why would you pre-order a windows phone?
not like it will never get sold out.

    • +7

Thanks for the comment! The value is in the gift cards and the bonus MicroSD card, not about it selling out.

For myself, I have used Windows Phones for a while and despite the app gap, I like using them and this deal makes the latest phone a little cheaper.

        • @billy77: Pot and wenches for mine.

    • +2

It's not like they will ever get sold out.

      • Maybe not, but this has been one of the better deals for these specific phones prior to launch.

    • +12

WHy would you preorder an iphone? They always have stock on hand to sell to idiots.
Were you born in the bush?

    • -1

Why would you pre-order an iphone? Or a samsung galaxy? Pretty much applies to any phone someone is after. The MS store is currently out of stock for the 950XL for what it's worth anyway.

      • -1

"Why would you pre-order an iphone?"

well thats easy - they sell out very VERY quickly and usually there's thousands of people in line for them.

    • +14

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. People pre-order things all the time!

    • +1

But it's ok to pre order an iphone or android phone?

    • +11

That really says a lot about your "personality".. LOL..

    • A handful of people have if the Whirlpool forums are a guide of interest. Apple Music isn't a must have app yet, Spotify, Pandora etc are all available on the platform.

      Pintrest, I don't use it, so I didn't realise it wasn't available.

      Thanks for the laugh.

      ……BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

    • Fitbit are compatible, maybe do some research before posting crap.

Honestly - I think these phones are probably priced a bit too high for what they are, despite being cool and able to turn into a full desktop etc. I'm willing to bet that it will be more like $680-$750 or so within 3 months at discounted shops like Mobileciti or something by then. This is a better price than getting the 10% GV's, $25 off and the MicroSD card (which is worth $150-250 depending where you got it from).

    • +3

I do agree that these a probably priced a little higher than I'd like, however the phones they will be replacing are in dire need of replacement and this deal makes the pill a little easier to swallow.

  • I have never noticed a windows phone for more than 5-600 even the flagship ones, not sure if these are worth double the amount.

    • Pretty sure the 1020 was about $800 or so at launch.. Dropped to more reasonable levels about 3-6 months later compared to rest of the market (which also had the flagships at $800 like the S4 and iPh5).

    • Lumia 920 was $819 RRP back in 2012 so…

    • +1

      I meant deals posted here.

    • If you are used to buying flagships for around 5-600 like deals usually are on ozbargain than it hard to justify paying so much more for a windows phone.

Especially after watching something like this and seeing how inferior the performance is against their peers.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wne8m9qCFs

I mean even the G4 that can be bought locally significantly cheaper than this beats the 950 by over a minute.

      • It's an unfair assessment though since this is a pre-order phone that has not even been out on the market yet. I would argue that you couldnt get the G4 for less than $900 or so at launch as an example. Its only after 6-9 months into the life cycle that its dropped to the $600 mark or so. As I said above - this will happen to the 950/XL no doubt.. an even in a shorter time period of maybe after Christmas if sales are slow. Hence my warning to everyone - if you can wait, then wait.. Dont jump on now given knowledge of supply and demand.

I was contemplating this deal, as well as the Optus one last week. The one thing I am still a little concerned about is the way this phone is going to work with Continuum.

And for those trying to have a go at the "app gap", you've obviously never used a Windows phone before. My Lumia 1020 does everything I still need it to do, and has office and adobe integrated into the standard UI. The only actual apps I've bothered downloading are a few games.

    • I had a play with Continuum at the Microsoft Store yesterday and I can definitely see some benefits if you don't want to carry a laptop around with you, and have access to a screen. However, I wouldn't personally be using it as a big part of what I use the phone for.

      • Continuum is only useful if you carry a monitor with you where ever you go. Last check no one carries a monitor and a phone. Unless you are mental.

        • +1

I don't think so. The monitor could be the TV in your hotel room, in the library, office, or airport.

        • @Ashman247: No no no, you need to carry around a monitor, keyboard and mouse that is why it's stupid. Once Apple comes out with its version of Continuum, then they will be able to be used with hotel TVs, hot desk it, etc.

        • @sallan75:

I'm not sure you understand how Continuum works.

Or maybe you haven't used an Android or iOS device and aren't aware of all the apps you're missing out on.

      • I have a Lumia 930 and an Ipad Mini 2. I barely use the iPad, the Lumia 930 does pretty much everything I need it to. Some people need lots of apps, some people don't.

  • +3

Yup, bought a XL. Still had my amex deal to use so saved another $50 myself.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/217148

  • +1

Might buy the XL when it's down to $400 hopefully in 12 months time..

    • -6

      correction 1-2 months time

  • "Windows phones still have a huge app deficit compared to iPhone and Android. The 950's standout Continuum feature is buggy and cumbersome, and requires separate hardware to use. The phone's ho-hum design feels dated." ………………………

    • +1

Except that you can run Android apps on it.
      Maybe iPhone apps next year.

    • My biggest issue is probably less on the app gap but the price gap between the different platforms for the same app. Windows Store tends to be around 25% higher overall than the equivalent or same application on Google and Apple stores. Understand the supply demand thing that basically means higher cost to get the software on a smaller platform, but Microsoft needs people on this platform and expects everyone to repay their entire catalog on the other platform's again? hmmm..

      • Microsoft and Android are cheaper than iOS for apps if you use telstra sim pack credit normally $10 for $30.

        • Not if you want to take the other funny money discounts into play.. Like HN's BOGOF $20 cards or the almost regular 10-25% off their itunes cards.

        • @bchliu:

          Do the maths.

          Hint:

One gives you more than buy one get one free

Also sometimes you get telstra $30 sim packs for $1. That's 30 times the amount, not 2 times…

    • totally agree.

  • I always wonder the impact to battery life if one really uses this as a computer replacement on a regular basis.

  • +4

This phone has a removable battery. And SD card slot. And it's a flagship device.

Props to M$ to making it like it should be.

I really liked my Windows Phone despite its flaws. I personally think Windows Phone had the biggest potential when I bought mine in 2013, simply because of how Windows OS was broadly used in desktop market.

It's a shame that MS don't care about the mobile phone market as much as they should. Their updates and what they offer are at least one generation behind where is should be.

Windows Phone 8 had to be what Windows Phone 8.1 was at least. Windows Phone 8.1 should've included the idea of universal apps and better integration/communication between phone and desktop. Since Windows 8 and 8.1 was about merging the mobile OS and desktop OS, it would've made sense. The disappointment/distrust built from MS ditching Windows Mobile 7 would've at least been negated somewhat by the hypes of phones being able to run apps that runs in X86 environment. As Windows tablet became more popular from Intel dumping Baytrail CPU at unreasonably low price, universal apps would've had that push that it requires to start developers to develop. Continuum and phones that can do continuum should've been out last year at least when the Windows Phone flagships were non-existent and becoming outdated. I personally think we should have a x86 phone right now (even if it came out this year, it's bloody late), MS is just acting stupidly slow.

It's really sad to see potentials being wasted like this. That said, Windows Phone is alright if you know what you are getting into. I wouldn't argue against the "app gap" since I did experience it. That said Windows as a phone OS isn't half bad, Windows 10 Mobile did fix a lot of issues with Windows Phone 8.1. I'd argue that the potential is still there.

Im just loving all the Windows phone bashing … If you arent interested in the phone or the deal why are you even bothering commenting

Anyone worth there spit in a Flagship windows phone is going to do a little research before they sink this type of money into it.

You think people who want a Windows phone dont know about the the app gap?
FML … do something more productive with your time than bashing someone who has put a deal on a Windows phone for all intents and purposes … FFS … go find a iphone or android deal and post it up

    • You think people who want a Windows phone dont know about the the app gap?

Actually given the knowledge of many people about phones, warnings on Windows Phone deals are valid. Secondly given the history of rapid price falls for Windows Phones most people would be best advised to wait a couple of months. Thirdly look at Microsoft's history in abandoning technology: 6 months ago we were promised an Android run-time, but last month it was cancelled.

    • During 3gs era, people used to say android app not as much as apple, and now seem liked history repeated. So do the big screen and high res debate…. will windows app number managed to grow? I don't know, let time to prove it. One thing that i am pretty sure is i will definitely not go for this for the $1000+ price tag. $700+ is ideal. Next week HN will had it in store and JB next month, can't wait to go in store to have a look. Also for the continuum thingy, i thought note 2 smart dock is pretty much the same thing?

      • +1

"let time to prove it". exactly! windows phone was released in 2010 so they've only had 5 years to get developers on board. another 5 should do the trick!

  • +3

The price point is totally wrong for an item not compatible with thousands of apps.

You have to wonder why Telstra Vodafone and Optus did not leap up to carry these and offer customers preorder that's because they know it's a disaster, no one will pay monthly for a Lumia. Actually no one will buy it, the Samsungs and Iphone will fly off the shelves but Lumias? They stay on the shelves all the time.

    • Err.. Optus did Leap to the deal with giving out XBox One's with their preorders.. Can't beat that ($400) for discount.

    • +2

      Haha…

      thousands of apps

I'm happy the Windows Store isn't filled with thousands of games (Flappy Bird, Angry Birds etc.), but hey, whatever you need to boost those app numbers to make you feel more comfortable about your choice of mobile OS right?

You have to wonder why Telstra Vodafone and Optus did not leap up to carry these and offer customers preorder that's because they know it's a disaster. no one will pay monthly for a Lumia.

Optus had the Xbox deal and looks like they are announcing their orders will come with a redemption code for the Display Dock shortly. Look back at the Lumia deals and see the votes and comments to see how many people got the deal.

Actually no one will buy it, the Samsungs and Iphone will fly off the shelves but Lumias? They stay on the shelves all the time.

Again, look back at the deals, plenty of people bought it and plenty more will. My order is off the shelve and with a courier as we speak, same with many other people.

If the phone/OS isn't for you, why bother commenting here? Move on and use your thousands of apps and be happy. If you are invested (financially and emotionally) in another platform, guess what? That's perfectly fine!

      • Optus had the Xbox deal and looks like they are announcing their orders will come with a redemption code for the Display Dock shortly. Look back at the Lumia deals and see the votes and comments to see how many people got the deal.

Damn! I hope Telstra can come up with something remotely competitive.
