  • How kogan can check the balance? Kogan needs dick internal system and database?
So maybe this is just flat $25 for every single gift card. Doesn't matter still have credit or not?

    • It is still possible to check the balance on-line.

    • +2

The links on the DS website (for the Gift Cards) were removed the other day, but here it is:
      https://www.dicksmithgiftcard.com.au/login.aspx?program=1005…

    • There are websites that will check card balances for you. We use one at my workplace to refund self-serve copy cards that are no longer in use.

  • +1

What happens if the administrator decides to start accepting the DS gift cards but you've already sent in your card to Kogan.

For that matter in that case Kogan would be sitting on a windfall of DS gift cards they could hand away to employees.

    • +18

Write down the card number and pin so you can still use it online if they ever become accepted again

      • +1

        That makes sense.

    • +3

What are the chances of that happening? Id say somewhere between winning lotto and priests coming clean.

      • +2

imo the chances of it happening are zero. not 0.001% - 0%.

Read the news of how DSE's books were cooked…
the private equity group made a KILLING and the which ever idiots bought their stock at $2 or even 75c got hosed.

        • +2

Except shareholders rank BEHIND unsecured creditors such as gift card holders.

        • +1

They've already had the bad PR. They wont all the sudden have a heart.

        • @Bargs: And from I've been reading here, DS has already sold most of their stock. So what exactly do people think DS (or whatever it becomes, if anything) will have to sell - to repay gift cards?

  • +1

My sources tell me that kogan is planning to make a bid on dick smith as a store front to there online store

    • No… we want cheap online stores!

      • Look on the bright side. When kogan start selling kogenloops, our eneloops will be worth gold .

we might even see them listed and traded as a precious metal next to gold, silver and platinum

BTW, my source looks to be right

        • hi easterculture I have $600 worth GCs … what happens now?? I'm worried

        • @iabdulhadi:

I have $600 worth GCs … what happens now?? I'm worried

What sort of question is this? You actually have $0 worth of DSE Gift Cards at the moment but you may cash one in for $25 of Kogan credit that may or may not be useful. It is very unlikely you will see more than a few cents in the dollar for these cards.

Why do you have $600 worth of cards?

        • +1

@iabdulhadi: How did you purchase them? If they were purchased on credit card then the purchaser should be ordering a chargeback from their bank.

If they were purchased with cash (or equivalent), then you can either split them up between all your family and friends and mail them in to Kogan, or you can see what, if anything, you get back from DSE.

        • +1

          @iabdulhadi:
if you purchases at coles, coles is offering to exchange for equal value in coles gift cards

Personally $25 at kogan isnt a very good deal.
If you purchased at safeway contact them about coles offer an they may reciprocate a refund too

        • @Maverick-au: to buy a phone mate!!

        • +1

          @iabdulhadi:

          to buy a phone mate!!

DSE has been in trouble for a while so buying their cards was pretty risky, did you have them for a while? If you purchased via credit card you may have some recourse there. Where did you purchase them?

        • @Maverick-au: ya Thanks for the info but I already sent it coles …so will get coles egiftcards

        not all of us

        We want click and collect

Kogan in a storefront thin stocked store would be great and quite economical to them.
It would look like an apple store show casing products and likely no actual stock kept. no storage, no cash, no logistics, no financial handling.

Come in see the show case , order in store (using the website and unique instore ID voucher) and the rest occurs online shipped as normal.

Kogan claims to have quality products but because i can't see them I haven't been willing to consider plopping $1000 on any of their self branded products.
        Seeing instore would change that

        • -1

Come in see the show case , order in store (using the website and unique instore ID voucher) and the rest occurs online shipped as normal.

How can he showcase stock that he often doesn't have?
How can he showcase stock that changes from shipment to shipment?

Kogan claims to have quality products but because i can't see them I haven't been willing to consider plopping $1000 on any of their self branded products.

Quality products? Are you kidding! He sells the cheapest rubbish that he stick a Kogan sticker on, he has no part in the quality, the design or the UI of any product and will buy whatever he can make a dollar on.

          Seeing instore would change that

So seeing a different product to the one that would be shipped to you would make you consider purchasing from him? What about the massive increase in prices to justify the rents, stock and staff which would push his prices to that of the big names like Sony and Panasonic. Which one would you buy? A Kogan or a Panasonic TV?

Hey do you know more about the back story on dse?

one thing I never understood from the reports was how/why woolies sold it for 115m - but the company was already holding (worth) 370m in assets?

      source:
      https://foragerfunds.com/bristlemouth/dick-smith-is-the-grea…

      • +1

Probably it had more debts than assets when WW group sold it

      • one thing I never understood from the reports was how/why woolies sold it for 115m - but the company was already holding (worth) 370m in assets?

Why din't you read the article, it goes into detail about this but there are liabilities, leases and rubbish inventory amongst others that reduced what it was worth.

        • the article didnt say anything about liabilities or leases - only the unverified comments.
and rubbish inventory is still worth something.

Whats amazing to me is that you dont even have to be a business major to see what was going on (which im not)

even a 5th grader could figure this out - how on earth did they get away with such blatant shenanigans?

        • Not only that, but when Dick Smith was refloated, they used an inflated forecasted profit to sell $115m for $520m.

Earlier last year I was very wary about JB Hifi's record profits at that time and their unsustainable forecasts which pushed up their share price between Jan-Jun 2015. I wouldn't be surprised to see a sharp return to their normal $10-$15 range if sales don't continue to improve.

    • Your sources are wrong…

    • +1

My sources say your sources are wrong.

    • Your sources are full of it.

Kogan just wants a look at the books and stock - he has no interest in actually buying the business/stores.

He will be bidding with JB and Gerry for the leftover stock.

    • Kogan would never open proper bricks and mortar - Why would his private label crap sell any better then Dick Smiths?
That, and selling bulk grey imports through bricks and mortar… too much liability.

  • Cudos to Kogan!

  • +9

I haven't received any DSE spam for days now…

Leaves me with more time to post comments on OzBargain!!!

    Win-Win for everyone!!!

No offence jv, but we are glad to get rid of one dick, please don't be the other.

I remember someone said that jv is a SHE.

    Good work Kogan

  • -1

It looks like Dick smith website is working, can't we use the DSE card there?

    • The DS website never stopped working, not sure why you thought otherwise.

      • I just checked.. No it doesnt work, after you add an item to shopping cart, you can't proceed

        • I was trying to edit but you replied too quick!

The answer to your question is, no you can't use it. Not online and not in store, been like this for several days now:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228792

You can proceed, just not with a GC. Only CC or PayPal, which is risky during this time.

I also went in a Melbourne store the other day and it was rejected, just like everyone else!

  • To my knowledge there is likely to be an opportunity for GC holders to buy goods at DS. Maybe not at $1 to $1 - but there will be some value to the GCs under all likelihoods. Kogan will benefit from publicity and also buy goods which can be resold.

    • what makes you say that?

  • +1

During the Christmas promotion, I bought a whole bunch of Big W gift cards, hope they won't go into voluntary administration.

    • +1

Woolworths is pretty safe. For now.

      • If the world turned upside down and woolies went broke you can be assured westfarmers will buy them out to pick up 80% market share

  • How does Kogan know if they are valid and how much value is remaining? Is there a website where you can check the value of a DSE gift card and is it still active?

This is a pretty smart ploy from Kogan, at worst they are down $25 but at best someone makes a large purchase that is actually profitable and surrenders a much higher value gift card that they end up recouping more than $25 from as an unsecured creditor.

  • +7

I've got a $25 Borders gift card, will they take them???

    • +4

Maybe you could send it in and see what happens?

If you do…you should post updates here!

  • +1

I have a DS gift card with $2.76 balance, should I keep it or send it to Kogan? :(

    • +2

      Send it to Ruslan.

      • +1

        Keep it for the memories.

        • Maybe it will be a collectors item in 20 years :-P

  • -2

should just exchange them with a roll of toilet paper, wont hurt so much then

    • +1

It may still hurt, if the toilet paper is rough

  • Just make sure you send it with registered mail. I would not trust them too much.

  • -3

A $0 value DSE gift card is still worth more than a $25 Kogan gift card.

    • +1

      any need for this comment???

      • Well, it made me laugh. (Bought a branded phone from him, but I wouldn't touch his own brand products.)

  • God On Kogan :) The whole DSE Gift card thing freaked me out so I spent my JB-HI voucher today, just in case lol

    • Wouldn't they be getting more business now?

  • -1

Kogan could, write those collected giftcards against their tax. I'm sure they will get a lot more out of it than your worthless DSE cards.
By all means, use them up and shop online DSE; find more un-purchased cards from various stores and send time in for $25 each. Both you and Kogan will benefit! everyone happy!

  • So, to clarify… You will only get a maximum of $25 in Kogan credit? And if you send them a $200 DSE gift card, they won't send you anymore than $25 in Kogan credit? If this is the case, if you have $25 or less in DSE credit, this is a great deal. Any more than that, you might as well hold on to your DSE credit and hope that things improve for DSE (which may lead to DSE gift cards being accepted again?)

    • i think that is. you can call and ask. they have australia call centre (kogan).
well its a gamble. you get $25 now, or maybe $200 later, or $0 later

      • +1

        Well, I would've already lost $175…

I think I would rather take the gamble, and potentially miss out on the $25, than go with Kogan straight up and automatically lose $175 before things have even had a chance to play out.

People are going to be kicking themselves if they take part in this deal, and then DSE recovers (unlikely, I know, but still…). But, like I said before, it depends how much credit they originally bought. If they bought $25 or less in DSE credit, then they would benefit from the Kogan deal. If they bought more (or much, much more), then the Kogan deal is risky.

        • i feel you man, its so unfair someone still selling something which they know it will be worthless in just days.

        • Just to clarify, I don't actually have a $200 DSE gift card (thank god!). My query was just hypothetical!

I'm too paranoid to buy single retailer gift cards, I only ever get the ones for the Coles group, or the Woolworths group, which can be used at loads of partner retailers.

    • More than $25. Because IF people get anything back, they might get what, 5 cents in the dollar? So if you guessed 5 cents, then up to say, a $125 gift card would still be 'worth' cashing in. (I say 'worth' because it depends what you plan to buy from K with it.)

      • +1

I think your maths is wrong.

$125 at 5 cents in the dollar is only $6.25.

  • +3

Give one dodgy gift card and get another one like it

    • +1

Then receive dodgy product after using said dodgy replacement card

  • +1

Whats the catch? I mean this is Kogan after all….

    • +7

The catch is you get a Kogan gift card.

    • After you send in your DSE gift card they'll wait for 3 months and then tell you that the Kogan gift cards are out of stock.

  • too good of them. thanks

  • +1

So if ppl have a dose gift card worth $100, they still just gonna get $25. I guess it's better than nothing at all. There's chance someone might revive dse though.

    • woops.

  • Wish I had some old used cards lying around :D

    • If they are used then they aren't valid for this deal.

  • +1

Wow, DSE is going down…I stumbled across this interesting blog describing how things went down since Woolworths sold them off, check it out:

    http://www.gemcapital.com.au/blog/item/603-dick-smith-is-the…

  • Sounds like DSE is playing a part in this. This would be a good way for them to remove potential claims down the track. NSW Fair Trading has said watch this space regarding potentially getting your money back at a later date - http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2016-01-06/knight-dick-smith-a…

  • +1

Brilliant Kogan, brilliant! People believing Kogan actually cares - wake up :). Just a smart marketing ploy.

    • +1

I really don`t think Kogan gives a ###, it is just any other private company. I think Kogan is collecting the DS GCs and then use them to negotiate the acquisition

      • You can't use Dick Smith gift cards to buy Dick Smith. See the exclusions ;)

cannot be used to directly or indirectly acquire Dick Smith Electronics, whether in distress or not…

  • Trade in your potentially worthless DSE card for an effectively worthless Kogan card?
I think I'd rather hold out in the hope that DSE cards are honoured to a certain percentage value.

  • +2

Moral of the story: don't buy gift cards

  • +4

Coles will now refund DS gift cards purchased through them.
    http://www.smh.com.au/business/retail/coles-to-exchange-dick…

    • Beat me to it by 54 seconds!

  • +5

If you bought your cards from Coles, they're offering Coles Gift Cards in exchange. TBH I would've thought that Coles would still be liable for a refund under Aussie law, but odds are you'll use a Coles GC anyway…
    http://www.smh.com.au/business/retail/coles-to-exchange-dick…

  • -2

Do you think they will check the balance?

Worth the price of a stamp [now $1 :(] to find out with my still in date but used gift card?

    • Of course they will check the balance - that is why they want you to send them to head office.
Why would you try to take advantage of their generosity :-(

    • For anybody who doesn't know how much money they have left, they can check here

  • There are now better options out there as per comments above

    • Not if you have a $4 balance on the gift card, like me.

  • Now Mwave are doing similar to Koge's ($20 credit)
    http://www.mwave.com.au/blog/2016/1/8/trade-in-your-useless-…

  • Nice move Kogan. Makes him seem like Mr Nice Guy by giving $25 credit using DSE's misfortune and disgruntled DSE customers as the way to do it. Good marketing move. He won't give a crap about the gift cards, nor if they only have 1 cent credit on them, it's worth it to get potential new customers and guaranteed sales (or little to no cost to Kogan if there is no sale)

  • Dicks going down :o

  • received my voucher via email, thanks
