store at end of trade and being told by the store manager that items are out of stock, rather than boxes magically appear from nowhere with their name upon them.

    • Thanks tightarse for highlighting this.

Myself, as a previous manager of a large DS store, and still with close ties with several stores and staff, I was appalled by the way many customers simply acted like animals towards the staff, with many being subjected to all sorts of verbal abuse, rudeness and in one incident which the staff member didn't want to escalate, being physically threatened.

From what I witnessed, most customers were patient and understanding, especially given my old store had 3 new 17-20yo Christmas casual staff working, whom are still getting used to the store and processes and certainly not used to the level of chaos that ensued from these sales.

I hope those who snagged a bargain are happy. I hope those who missed out and acted untoward any other customer and or staff member will reconsider their behaviour.

  • Just bought a new PVR9600 TV recorded with 3 tuners and 1TB hard drive for $89 at Sydney mid city store. Needed a new tuner this is a bonus.

    • Did that scan that way or did they do an adjustment?

      • +1

Scanned that way they had a paper on it was on clearance desk

        • Thanks, I think there's stock at my local.

  • So just to confirm, can we use the 5% off woolies gift card from Groupon to buy from DSE?

Or would I have to buy a dedicated DSE gift card from a woolies store with my egift card??

    Cheers

    • +1

Better buy it from Coles with 10%

      • Oh really? Sorry, how do I get the 10% from coles?

Only know about the woolies one from groupon/cashrewards..

        Thanks in advance!

  • +1

Sorry to hear TA. At the stores I have been too everyone has been polite.

cameras not a lot, only dslsr left is nikon d3300 which i believe is still expensive….

games are old ones which bigw/target had on sale in the past few months already….

    • They claimed that all TVs over 50" on clearance are "damaged" and they are currently arguing with the manufacturer to get them repaired.

  • What xbox one stuff is on offer games and hardware, even headsets my local just had games really nothing to get excited about price wise.
What set top boxes do they have on offer abd any android type boxes the ones you can add apps to for say kodi etc?
What about gadgets dont know what i need to stream from my pc to my tv or tvs thought of using a hdmi but dont think pc has hdmi.

  • Nothing left at DS Moonee Ponds…

    • Yep went to Moonee Ponds as well. Every couple of minutes someone went up and asked for the 70% off. Looks like these discounts are on old stock. None of the models listed were in store.

Met a couple of frustrated OzBargainers on their lunch breaks.

Dicksmith Clearance Day 3: Carpets, Display Cabinets, Eftpos machines, personalised name tags.. and Manager's special: Dick Smith Sign!!

    • I'll pay $100 for the till and hope that some people have been snapping up these bargains with cash :P

    • Haha! Clearance day 4: Deeds to the business

  • Checked out chadstone David Jones electronics section. Sales people jumping from one excuse to another when I ask for TV'S, there are a few that's over 1500 if anyone's interested (still super bargains, just out of my reach) Left with the funny feeling that they might be keeping the best deals for them selves.

    • Is there anything in DSE store?

      • Not much was left by the time I got there. A couple of ex display tvs without stands and that was about it. Didn't check the cables etc.

  • Anyone had any luck around the western area tried Fairfield and wetherill park both had nothing

  • So I managed to get 2 Harmony Ultimates finally. :P
Went to Morley Galleria, guy tells me that they have them in stock but he won't sell them to me for under $250. In hindsight he must've thought I meant the Harmony Ultimate One remote as that's usually $289. Anyways I go across the road to another Dick Smith and they don't have any on the shelf and since the staff are busy I just give up and go do some food shopping etc.
I figure I'll give the Galleria one another shot as maybe the word of the sale would've gotten through by now, and a really helpful girl looked it up and found they have no stock but the Dick Smith across the road have 2. So I walk rather quickly back and talk to a staff member and they still have both of them. So my morning wasn't wasted. :P
Also picked up a Sony DualShock 3 charging hub for $4.50 which I've been looking for anyway, so all good. :)

    • How much were the harmony ultimates??

      • $100 each. Marked down from $485. Although in reality you can get them elsewhere for under $350 online.

      • They are $100…opps too slow.

    • How much are the harmonys?

  • Anybody willing to pick up a Canon D700 from Emerald for me? Will organise to pay for shipping and a little bonus or something! I know it's a long shot, but hey, worth trying!!! Thanks all, happy bargain hunting!

  • Purchased a macbook pro 2014 for $199. Really old stock but I think it's worth it considering AUD has dropped

    • +1

      $1199 or $199?

      • +1

$199 no way I would pay over a grand.

        • $199 that is a bargain which store?

        • Fremantle WA, the guys are really heplful there, they have a manager which is switched on so the workers can't hoard trolleys worth of goods at the back.

        • @FrankMt:
That sounds like a pricing error. Me and another person on here paid $1199. well done

        • @FrankMt:

Is that for a 2014 model? What are the specs of it?

        • It was a 2014 model though, must have been gathering dust out the back

        • @ahara:

          mine is a late 2013 model. Didn't get the 2014 model! :(

        • I paid 1199 as well for the 2014 retina macbook pro. Still a great price but not 199.

        • Was it new or ex display. Store I was at had the 2013 ex display and 2014 brand new for the strange price. Really wierd as the 2014 has faster cpu twice hte ram etc.

      • If its $199, that's a bargain!

        • That's a steal

    • -3

      I will pay u 300$ cash tonight ;)

  • I might mosey on down to Brisbane CBD DJ's and see what's cookin'.

    • +2

I was there yesterday - all the cameras went yesterday morning before I got there - they only carry a very limited range of items.

    • There are 2 JVC 40"($649) and 50"($699) in Brisbane CBD DJ's. I asked the sales girl very politely about clearance prices on JVC. She checked it and said she got harassed by people about these TVs and there is no special apart from the marked price. Tried other guy with a long beard. He was putting on yellow slips and said check the yellow slip for specials otherwise whatever is marked is the final price.

  • Lots of Blu Rays/ PVR where I am, looking for a top end one, any suggests as the sales assistant is over run

    • lol your from the moon, where are you actually I need a new PVR for mum for xmas

      • NOT IN STOCK IN WESTERN MELBOURNE, CALLED MANY STORES, NO LUCK…

        • Just as well i'm not in Melbourne then…..

  • +6

Went to the Brandon Park store, and the only thing in there that caught my eye was the salesperson. Can't really be bothered wasting time hounding after these elusive deals, I'm giving up.

    • +2

      any pics?

  • anything at parramatra?

    • +3

A whole load of fully sick people…

  • was just at the chadstone store, most stuff sold out, lots of crappy xbox games left. no camera, maybe some ipads. the guy did bring out a few floor stock tv's. had a dick smith branded 42" for $30 (no stand, wall mountable only)

    • Do Dick Smith TV's support Mpeg4? :P

      • For Nine HD? :P

  • +1

It would be helpful if people mentioned the store name with their bargain acquisition.

    • +1 as mentioned.

  • FYI Powerbanks etc are down to $15-$25 (Plox, Kaiser Bass etc).

  • Anything good DS Chatswood?

    • Last time I checked, a couple hours ago, there seemed to be hardly anything left. Did see a Nikon D3200 on the display with a sign saying TLK for $898 - had a chuckle so not sure if that is part of the deal.

  • Saw diablo 3 for $10 at a few stores. Would be a bargain in other circumstances but mediocre to what we're seeing.

    • +1

Especially when it was $5 in their previous 'clearance'.

  • So have they closed their doors yet guys? Is it over?

  • The guys at Carlingford NSW Store must have missed the memo; nothing much is on sale and definitely not the Sammy tablets that I was after. In fact the scanned price are more expensive than Target's! On a positive note, very helpful and happy team of staff at the Carlingford store - a stark contrast to the Parramatta NSW store…..

  • Westfield Sydney had the LG 65" for $900 still available about an hour ago.

    • Retail price?

  • +6

    Success story here.
Was looking for a TV for a while, my local DSE were extremely friendly and one the managers was very kind about it all. Busy day for them no doubt. Found a display Sony 40" LED TV for 60$. They were getting hammered by lots of other people, but he took the time to go through the list of discounted TVs with me. I did get turned down from several other DSEs even though they had stock listed on their system.
Good luck all, and remember to always be polite!

  • +1

not bad. walked in just to browse, walked out with a LG 40in UHD tv for $239.70. (model 40UB800T) - DSE Shepparton VIC

    • Great bargain !! Which store ?

      • DSE Shepparton VIC

    • Yep, thats a good deal
Store i was in had a slightly newer model of the same thing, but wanted $600+ for it at the sale price

      • ONLY THE DISPLAYS ARE VERY CHEAP..

        • It was a display set

  • Can people post store names pretty please.

  • +1
