  • Thanks! Will have to check map, but have registered 4 x Amex cards so will see how I go maximizing the rebates!

Anyone found any other places around Sydney for 'everyday' spending? Cincotta Chemist in Sydney seems to be on the list …

I'm interested in hearing about other similar places, eg Fuel, but not opal top ups.

    • There are heaps of chemists on list. Is Cincotta Chemist any different in terms of what they sell?

      • Cincotta is reasonably priced and will price match chemist warehouse/woolworths/coles easily, so its a good option for everyday items on shop small.

For prescription drugs above the PBS threshold it probably doesn't make a difference.

  • thanks for the manual link

    • -4

Your 'thanks' must be appreciated but it's late by at least 670 upvotes if not more.

  • Back to 10 retailers!,.,.,?
Awesome, I'm out of town right now, but can someone find the post from about a year back, with my myki map on it?
I'd do it but I'm on my iPad. I'd love to top another 200 up for only 100,…..

    • It's all in the wiki linked in the description.

      Map.

      • Don't quote me, but I don't think that one is my map.
        Also, all X regardless :(

        • That's the most recent map for Myki based on the shop small event in September. There are 7 places confirmed by members which take Amex for Myki recharges, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/amex_shop_small_guide#myki…. Unfortunately, when these offers happen retailers ban or surcharge Amex transactions for Myki (e.g. Amcal Chemist in Carlton banned Amex for Myki with a sign).

        • @neil: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215492

So none of those ( bottom ) any use anymore? :(

Totally: reasonable to use a newer map, sad to see so many X tho.

Are any in the CBD usable at all? Is my map useless?

        • @hamwhisperer:

I wouldn't even rely on the most recent map. You have 30 days to get the credit so it's best we start again so we can confirm for sure if they places still take AMEX for recharges. Myki has a map of retailers so I'd use that and go from there. I'd go through the September list, then last years. Crowdsourcing :)

I'll create a new map to maybe ✓ in yellow for September confirmation, ✓ in green for November confirmation, and maybe remove the x's until we have confirmation again that they don't work. Hopefully, others will keep the wiki updated so we can have a updated data source.

  • Damn me for not reading the T&C. It doesn't actually start until Nov 1, but I made a ton of purchases already. :/

I'm used to the offer being open when registration is open.

  • Any business owners in ACT that is part of the small shop, and have some amex cards message me.
I'd like to have a quick question.

  • Anyone have issues registering their NAB Platinum Amex card? My card went through however my wife's card which is on a separate account is unable to enrol with an error message "Unfortunately, this card is not eligible for this offer"

    • mine and my wife's went through fine.

      edit: same account though.

  • I was unable to register a supp card on my bank-issued card last week :(

Have IGA's been excluded from shop small this year?

    • +1

Looks like it. And petrol stations apparently.

There is a few Foodworks on the list.

      • +1

that's quite disappointing. the absence of these stores really undermines the value of the promotion, at least for me (was looking to stock up on Halo Top ice cream and other IGA-exclusive goodies!)

        • There may be some prospect of some stores that aren't listed still working? I might try buy $20 of fuel at the servo that was listed last year and see what happens.

        • Any luck with trying Amex at the servos? Was hoping to use the credit on petrol this year as well.

  • Is there only 2 dining places? Im only seeing 2

  • NQR if off the list, so is a local fruit market. Rather disappointing this time, just eateries are on the list…

    • Guess I'm getting takeout tonight, and then stocking up at the butcher tomorrow.

Just put $20 on my Opal card at Nextra in Westfield Chatswood. Last time I topped up there as part of Shop Small September I got charged $1 surcharge; this time I got charged $0.50. Also got the qualifying e-mail. One down, nine to go!

    • Nextra Chatswood charged $1 yesterday

    • I was charged $1 today and I recharged OPAL using 3 cards. My son has a friend who works there and he confirms that the Amex surcharge is 5%.

  • Just spent the money but I don't receive any confirmation email from Amex, does anyone get the same problem?

    • Sometimes it's immediate sometimes it's a day or two later

    • +2

I find if you use the chip instead of tap and go its instant.

I can confirm that this is the case as I've used nine retailers in the Sydney CBD and got the email while I was still in store.

      • I agree with this observation based on my personal experiences.

      • thanks for the information. I tapped the card, that's why.

  • +2

Ezymart 58 Pitt Street is charging $1.50 for Opal top ups.
Ezymart 300 George St with $2 surcharge.

Got the confirmation emails for both instantly.

    • got charged $2 at 58 Pitt street.

      • Can confirm that 58 Pitt Street has increased AMEX surcharge to $2.00

    • Did u use the same cards for 2 ezymart stores ? Was wondering if they were counted as one shop or it's separate

      • They are separate stores, so can go to multiple locations.

    More Opal top-ups:

Oxford St Newsagency you can get away with paying no surcharge if you buy a Redskin or Milko for 25 cents with your top-up.
Connaught Newsagency on Liverpool St charge 50 cents surcharge.
The Lucky Charm Pavilion (opposite Citisuper) charge $1 surcharge. Also happened to run into four Shop Small reps there advising the shopkeeper about Shop Small and giving out advertising material and pens. So I flashed my AMEX at them and asked for a pen too xD
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/lxs2hc0r9j3sawf/IMAG1081.jpg?dl=0

    • +1

Nice pen. Looks like you were on the train… travelling effectively half price after topping up Opal card??

      • Pretty much 😏 My weekly Opal usage is between $35-$40 a week so trying to make the most of Shop Small by using the majority of them on Opal top-ups :)

        • Yeah, you might as well! Do you have more than one card? That hadn't occurred to me to do that, but the professional ozbargainers on here are all about that!

        • @snapper: Nope, just one primary AMEX. I could take out a supplementary card but dunno whose name to use ahahaha (unless I put initial surname since my primary one is first name surname)

  • +3

I found the pavilion charges $2 and they also pointed to their sign stuck on the counter. So far can confirm Wus Pharmacy still $0.50; B&J at 187 Thomas St is $1; EzyMart at 11 Rawson Pl is $1.50

    • That sucks. In my case, they were probably distracted by the Shop Small crew when I did my top-up …

      • +1

Perhaps. EzyMart 770 George charges $2 instead of $1 as per the map (or I was unlucky there, as well)
Confirmed Connaught & Oxford still $0.50

        • You didn't buy a Redskin or Milko at Oxford St Newsagency? You save 25 cents and get a Redskin or Milko!

        • +2

          @kerfuffle:
I was distracted (read: in awe) by the guy in front of me who had around 6 AMEX cards with a number of Opal cards. I only got my Amex last week so I was clearly the newb in the store.

        • +2

@ajamedor: Yeah, we have a few members on here with multiple cards (Turd for example has nine cards). Last time there was Shop Small, I bought a pack of Werther's Original. Next time my friend! :)

          P. S. If you like Art and Design books, head down to Beautiful Pages at 114 Oxford St; they're also participating in Shop Small and have excellent customer service

        • +7

          @kerfuffle:
So this is my confirmed run for the day:

          629 George - $0.50
          187 Liverpool - $0.50
          18-32 Oxford - $0.50
          300 George - $1.00
          187 Thomas - $1.00
          169 Phillip - $1.00
          58 Pitt - $1.50
          23 Rawson - $1.50
          770 George - $2.00

Felt like I was playing Ingress all over again but much more satisfying when you know you're getting cash back!

Can someone verify that 14 Carrington & 201 Elizabeth are closed down? Or was I looking in the wrong area?

        • @ajamedor: Ooh thanks for your breakdown! I have five uses left so your list of locations is very handy; kudos!

        • +1

@ajamedor: Can verify that 14 Carrington is indeed closed down. Went there today.

        • Just FYI, I went to 770 George today and the guy charged $3. I almost walked out but $7 free Opal credit is better than $0 free Opal credit. His machine also screwed up and there are now triplicate charges on my Amex account, but I'm not sure whether or not they'll end up going through. Will be disputing if they do…

        • Could you please confirm if you got email/when you get credit from 169 Phillip? Doesn't seem to be on the map.

        • +1

          @luker9001:
I have problems receiving email confirmation but I can confirm I have the $10 credit already in my account.
169 Phillip is Society Convenience Store

FYI Every location I've listed above I now have been credited.

    • Rawson Pl wanted to charge $2 during the last shop small weekend.

      • I went there today, the guy charged $1

    • I went to Rawson Pl at lunch time he wanted $2. the same guy did not charge me any fee on Monday. I didn't recharge obviously. Some people must accept $2 surcharge so they can lift up the fee like that.

Similarly 770 George St charged me $1 on Monday today he asked $2. I didn't recharge there either.

Kudos to Wu Pharmacy, Connought Newsagency and Oxford St Newsagency. They never increased their 50c surcharge.

    • Can't locate WU Pharmacy in Shop Small Map. Did you guys get the email confirmation after doing the Opal topup? Thanks

      • +1

I just went there, confirmed with email.

  • Does anybody know if Android Pay transactions work?

    • worked for me this morning. Got the confirmation email straight away.

    • It's the same as spending on your actual physical card, for all intents and purposes.

  • +2

NSW Convenience Store on Macquarie St in Parramatta charge $1 surcharge for a $20 Opal top-up.

Five down, five to go! (Got e-mails for all except Oxford St Newsagency as I tapped there but they have the Shop Small sign up so should be all good)

    • Is opal top up the sole purpose for you shopsmall visit !?!

      • +1

Majority of them, yes. I also plan to eat at Ippudo in the city during my break at work and hopefully pick up something at Beautiful Pages.

  • did anyone get their confirmation emails today? I had two transactions, no emails

    • Got four for five transactions. Did you tap or insert?

    • Nope, 1 transaction at a Thai place that worked last time, no email

    • Just got mine!

    • Got mine too.

  • my transactions are showing up on amex online. in the past, I always got emails from these merchants

    📍 Updated Opal Map 📍

Keep the comments rolling as retailers often change surcharges during these campaigns.

    • Does this all work?
I'm really confused when I checked the Amex's map and I couldn't see all the above retailers in the map?
If it all works, it's great especially with this list and the custom google map!

    • +1

Update for Darling Park Newsagency (201 Sussex): $0.40 surcharge.
And that's all my recharges done!

      • did you get the trans confirmation email from Amex after that?

    • +1

Confirmed Oxford St Newsagency and Connaught newsagency (Liverpool St). Both shops had the Amex shop small (Nov) sign up - and I did Opal top-ups for 0.50 surcharge. The transaction for Connaught came through immediately and got the email but haven't got anything yet for xford St Newsagency.

      Thanks for posting this table!!

      • I haven't gotten anything for Oxford St Newsagency either and I did mine yesterday!

    • +2

Please add EzyMart 52 Martin Place (entrance from side street) on the list, got email for PIN transactions and not for PayPass.

Also, they only allow 1 card per person now with $1 surcharge

    • Wiki & Map updated as of 2:45PM.

    • +1

Easy Mart on 18 Smith Street, parramatta also does opal top up, for a whopping $3 surcharge!!!

      • They don't do opal top up anymore

        • For $3, don't care. No one should be doing it for $3 let alone $2.

    • Paid $1 surcharge at Neutral Bay newsagent earlier this week. Same as back in the September Shop Small

  • 58 Phillip St now $2 surcharge

Also could we add 21 Hunter St City Convenience, also $2 surchage

    • Which convenience store at 58 Phillip St?

      • My bad,58 Pitt St

        • The problem with no proper signage, each staff member/shop can set a price. I only got charged $1.50 yesterday. Other retailers will probably catch on and up their prices too :\

  • +3

City convenience 1 castlereagh st - $2 surcharge
City convenience 19 hunter st - guy is greedy asking for $2.50 surcharge because I'm getting $10 back - I said won't do it here.
EzyMart 58 Pitt st - $2 surcharge from today onwards

    • +1

ohh I just see this post.

City convenience 19 hunter st, I saw on the counter it said $1 surcharge for Credit Card so I give it a go for $40 topup.
After I topup, he told me to pay $22 per card. I asked why then he said it's Amex.

      RIP OFF!!!!

      • +6

I have reported him to AmEx as he is breaching his T&C - which says - no active discouragement of using amex by charging hefty surcharges.

      • Did you write that correctly? $22 surcharge or $2?

        • oops, my mistake

I mean I have 2 Amex cards so I top up $40 then end up paid $22 * 2 cards.

      • Not sure if this applies:
        https://www.canstar.com.au/credit-cards/the-end-of-excessive…

Considering a $20 top up with a $2 surcharge is 10%, we happily accept it because of the discount but if it isn't a typo and actually $22, surely the ACCC could intervene?

    • That's very unethical

    • Crappy City Convenience store that same night at 19 Hunter St poorly lied that the system was "down", so no Opal Amex possible…
Does anyone know if I can report this poor behavior to Amex?

Shopkeeper should've just admitted he didn't want to process my transaction instead of cowardly lieing.

      • It's possible they ran out of credit with the ePay system
