    • I didn't notice any of the city convenience stores of the small shops map - did u guys get $10 cashback on them?

And the surcharge these places are charging have to be more than the cost they are incurring. I went to same shop (the Ezymart on 300 George st) and one guy charged me $1 surcharge. And when I went there on another day, another guy charged me $2 surcharge. I was tempted to walk out and tell them they won't get my business

      • +1

I was tempted to walk out and tell them they won't get my business

You should have! And then you report them on takeamex.com.au

  • Just top up myki at The summit, friendly Lady and she even asked how many credit cards I need, will charge $1 if more than 2 cards. Received confirmation emails on the spot

  • Sorry i couldn't help myself but asking the age old question. doe all the ezymarts and city convenience stores count towards 1 shop or individual shops for the shop small purpose? anyone has experience? much appreciated. cheers.

    • Separate, I've received email confirmation for separate stores

    • Check on the receipt. It's usually <random business name> Pty Ltd or something, which is a telltale sign that it's an independent franchisee, and not a master franchise biller, and you can use across multiple stores.

  • City Convenience Hunter St
    19-21 Hunter St

Topped up my Opal card at the Lucky Charm at Westfield Sydney and got the qualifying e-mail. Guy served me cottoned on to what I was doing when I told him the $2 surcharge was fine and he saw my AMEX ahahaha; was asking what the promotion this time was.

  • World Square Newsagency refused to loan $20 onto Opal. Minimum was $50.

$1 surcharge, though i believe he's going to charge $2 going forward as the guy across the street is charging $2 surcharge

    289-295 Sussex St
    Millenium Convienence Store
    $1 surcharge

    1/379-383 Pitt St
    City Conv store

    • i wonder why world sq is listed in the not working table? $50 top up is fine! you would add it later anyway

      • +1

        Forgot to mention that.

        I dropped by.

It was $50 top up, with 3% surcharge.

        I walked out.

I have no issue with them charging the 3%, that's what AMEX charges them.

I just didn't want to outlay 50… and I'm finding this run around a fun lunch time hunt

        • I walk out from Wold Square News Agency as well. By the way, if the Merchant signed up for the shop small promotion, Amex is giving them a very good Merchant rate, I think is under 1.5% (cannot remember the exact percentage, is not 3%.

        • @Purple:

          How do you know this?

It feels like AMEX did some smart marketing in signing them up… but they werent fully across the cost.

I've came some very adamant owners who said just no AMEX.

If it wasn't costing them, they'd be all for it, 50c covers a 1.5% surcahrge on a $20

        • My dentist registered with Shop Small, She told me the rate last year, that is why I am aware of it. I remembered when I heard of the merchant rate for shop small promotion, I was so surprised because it was a very attractive rate.

        • oh i didn't see the 3% surcharge. have you contacted amex? so many dodgies around!

        • @Purple:

          Someone just replied re this

SydneySwan 2 hours 57 min ago new

I was charged $1 today and I recharged OPAL using 3 cards. My son has a friend who works there and he confirms that the Amex surcharge is 5%.

        • +1

That is incorrect. Amex NEVER charge 5% for surcharge. Never.

        • +1

Baghern, see the link below: The average merchant service fee charged by American Express Australia Ltd for the period 1 April 2016 to 30 June 2016 was 1.66%. But if the merchant sign up for Amex shop small promotion, Amex will charge lower than 1.66% to encourage merchant to participate in programme.

          https://www.americanexpress.com/au/merchant/doing-business-w…

        • @Purple:

hehe average, that's not an real figure, I wouldnt trust that kind of data from the actual company.

If that were clearly true they wouldnt be able to offer us all these discounts and points

    • 614 George St
      City Conv store

      Any surcharge?

      • $2 - its across the road from 525 George St CCs

      • $2 surcharge for me

    • got the email and credit from Millenium Convienence Store?

    • did you get the email and credit for 1/525 George St?

      • I didn't get an email from that one either. Even though I know there was a surcharge, the person at the counter didn't mention anything or even let me see the terminal and only gave me the opal receipt so it only looked like a $20 transaction.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't advise people to go there.

        • yeah unfortunately many people advised they don't get any email or the credit from that store..
          it's a loss

        • @hendyb: yeah, just trying to let other people know so they don't fall for it too.

    24 erskine st $1
    20 king $1
    289 sussex $1
World news agency,L2 Darling harbor shopping center $1

Successful opal recharges at 9 merchants in 2 days. 1 more to go

    • Are these all confirmed with emails?

      • +2

they are all on the Map.. I did receive emails for most of them.

For example, I received email for 20 King St using my Primary card, but not for supplementary.

Also, As you can see from comments above, transactions via PayPass may not generate an email.

As long as the merchant is on the map, shouldn't be an issue.

        • Must because PIN transactions are instant while PayPass takes longer to process.

I don't know why many of the successful merchants are not on the Amex map.

    • Are you sure with those surcharges? 19-21 Hunter & 1 Castlereagh seem to be lower than others.

      • +1

        Yes, I am.
Surcharges are purely based on luck.

In the past, I was charged $2 by few merchants on my first visit, and on my second I was only charged $1.

        • Cool, thanks for the updates.

      • 19-21 Hunter has a sign up now stating they aren't doing OPAL topups.

    • 24 erskine st? is that a convenience store??

      • Darling Harbour View Convenience 24-26A Erskine Street

      300 george $1.5

      • Did you get the $10 credits at the same time? I've noticed that I'm missing a couple of credits for some of my cards. Maybe they just haven't gone through yet…

      • 19-21 Hunter has a sign up now stating they aren't doing OPAL topups.

    • Just visited World Newsagency and they charged 50c, got lucky I guess. The girl working said "you still have a lot of balance on your Opal", ha!

      • Hi Dramiante, which World Newsagency did you go for the recharge? Harbour Side or the one at George Street?

        • The one at Harbourside. Hoping that's the correct one, i havent seen an email yet but I paid with Paypass.

      • i just tried this one. lady said they don't accept AMEX for opal topups. i guess it depends who is manning the store

  • +2

I am just wondering if it is legal those shops charge $2 or even $5 surcharge on Amex?

    • +1

Frankly I'm bemused that any stores accept AMEX.

      3% fee, that's friggin huge.

I paid a bill recently with AMEX $1400, was surprised when they said yes to AMEX, no surcharge mentioned. Paid for it, with some guilt that they were charged $42

      • PayPal similarly takes a mean 2.4% + 30c cut

      • Don't be guilty, larger merchants may get discounts on amex merchant fees

        • +1

          small business.

  • +1

Was asked for $3 surcharge at 770 George street today. When I double checked, "$3 for a $20 Opal recharge? Really?". The shop assistant said "Yes, American Express AT LEAST $3 surcharge. Going by percentages, that's a 15% surcharge!

    • +2

I think the earlier you go, the more likely you will get a lower surcharge. Topping up so many opal cards in one day can get tedious… The guy at 19-21 Hunter st progressively went from $1 to $2 to $3 as the day went on based on previous posts. And at the end of the day when I went in, apparently the "system was down", which is obviously BS but I get it - topping up opal cards all day is not fun

      • That would be interesting to see the thought behind as I assume its the owner working.

This isn't an occupation where you reject money - surcharge. It looks like it takes just under a minute to do two transactions, even with pin typing.

Other than lunch Conv stores are rarely busy.

When i did it at lunch I had at most 1-2 people behind me, not a chain

  • +2

    Other ones:
Oxford St Newsagency - 50c surcharge
    Connaught Newsagency - 50c surcharge
    888 Wholly Tobacconist (Oxford Square shopping mall) - 1% = 20c surcharge
The Lucky charm (Pavilion Centre) - $2 surcharge
    770 George St - $3 surcharge

I got confirmation emails from AMEX for all except "Oxford Street Newsagency". For some, I've already received the $10 credit too.

    • +3

Good pickup on the 1% at 888 Wholly Tobacconist. Their receipt is 888 Wholly Tobacconist but the shop front name is 'King of the Pack', just incase you're going in circles like I was.

      In summary for the area:
1% @ 888 Wholly Tobacconist King of the Pack 63 Oxford
      $0.50 @ Connaught Newsagency 189 Liverpool
      $0.50 @ Oxford St Newsagency 18-32 Oxford
      $0.50 @ Wu's Pharmacy 629 George

      • Haha nice, that would of fked me up

  • +2

I can also confirm that The Lucky Charm @ 22/201 Elizabeth St has closed down.

  • +16

Ozbargainers, please walk out if they want to charge more than $1. They obviously think if more than half accept $2 surcharge they are in the money. Prove them wrong by walking out.

Do not encourage them to lift up their surcharge and rip us off. The CBD is full of convenience stores just walk another 50m and find another one.

    • I totally agreed with Sharp. Please walk out if they wanted to charge more than $1. We are the card members of Amex and we pay the annual fee. Those merchants have been very dishonest and greedy, we should not support their behaviour. Please work together as a team to boycott those greedy merchants!

    • I walked out on the 770 George st store when he asked $3 surcharge. I did pay $2 at the lucky charm in pavilion. They had what looked like an old-ish sticker on their counter saying $1 surcharge for credit cards and $2 surcharge for amex and international cards. So it did appear that they always charged $2 for amex.

      • I paid $1 at Pavilion but I think I've been the only one to do so thanks to the distraction that was the Shop Small crew …

  • Anyone know where to top up a NSW Opal in Canberra on Amex?

  • +1

Can confirm that both Neutral Bay News at 6 Young St and Neutral Bay Wycombe at 167 Wycombe Road charge $1 OPAL top-up. Neither allowed paywave so you need your PIN and I even had to sign for one but they never checked signature. Emails received immediately from both shops.

    • Cheers will buy at Neutral Bay News :)

Grocery Zone 1/44 Park St Sydney $1
City Convenience (T&Sons) 1/419 Pitt St Sydney $1

      • Did u get email for 27 park.
It has a different name on the map.

        • I don't care about emails. I always get my cashback.

        • @Sharp: even I don't care. the reason why I asked you in this case is. thought the address is same, merchant name wasn't matching. Hence, i didn't risk.

      • You got cashback for all 3?

I can't find them on Amex search

        • So far only got it from t&n sons pitt st. too early for the other two. Probably tomorrow. Will update tomorrow.

        • @Sharp: confirming cashback received from all three
