    • I've been trying to go through the backlog and am almost through everything but the table below is what I got for Opal. It should mirror the wiki and Google Maps.
    • As for Myki, tested at Demartes Amcal and was rejected again. Zouki accepted and had someone in front of me with $640 already loaded on their Myki card, the most the staff had seen.
    • For Melbourne, I've been buying Koko Black gift cards as each location is on the list and you can use the gift cards in any of the stores. Also used it at BAS Foods which is great for buying groceries.

Opal Table as of 4:30PM (Some info is missing as I'm a few comments behind).

    • Darn, wish I had known earlier that each location of Koko Black could be a separate transaction.

News New Newsagency are listed as News Newsagent on the Westfield website and as News Newsagency on the Shop Small map. All have the same phone number. They didn't accept AmEx for Opal when I asked.

  • As we come to a close on this deal, how did everyone go?

I only made it to a few places with my two cards. The local liquor store (Grant's scotch for $25) and today at Auto one halving the price of spark plugs and oil filter. Also got to one of the many pharmacy options available. Nearly forgot about IGA, that was handy.

I would have liked to try the dentist. I wondered if this would work. Pay for it on my amex then get it all refunded by my health insurer plus get $10 back.

    • used all my 6 cards for opal top ups.

$1200 worth of opal credit for $600.
got all surcharges refunded as well.

      • How to get refunds on the surcharges

        • you must be lucky, I emailed them

        • @spk: You emailed AMEX? For AMEX issued AMEXs only?

        • +1

          @feihong: yes
not sure if amex issued only

        • @spk: are all of your AMEXs AMEX issued? Because usually AMEX customer service only responds to AMEX issued AMEXs.. However if your bank issued AMEXs also got surcharge refunded then that's definitely a super great news!!

        • +1

@feihong: mine are all AMEX issued

        • @spk: thanks for the info! I will give it a go too!

      • Wow nice one.. what exactly did you say to get the surcharges refunded?!

        • This. When I phoned them, AMEX offered a $10 credit to compensate, and AmexConnect offered nothing. Maybe I'll try emailing too.

        • @solar: so what did you say to get the refund? Surcharge gouging?

  • +7

On my last Shop Small purchase for the day, I put my thumb over the Amex logo and dodged a 3% surcharge that I would have copped otherwise. Great tip from someone here at OzB :D

  • Managed to buy some gift cards at newsagency and also Amcal gift card at Amcal

    • I did not realise Amcal has gift cards. How long are their expiry? Thanks.

      • +1

        12 months

        • Can you use them for online and in-store amcal purchases? I did try google, and checked their website but there is scant info on this.

        • +1

@bluesky: I just logged into my Amcal online account and cannot see gift card as a payment option, so the gift card must be for in-store purchase only.

        • @feihong: That sounds right - don't remember being able to pay with giftcard and I usually buy online. Hey, thanks for checking this. Cheers.

    • What kind of gift cards at the newsagency, if you're willing to share?

      • +1

The black $100 Perfect gift card :D

        • Wow the most useful gift card I've seen sold at a "small" store was like a Myer gift card.. that's pretty damn good..!!!

  • My Melbourne haul:

    • Myki Top-Up
      1. ZOUKI CONVENIENCE
      2. LUCKY DAY TATTS
      3. YE MAO PTY LTD
      4. GERTRUDE ST MINI MART
    • Places to Eat
      1. STEER BAR AND GRILL (Got a $60 birthday voucher + split bill between 2 Amex cards)
      2. KOKO BLACK (Bought a $40 gift card split between 2 cards) x multiple locations
      3. 400 GRADI CICCHETTI (Bought a $40 gift card split between 2 cards)
      4. B East (Don't do gift cards)
      5. DENIS THE MENANCE
    • Groceries
      1. BASFOODS (Love this place)
  • Another successful season. $600 in shop small credits; mostly on alcohol, cafes and a newsagent. $700 from the Harvey Norman deal. $15 from BWS. $10 so far, but another $30 to go for the mobile wallet deal.

Over $1300 in statement credits in one month.

    • add: Over $2600 or more ($3000+) amex Spending in one month.

      • Yeah. The HN deal was spend $300 get $100 back. That was $2180 spent there, less $200 manufacturer cashback. At least $1300 spent on shop small. Still $2000+ spent out of my pocket. I would have been better off not spending at all, but then I wouldn't have a new fridge and enough alcohol to last 2 years.

My 3rd time saying final update.. this is really final. In fact I said last update last time because I knew by the time I posted this it would be too late for anything/anyone to act on any of the info. I'm going to include it anyway for the sake of completeness. This might also help with the next Shop Small event.

Wu's Pharmacy on George Street was smooth again
    Surcharge: $0.50
    Merchant name: WU PHARMACY
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 614 George Street was smooth/easy
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: 614 CCS GEORGE PTY LTD
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

Convenience Store 368 Sussex St said Opal machine wasn't working tonight and last night

Millenium Convenience Store (corner Bathurst St & Sussex St)
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant name: MILLENIUM CONVIENENCE STORE
Email: No (my first transaction at the store for which I did not receive an email - slight concern!)
    Paypass: Yes

    Fastway 4/27 Park Street
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: DARLING HARBOUR MIMI MART PTY
Email: No (my first transaction at the store for which I did not receive an email - slight concern!)
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 3/209 Castlereagh Street said no Opal top ups at all (whether cash or card). This was mentioned once before.

Grocery Zone 44 Park Street said cash only for opal top ups. Tried "bargaining" by offering to pay a surcharge but he wouldn't budge

City Convenience 60 Park Street this place has not been mentioned here at all. The guy was friendly enough and this place is part of Shop Small. Was told cash only unless you buy something. I bought 2x $2 Optus SIMs to go with my 2 top ups on 2 cards.
Surcharge: Technically $0 but requires you to buy something.
    Merchant name: CITY CONVENIENCE ELIZABETH
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 136 Castlereagh Street was smooth and is the only place I found throughout the whole entire month that did not surcharge an AMEX top up! I was extremely surprised but I can also see that the only other time this branch was brought up was by me in one of my last updates.
    Surcharge: $0
Merchant name: CCS 136 CASTLEREAGH PTY LTD
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Yes

St Martin's Newsagency near corner Market St/York St worked fine. Someone mentioned that the ones with the cheaper surcharge (which would include this one, with a $0.90 surcharge) were nicer. I actually found that this guy was the least polite of all. What surprised me more was he was Caucasian (sorry to stereotype but they're usually more chilled out). He seemed more uptight, and insisted on opening up my opal card (was still in its paper packaging as it was "new") even though I told him he didn't need to open it to top up.
    Surcharge: $0.90
Merchant name: ST MARTIN'S CITY NEWSAGENCY
    Email: Yes
    Paypass: Not for AMEX

City Convenience 419 Pitt St wanted a $2 surcharge again.

    Learnings:

    • Always check the official map if in doubt. Props to thydzik for his awesome map and this is no fault of his, but because places do get removed/added throughout the month there is always the chance that something has been included on his map which is no longer valid.
    • Ensure you check the amount to be debited if they paypass for you - I had one guy (at Mirna Convenience Store) who tapped $42 for me when I said "I want to pay $40 on two different cards". I'm not entirely blaming him as I can understand the potential for confusion, but I'm just reminding you to make sure you check to prevent this from happening!
    • Despite my first point being "follow your own map", definitely use Ozbargain as a point of reference. Definitely helpful, especially the comments section. If something is mentioned just once, I understand the potential for apprehension but if it's been mentioned 5 times, do take it somewhat seriously
    • Of course things may change, which is why at the end of the day you should still check the official map
    • Take note of those transactions which did not trigger an email and be prepared to email/message/call your bank for the credit.
    • Use spreadsheets to track - particularly useful if you have multiple cards
    • The Ozbargain wiki and Ozbargain maintained map are just reference points - you can find/discover new shops yourself. If whoever maintains it has no time to update it, it may be outdated. Good example was City Convenience 525 George St which has remained on both the Ozbargain maintained map and the wiki - despite numerous reports of people not getting credits over the last few weeks.
    • Check the official map!
    • If the place surcharges $1+, report the bloody mofos on takeamex.com.au. I can accept them wanting to take a cut of the profit (that's basically what we're doing right?) but if they're charging a 10% surcharges, that's just ridiculous. Of course there'll always be people willing to pay it, but lets try and discourage this behaviour. Takeamex.com.au is one of the simplest forms to fill in.
    • Not getting emails confirming your purchase is not the be all and end all but you can use it as an indicator - be prepared to get in contact with AMEX to manually ask for the credit if the purchase doesn't come through
    • There are heaps of restaurants in so many suburbs that are on the list. Spend a bit of time finding these and you could potentially find a hidden gem in your neighbourhood
    • Call up first to check if they accept AMEX - some (many) places on the list don't accept AMEX, have a fairly high min spend with AMEX, or don't allow split bills (or potentially a combination of these constraints). Call up to save yourself the hassle/disappointment upon payment.
    • The official map - yes it still sucks. But it's the official map and you would expect it to be the most accurate. Keep in mind how the search function works. e.g. If you're looking for "Millenium", it will not appear if you simply type "Mill" (unlike how search engines can work) - you need to type in the full word exactly as it's spelt. Same goes for if there are/aren't apostrophes (e.g. David's)
    • Sometimes the names on the list are completely different to what you know as the shop name. Best to use addresses to match them up.
    • Check the official map!!!!

Thanks to everyone who contributed and I hope people enjoyed my impromptu/improvised template to report on these places. Ozbargain has once again been a great resource for another great promotion!

  • I managed only 72 out of a possible 80 transactions but I was happy with that. My grand finale was the restaurant I went to on Saturday night where they let me pay my $100 bill with 5 cards! Let's remember that amex does this to support small business so if a small business treats you well in November, please give them your business all year round. A few places such as the health food store in South Melbourne market- Moses and Co were actually encouraging people to sign up for shop small before they paid! That is what we like to see!

  • +1

Thanks to the the contributors here. The reports written have helped me. Here is my opal topup effort on the very last day of the promo.

    B&J newsagency - 187 Thomas St
Singaporean/Malaysian mid age lady. Was non plussed about my top up. Mentioned she would do it only because shop was not busy. No paypass. Surcharge was $1.50. Tempted to walk out but just went ahead at the end as it was closest to my place. Will not bother next time.

    Wu's pharmacy
Very nice friendly Chinese little old lady. Top up two of my cards. Felt bad as I think she had arthritic hands. Hopefully it wasn't painful for her. But she was very happy to accept amex opal top ups. Paypass available. Surcharge was 50c. Great central location.

King of the Pack (888 Wholly Tobacconist) - Shop 26/61 Oxford St.
Very nice friendly little old viet lady. Happy to accept my business. Top up three cards. No issues at all. Even asked me if I had any more cards to use. Paypass available. Surcharge was only 20c. Cheapest amount that I was charged. Located inside the building, not obvious when walking on the street.

Oxford St Newsagency - 1/18-32 Oxford St
Nice mid age asian lady. Paypass available. Surcharge was 50c.

Connaught Newsagency - 187 Liverpool St
Mid age Chinese man. Friendly enough. Top up two of my cards. No paypass. Surcharge was 50c. Located under residential apartment.
