      • Yeah I thought I could edit my comment, I don't seem to be able to
Only got to Wus & the Connaught as it started to rain
going to try King & Oxford street tomorrow.

  • Went to Ba Get Vietnamese place in Melbourne city. They do not accept Amex. Being on the list, totally pissed me off. Good luck Ba Get. You will never never get my business.

    • If it's on the list, keep the receipt and log into ur amex to request a statement credit.

      • Thanks, mate. They did not even let me pay for it. Amex card was not accepted. :) These terrible shops got themselves listed to attract the business, but not accepting the card. Can Amex do something about it?

        • Yes, if it's on the list then amex will honour it.

Pay the shop with another method (credit card/eftpos/cash).
Make sure you keep the receipt.

Log into your amex account and go to the contact centre and there should be a statement credit request

Upload the receipt, and details and it will take a few days to be credited.

        • @mmd: Really?I did not know this. :)

        • +2

@jingsu6688: Amex have exceptional customer service, and flexibility. Also with Amex travel insurance, if the Airline co. does not accept Amex, then Amex will cover free Travel Insurance too.

        • @Peck: Whoa really? I didn't know that. That's good to know. Thanks!

  • Amex seems to broken. 3 declined transactions for me in a row and the people in front of me. Shame am only in city today.

  • 22 Market St now asking $2 for opal.

  • Any shopsmall store sells gift cards? Went to Nextra Chatswood NSW, but they refused to accept Amex for gift card purchase. I was willing to pay surcharge, still they would not sell.

    • +1

Constant Reader in Crows Nest - sells its own gift cards - they are a book shop.

Just did Opal top-up at the following shops and really impressed with their polite service. So, if you have Amex and want to be treated like a customer then I suggest you visit these shops:

    1. Wus pharmacy, 629 George street - 50c Surcharge
    2. Connaught newsagency, 187 liverpool street - 50c Surcharge
    3. King of the pack, 61 oxford street - 20c Surcharge - very nice owner and I thanked her for the polite service. I asked if Small Shop helps you and she said yes.
    4. Oxford street newsagency - 50c Surcharge

Avoid World Square NewsAgent - they refused to take Amex.

  • anyone had there cards replaced during the promo?

the new card i received has same pin altough the card number has changed but when I try register it says you have already registered ect.

    • Don't worry, give Amex system 2 to 3 days, all the offers you have registered with the old card, it will get transfer to your new replacement card. It happened to me, I think mine took about 4 days to transfer the registered promotion to my new card.

      • oh ok kewl and how do you know when this has happened ?

        • Log into you Amex online account, check "Offer and Places", all your registered promotion offer should be there once transfer over to your new replacement card. Before the transfer, it is blank.

  • Update -20 king st asking for $2 surcharge and 289 Sussex st asking for $1.50 surcharge now. I walked away from 20 King st and to sussex st i mentioned it was $1 on monday so the guy charged me $1.

    • is 289 Sussex an Asian grocery store?
I was thinking about going after work, hopefully my negotiation skills are as good as yours :\

lol ok thanks, I was google mapping the wrong thing then

Arabic employees with quite arrogant attitude.

        • +2

          @Tipu:

I agree, it seems like most of the convenience stores in Sydney CBD are run by "what do you want" attitude arabs.

        • +1

@victorheaven: Most of staff were showing attitude even though they were charging $2 per transaction. They were like "I am doing you favour by doing this transaction". lol

        • +2

@Tipu: how are they doing a favour for us doing amex transaction!. I can't stand these owners!!!

anything over $2 surcharge surely a profit to their business. Please OP Just walk out if asking for $1 or more.

        • @leehungfei: it is very dodgy I wonder if they charge 10% fee not during theae promos

        • +1

@leehungfei: I'm currently going thru the process of getting Amex setup, and if I am not being misled Amex charges 1.95% on the promise that I do not charge a surcharge.

Now I have heard it can be as low as ~1.6%, so I haven't even started to negotiate with them yet.

        • @t25: I spoke to one shop small outlet and they said that they get a really good deal from AMEX. I did not ask what %

  • EZY MART RAWSON PLACE $1.5 today
T & S Son 419 Pitt St, Haymarket need to bargain for $1, he said $8 first then $7 then $1 each

    • +1

$8…what a cheeky guy. He is actually very close to my office but haven't been there yet as he always want more curcharge. Might go there to troll him a little tomorrow

  • Opal top ups
    1. Berry Street Minimart, North Sydney - does not accept AmEx.
    2. King of the Pack, Padstow - 2% surcharge.

  • Got credit from all stores except 525 George st.. Didn't get email for it either

    • after someone else (Sharpy?) the same, I checked and got all but one, 525 George St is missing

Maybe take them off the list

      • They are listed in the Amex map though.
Raised a ticket with them and they said to wait.. Hopeless

        • I didn't get any credit either from 525 George St
Where exactly do you see 525 George St in the Amex map?
I actually can't see the convenience stores listed here in the map…

        • @hendyb:
Its listed in thydzik's map.. I assume he extracted it from the Amex map.

Edit: looks like 1/525 George st is not listed in the Amex official map.

    • Not worked for me either. It's registered as "J & Z PTY LTD DARLINGHURST" in the statement.
Last year, I think it was registered as "CCS 525…".

The same goes for 22 Market St - Not working.

      • It comes up as CITY MART 525 PTY LTD.

        22 Market worked for me.

        • Correction: 22 Market St just showed up, so it worked for me too.

  • An Oportos store that I drive by is on the list but in order to spend $20 with best value I have to get a family pack (for me). Cheat meal weekend done!!

  • Max one opal Top up at ezymart Elizabeth St. Sounds like a ridiculous rule. Anyone else get this before?

    • what is the st address for ezymart Elizabeth St? what was the surcharge? did you get an Amex confirmation email?

      • +1

Sorry, not Elizabeth st, it was 52 Martin Place. $1 surcharge and yes there is a confirmation email.

Pity we don't have separate threads for the opal/myki top ups and general discussion like we used to have. I wanted to give some credit to the lovely people from Fruit Nest in Malvern, Victoria. When I went there today (again), he asked me if I knew about shop small as he said he wanted to be sure I get my $10. (I didn't tell him about my 8 cards) I said, "Oh, yes! I am registered!" He told me that if any customers weren't registered, he got them to do it on their phone in the store before they paid for their fruit and veggies. I was impressed. Please shop there if you can. These are the sorts of business people we need to support.

    • We need such businesses in Sydney. Sydney shopkeepers (most of them) make their face when we say that we would pay by Amex - leave aside encouraging customers for Amex usage to take advantage of the offer.

  • For anyone who is unhappy with the excessive surcharges charged by small businesses - American Express will refund the surcharges incurred if you call them.
Shop Small businesses are required to warmly accept American Express as part of this promotion.

    • +1

      warmly

That's a pretty hard ask for some of these retailers lol

  • +7

52 Martin Place now requesting $2 surcharge - i walked out as there are plenty others that have less surcharge. Also, feel that we shouldn't let these stores think that they can get away with increasing surcharge as they like.

    • If stores with as low as $0.60 surcharge on $20 Opal recharge are still making money (whatever amount, at least not in loss), I see no reason why some stores should charge $2, which is apparently 10% surcharge for a $20 recharge. It's ridiculously high for any credit card! Amex should control them by setting upper caps for the surcharge amount if at all they HAD to charge it, else they would make loss.

      • dodgy fees would not support wonder if they charge $2 out of the promo period I highly doubt

      • We don't know that the $0.60 surchargers aren't making a loss.

What we do know is some are vehemently saying no all together.

Why would they do that… for a small business a profit is a profit

    • Dude $2 is fine compared to my experience.

Went to summit convenience southbank for myki top up.

      SURCHARGE IS $4 lol

She said she is sick with people paying with multiple amex.

      It isnt worth her time.

      I smiled and walked away

      • So busy store! Not worth the time.. lol

    • Monday 14th $1 surcharge, at EzyMart Martin place

      • thanks for sharing this! Hopefully more ozbargainers walking out on those stores with $2 surcharges will make them realise that no way they will get away with a $2 surcharge.

  • Successfully recharged Opal card at CONVENIENCE AT THE COVE at Lane Cove. $0.60 surcharge per recharge of $20.

  • I noticed the Myki list now shows Foodworks (GERTRUDE ST MINI MART) as having a $1 surcharge, but can't find anyone having commented that the shop had added a surcharge… is this a mistake?

    • elyobo made a change to the wiki as it seems they tried on 6/11 and were asked for a $1 surcharge.

      • That's odd. On the 7th I recharged two cards there with $20 each and there was no surcharge.

        • I went again today and used my remaining AMEX card. No surcharge.

        • @bloomer:

OK, have updated the wiki. Maybe elyobo can explain.

    • I went there and they said no surcharge for one card, then $1 per card after that.

  • Is "up to $100" for each card?

I have a NAB issued AMEX card, and my wife has an additional card, so we should be able to get up to $200 credit in total, is that correct?

    • +1

Yes, as long as both cards have 'small shop' offer saved on them. Another important condition - usage only once (for each card) in one store on list.

  • NSW:
Successfully topped up Opal at Wu's Pharmacy ($0.50) and EzyMart Rawson St ($1.50) today.
Attempted an Opal top up at City Convenience (Bent St, Moore Park). They said AMEX "wasn't working" so I didn't go through with it.

    • EzyMart(Rawson Place)'s surcharges are ridiculous. $1.5 per $20 transaction. They better be not accepting the Amex.

  • Thanks. Dont get me wrong, i really appreciate the lists- i just thought this was amusing:
The Lost Dogs' Home 2 Gracie Street North Melbourne 3051 Varied Menu Restaurant Dining

  • I visited the summit convenience southbank for myki top up.

    $4 surcharge.

She said she is sick with people paying with multiple amex.

    It isnt worth her time.

    I smiled and walked away

  • Hey Melbourne folks who focused on MyKi recharging. I have written a Grease Monkey Script to highlight all MyKi recharge outlets directly on Amex Shop Small map. You can grab it here: Wiki - MyKi Top Up

The list of locations was grabbed from here: https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/myki-retail-outlets/

  • Is there any way to get the thydzik.com list updated. I found a shop on the AMEX map (Costis fish at Castle Hill) that I'm pretty sure wasn't on the original Amex map

  • I attempted a Myki top up at Amcal Chemist, Lygon Court, Carlton but again management have told staff to not allow top ups with American Express due to the Shop Small event (they had written instructions for cashiers).

    • You should ask if they allow Amex myki top up after Shop Small is over.

    • +3

this store should be promptly remove from shopsmall. its show how lack of respect of the whole amex shopsmall campaign.

  • Just got charged $2 for $20 Opal top up at Society Phillip St Sydney. Looks like most of the convenience stores in the CBD have jacked up their prices to $2 :(

    • +1

I was there 15 mins ago and walked out when the guy asked for $2 surcharge.

    • +4

Then you should have walked out. We still have 2 weeks to shop small. They should understand if they insist on $2 surcharge they will lose business.

      • +2

Can't agree more with Sharp here, if we all started walking out then these extra greedy surcharges will quickly stop.

      • I had already asked for the top up so the guy already grabbed my card when he said it's $2, I should've asked first before committing :(

    • +3

That sucks. The world square new agency really pissed me off though. Min $50 is stupid. That means the discount will only be about 20% rather than 50%. I buy from them every month but I'm going boycott them now.

  • I can't find Nextra Chatswood (Westfield) on the map anymore. Only the Chase store which I've seen in the comments that they no longer accept Amex. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Is it normal to not get the confirmation e-mail? I have double checked that my card is registered on Amex Connect. Shoped at couple of places but no confirmation e-mail like in the previous e-mail.

BTW, topped up $20 Opal at Double Bay Newagency for only 40c surcharge.

    • Yes. Emails are not reliable.

      • For instance, I never get emails for my ANZ card, but the credits come through (eventually!).

  • 70c Surcharge and email straight away from EzyMart Randwick (please note there are two ezymart on Belmore road, this on was 166 Belmore road)

  • How come all these Petrol Stations no long available?

  • City Convenience 1/525 George Street didn't get registered for some reason?
I didn't get the email and the cashback one week later.
    Is it just me?

    • Not worked for me either.

  • +1

52 Martin place asking for $2 surcharge now as well, walked out without topping up.

    • +2

      Just did the same thing

    • greedy bastardoooooo

    • +2

If your card wasn't accepted or you were charged ANY surplus, please report the business on http://takeamex.com.au. It's a very short form and easy to fill out. Amex team will at least try to fix those issues or remove them from the next 'shop small' list. Amex advised me to do this when I complained about a store charging very high surplus.
