    • Thanks for update, will pay them a visit tomorrow

      • make sure say clearly, JUST ONE TIME $20 RECHARGE PLEASE. NOT TWO.

        • sure. I normally do 1 per visit but why the need to highlight? do the surcharge goes up for multiple recharges?

        • @lokesh7: because today the guy somehow "heard" me ask for two recharges. i didnt say twice..

  • For those living around Boronia in Melb, Arthur Daleys FTG and Colchester Nursery Kilsyth are both on the map but don't accept AMEX. I've put in $40 of claim using the form as I used my VISA linked to the same NAB platinum account, we'll see how I go.

Guys, if your card wasn't accepted or you were charged ANY surplus, please report the business on http://takeamex.com.au. It's a very short form and easy to fill out. Amex team will at least try to fix those issues or remove them from the next 'shop small' list. Amex advised me to do this when I complained about a store charging very high surplus.

    • I can understand a small surcharge for AMEX seeing as the margin for Opal recharges is negligible, but $2 (10%) is ridiculous

      • Exactly. $0.50 is still ok.

    • That explains why a number of stores suddenly disappeared from the shop small map.

  • Went to top up at City Convenience 19-21 Hunter St. They charged me 2 dollar surcharge and didn't get an email confirmation either…

  • +10

FYI thenile.com.au is listed in thydzik's database under "The Nile, Artarmon NSW" and I just tried it and it triggered the email. Brings the price of some books down to on par, or below, Book Depository or AbeBooks. Plus they have free, no questions asked returns.

Oh, and 2 points per dollar with Rewards Central, but no cashback with Pricepal or Cashrewards that I could find? (Only their eBay store).

    • This is really helpful, thanks.

    • Good finding, but I did not find it in his database?

      • it worked for me too.

      • It's under "The Nile" in Artarmon NSW, in case you were trying to search for thenile.com.au

    • Thank you

    • And cashback received.

    • They also sell toys and baby stuff… FYI

    • Thanks for posting this, worked for me too - just placed an order and it triggered the email :)

  • has anyone tried Stalactites in Melb CBD?

  • +1

Millennium Convenience Store(289-295 Sussex St) asking $1 surcharge today. Top up done but no email received

    • did you receive credit? can't find it on map

      • +3

        It's been confirmed 5 times, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 via wiki and is on the map

        • Thank you. Neil. I actually tried to search multiple times. The search function is definitely terrible.

    • I didn't receive email too, but credit showed up a few days later.

  • Hope someone knows the answer to this:
Each card is allowed to be used 10 times, once per participating small business.

So if they are different AMCAL stores, at different addresses, are they considered different participating small businesses? I suspect they are, but would like to get some confirmation from someone who knows for sure.

    Many thanks in advance.

    • +3

Yes the name will be different

      • Thanks for quick reply :-)

  • Chew Burger at Preston no longer accepts AMEX cards. Went there today and my AMEX card didn't work; they said they recently changed the payment system.

    • Is it still on the map?

      • Yes, still on the map

        • You can still pay by other means, log into amex and submit a refund reuest

  • +1

Just thought I'd mention that I've so far written to Amex twice about my card not being accepted, and both times, they have credited $10 back to my account.

    • Good on you. Could you share the Amex email address you used?

      • I just contacted them via my account on Amex. I'd rather be able to do it on my bank AmEx, but haven't worked out how to do that yet.

    • That's nice. Did you have to pay by other card and provide them the photo evidence?

      • +2

I did pay by another card, have not had to provide photo evidence, but I've been prepared to.

    • Do you know whether these manual $10 credits count towards the 10 quota?

      • I would guess yes. The description of the credit is the name of the outlet that did not accept the card.

      • I think it depends - mine simply says 'credit adjustment'. In September I had one of these and it did not count. I haven't done 10 shops yet on the card in question this time but suspect it won't count.

        • I think you're right. Unlike bluedufflecoat, I had a manual credit which says credit adjustment (unlike their one which shows the name of the outlet).

However, I actually asked AMEX directly and they said it would count.

We'll see, as I've actually done an 11th transaction anyway.

        • @illumination: any updates?

        • +1

@bluedufflecoat: My gamble of doing an 11th transaction paid off.

So I managed to get 11 lots of $10 credit, because one of the 11 was a "Credit Adjustment". Sweet.

  • I can report that at least two of the three butchers listed in the Queen Victoria Markets in Melbourne are not accepting Amex: Amott, and Vic Meat Supply

    • Try Primo meats, from memory they accepted Amex a few years ago and qualified for shop small. Decent butchers as well :)

      • The list of butchers in the markets who notionally participate in Shop Small is now down to only three! Two of those are listed above as not actually accepting Amex, and the third is Hagen's, which is an organic butcher which I didn't test.

  • +5

If in Melbourne, something different to do is Eureka Sky Tower. $20 for an adult but with Shop Small, it's just $10 admission. (No extra charge for Amex)

Nearby there's also Cafe Baci. Some of their focaccias in the display are at a good price after half off (and I mention because it's in the next building). Also delicious and the service is great.

  • Used my supplementary Amex branded card (different card number) for the first time last week. Went to same store, used both cards, only got credit back for one of the cards.

    • Is the supp card registered?
Provided it's registered, it can take up to 5 days to be credited

      • -1

Yes, it's registered and I can see the transaction. I received my credit for my primary card in the next business day. This is the 5th business day and I received zilch for my secondary.

        • Slow that active brain down!
Sometimes it can be dleayed especially if u pay pass (you might have not in this case)
If your supp card is registered then fire away

        • +1

@mmd: Actually you're right. I forgot to register for Small Shop! Thought it was automatic after registering the actual card since my primary card was linked. Thanks for reminding me.

I went to AMCAL Vermont South yesterday to re-charge my MyKi. They refused to topup MyKi on Amex. They're still happy to charge Amex for stuffs in their store.

Asked them why, this was the answer from a (seem-to-be) senior staff: "They're charging us too much", not sure if she wanted to refer to Amex or MyKi…

I have updated the WiKi page to remove AMCAL Vermont South MyKi Topup

    • thanks for the update, was going to head down there in the next couple of days to do the same.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Was going to head down on the weekend

My wife went to a newsagent at Box Hill and they said they don't accept Amex as well. Not sure if she went to the correct one as there's one in each centre so Box Hill might be off the list also

      • hate these doggy shops.

My experience with Opal Top ups…

    Good:

Darling Park Newsagency, 201 Sussex St Sydney - 40c surcharge per card
Darling Harbour View Convenience, Suite 24, 5A Erskine St Sydney - $1 surcharge per card on my first visit, $0.50 surcharge per card on the next visit (using different AMEX cards of course!)

    Bad:

City Convenience, 22 Market St Sydney - $2 surcharge per card
Darling Convenience Store, 20 King St Sydney - $2 surcharge per card

Because I couldn't stomach paying a 10% surcharge, I said I would top up elsewhere.

    • 50c for me @ Darling Park Newsagency, 201 Sussex St Sydney, still thumbs up!!

i just had big japanese lunch for $20 and get a receipt. will complain to amex because they are on the list but seems hate amex so much they almost scream NOOOO when i asked can i pay by amex

    Hello OzBargainers,

My Opal Topup adventures have been somewhat better than in the past.

These are the retailers in order of visitation.
    * Ezy Mart - 237 Oxford Street Bondi Junction NSW 2022 - .70c surcharge
    * News New Newsagency - SHOP 3067 WESTFIELD BONDI JUNCTION 500 OXFORD STREET , BONDI JUNCTION NEW SOUTH WALES 2022 - .50c surcharge
    * WORLD NEWSAGENCY - SHOP G11-13 METCENTRE (Wynyard Station) 273 GEORGE STREET , SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES 2000 - .50c Surcharge.
    * ST MARTIN'S CITY NEWSAGENCY 31 MARKET STREET ST MARTINS TOWER , SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES 2000 - .90c surcharge on $20 recharge. tiered

Note Some members may have difficulty trying at the following EzyMart
EZYMART 26 BRONTE ROAD , BONDI JUNCTION NEW SOUTH WALES 2022. Retailer was happy to process the transaction with a .70c surcharge, however my Amex card was declined due to the terminal rejecting my card, others might have better luck. Contacted Amex and they gave me a manual credit for the inconvenience and used another form of payment due to the inconvenience.

    Thanks.

    • WORLD NEWSAGENCY - SHOP G11-13 METCENTRE (Wynyard Station) is eligible?

      • Just went to the news agency in MET centre and they refused to accept amex

        • Tried today as well. They don't accept AMEX for opal.

        • @hongd: what other ones near met centre are good for opal recharge? i'm thinking to check out at lunch

        • @dealsniper:

Have anyone checked out BRIDGEPORT CONVENIENCE STORE on bridge street?

        • @dealsniper: I got off at Wynyard just for this recharge. I thought I shall try Darling Harbour View Convenience, Suite 24, 5A Erskine St Sydney, but didn't get the time. It was said 50c there. Good luck.

        • +1

@hongd: Verified, Darling Harbour View Convenience, Suite 24, 5A Erskine St Sydney, still 50c

        • @hongd:

O Bugger, didn't know this place, l got charged for a dollar at Kings wharf supermarket just two shops away literally!!

      • The day I visited they accepted for Opal, however the Goal Posts seem to move for these retailers. Once they latch on they get shaky. Really what is the issue? The money is not coming out of their bank accounts.

  • Went to EzyMart at 26 Bronte Rd Bondi Junction and they no longer accept amex for opal top ups

  • Anyone found Petrol Stations in Melbourne on the list? It seems they've become scarce in other states too.

  • +1

Any yum cha places in Sydney that people have found?

I really like Ashfield Wests (Golden Times Seafood Restaurant) and Canterbury Leagues club (The Dynastty Restaurant - member's favourite too), both are on the list, but they both claim to not take AMEX.

edit: Zilver is on the list, have called and confirmed that they accept AMEX with no surcharge. Popular Marigold isn't there though ;)

    • +1

Crystal Seafood Restaurant (right next to Strathfield Plaza) in Strathfield does yum cha, is on shop small, and takes AMEX a fairly high 2.5% surcharge.

They also have a minimum payment of $25 per card so keep that in mind.

    • Imperial Peking restaurant has yum cha. Possibly weekend only. No surcharge

      • Kingsford
        The Rocks
        Blakehurst

        Too far for me haha
        but thanks

As of 2 mins ago, 419 Pitt St was charging $2 surcharge per opal top up "as instructed by boss".. So I walked out. And will report. Haha.

23 Rawson Place Ezymart, charging $1.50 surcharge. Walked out

  • Does anyone know for ezymart if each location an individual retailer. i.e. if i buy something there and go to another ezymart its separate and will get the cashback?

    • +1

      Yes.

    Here's my summary of tonight:

    Wu's Pharmacy was good.
    Merchant name: WU PHARMACY
    Surcharge: $0.50
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 419 Pitt St I walked out due to surcharge. Guy was friendly.
    Surcharge: $2

Ezymart 23 Rawson Place I walked out. Guy was also friendly here.
    Surcharge: $1.50

Ezymart 770 George Street I walked out. Guy was also friendly.
    Surcharge: $1.50.

City Convenience 379-383 Pitt St - Guy didn't like his job but was willing to do it and was quite "understanding" of the promo
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: CITY MART 24SEVEN PTY LTD
    Paypass: Yes

City Convenience 614 George Street (next to The Dough Collective) didn't take PayPass, but the guy was extremely efficient with the machine. Neutral friendliness.
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: 614 CCS GEORGE PTY LTD
    Paypass: No

Saw Millenium Convenience Store on the Ozbargain maintained list but didn't have the balls to try because I couldn't find them on the official list (despite the numerous reports). Just tried to search again on the official list on desktop and it appeared. Didn't appear on mobile for some reason.

Discovered Mirna Convenience Store 69 Liverpool Street on the way to Convenience Store on Sussex Street (mentioned below). Mirna are on the official Shop Small list - not listed on the Ozbargain Google Maps however. They do do opal top ups, but the cashier working tonight claimed the machine was down tonight.

Detoured to Convenience Store 368 Sussex St on the corner of Liverpool Street and Sussex St because they used to be part of Shop Small in previous years. No more Shop Small logo to be seen, and not on the official list, nor the Ozbargain maintained list, so didn't bother.
edit: Damn it seems like they are on the official list under the name "GROCERY ZONE Shop 1 368 Sussex Street"

525 George Street should be removed from the Ozbargain maintained Google Maps too, as it is no longer on the official list (and I did not bother trying due to the recent reports that they are no longer participating)

Grocery Zone 44 Park Street - Guy says cash only for Opal card, unless you buy something. I tried to bargain. He "did me a favour" and let me do 4x cards at $1 surcharge. At first I tried to be a smartass by saying I'll buy a $2 sim for each top up I do on each card (which I can use for "porting" between the same carrier), because he didn't mention a surcharge, so I saw it as me effectively paying a $2 surcharge and getting a free $2 SIM. Guy was friendly.
    Surcharge: $1
    Merchant name: GROCERY ZONE PARK
    Paypass: No

Fastway 4/27 Park Street - I cannot find this on the official map whether on mobile or desktop and they did not have a Shop Small sticker either, but I can confirm I got emails for top ups there tonight. The guy working there tonight is extremely friendly, smiley and would bring a smile to anyone's face!!
    Surcharge: $1
Merchant name: DARLING HARBOUR MIMI MART PTY
    Paypass: Yes

As a bonus, David's Kitchen next to shark Hotel on Liverpool Road are a Shop Small merchant. Cheap Asian takeaway place which does rice with 3 choices of dishes for $9.

Summary of things to be added/changed on the official Ozbargain maintained Google Maps list of Opal top up places:

    • Grocery Zone Park 44 Park Street probably to be removed (or disclaimer to say card payment only accepted if buying something as well). Maybe it depends who you get.
    • City Convenience 525 George Street to be removed due to numerous reports of not getting emails, cashback and not being on the official list either.
    • Mirna Convenience Store 69 Liverpool Street to potentially be added, I guess pending more reports from others stating whether it actually works or not (was told machine was broken tonight)
    • 368 Sussex Street to be added under the name of Grocery Zone? Shop name: "Convenience Store"
    • Maybe an addition to the wiki/description of the Google maps list that describes the opening hours of the store, where applicable/known? As an example, I believe Connaught Newsagency is closed on Sundays and Darling Park Newsagency is not open weekends. On the other hand, City Convenience 379-383 Pitt St is open 24/7.
    • Very informative post.

    • Thanks for that.. Bonus points for commenting on the friendliness of the guy.

      • I find that it matters. It does make a difference to the experience.. especially when you're being annoying and coming in with a million cards.

  • anyone notice some of the stores on the spreadsheet doesn't come up on the official map? i went to a couple of the bonbons bakery and their machine doesnt event accept amex.

    • That can happen even for places on the official map so that's not a problem of the spreadsheet.

However, report them to takeamex.com.au for agreeing to participate but not actually participating.

      • Yeah not saying it's the spreadsheet's fault.

Also just discovered one of the stores. Tang Asian Grocery, changed names on my 2nd card on the transaction and so now I haven't gotten the $10 back and it no longer appears on the map… wtf?! Has this ever happened to anyone else? and does Amex usually credit you $10 manually?

        • they used to call GREAT EASTERN GROCERY but changed its name to Tang Asian Grocery.
had the same problem with the previous Shop Small Weekend during 16-18 September 2016.
called Amex and they manually credit $10 but now is not on the map so not sure if they will

        • @akanie: When I was looking through the spreadsheet two weeks ago Tang was listed.

        • @bloomer: i know. i checked the map at the beginning of each shop small before i go to the shops.
after i saw Frozensage comment yesterday i checked the map again and is not listed on the map anymore but my friend told me they still got the email from shopping at Tang last weekend.

    • anyone notice some of the stores on the spreadsheet doesn't come up on the official map?

It's possible the map has been updated since the data was extracted for the spreadsheet based upon reports of certain shops not taking part perhaps?

      • +2

Looks like they actually do update the map.
I reported Westfield Doncaster Bonbons start of last week - I doubled checked it was still on the map
They said they'll send to the team to get it removed and also credited me the $10
        Not on the map now

Newly confirmed Myki top up in Melbourne (previously unconfirmed since September)

    Confirmation immediately received.

  • Went to Foodworks in Fitzroy for myki topup, but not accepted
