  • Deal on the 532 is a copy of the bigw deal but one day earlier. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223954

    • pity it's locked to Telstra :(

    • Its not a copy this deal starts a day early and also means a chance for someone to purchase the item elsewhere if there is no stock remaining at their Big W

  • Do these work with Aldi sims?

    • +2

No, Telstra lock phone do not support ALDI's sim card.
(PS: Tried 6 months ago, not sure now)

      • +1

        Nope, still no work…

      • exception: telstra tempo supports ALDI sim, wihout unlocked.

  • +8

I think if you get it at Woolies and also spend an extra $1 to make a total of $30 and scan the EDR Card by Sunday this week, you will get $5 credit on the EDR to spend in future. This makes the deal even sweeter and also better than BigW, I guess.

    • +1

Only if you received the email, as I'm pretty sure it's targeted. I also have $10 off $10+ spend at Big W interestingly enough.

      • I scored the $10 one too. Love free $'s..

    • Guess it doesn't apply to me, but what's the EDR card?

      • +1

        EveryDayRewards.
        Now rebadged to Woolworths Rewards.
        Newer name, crappier rewards.

        • ah thanks! Yeah bugger they don't do flyer points anymore :(

        • Yep, told them to put it where the sun don't shine.

  • Any way to unlock it?

  • +1

That's the only thing that kept me from buying this phone even though it has had numerous good deals over time… It is costly to unlock.

Once the cost of unlocking is added in, the 4GX buzz becomes a better deal for not much more.

  • How good is phone?

    • its not too bad for a windows phone.
      no complaints,

bit clunky looking but it all works well

    • I bought one in the last sale and was pleasantly surprised. Screen is crappy especially in sunlight and there's no camera flash but for $29 I don't care. In full lighting, the camera was acceptable to me. Coming from Android, the OS is actually not too bad to use. I'm not a big app user so I don't care about things like Snapchat but do your research. As a phone, call quality is fine (I was running it on Boost, unlocked for $20 from Bagman and now on amaysim on the $10 Coles deal). For me, this phone was a stop gap between my old one dying and the new Moto G I picked up in the eBay 20% off sale.

      • -2

This is a Microsoft Windows Lumia phone with Windows 8.1 operating system. Very different from Android OS.

    • -1

      IPhone 3 equivalent

    • Nope, cheap and nasty to be honest…. And I'm a windows phone user.

    • I've been using one with the Win 10 technical preview for months. Find the OS much more clean and intuitive than ios or android. The phone itself has good build quality but with low spec components.

That said with W10 preview the OS runs very smoothly with a pretty similar interface to tablet mode in win10 desktop.

  • Does anyone know how to actually get one?

    • +6

you walk into a Woolies store and buy it on the 9th? Or is this a trick question? I'm interested in purchasing two for the in-laws so I'd like to know if there's anything I need to look out for..

      • You will probably also need to show ID.

        • +3

I've never had to show ID after the new legislation came in, it's all done via phone/internuts whne you activate the sim.

        • -1

@Diji1: Yeah, which is wrong. They're supposed to take ID at point of sale too.

        • +1

@kipps: Since when? I thought this hasn't been required for a while now?

        • i just purchased one in Perth and had to show ID

        • I bought one in Qld and wasn't asked for ID.

      • I meant never had much luck with stock

    • Get there early?

      • They seem to go after an hour of opening every time and appeared on eBay

  • I don't think it supports USB tethering.

    • +4

Hmm, never tried that with mine, but it does at least support Wi-Fi Tethering.

  • +3

Good cheap phone to get for a taste of what a wp is like. Does have glance and double tap too wake. Getting wm10 update, can't go wrong for $29.

  • How long will the 5GB data last? It said the simcard once activated will only last for 10 days. Will it be the same with the data?

    • +3

I'm using it now. It lasts up to 28 days

  • Are these 4G and can they be used at a hotspot?

    • 3.5G, and the old Lumia 520 can be used as a hotspot so I'd be suprised if the 532 can't.

  • They can be used as a hotspot. I like my 532 but I am upgrading to a 640 which came with headphones. The screen is not easy to see in bright sunlight and the battery won't last a day if you get on the internet (wifi) but they are way better than the equivalent android phones.

    • Way worse than Android phones, IMHO.

      • +3

Yeah no where near as good as the recent Telstra Buzz, zte fit, or Y550.

        • From the camera Photos on reviews i can see the camera on the lumia is so much better compared to my ZTE Fit.

Or am i missing some magical thing because my Iphone3 camera is better than my ZTE Fit.

        • @Tehcookiemonsta:

I have owned both and wouldn't use either one to take photo's with. I don't think the Lumia is any better, it's still a pos. The only useful thing with the Fit it has a flash which you can use as a torch. Yeah my iPad has a better camera and I wouldn't use it for taking pictures either.

  • Sorry about this question but how old do you need to be to buy it?

    • +1

Some stores ask you to fill out the AMTA form, in which case you'd have to be at least 18(happy to be corrected if wrong). Many stores don't bother with AMTA forms now because the ID verification is done when you activate the SIM inside the package.

  • +2

Probably need to be born before 23rd March 2009

    • LOL - now I get it, took me a minute, surely the poster is not 6 3/4 years old?

      • Nah I'm not 3/4 years old .

  • I have a larger, main phone, and looking at grabbing this smaller phone to use when I go jogging / out etc.

My main phone uses a nano sim (Telstra). Would it be possible to use a nano-to-micro sim card adapter on this?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • +2

you need a "noosy" kit - google it or look on ebay

      • Sweet, thanks guys.

update: Noosy adapter purchased from eBay. Cheers.

        • +1

For anyone else looking to do similar, just wander in to Officeworks/Woollies/Coles/wherever and grab the cheapest SIM only pack they have. Don't bother activating it, you're only after the adapters that tend to come as standard with every SIM. Look at the pack, if it says "fits nano/micro" then you're good to go. I did that for my last phone, I think it cost me a dollar or maybe two.

  • This is an awesome phone. I have one. I have always had the Lumia phones. 920 925 930 and now this too. It's an amazing phone and it can handle a beating. The size makes it very easy to able to touch all corners of the screen and use the phone single handed. Battery life lasts ne into the next day using Bluetooth and WiFi.

    Grab one. Enjoy

    • +1

Can handle a beating, so what you are saying is its more fit for purpose than the massively more expensive iphone 5 that can't be dropped 1 foot without shattering? (been burned by that a couple of times). I also have a lumia but not this model and its fine, need more people to get them so developers take them seriously and make more apps!

      • Phones are meant to be dropped.

        • Apple knows this. It's why they make their phones so fragile. More money to them for repairs/replacements.

  • +1

The Lumia 532 is an awesome budget smartphone. Fast and snappy. Size manageable. Tough as nails screen despite not being Gorilla glass. The only downside I have for it is the display is quite poor (quite grainy) but you don't notice it so much when watching a video or viewing pictures - mostly only when browsing masses of white webpages. Could use a flash for the camera too since the camera is actually quite good.

I'd recommend this phone over any <$100 Android simply because Windows Phone is more efficient (much like iOS) so the lower specs won't keep you down. Much more appealing UI and features too.

I recently upgraded and currently use the Lumia 830. Great phones these Lumias.

    • Its rubbish. Apps kill it. Look at bank apps. CBA last updated end of 2013, ANZ and Westpac don't exist. NAB is sort of updated. Microsoft doesn't care about it, devs don't care about it. May as well pick up a Pixi 4.5 from Optus or a Y5 from Telstra. This ain't worth $29.

      • The 5GB is $29, the phone is a free extra.

    • +1

Windows phone being more efficient only would matter if it's being compared to the exact same hardware. Once you increase that budget beyond $29 there's Android alternatives with superior hardware. s410 or better and 1gb of ram phones perform quite well, noticeble speed bump over the 532. The screen on phones like the Buzz are better, 4gx is a nice touch, and a flash on the camera is nice for a torch atleast.

After using windows phone you notice the slow animations and how sluggish can be at loading apps. You'll also notice the reloading of webpages in the browser regularly. Even on the more expensive phones with vastly more ram it's an issue. Watch this speed test that compares loading the same applications on the various platforms, and watch it gets slaughtered by Android phone with the exact same SoC, amount of ram and screen res.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wne8m9qCFs

Now if windows phones were more efficient they wouldn't lose out by such a huge margin in such a scenario.

Here's another example of Windows phones being beaten consistently against android phones with exact same SoC, ram and resolution screen.
      http://www.anandtech.com/show/9333/the-microsoft-lumia-640-r…

The problem for window phone is not only the app gap but also the lack of optimisation of apps by developers which kills the performance of the platform. It doesn't matter if the UI is perfectly smooth if you are waiting around all the time for apps to slowly load and then regularly reload.

At less than $100 it's really easy to recommend better Android phones over the 532.

  • How do I get the 5gb? Is there a SIM included?

    • +1

      Yes.

  • +2

don't see the point in buying a phone with such low specs, when for $69 you could get a 4G and more Ram phone such as Alcatel or Huawei from Auspost/Boost/kmart, etc… with phone prices dropping, there's no value in getting something like this

  • Being locked to Telstra, am I correct in assuming that post-paid Telstra sims will work in this too?

    • Yep

  • Just bought one.

  • Just bought two from my local. Only need it to text/make calls - seems like a handy little phone from initial usage. Time will tell I guess!!

    Thanks OP.

  • Finally got one thanks. Third times the charm

  • Just purchased 3, for the kids to play games on. :-)

  • Bought 2 for $48. Had $10 in EDR

  • Lucky me, also bought one this afternoon too. I am using it now and quite impressed with the speed.

  • I got one just for the giggles. Third attempt at these $29 offers. This was the first time it was actually in stock as advertised.

edit: windows mobile really is f*#@ked. After using iOS and Android, this thing is like learning Gaelic. It makes no sense. It's from another dimension. weird.

  • Bought one yesterday for my son's birthday. He wanted an iPod Touch to play games and listen to podcasts/internet radio. This is a fraction of the price and does the job just as well.

  • Damn all sold out at Big W & Woolworth's auburn, lol is there a item limit applied per customer, obviously broden is buying all the damn phones.

Any one who got their hands on one know if they are selling colored versions?

  • Telstra mobiles will only work with a Telstra SIM card, is this actually true and very specific , would Lyca Mobile work with this, or any other recommendable Carriers/

    • I can confirm that Boost Mobile works fine with Telstra locked phones

  • Which one would make a better DAP - Lumia 532 or Sony Xperia E (currently c $25 at DSE).
    Thanks

    • Sony Xperia E - more apps, eg, for flac files etc.
